• Strange stuff in apache log

  Hi lads, I'm building some kind of webapp, and currently the whole thing runs on my machine. I was combing down my logs, and found several "strange" log entries that made me a bit paranoid. • Strange behavior of excel 2007 on WinXP

  I'm on a machine that had quite some bloat ware and no update in ages. I made all the updates, removed the bloatware and cleaned using ccleaner. So far so good. Now excel shows some really strange behavior when I open .xls files through windows. The current behavior is: it opens a new excel process window which will then stay empty. One has then to drag the xls file into the window to open it. I would like to restore the default behavior. So far I have tried: running the Microsoft Office Diagnosis copied excel related registry keys from a machine with working excel and imported them had a look into the registry entry for .xls files myself - which seems correct. It was of no use and I'm out of ideas. I would try to avoid a reinstall as we have a very bureaucratic IT department and the machine then would be gone for some undetermined time period. So any idea what to do would be great.

• Strange noise from my laptop when it is closed

  I am fan of powerfull PCs with huge wide screen monitors but I have bought an laptop as gift to my parents. This is the description: "second-handed" lenovo (and there is a sign "ThinkPad" Intel Core Duo CPU T6570 2.10 GHz 64 bits Windows 7 Ultimate and the issue is that when the laptop is turn on and then closed, after a interval of time (I am not sure how much exactly but I believe it is several hours) a strange noise come from the laptop. The noise is something like a "start-up" noise of old computers. I first thought this is some hardware issue but everything seems to work fine. Has anyone an idea what can cause this type of noise or a what can I do in order to track the problem down? I am not sure if this is a important thing, but the laptop is always connected to the power. Note: I have just noticed that the sound is generated again when the laptop is closed and then opened. • Recently disinfected laptop still has strange issues

  This computer was heavily infected with viruses recently. The hard drive had to be taken out and cleaned by a different machine. The hard drive is now virus free, but Windows still has some strange issues that I need some help fixing. I've re-installed Chrome, but I still have issues with it. It's the same for Firefox and any other browser. When I plug in a USB flash drive, everything is fine, except when it asks me what to do with it I get what you see in the third image. I believe this is Windows 7. Any ideas? Here are the images of some of the issues:

  Ok, this is very strange. Recently, i noticed that every 10-15 seconds, there would be this faint, annoying duh-dum sound coming out of my speakers. (hard to describe. sounds somewhat like the sound windows makes when you unplug a USB device, but not as pronounced and much quieter). I closed every app and ended as many processes as I could, but the sound persists. I look at the volume mixer and sure enough, when the sound occurs, there is a little spike in the level under "System Sounds". I haven't installed any hardware or software in the last several weeks. This started recently - completely out of the blue. Does anyone have any insight?

• Strange Exchange 2010 Mailbox issues

  A little bit of information on my environment. I have 2 Exchange 2010 mailbox servers setup in a DAG, connected to a VNX SAN via fiber for the mailbox database disks. One of the servers seems to be working fine as it isn't throwing any similar errors but the other has been receiving strange errors in Event Viewer. I haven't been able to find a pattern to when these happen and I'm not really sure what I should be looking at to troubleshoot this. At this point I am wondering if the issue resides on the SAN or if this is because of an improper shutdown or something else on the Exchange side of things? • Strange behavior from Firefox and Paypal Plugin

  Ok, so I use the paypal plugin with firefox, which is really nice because you can generate single use credit-cards on the fly. However, recently it's been acting strange. Normally, when you use the plugin, a drop-down window open in firefox. However, at some point (I'm not sure exactly when it happened, because I thought it wasn't working for a while) the drop-down window started appearing in thunderbird. As in, I click on the plugin button in firefox, and the plugin window immediately opens in Thunderbird. If Thunderbird is closed, the plugin does not open at all. I can use it normally this way (everything works except the receipt-saving function). but the whole affair seems a little odd to me. Is there any reason that could cause things to be redirected from one mozilla-application-window to another mozilla-application-window?   I'll try to be as specific as I can be: Server is running SBS 2008 R2 (with all updates) Server is connected to the internet Server has 2 NIC's, one is disabled Server is running RDP Service (accessible directly from the internet, I know, not as secure as it should be) Computers A and B are on the same local net. Computers A and B are both Windows 7. Users X and Y are both admins on the server Computer A can connect as user X to the server with mstsc Computer A can connect as user Y to the server with mstsc Computer B can connect as user X to the server with mstsc computer B CANNOT connect as user Y to the server with mstsc! The last point is the problem, I get an authentication error. This used to work flawlessly for the last year. The server and desktops have been rebooted. I find it very strange....

• Strange ports on default install of W7

  I have a base new install of windows 7, and when I went to look for something else I saw the attached netstat output. What concerns me is that this is Windows + Truecrypt + drivers, nothing else installed. The sequential high ranged ports belonging to several different seemingly not out of place services seemed odd. So I torched the install, used Active@ to scrub the disk, re-downloaded the ISO from MSDN, and did a fresh reinstall, viola, they are there again. It just seems out of place, I have seen a many netstats over the years, this one just strikes me as odd, so I started thinking rootkit? (JUst FYI, when I reloaded I named the machine "Error" so that is why the task manager reads the computer name as such.) So I would like to know if anyone else could explain it, and therefore is may be normal, or would they be worried as well, and should I start considering I have some very strange thing occuring on my network?

• something strange about Win-XP's command shell

  I wrote the following command in windows XP's command shell and something strange happened: C:\Folder1> copy sample.txt : Because of my typing mistake, I wrote ":" instead of "D:" ... but it copied the sample.txt to somewhere I cant find! I searched my whole HDD for sample.txt but the only instance of this file is the original one which is in C:\Folder1. Do you know where ":" path actually is in Win-XP command shell? You might say ":" is current path and the file has been copied onto itself but look at this: If you run that command for the first time, this will be the result: 1 file copied. but the next time you run that command it will ask you: overwrite sample.txt? (yes/no/all) So if it were writing the file onto itself, both results would have to be the same but they aren't. Thanks in advance for your help.

  i have strange problem with my computer. i tried to turn it on, the computer was started ok, but i didnt see anything on screen. i tried to understand what cause the problem. its was'nt the HD or the screen. when i opened the computer, i saw that the fan connected to my motherboard didnt work. the funny thing is that i drove to a friend of mine, so he would fix me the computer, and when we tried to open the computer there it worked somehow and the fan worked also. when i came back home the computer again didnt work and the fan didnt work as well. does someone know what can cause the problem?

• Arch linux - strange behaviour after installing fglrx

  I have a problem with drivers on arch linux. I installed catalyst through unnoficial catalyst repo as wiki says. pacman -S catalyst catalyst-utils aticonfig --initial After this operation i rebooted the system. KDM loaded succesfully, but when i tried to switch to console (ctrl+alt+1/2/3) i saw only some strange dots, like pixels from the text were splitted on the whole screen. I was able to go back to kdm and enter the account details tho. This gave me a hang just before kde loaded. Here's a video where i'm showing above actions. Anybody knows what caused the problem? Open drivers suck the battery 2x faster. ___________EDIT_____________ Ok, i found a sollution, so i'm posting if someone else shares my problem. Catalyst does not support KMS, so you need to disable it from grub. You must know where are your /etc and /boot paritions mounted. If you have only one partition for / it's even simplier. Mount / on /mnt mount /dev/sdaX /mnt where X is number of the partition where is your / installed arch-chroot /mnt nano /etc/default/grub and add line: GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX="nomodeset" save and quit then run (this will delete your windows grub configuration) grub-mkconfig -o /boot/grub/grub.cfg exit umount /mnt reboot

• Acer Aspire One -- strange battery problem, charges only up to ~90%

  I have this strange problem on the acer aspire one d250. It happened already once before, stayed for about two weeks, and then "fixed itself". The problem is as follows: the battery can't seem to get fully charged; ie the indicator is stuck at about 90% (it's probably not a software problem -- I have ArchLinux and Windows 7 installed and both report exactly the same) and it never passes that value, but it still shows the status as "charging" (I tried everything I could think of -- leaving it charging for extremely long amounts of time, doing a few complete charge-recharge cycles, removing/reinserting the battery, cleaning the connectors, even updating the BIOS, etc., and nothing helped). Also, when it is getting charged, it charges pretty fast until about 70% and then progresses extremely slowly. The battery holds the charge that appears on the battery indicator normally. Just can't get the battery to charge fully -- I can't get it past the 90%. At first I thought this would be a simple battery failure (even if the computer is not that old, about 6-7 months), but as I mentioned it happened once before, and then one day it fixed itself. I tried contacting Acer about this, but the support was not helpful, completely stupid, it seemed like they used canned responses, the usual. Any thoughts on how to fix this?

• Strange ASP.NET Queue Performance Counters Behavior?

  We have an ASP.NET 2.0 site running in classic mode. I am seeing very strange behavior in the performance counter values. Perhaps these are bugs (I've been all over Google trying to verify this, without much luck), or perhaps it is just my inexperience with monitoring these things. This PerfMon graph (http://imgur.com/Jv5io5J) represents a load test where I add up to 350 virtual users to the site, at a rate of about 1/sec, performing relatively simple page browsing. At the end of the test, I gradually taper off the number of users. This is a 4 CPU server. Machine.config settings for are at the defaults. The solid blue line is ASP.NET Apps v2.x\Requests Executing for the application in question. The profile makes perfect sense, with a quick ramp-up to 32 executing requests (minWorkerThreads x 4CPUs), followed by a slower ramp-up to 48 ((maxWorkerThreads - minWorkerThreads) x 4CPUs). The solid yellow line is ASP.NET v2.x\Requests Queued. Again, this makes sense: after the initial 32 request threads are activated, the queue begins to build as new thread initialization can't keep pace with incoming requests. But as executing requests reaches its highest possible value of 48, the counter for ASP.NET Apps v2.x\Requests Queued (green solid line) suddenly springs to life and maintains step with the yellow counter. As far as I can tell, and with no other apps running on the server, these two counters should have had the same values from the start. One other odd thing: The counter for ASP.NET v2.x\Request Wait Time (dotted yellow line) also does not spring to life until executing requests reaches 48. Shouldn't I be seeing values here from the moment ASP.NET v2.x\Requests Queued begins to build? And likewise, why would ASP.NET Apps v2.x\Request Execution Time (dotted blue) increase significantly only after that peak of 48 is reached? Shouldn't it ramp-up gradually along with queued requests?

• Strange windows boot problem - My computer won't boot from hard disk

  Hello, Until yesterday, I had windows XP installed on my computer. After installing the OS, and setting the BIOS to boot from the hard-disk first, I discovered a strange problem - the OS wasn't booted and the only way I could get it to load was to insert a windows installation disk, enter repair mode, do "fixboot" and restart. The problem only occured when the computer was booted after shut-down. If I only restarted it, everything worked fine. Yesterday, I upgraded my XP to win7 and the problem persists. I tried the same "trick" I did with XP to get it to load, by entering repair and doing "bootrec /fixmbr" and "bootrec /fixboot" but that didn't work (and when I run "scanos" it didn't find any windows installations). Eventually, I got it to load by changing the settings in the BIOS to boot from CD first and HD second, removing the installation disk from the drive, letting it fail to boot from CD and then re-insert the disk. Anyone has any idea what may be the cause or how can I investigate this issue? Thanks! Marina

• Strange focus bug in Firefox (chrome vs content)

  Here is a strange bug I'm experiencing in Firefox: I can only use either the chrome, or the content, not both at the same time! For example, I can click on tabs and the toolbar icons, focus the search bar and write in it as well as the address bar, but if I try to click on anything in the content (eg a link or a textfield to write something), then nothing happens. The mouse pointer doesn't change either, it just stays a pointer when I hover over things, and the links I hover don't react either. But if I alt-tab to another program (or click on it in the taskbar), then back to Firefox, then I can use the area that I click on. So if I click somewhere on the webpage to get focus back to Firefox, then I can click on links and write things (like this text), but I cannot click on tabs or refresh or anything else in the chrome. I can't even click on the minimize, restore and close icons! To get focus back on the chrome I have to alt-tab to another program, and then click on the chrome to get back to Firefox to be able to use the chrome again. I've tried closing and starting it again, but the bug is still there. I have experienced this before, but I don't remember what I did to fix it. This bug seems to occur sometimes when I wake up the computer from standby, but I leave by computer in standby all the time, so that is not the only factor.

• What does this strange network/subnet mask mean?

  I'm configuring a new ASA 5505 for deployment as a VPN endpoint in a remote office. After configuring it and connecting the VPN, I get the following messages: WARNING: Pool (10.6.89.200) overlap with existing pool. ERROR: IP address,mask <10.10.0.0,93.137.70.9> doesn't pair 10.6.89.200 is the address I configured for the ASA. It has the subnet mask 255.255.255.0. The ip address 10.10.0.0 corresponds to one of our subnets, but it certainly wouldn't have a subnet mask of 93.137.70.9. That looks more like a public IP address (and resolves to an ADSL connection somewhere). I am sure if we had such a subnet configured, that it would indeed overlap with 10.6.89.200. There is no reference to 93.137.70.9 in the config of this ASA or our head office ASA. Can anyone shed light on what is going on here? The sudden appearance of a strange subnet mask is a bit alarming.

• Parallels Plesk returning strange numbers

  Hi everyone, As a relatively new Server Admin I've become a bit confused by some statistics Parallels Plesk Panel 10.0.1 is returning to me. I have a domain ('subscription') set up, mysite.com. Mysite.com only hosts files, mostly images Its file contents use up about 390MB of disk space Here's a screenshot: this is what Plesk is reporting mysite.com to use: And some more info: Now this is pretty confusing... I thought at first my site might have been hacked and had contents written to disk, but I checked and all is in order, nothing has been hacked into as far as I can tell. So I had a look in the site's CP for some more in-depth statistics, and this is what's returned... Now - sod's law - when I go to check my disk space statistics in more depth via the control panel, this morning it says "The data were not collected yet." - not too sure what that means, but, last night when I checked it was reporting something odd. It said Files were using up 390MB, but 1.80GB or so were being used up by 'Mail Accounts'. This is really strange, as there are no mail accounts set up for the domain. The only hint of 'mail' there is, is the catchall set up to forward *@mysite.com to a separate, ISP-hosted email account. Any ideas anybody? I can post more details if you need it. • PhpMyAdmin import/export - strange character encoding issues.

  Hello, I'm migrating a site to a new host, and there are a couple of databases on there. There's no SSH access so I'm stuck with phpmyadmin. The issue is that certain characters (namely just whitespace) seems to being corrupt on the new site (same html, and apache doesn't seem to be messing with any encodings - you can see the strange characters have changed when I use less on my linux machine after downloading a table dump from both servers.) The issue isn't as bad if I import into the new database as utf-8 - whitespace characters only have one funny A type symbol instead of two. I've been trying various combinations of character encoding etc to no avail. Exporting from: phpMyAdmin 2.6.2 MySQL 4.1.20 MySQL connection collation: utf8_general_ci MySQL charset: UTF-8 Unicode (utf8) Collation on tables and their fields is: latin1_swedish_ci Importing to: phpMyAdmin - 2.11.9.2 MySQL client version: 5.0.45 MySQL charset: UTF-8 Unicode (utf8) MySQL connection collation: utf8_general_ci The import sql has this kind of thing in it: ENGINE=MyISAM DEFAULT CHARSET=latin1 AUTO_INCREMENT=192 ; I get the impression this is actually a bug or something with mysqldump as nothing seems to work.. does anyone have any insight into this? • Strange battery behavior on laptop

  My laptop is behaving rather strangely lately, and I was hoping to get some idea as to what may be causing such symptoms. The problem: When charging, very minute or so it loses connectivity with the AC adapter for a split second, and regains it back immediately. When this happens the little light that indicates the computer is plugged in does flicker off and back on, but I checked the adapter by replacing the battery on my laptop, and this indeed solves the problem, so it is probably the battery which is at fault, not the adapter (I also tried to move the adapter's wire around just to make sure it had nothing to do with torn wires). I suppose that the obvious solution is to get a new battery, but as far as battery defects go- this is a rather strange one; it loses connection with the adapter, but still powers the computer, and changing the power setting to a balanced plan (was maximum performance) seem to have solved the problem too. Is there a chance this is not simply the battery, but some kind of other electronic defect? And if not, what can cause it to behave so strangely? PS I tried to recalibrate it- didn't help.

EDIT: I tried: prefixing domain to the username prefixing the server computer name to the username change the password copy/paste the password from notepad to make sure it was correct I find it very strange.... EDIT: The computers are not on the same subnet as the server. The server is at my hosting provider. All computers as all users can reach the web app that is running on the server.

• Strange problem with Google Mail and IMAP on Outlook 2007

  I work for a small non-profit organization. We have about 35 administrative employees who use e-mail. We're on a Windows network with a domain. Everyone is running XP Pro and Office 2007 with all updates/patches. We used to use POP3 mail through a local provider. However, we recently signed-up for a free Google Apps account, and we switched to IMAP mail through Google. Everyone uses Outlook 2007 as the client. For about ten days, everything was working fine. Yesterday afternoon, we suddenly developed a strange and annoying problem. Every time you send an e-mail message, a copy of your outgoing message shows up in your inbox. It's as if you're adding your own address to the CC: line of every message. Nothing has changed on our end. I was hoping that the problem was a temporary glitch that would resolve itself, but here we are about 24 hours later, and it's still happening. I searched Twitter, and there were a handful of vague messages about issues with Google mail and IMAP, but I didn't see any references to this specific problem. Any thoughts on what's going on here and how to fix it?
