In this Issue: Rénald Nollet, Roboblob, Laurent Bugnion, Timmy Kokke, Michael Sync(-2-), Victor Gaudioso, and Bill Reiss. Brought to you from a tiny table in my no-tell-motelTM in 'Vegas AKA "cheaper than anywhere else" and the WiFi is free and smokin'... From SilverlightCream.com: Sync your Silverlight out-of-browser application data without service but with Dropbox Rénald Nollet is in good company (Walt Ritscher) because he's demo'ing synching OOB apps with dropbox. Unit Testable WCF Web Services in MVVM and Silverlight 4 Roboblob is discussing calling WCF Web Services from a Silverlight MVVM app... something he's been avoiding up to now. Good long code and text-filled article, with the project to download. Using commands with ApplicationBarMenuItem and ApplicationBarButton in Windows Phone 7 I almost missed this post by Laurent Bugnion, on how to get around the problem of not being able to attach commands to the ApplicationBarMenuItem and ApplicationBarButton in WP7. He gets around it with (gasp) code behind :) Introducing jLight – Talking to the DOM using Silverlight and jQuery. Oh boy... if you haven't been using jQuery yet, this should get it going for you... Timmy Kokke has produced jLight which brings jQuery into Silverlight for ease of DOM interaction... and it's on CodePlex! Test-Driven Development in Windows Phone7 – Part 1: Unit Testing with Silverlight for Phone7 Michael Sync's starting a series on TDD with Silverlight on WP7. Great tutorial and all the code is available. Tip: “Object reference not set to an instance of an object” Error in Silverlight for Windows Phone 7 Michael Sync also has a tip up for the resolution of an error we've all seen in all sorts of development, but now in WP7, and the workaround is deceptively simple. New Silverlight Video Tutorial: How to Create Gradients Victor Gaudioso has a new video tutorial up for creating gradients in Expression Blend... don't fumble around in Blend... learn from the master! Space Rocks game step 8: Hyperspace Bill Reiss is up to episode 8 in his Silverlight game series now... this latest is on Hyperspace ... don'cha wish you could just do that? My trip to 'Vegas would have been a lot faster :) Stay in the 'Light! New Silverlight Video Tutorial: How to Fire a Visual State based upon the value of a Boolean Variable Victor Gaudioso's latest video tutorial is up and is on selecting and firing a video state based on a boolean... project included. Simultaneously calling multiple methods on a WCF service from silverlight Ola Karlsson details a problem he had where he was calling multiple WCF services to pull all his data and had problems... turns out it was a blocking call and he found the solution in the forums and details it all out for us... actually, a search at SilverlightCream.com would have found one of the better posts listed once you knew the problem :) Securing Your Silverlight Applications Josh Twist has an article in MSDN on Silverlight Security. He talks about Windows, forms, and .NET authorization then WCF, WCF Data, cross domain and XAP files. He also has some good external links. Template/View selection with MEF in Silverlight Josh Twist points out that this next article is just a simple demonstration, but he's discussing, and provides code for, a MEF-driven ViewModel navigation scheme with animation on the navigation. Workaround for accessing some ASMX services from Silverlight 4 Are you having problems hitting you asmx web service with Silverlight 4? Yeah... others are too! Yavor Georgiev at the Silverlight Web Services Team blog has a post up about it... why it's a sometimes problem and a workaround for it. Using Silverlight 4 features to create a Zune-like context menu Jeff Wilcox used Silverlight 4 and the Toolkit to create some samples of menus, then demonstrates a duplication of the Zune menu. You Already Are A Windows Phone 7 Programmer Jesse Liberty is demonstrating the fact that Silverlight developers are WP7 developers by creating a Silverlight and a WP7 app side by side using the same code... this is a closer look at the Silverlight TV presentation he did. WP7 PerformanceProgressBar in depth WIndowsPhoneGeek has a post up discussing the WP7 Performance bar from the Windows Phone Toolkit. This is an update on the Toolkit based on the Feb 2011 release. Great explanation of the PerformanceProgressBar, external links, and sample code. Getting data out of WP7 WMAppManifest is easy with Coding4Fun PhoneHelper Next WindowsPhoneGeek has a post up about the PhoneHelper in the Coding4Fun TOolkit, and using it to get data out of the WMAppManifest easily. • How to convert xlsx files into 2003 xls files programatically in C#?

    - by Victor Rodrigues
I've found ExcelPackage, a better library than Excel Interop API to create and mantain programatically excel sheets, but they are generated in .xlsx. Most of people that will see the files have only office 2003 installed, so I need to convert, in my C# code, the final result into a .xls file. Do you know any way to do it in C# code? ** UPDATE I'm trying to use SaveAs method, but it doesn't work, it just doesn't do anything, or return the error 0x800A03EC .

  • Having problems using haml and rails3

    - by Victor Rodrigues
After installing rails3, I'm experiencing problems when trying to use haml with it. I have the updated gem installed, and after rails PROJECT_NAME , I did haml --rails in its root. It apparently had worked fine, since I have haml folder inside plugins, init.rb, as expected. But when I try to rake, or rails server, I get: rake aborted! no such file to load -- haml With --trace I get this: ** Invoke default (first_time) ** Invoke test (first_time) ** Execute test ** Invoke • Vim: how to undo a regex with a new regex?

    - by Victor Tihomirov
my I have here a text that has been encrypted in Vi this way: 1,$s/\(.\)\1/&&/g 1,$s/\(.\)\(.\)\2\2\2/\2\2\2\1\2/g 1,$s/\(.\)\(.\)\(.\)\(.\)/\3\1\4\2/g 1,$s/\(...\)\(...\)/\2\1/g The task is to write a new regex for each regex in order to undo the the changes, so-called decrypting of the text. I figured out how to undo the last 2 changes: :1,$s/\(...\)\(...\)/\2\1/g :1,$s/\(.\)\(.\)\(.\)\(.\)/\2\4\1\3/g I'd like you to explain me what do the first two regex do. What does \1 or \2\2\2 mean before the forward slash? I assume that after the slash they change place (but wouldn't it be enough to just write \2\1 instead of \2\2\2\1\2(what does it mean?)? I just don't get it). And what does & or && mean? Thank you

  • Error editing a blob field in ArcGIS Engine

    - by Victor Grigoriu
    I have a GIS layer backed by a MSSQL db. The features on the layer have, say, one field of type esriFieldTypeString and one of type esriFieldTypeBlob. I can edit the string field just fine, but, when I try to edit a blob, StopEditOperation() throws a very generic exception (message: "Error HRESULT E_FAIL has been returned from a call to a COM component.", error code: -2147467259). I couldn't find anything related in the server log. Does anyone have any idea what's going on? IServerContext serverContext = GetServerContext(agsConn, serviceName); ILayer layer = GetILayer(layerName, serverContext); IWorkspace workspace = GetIWorkspace(layer); var feature = GetIFeature(objectId, workspace, layer); var workspaceEdit = (IWorkspaceEdit)workspace; workspaceEdit.StartEditing(false); workspaceEdit.StartEditOperation(); var index = feature.Fields.FindField(featureDetailName); IField field = feature.Fields.get_Field(index); byte[] byteArray = {1, 2, 3}; MemoryBlobStream blob = new MemoryBlobStream(); ((IMemoryBlobStreamVariant)blob).ImportFromVariant(byteArray); if (field.CheckValue(blob)) { feature.set_Value(index, blob); } feature.Store(); workspaceEdit.StopEditOperation(); workspaceEdit.StopEditing(true); serverContext.RemoveAll(); serverContext.ReleaseContext();

  • Vim syntax highlighting not working (but works in gvim?)

    - by victor
I've followed all instructions given on this site with an empty .vim folder, but for some reason, python highlighting is not working on my system. It only highlights the comments and a few variables - nothing like the picture. http://concisionandconcinnity.blogspot.com/2009/07/vim-part-i-improved-python-syntax.html Is there some other setting I am forgetting? I'm also using ubuntu 10.04 if that matters. A weird other note - it works in gvim, but not vim?

  • How to set binding in xaml to my own variable

    - by Victor
Hello. I have an object in the code: public class UserLogin { bool _IsUserLogin = false; public bool IsUserLogin { get { return _IsUserLogin; } set { _IsUserLogin = value; } } public UserLogin() { _IsUserLogin = false; } } .... public static UserLogin LoginState; ..... LoginState = new UserLogin(); And I need to set bindings to Button.IsEnabled property. I.e. when user not login yet - some buttons are disabled. How can this been done? I have try in xaml: <Button DataContext="LoginState" IsEnabled="{Binding Path=IsUserLogin}"> but, this dos't work and OutputWindow says: System.Windows.Data Error: 39 : BindingExpression path error: 'IsUserLogin' property not found on 'object'. I also have try to set Button.DataContext property to LoginState in the code, but have XamlParseException. I also read this one [http://stackoverflow.com/questions/1829758/wpf-binding-in-xaml-to-an-object-created-in-the-code-behind][1] but still can't set bindings. Below is my code to form a url: NSString *url = [NSString stringWithFormat:@"http://ajax.googleapis.com/ajax/services/search/local?v=1.0&q=%@", keyword]; NSMutableURLRequest *request = [[[NSMutableURLRequest alloc] init] autorelease]; [request setURL:[NSURL URLWithString:url]]; [request setHTTPMethod:@"GET"]; //get response NSHTTPURLResponse* urlResponse = nil; NSError *error = [[[NSError alloc] init] autorelease]; NSData *responseData = [NSURLConnection sendSynchronousRequest:request returningResponse:&urlResponse error:&error]; NSString *result = [[NSString alloc] initWithData:responseData encoding:NSUTF8StringEncoding]; When the keyword refers to english characters, it works fine, but when refers to chinese characters(encoded in UTF8, such as '???' whose UTF8 code is 'e5a4a9 e5ae89 e997a8'), it will report NSURLErrorBadURL error(-1000, Returned when a URL is sufficiently malformed that a URL request cannot be initiated). Why? Then I carry out further investigation, I use Safari and type in the url below: http://ajax.googleapis.com/ajax/services/search/local?v=1.0&q=??? It also works, and the output I got from Macsniffer is: /ajax/services/search/local?v=1.0&q=%E5%A4%A9%E5%AE%89%E9%97%A8 So I write a testing url directly in my app NSString *url = [NSString stringWithFormat:@"http://ajax.googleapis.com/ajax/services/search/local?v=1.0&q=%E5%A4%A9%E5%AE%89%E9%97%A8"]; And what I got from the Macsniffer is some other thing: /ajax/services/search/local?v=1.0&q=1.687891E-28750X1.417C0001416CP-102640X1.4CC2D04648FBP-9999-1.989891E+0050X1.20DC00184CC67P-953E8E99A8 It seems my keyword "%E5%A4%A9%E5%AE%89%E9%97%A8" was translated into something else. So how can I form a valid url? I do need help!

  • Opening a local file in Eclipse from the web

    - by Victor Nicollet
Right now, when I notice a problem on a page on my PHP web site, I have to look at the URL, mentally deduce what file is responsible for displaying that page, then navigate the Eclipse PDT file tree to open that file. This is annoying and uses brain power that could have been applied to solving the issue instead. I would like my PHP web site to display on every page a link that I could click to automatically open the correct file in Eclipse. I can easily compute the complete absolute path for the file I need to open (for example, open C:/xampp/htdocs/controllers/Foo/Bar.php when visiting /foo/bar), and I can make sure that Eclipse is currently open with the correct project loaded, but I'm stuck on how I can have Firefox/Chrome/IE tell Eclipse to open that specific file.

  • Facebook Like button working but not sharing

    - by Victor P

  • if_attribute sintax problem on declarative_authorization

    - by Victor Martins
I have an Organization that has_many Affiliations And a mission that has_one Organization So i can do this: m = Mission.first m.organization.affiliations A user also has_many affiliations so I can do: u = User.first u.affiliations In declarative_authorization I want a user to be able to manage a mission if he is affiliated to the organization of the mission. I'm trying this: has_permission_on :missions, :to => [:manage] do if_attribute [:affiliations, {:mission => :organization} ] => intersects_with { user.affiliations.type_admin } end But I get the error: [:affiliations, {:mission=>:organization}] is not a symbol What's wrong with the sintax?

  • if_attribute on declarative authorization

    - by Victor Martins
I have a many-to-many relationship like this: A user has_many organizations through affiliations and vice-versa. I'm using declarative organizations and I only want a user to edit a particular organization if he is affiliated and the affiliationtype attribute of affiliation is a particular value. So affiliations has 3 columns , user_id, organization_id and affiliationtype_id I can do: o = Organization.find(:first) o.affiliatons[0].user and get the user now I wish to do this: has_permission_on [:organizations], :to => :edit do if_attribute (...) end That if_attribute should see if the current user is the organization.affiliation[?].user and if the organization.affiliation[?].affiliationtype_id = "3" I hope this is syntax issue ... I really need to get this working.

  • Could CouchDB benefit significantly from the use of BERT instead of JSON?

    - by Victor Rodrigues
I appreciate a lot CouchDB attempt to use universal web formats in everything it does: RESTFUL HTTP methods in every interaction, JSON objects, javascript code to customize database and documents. CouchDB seems to scale pretty well, but the individual cost to make a request usually makes 'relational' people afraid of. Many small business applications should deal with only one machine and that's all. In this case the scalability talk doesn't say too much, we need more performance per request, or people will not use it. BERT (Binary ERlang Term http://bert-rpc.org/ ) has proven to be a faster and lighter format than JSON and it is native for Erlang, the language in which CouchDB is written. Could we benefit from that, using BERT documents instead of JSON ones? I'm not saying just for retrieving in views, but for everything CouchDB does, including syncing. And, as a consequence of it, use Erlang functions instead of javascript ones. This would modify some original CouchDB principles, because today it is very web oriented. Considering I imagine few people would make their database API public and usually its data is accessed by the users through an application, it would be a good deal to have the ability to configure CouchDB for working faster. HTTP+JSON calls could still be handled by CouchDB, considering an extra cost in these cases because of parsing.

    - by Victor Martins
I have an Organization model that has_many users through affiliations. And, in the form of the organization ( the standard edit ) I use semanting_form_for and semantic_fields_for to display the organization fields and affiliations fields. But I wish to create a separete form just to handle the affiliations of a specific organization. I was trying to go to the Organization controller and create a an edit_team and update_team methods then on the routes create those pages, but it's getting a mess and not working. am I on the right track?

  • What is wrong with this WHERE clause?

    - by Victor
Is there a reason why this query doesn't work? The following query will work if I just exclude the WHERE clause. I need to know what is wrong with it. I know the given values of $key exists in the table, so why doesn't this work? $q = "SELECT * WHERE t1.project=$key FROM project_technologies AS t1 JOIN languages AS t2 ON t1.language = t2.key"; Table's have the following fields: project_technologies - key - project - language languages - key - name

  • PHP bitwise left shifting 32 spaces problem and bad results with large numbers arithmetic operations

    - by Victor Stanciu
Hello, I have the following problems: First: I am trying to do a 32-spaces bitwise left shift on a large number, and for some reason the number is always returned as-is. For example: echo(516103988<<32); // echoes 516103988 Because shifting the bits to the left one space is the equivalent of multiplying by 2, i tried multiplying the number by 2^32, and it works, it returns 2216649749795176448. Second: I have to add 9379 to the number from the above point: printf('%0.0f', 2216649749795176448 + 9379); // prints 2216649749795185920 Should print: 2216649749795185827
