  I have done some research on nagios, opennms, and zenoss but am not confident that I have found what I am looking for. The main driving force for me right now is being able to monitor backups. This includes mysql, mssql, and eventually some file system backups. We have a tool that wraps the backup process for these different systems and collects statistics. So, items like: number of databases backed up size of db backup file size of db backup file compressed time to make backup time to zip file I want to be able to A) have notifications if the jobs are not run according to schedule B) be able to set thresholds on the statistics which would trigger notifications C) I want to be able to trend and graph the statistics I am planning on sending this information to the monitoring application through an HTTP POST. Or, the monitoring application could pull it from a log file as well. However, we will have other processes with other "arbitrary" (from the monitoring system's perspective) statics that will want to monitor and trend, so flexibility is very important. The tool or tools should also be able to do general monitoring and trending of network interfaces, server load, etc. Once we get the backup monitoring in place, we will want to include those items as well. • How to antialias trendline in Excel?

  I have created a couple of line charts in Excel 2011 for Mac. The actual data line looks good and is antialiased in a nice way but when I then add a trendline it is jagged and ugly: I have tried "all" options available under Format Trendline, to no avail. There is an option "Soft Edges" but it doesn't seem to work as expected: when I increase the value there the trend line gets more and more narrow until it disappears.

• Grounded outlet on external hard drive.

  Is there any value in getting an external hard drive with a grounded power supply? Would grounding the drive protect it from a static jolt from my hand when I pick it up? I've only really ever used the huge 5.25" external housings (they usually have an integrated power supply and use the standard heavy PSU cable with ground), and I need some more but noticed while shopping that the current trend is towards smaller enclosures with the external brick (and hardly ever grounded).

• Ubuntu karmic doesn't have the version file?

  I was following this tutorial: http://articles.slicehost.com/2010/4/23/ubuntu-karmic-setup-part-2 On my ubuntu karmic version (on ec2, ami from elastic) I don't see this file: cat /etc/lsb-release It just isn't there. How can I see the version of the O/S? And shouldn't that file be there? Some people have told me ubuntu isn't really used as a server, is that true or is the trend making it more viable?

• Ms-PL Source Release for System.Web.Mvc 2

  Hot on the heels of the release of ASP.NET MVC 2 yesterday, Im happy to announce that we are releasing the source code to ASP.NET MVC 2 under the Ms-PL license, an OSI approved Open Source license. • Why are Awstats, Webalizer, and Google Analytics results so different?

  I realize that comparing Awstats and Webalizer to Google Analytics is like comparing apples to oranges, but each of them track at least basic statistics about visitors and pages. So why are there often very significant differences in their data? For example, comparing Analytics with Awstats using some numbers from a small site over the past week: Awstats 78 unique visitors 205 visits (2.62 visits/visitor) 1,072 pages (5.22 pages/visit) Google Analytics 115 unique visitors 240 visits (2.08 visits/visitor) 1,275 pages (5.31 pages/visit) They're similar on the number of visits, but page views and uniques are quite different. I'm familiar with discrepancies of a much higher magnitude on some larger sites, showing that this trend scales proportionally upward. What is the reason behind the different numbers, even when the data is quite trivial like unique visitors and page loads?

• Would using AJAX only "Add to Cart" buttons be wise?

  I want to AJAX enable all of my Add To Cart buttons because search engine bots are indexing these and not paying attention to my robots file or site map. I just don't want to loose potential customers. I have seen a number of top sites using heavily JavaScript support content, including Amazon, is it OK to follow the trend? The rest of my site progressively degrades, but I would really like to implement this because of the benefits to the customer (instant satisfaction), my infrastructure (constant page rebuilds), and allowing me to use SEO tools to optimize without the tool picking up thousands of "Add to Cart" widgets in my catalog. • Why is ubuntu so sluggish?

  I have noticed the trend that ubuntu is getting increasingly slower with each release. It used to be much faster than windows, but now it is really much slower. I have an Asus G74Sx with an i7 processor, 8Gb of RAM, and an Nvidia Geforce GTX 560M graphics card. I am currently using ubuntu 12.10, but will probably be going back to 12.04. Ubuntu is running as the native operating system. There is really no reason for terminal to take more than 25 seconds to open. I love all of the stuff behind ubuntu, what it stands for and everything, but I need to at least be able to open gedit without waiting 3 minutes for it to open. Sorry if this sounds like a rant, but I would really like to know what is going on and if there is anything I can do to get Ubuntu running at a more appropriate speed.

• What reasons are there for not using a third party version control service?

  I've recently noticed a bit of a trend for my projects as of late. I use to run my own SVN server on my VPS, but recently the nail went in the coffin for that when I got my last project migrated from my server to a Mercurial repo on Bitbucket. What are some of the ramifications to this? (disregarding the change in version control systems) It seems like there has been a huge explosion in version control hosting, and companies like Bitbucket even offer private repos for free, and Github and other such services are extremely cheap now. Also, by using them you get the benefit of their infrastructure's speed and stability. What reasons are there these days to host your own version control? The only real reason I can think of is if your source code is super top secret.

  Possible Duplicate: Should I bother supporting IE6? I'm thinking about IE6 support and when to give up on it. Do you have a percentage of total visitors figure in mind for when to drop support? Would you let a trend develop past this figure or are you just going take the first opportunity? I've seen a 44% drop in IE6 visitors in the past 12 months from 23%(ish) of visitors down to 13%(ish). Even if it was 5% it still seems too early to drop support to me (it's still 1 in every 20 users). What are people's thoughts on this?

• Pros and cons of developing modern services in Java

  I'm interested in the philosophical and architectural justification (or lack thereof) in using Java to develop in today's modern world (exclude mobile/embedded platforms of course). Why would one choose to develop (or not develop) a back-end in Java? Why would one choose to develop (or not develop) a front-end UI in Java? Why do large enterprises lean towards developing in Java rather than adopt more modern (and standardized) technologies? *disclaimer: I'm not a fan of Java in the enterprise, I'm simply curious what drives enterprises to continue the trend.

• Documenting user interfaces in a mouse-less touch UI

  “Old” apps rely on mouse pointing and tooltips to explain what a given button is for. Maybe there is text associated with the button, but you can only put so much text without wasting useful screen state. More so in a phone or tablet app. I’ve seen a trend in Google apps where they put an overlay on top of the app the first time it runs, to explain how the various pieces of UI work. I have seen this also on my Nexus phone, but don’t have a screenshot. I don’t recall a way to actually bring that help overlay back again, so that’s maybe some built-in gesture that’s missing. • Can it be useful to build an application starting with the GUI?

  The trend in application design and development seems to be starting with the "guts": the domain, then data access, then infrastructure, etc. The GUI seems to usually come later in the process. I wonder if it could ever be useful to build the GUI first... My rationale is that by building at least a prototype GUI, you gain a better idea of what needs to happen behind the scenes, and so are in a better position to start work on the domain and supporting code. I can see an issue with this practice in that if the supporting code is not yet written, there won't be much for the GUI layer to actually do. Perhaps building mock objects or throwaway classes (somewhat like is done in unit testing) would provide just enough of a foundation to build the GUI on initially. Might this be a feasible idea for a real project? Maybe we could add GDD (GUI Driven Development) to the acronym stable...
