  • improving conversions to binary and back in C#

    - by Saad Imran.
    I'm trying to write a general purpose socket server for a game I'm working on. I know I could very well use already built servers like SmartFox and Photon, but I wan't to go through the pain of creating one myself for learning purposes. I've come up with a BSON inspired protocol to convert the the basic data types, their arrays, and a special GSObject to binary and arrange them in a way so that it can be put back together into object form on the client end. At the core, the conversion methods utilize the .Net BitConverter class to convert the basic data types to binary. Anyways, the problem is performance, if I loop 50,000 times and convert my GSObject to binary each time it takes about 5500ms (the resulting byte[] is just 192 bytes per conversion). I think think this would be way too slow for an MMO that sends 5-10 position updates per second with a 1000 concurrent users. Yes, I know it's unlikely that a game will have a 1000 users on at the same time, but like I said earlier this is supposed to be a learning process for me, I want to go out of my way and build something that scales well and can handle at least a few thousand users. So yea, if anyone's aware of other conversion techniques or sees where I'm loosing performance I would appreciate the help. GSBitConverter.cs This is the main conversion class, it adds extension methods to main datatypes to convert to the binary format. It uses the BitConverter class to convert the base types. I've shown only the code to convert integer and integer arrays, but the rest of the method are pretty much replicas of those two, they just overload the type. public static class GSBitConverter { public static byte[] ToGSBinary(this short value) { return BitConverter.GetBytes(value); } public static byte[] ToGSBinary(this IEnumerable<short> value) { List<byte> bytes = new List<byte>(); short length = (short)value.Count(); bytes.AddRange(length.ToGSBinary()); for (int i = 0; i < length; i++) bytes.AddRange(value.ElementAt(i).ToGSBinary()); return bytes.ToArray(); } public static byte[] ToGSBinary(this bool value); public static byte[] ToGSBinary(this IEnumerable<bool> value); public static byte[] ToGSBinary(this IEnumerable<byte> value); public static byte[] ToGSBinary(this int value); public static byte[] ToGSBinary(this IEnumerable<int> value); public static byte[] ToGSBinary(this long value); public static byte[] ToGSBinary(this IEnumerable<long> value); public static byte[] ToGSBinary(this float value); public static byte[] ToGSBinary(this IEnumerable<float> value); public static byte[] ToGSBinary(this double value); public static byte[] ToGSBinary(this IEnumerable<double> value); public static byte[] ToGSBinary(this string value); public static byte[] ToGSBinary(this IEnumerable<string> value); public static string GetHexDump(this IEnumerable<byte> value); } Program.cs Here's the the object that I'm converting to binary in a loop. class Program { static void Main(string[] args) { GSObject obj = new GSObject(); obj.AttachShort("smallInt", 15); obj.AttachInt("medInt", 120700); obj.AttachLong("bigInt", 10900800700); obj.AttachDouble("doubleVal", Math.PI); obj.AttachStringArray("muppetNames", new string[] { "Kermit", "Fozzy", "Piggy", "Animal", "Gonzo" }); GSObject apple = new GSObject(); apple.AttachString("name", "Apple"); apple.AttachString("color", "red"); apple.AttachBool("inStock", true); apple.AttachFloat("price", (float)1.5); GSObject lemon = new GSObject(); apple.AttachString("name", "Lemon"); apple.AttachString("color", "yellow"); apple.AttachBool("inStock", false); apple.AttachFloat("price", (float)0.8); GSObject apricoat = new GSObject(); apple.AttachString("name", "Apricoat"); apple.AttachString("color", "orange"); apple.AttachBool("inStock", true); apple.AttachFloat("price", (float)1.9); GSObject kiwi = new GSObject(); apple.AttachString("name", "Kiwi"); apple.AttachString("color", "green"); apple.AttachBool("inStock", true); apple.AttachFloat("price", (float)2.3); GSArray fruits = new GSArray(); fruits.AddGSObject(apple); fruits.AddGSObject(lemon); fruits.AddGSObject(apricoat); fruits.AddGSObject(kiwi); obj.AttachGSArray("fruits", fruits); Stopwatch w1 = Stopwatch.StartNew(); for (int i = 0; i < 50000; i++) { byte[] b = obj.ToGSBinary(); } w1.Stop(); Console.WriteLine(BitConverter.IsLittleEndian ? "Little Endian" : "Big Endian"); Console.WriteLine(w1.ElapsedMilliseconds + "ms"); } Here's the code for some of my other classes that are used in the code above. Most of it is repetitive. The first thing I tried is to define an interface for a function which gets memoized automatically upon execution: class EMAFunction:IFunction { Dictionary<List<object>, List<object>> map; class EMAComparer : IEqualityComparer<List<object>> { private int _multiplier = 97; public bool Equals(List<object> a, List<object> b) { List<object> aVals = (List<object>)a[0]; int aPeriod = (int)a[1]; List<object> bVals = (List<object>)b[0]; int bPeriod = (int)b[1]; return (aVals.Count == bVals.Count) && (aPeriod == bPeriod); } public int GetHashCode(List<object> obj) { // Don't compute hash code on null object. if (obj == null) { return 0; } // Get length. int length = obj.Count; List<object> vals = (List<object>) obj[0]; int period = (int) obj[1]; return (_multiplier * vals.GetHashCode() * period.GetHashCode()) + length;; } } public EMAFunction() { NumParams = 2; Name = "EMA"; map = new Dictionary<List<object>, List<object>>(new EMAComparer()); } #region IFunction Members public int NumParams { get; set; } public string Name { get; set; } public object Execute(List<object> parameters) { if (parameters.Count != NumParams) throw new ArgumentException("The num params doesn't match!"); if (!map.ContainsKey(parameters)) { //map.Add(parameters, List<double> values = new List<double>(); List<object> asObj = (List<object>)parameters[0]; foreach (object val in asObj) { values.Add((double)val); } int period = (int)parameters[1]; asObj.Clear(); List<double> ema = TechFunctions.ExponentialMovingAverage(values, period); foreach (double val in ema) { asObj.Add(val); } map.Add(parameters, asObj); } return map[parameters]; } public void ClearMap() { map.Clear(); } #endregion } Here are my tests of the function: private void MemoizeTest() { DataSet dataSet = DataLoader.LoadData(DataLoader.DataSource.FROM_WEB, 1024); List<String> labels = dataSet.DataLabels; Stopwatch sw = new Stopwatch(); IFunction emaFunc = new EMAFunction(); List<object> parameters = new List<object>(); int numRuns = 1000; long sumTicks = 0; parameters.Add(dataSet.GetValues("open")); parameters.Add(12); // First call for(int i = 0; i < numRuns; ++i) { emaFunc.ClearMap();// remove any memoization mappings sw.Start(); emaFunc.Execute(parameters); sw.Stop(); sumTicks += sw.ElapsedTicks; } Console.WriteLine("Average ticks not-memoized " + (sumTicks/numRuns)); sumTicks = 0; // Repeat call for (int i = 0; i < numRuns; ++i) { sw.Start(); emaFunc.Execute(parameters); sw.Stop(); sumTicks += sw.ElapsedTicks; } Console.WriteLine("Average ticks memoized " + (sumTicks/numRuns)); } The performance is confusing me... I expected the memoized function to be faster, but it didn't work out that way: Average ticks not-memoized 106,182 Average ticks memoized 198,854 I tried doubling the data instances to 2048, but the results were about the same: Average ticks not-memoized 232,579 Average ticks memoized 446,280 I did notice that it was correctly finding the parameters in the map and it going directly to the map, but the performance was still slow... I'm either open for troubleshooting help with this example, or if you have a better solution to the problem then please let me know what it is.

  • PerformanceCounterCategory.Exists is very slow if category doesn't exists

    - by Shrike
    I have kind of library which uses a bunch of its own perf counters. But I want my library works fine even if that perf counters weren't installed. So I've created wrappers aroung PerformanceCounter and on the first use check if PerfCounter exists or not. If they exists then I'm using native PerformanceCounter instead I'm using a wrapper which do nothing. So to check perf counter existence I use PerformanceCounterCategory.Exists The problem is that if there isn't such category then PerformanceCounterCategory.Exists call takes (on my machine) about 10 seconds! Needless to say it's too slow. What can I do? Code to try it by youself: using System; using System.Diagnostics; class Program { static void Main(string[] args) { var ts = Stopwatch.StartNew(); var res = PerformanceCounterCategory.Exists("XYZ"); Console.WriteLine(ts.ElapsedMilliseconds); Console.WriteLine("result:" + res); } }

  • Why is insertion into my tree faster on sorted input than random input?

    - by Juliet
    Now I've always heard binary search trees are faster to build from randomly selected data than ordered data, simply because ordered data requires explicit rebalancing to keep the tree height at a minimum. Recently I implemented an immutable treap, a special kind of binary search tree which uses randomization to keep itself relatively balanced. In contrast to what I expected, I found I can consistently build a treap about 2x faster and generally better balanced from ordered data than unordered data -- and I have no idea why. Here's my treap implementation: http://pastebin.com/VAfSJRwZ And here's a test program: using System; using System.Collections.Generic; using System.Linq; using System.Diagnostics; namespace ConsoleApplication1 { class Program { static Random rnd = new Random(); const int ITERATION_COUNT = 20; static void Main(string[] args) { List<double> rndTimes = new List<double>(); List<double> orderedTimes = new List<double>(); rndTimes.Add(TimeIt(50, RandomInsert)); rndTimes.Add(TimeIt(100, RandomInsert)); rndTimes.Add(TimeIt(200, RandomInsert)); rndTimes.Add(TimeIt(400, RandomInsert)); rndTimes.Add(TimeIt(800, RandomInsert)); rndTimes.Add(TimeIt(1000, RandomInsert)); rndTimes.Add(TimeIt(2000, RandomInsert)); rndTimes.Add(TimeIt(4000, RandomInsert)); rndTimes.Add(TimeIt(8000, RandomInsert)); rndTimes.Add(TimeIt(16000, RandomInsert)); rndTimes.Add(TimeIt(32000, RandomInsert)); rndTimes.Add(TimeIt(64000, RandomInsert)); rndTimes.Add(TimeIt(128000, RandomInsert)); string rndTimesAsString = string.Join("\n", rndTimes.Select(x => x.ToString()).ToArray()); orderedTimes.Add(TimeIt(50, OrderedInsert)); orderedTimes.Add(TimeIt(100, OrderedInsert)); orderedTimes.Add(TimeIt(200, OrderedInsert)); orderedTimes.Add(TimeIt(400, OrderedInsert)); orderedTimes.Add(TimeIt(800, OrderedInsert)); orderedTimes.Add(TimeIt(1000, OrderedInsert)); orderedTimes.Add(TimeIt(2000, OrderedInsert)); orderedTimes.Add(TimeIt(4000, OrderedInsert)); orderedTimes.Add(TimeIt(8000, OrderedInsert)); orderedTimes.Add(TimeIt(16000, OrderedInsert)); orderedTimes.Add(TimeIt(32000, OrderedInsert)); orderedTimes.Add(TimeIt(64000, OrderedInsert)); orderedTimes.Add(TimeIt(128000, OrderedInsert)); string orderedTimesAsString = string.Join("\n", orderedTimes.Select(x => x.ToString()).ToArray()); Console.WriteLine("Done"); } static double TimeIt(int insertCount, Action<int> f) { Console.WriteLine("TimeIt({0}, {1})", insertCount, f.Method.Name); List<double> times = new List<double>(); for (int i = 0; i < ITERATION_COUNT; i++) { Stopwatch sw = Stopwatch.StartNew(); f(insertCount); sw.Stop(); times.Add(sw.Elapsed.TotalMilliseconds); } return times.Average(); } static void RandomInsert(int insertCount) { Treap<double> tree = new Treap<double>((x, y) => x.CompareTo(y)); for (int i = 0; i < insertCount; i++) { tree = tree.Insert(rnd.NextDouble()); } } static void OrderedInsert(int insertCount) { Treap<double> tree = new Treap<double>((x, y) => x.CompareTo(y)); for(int i = 0; i < insertCount; i++) { tree = tree.Insert(i + rnd.NextDouble()); } } } } And here's a chart comparing random and ordered insertion times in milliseconds: Insertions Random Ordered RandomTime / OrderedTime 50 1.031665 0.261585 3.94 100 0.544345 1.377155 0.4 200 1.268320 0.734570 1.73 400 2.765555 1.639150 1.69 800 6.089700 3.558350 1.71 1000 7.855150 4.704190 1.67 2000 17.852000 12.554065 1.42 4000 40.157340 22.474445 1.79 8000 88.375430 48.364265 1.83 16000 197.524000 109.082200 1.81 32000 459.277050 238.154405 1.93 64000 1055.508875 512.020310 2.06 128000 2481.694230 1107.980425 2.24 I don't see anything in the code which makes ordered input asymptotically faster than unordered input, so I'm at a loss to explain the difference. Why is it so much faster to build a treap from ordered input than random input?

  • Why is .NET faster than C++ in this case?

    - by acidzombie24
    -edit- I LOVE SLaks comment. "The amount of misinformation in these answers is staggering." :D Calm down guys. Pretty much all of you were wrong. I DID make optimizations. It turns out whatever optimizations I made wasn't good enough. I ran the code in GCC using gettimeofday (I'll paste code below) and used g++ -O2 file.cpp and got slightly faster results then C#. Maybe MS didn't create the optimizations needed in this specific case but after downloading and installing mingw I was tested and found the speed to be near identical. Justicle Seems to be right. I could have sworn I use clock on my PC and used that to count and found it was slower but problem solved. C++ speed isn't almost twice as slower in the MS compiler. When my friend informed me of this I couldn't believe it. So I took his code and put some timers onto it. Instead of Boo I used C#. I constantly got faster results in C#. Why? The .NET version was nearly half the time no matter what number I used. C++ version: #include <iostream> #include <stdio.h> #include <intrin.h> #include <windows.h> using namespace std; int fib(int n) { if (n < 2) return n; return fib(n - 1) + fib(n - 2); } int main() { __int64 time = 0xFFFFFFFF; while (1) { int n; //cin >> n; n = 41; if (n < 0) break; __int64 start = __rdtsc(); int res = fib(n); __int64 end = __rdtsc(); cout << res << endl; cout << (float)(end-start)/1000000<<endl; break; } return 0; } C# version: using System; using System.Collections.Generic; using System.Linq; using System.Text; using System.Runtime.InteropServices; using System.ComponentModel; using System.Threading; using System.IO; using System.Diagnostics; namespace fibCSTest { class Program { static int fib(int n) { if (n < 2)return n; return fib(n - 1) + fib(n - 2); } static void Main(string[] args) { //var sw = new Stopwatch(); //var timer = new PAB.HiPerfTimer(); var timer = new Stopwatch(); while (true) { int n; //cin >> n; n = 41; if (n < 0) break; timer.Start(); int res = fib(n); timer.Stop(); Console.WriteLine(res); Console.WriteLine(timer.ElapsedMilliseconds); break; } } } } GCC version: #include <iostream> #include <stdio.h> #include <sys/time.h> using namespace std; int fib(int n) { if (n < 2) return n; return fib(n - 1) + fib(n - 2); } int main() { timeval start, end; while (1) { int n; //cin >> n; n = 41; if (n < 0) break; gettimeofday(&start, 0); int res = fib(n); gettimeofday(&end, 0); int sec = end.tv_sec - start.tv_sec; int usec = end.tv_usec - start.tv_usec; cout << res << endl; cout << sec << " " << usec <<endl; break; } return 0; }

  • Visual Studio add-in for performance benchmarking

    - by chiccodoro
    I'd like to measure the performance of some code blocks in my c# winforms application. In particular I want to measure performance regression/improvement after some restructuring of the code. So long I've seen the System.Diagnostics.Stopwatch. However, I want to avoid writing measuring code into my classes, I would rather prefer to separate measuring from actual code. As for debugging, you can set breakpoints on several code lines and "jump" from one to the next by "Continue Execution", I imagine something similar for measuring: Mark to lines of code and make Visual Studio display the time elapsing from one to the next. Is there any feature/add-in in that direction?

  • Performance of DirectX and Recent Windows Mobile Version

    - by Kevin
    I'm seeing very poor performance while using the managed DirectDraw wrappers for WindowsMobile. Microsoft.WindowsMobile.DirectX.Direct3D I would appear the biggest bottle neck is calling Device.Present() after building up the scene. When using the System.Diagnostics.Stopwatch and running this very trivial exmaple Using Sprites on MSDN I'm seeing it's taking approximately 150ms to call the Device.Present() method. I'm seeing this on my AT&T Tilt and on the emulator. In larger applications such as the UltimateGMan sample it's taking over a second to call this method. Does anyone have any experience with using DirectX on mobile devices? What am I missing? I would prefer to stay in the managed world but if I drop back into C++ would I see better performance?

  • How can I optimize MVC and IIS pipeline to obtain higher speed?

    - by Andy
    Hi, I am doing performance tweaking of a simple app that uses MVC on IIS 7.5. I have a StopWatch starting up in Application_BeginRequest and I take a snapshot at Controller.OnActionExecuting. So I measure the time spend in the entire IIS pipeline: from request receipt to the moment execution finally gets to my controller. I obtain 700 microseconds on my 3GHz quad-core (project compiled Release x64), and I wonder where the bottleneck is, especially hearing some people say that one can get up to 8000 page loads per second with MVC. How can I optimize MVC and IIS pipeline to obtain higher speed?

  • How can i test my DB speed? (Learning)

    - by acidzombie24
    I have design a database. Theres no columns with indexing, nor any code for optimizing. I am positive i should index certain columns since i search them a lot. My question is HOW do i test if any part of my database will be slow? ATM I am using sqlite and i will be switching to either MS Sql or MySql based on my host provider. Will creating 100,000 records in each table be enough? Or will that always be fast in sqlite and i need to do 1mil? Do i need 10mil before a database will become slow? Also how do i time it? I am using C# so should i use StopWatch or is there a ADO.NET/Sqlite function i should use?

  • How to show a page after a specific time period?

    - by Mahfuz
    I want to build an online quiz test site. Suppose, exam will start at 10:00 am and a student login to give exam at 9:45 am. Whenever the student clicks 'Take Exam' button, he/she cannot not get access to the question paper because the exam time is 10:00 am and there are still 15 minutes before the exam start. Now I want to put some Javascript or PHP code that will prohibit the students to give exam earlier and if a students come early, it will show a stopwatch which display the remaining time before exam time and when the current time is equal to exam time then he/she will be directly redirected to the question paper page.

  • How to measure productivity loss from slow PCs running Visual Studio?

    - by sunpech
    Many PCs we have on the development team are out-dated and are very slow to run Visual Studio 2008. They should very much be replaced with newer machines. But there's a general reluctance on management/company to buy new machines. How do we come up with numbers and benchmarks to show that these slow PCs are causing a loss in productivity? Obviously we can't call them to sit down with us as we build solutions and/or open various files. Is there an objective way to come up with some kind of reliable numbers that non-technical people can understand? It'd be nice to have a way to measure this across an entire organization on many different PCs running Visual Studio. I'm looking for an answer that does better than using a physical stopwatch. :)

  • How can I (reasonably) precisely perform an action every N milliseconds?

    - by Jon Cage
    I have a machine which uses an NTP client to sync up to internet time so it's system clock should be fairly accurate. I've got an application which I'm developing which logs data in real time, processes it and then passes it on. What I'd like to do now is output that data every N milliseconds aligned with the system clock. So for example if I wanted to do 20ms intervals, my oututs ought to be something like this: 13:15:05:0000 13:15:05:0020 13:15:05:0040 13:15:05:0060 I've seen suggestions for using the stopwatch class, but that only measures time spans as opposed to looking for specific time stamps. The code to do this is running in it's own thread, so should be a problem if I need to do some relatively blocking calls. Any suggestions on how to achieve this to a reasonable (close to or better than 1ms precision would be nice) would be very gratefully received.

  • An observation on .NET loops – foreach, for, while, do-while

    It’s very common that .NET programmers use “foreach” loop for iterating through collections. Following is my observation whilst I was testing simple scenario on loops. “for” loop is 30% faster than “foreach” and “while” loop is 50% faster than “foreach”. “do-while” is bit faster than “while”. Someone may feel that how does it make difference if I’m iterating only 1000 times in a loop. This test case is only for simple iteration. According to the "Data structure" concepts, best and worst cases are completely based on the data we provide to the algorithm. so we can not conclude that a "foreach" algorithm is not good. All I want to tell that we need to be little cautious even choosing the loops. Example:- You might want to chose quick sort when you want to sort more numbers. At the same time bubble sort may be effective than quick sort when you want to sort less numbers. Take a simple scenario, a request of a simple web application fetches the data of 10000 (10K) rows and iterating them for some business logic. Think, this application is being accessed by 1000 (1K) people simultaneously. In this simple scenario you are ending up with 10000000 (10Million or 1 Crore) iterations. below is the test scenario with simple console application to test 100 Million records. using System;using System.Collections.Generic;using System.Diagnostics;namespace ConsoleApplication1{ class Program { static void Main(string[] args) { var sw = new Stopwatch(); var numbers = GetSomeNumbers(); sw.Start(); foreach (var item in numbers) { } sw.Stop(); Console.WriteLine( String.Format("\"foreach\" took {0} milliseconds", sw.ElapsedMilliseconds)); sw.Reset(); sw.Start(); for (int i = 0; i < numbers.Count; i++) { } sw.Stop(); Console.WriteLine( String.Format("\"for\" loop took {0} milliseconds", sw.ElapsedMilliseconds)); sw.Reset(); sw.Start(); var it = 0; while (it++ < numbers.Count) { } sw.Stop(); Console.WriteLine( String.Format("\"while\" loop took {0} milliseconds", sw.ElapsedMilliseconds)); sw.Reset(); sw.Start(); var it2 = 0; do { } while (it2++ < numbers.Count); sw.Stop(); Console.WriteLine( String.Format("\"do-while\" loop took {0} milliseconds", sw.ElapsedMilliseconds)); } #region Get me 10Crore (100 Million) numbers private static List<int> GetSomeNumbers() { var lstNumbers = new List<int>(); var count = 100000000; for (var i = 1; i <= count; i++) { lstNumbers.Add(i); } return lstNumbers; } #endregion Get me some numbers }} In above example, I was just iterating through 100 Million numbers. You can see the time to execute various  loops provided in .NET Output "foreach" took 1108 milliseconds "for" loop took 727 milliseconds "while" loop took 596 milliseconds "do-while" loop took 594 milliseconds   Press any key to continue . . . So I feel we need to be careful while choosing the looping strategy. Please comment your thoughts. span.fullpost {display:none;}

  • Perf4j Not Logging to Separate File

    - by Jehud
    I setup some stop watch calls in my code to measure some code blocks and all the messages are going into my primary log and not into the timing log. The perfStats.log file gets created just fine but all the messages go to the root log which I didn't think was supposed to happen according to the docs I've read. Is there something obvious I'm missing here? Example log4j.xml <!-- This file appender is used to output aggregated performance statistics --> <appender name="fileAppender" class="org.apache.log4j.FileAppender"> <param name="File" value="perfStats.log"/> <layout class="org.apache.log4j.PatternLayout"> <param name="ConversionPattern" value="%m%n"/> </layout> </appender> <!-- Loggers --> <!-- The Perf4J logger. Note that org.perf4j.TimingLogger is the value of the org.perf4j.StopWatch.DEFAULT_LOGGER_NAME constant. Also, note that additivity is set to false, which is usually what is desired - this means that timing statements will only be sent to this logger and NOT to upstream loggers. --> <logger name="org.perf4j.TimingLogger" additivity="false"> <level value="INFO"/> <appender-ref ref="CoalescingStatistics"/> </logger> <root> <priority value="info"/> <appender-ref ref="STDOUT-DEBUG"/> </root>

  • Is SQLDataReader slower than using the command line utility sqlcmd?

    - by Andrew
    I was recently advocating to a colleague that we replace some C# code that uses the sqlcmd command line utility with a SqlDataReader. The old code uses: System.Diagnostics.ProcessStartInfo procStartInfo = new System.Diagnostics.ProcessStartInfo("cmd", "/c " + sqlCmd); wher sqlCmd is something like "sqlcmd -S " + serverName + " -y 0 -h-1 -Q " + "\"" + "USE [" + database + "]" + ";+ txtQuery.Text +"\"";\ The results are then parsed using regular expressions. I argued that using a SQLDataReader woud be more in line with industry practices, easier to debug and maintain and probably faster. However, the SQLDataReader approach is at least the same speed and quite possibly slower. I believe I'm doing everything correctly with SQLDataReader. The code is: using (SqlConnection connection = new SqlConnection()) { try { SqlConnectionStringBuilder builder = new SqlConnectionStringBuilder(connectionString); connection.ConnectionString = builder.ToString(); ; SqlCommand command = new SqlCommand(queryString, connection); connection.Open(); SqlDataReader reader = command.ExecuteReader(); // do stuff w/ reader reader.Close(); } catch (Exception ex) { outputMessage += (ex.Message); } } I've used System.Diagnostics.Stopwatch to time both approaches and the command line utility (called from C# code) does seem faster (20-40%?). The SqlDataReader has the neat feature that when the same code is called again, it's lightening fast, but for this application we don't anticipate that. I have already done some research on this problem. I note that the command line utility sqlcmd uses OLE DB technology to hit the database. Is that faster than ADO.NET? I'm really suprised, especially since the command line utility approach involves starting up a process. I really thought it would be slower. Any thoughts? Thanks, Dave

I currently have it writing results in CSV format to its own log file using the AsyncCoalescingStatisticsAppender and a StatisticsCsvLayout on the file appender. My question is; when I try and use the --graph option from the command line (using the perf4j jar) it isn't populating the data points- it isn't populating anything. Are my appenders set incorrectly? The log file contains hundreds (sometimes thousands) of data points of about 10 different tag names. <appender name="perfAppender" class="org.apache.log4j.FileAppender"> <param name="File" value="perfStats.log"/> <layout class="org.perf4j.log4j.StatisticsCsvLayout"> </layout> </appender> <appender name="CoalescingStatistics" class="org.perf4j.log4j.AsyncCoalescingStatisticsAppender"> <!-- The TimeSlice option is used to determine the time window for which all received StopWatch logs are aggregated to create a single GroupedTimingStatistics log. Here we set it to 10 seconds, overriding the default of 30000 ms --> <param name="TimeSlice" value="10000"/> <appender-ref ref="ConsoleAppender"/> <appender-ref ref="CompositeRollingFileAppender"/> <appender-ref ref="perfAppender"/> </appender>

  • F#: Tell me what I'm missing about using Async.Parallel

    - by JBristow
    ok, so I'm doing ProjectEuler Problem #14, and I'm fiddling around with optimizations in order to feel f# out. in the following code: let evenrule n = n / 2L let oddrule n = 3L * n + 1L let applyRule n = if n % 2L = 0L then evenrule n else oddrule n let runRules n = let rec loop a final = if a = 1L then final else loop (applyRule a) (final + 1L) n, loop (int64 n) 1L let testlist = seq {for i in 3 .. 2 .. 1000000 do yield i } let getAns sq = sq |> Seq.head let seqfil (a,acc) (b,curr) = if acc = curr then (a,acc) else if acc < curr then (b,curr) else (a,acc) let pmap f l = seq { for a in l do yield async {return f a} } |> Seq.map Async.RunSynchronously let pmap2 f l = seq { for a in l do yield async {return f a} } |> Async.Parallel |> Async.RunSynchronously let procseq f l = l |> f runRules |> Seq.reduce seqfil |> fst let timer = System.Diagnostics.Stopwatch() timer.Start() let ans1 = testlist |> procseq Seq.map // 837799 00:00:08.6251990 printfn "%A\t%A" ans1 timer.Elapsed timer.Reset() timer.Start() let ans2 = testlist |> procseq pmap printfn "%A\t%A" ans2 timer.Elapsed // 837799 00:00:12.3010250 timer.Reset() timer.Start() let ans3 = testlist |> procseq pmap2 printfn "%A\t%A" ans3 timer.Elapsed // 837799 00:00:58.2413990 timer.Reset() Why does the Async.Parallel code run REALLY slow in comparison to the straight up map? I know I shouldn't see that much of an effect, since I'm only on a dual core mac. Please note that I do NOT want help solving problem #14, I just want to know what's up with my parallel code.

  • Perf4J Graph Output from Log File

  • ios 4.1 doesn't call Phonegap API

    - by Johannes Klauß
    I'm working on a cross platform app for Android 2.2 and iOS 4.1 (dev devices). On Android everything works fine (accelerometer and geolocation) even if it's a little laggy. On iOS it's way more smooth, but he doesn't call the Phonegap functions. That's my JS code: var watchID = null; var shaking = { left: false, right: true }; function startWatch() { // Update acceleration every 100 ms var options = { frequency : 100 }; watchID = navigator.accelerometer.watchAcceleration(function(acceleration) { if(acceleration.x < -8) { shaking.left = true; } else if(acceleration.x > 8) { shaking.right = true; } if(shaking.left && shaking.right) { navigator.notification.vibrate(500); shaking.left = false; shaking.right = false; stopWatch(); } }, null, options); } I just call it with <a href="" onclick="startWatch();">start Accel</a> But iOS doesn't react at all. Is there any special call you need to do in iOS?

  • How can I improve the performance of LinqToSql queries that use EntitySet properties?

    - by DanM
    I'm using LinqToSql to query a small, simple SQL Server CE database. I've noticed that any operations involving sub-properties are disappointingly slow. For example, if I have a Customer table that is referenced by an Order table, LinqToSql will automatically create an EntitySet<Order> property. This is a nice convenience, allowing me to do things like Customer.Order.Where(o => o.ProductName = "Stopwatch"), but for some reason, SQL Server CE hangs up pretty bad when I try to do stuff like this. One of my queries, which isn't really that complicated takes 3-4 seconds to complete. I can get the speed up to acceptable, even fast, if I just grab the two tables individually and convert them to List<Customer> and List<Order>, then join then manually with my own query, but this is throwing out a lot of what makes LinqToSql so appealing. So, I'm wondering if I can somehow get the whole database into RAM and just query that way, then occasionally save it. Is this possible? How? If not, is there anything else I can do to boost the performance besides resorting to doing all the joins manually? Note: My database in its initial state is about 250K and I don't expect it to grow to more than 1-2Mb. So, loading the data into RAM certainly wouldn't be a problem from a memory point of view. Update Here are the table definitions for the example I used in my question: create table Order ( Id int identity(1, 1) primary key, ProductName ntext null ) create table Customer ( Id int identity(1, 1) primary key, OrderId int null references Order (Id) )

  • Time to start a counter on client-side.

    - by Felipe
    Hi everybody, I'm developing an web application using asp.net mvc, and i need to do a stopwatch (chronometer) (with 30 seconds preprogrammed to start in a certain moment) on client-side using the time of the server, by the way, the client's clock can't be as the server's clock. So, i'm using Jquery to call the server by JSon and get the time, but it's very stress because each one second I call the server to get time, something like this: $(function() { GetTimeByServer(); }); function GetTimeByServer() { $.getJSon('/Home/Time', null, function(result) { if (result.SecondsPending < 30) { // call another function to start an chronometer } else { window.SetTimeout(GetTimeByServer, 1000); //call again each 1 second! } }); } It works fine, but when I have more than 3 or 4 call like this, the browser slowly but works! I'd like to know, how improve more performace in client side, or if is there any way to do this... is there any way to client listen the server like a "socket" to know if the chronometer should start... PS: Sorry for my english! thanks Cheers
