• Windows: Is there something to see and remotely control single(!) windows on a remote PC?

  Is there something where I can see and control single(!) windows of PC1 on PC2 remotely. Basically like it is possible with X-Windows. I am not talking / asking about A software which displays the whole desktop remotely (like VNC, Windows RDP). A X-windows server for windows, to connect to Linux. The answer here ( Windows Remote Desktop Connection for just a single window (or a single program) ) requires Windows Server 2008. I need to run this on two Windows 7 machines. Example: PC1 shows three windows, and I transfer, see, and control window 2 on PC2. -- Edit -- I have checked whether there is an X-Server for Windows <- Windows. • Can all notebooks record from the sound card?

  Is it possible that a modern notebook (say built in the last 5 years) contains a (onboard) sound card that it is not possible to record from? I've always assumed that this is a very basic capability, but since I can't get it to work, I would like to check that before I put any more effort into it. In case it matters, my notebook is an ASUS UL50VT, I'm trying with Sound Recorder and Audacity under Ubuntu, but I am, at this point, not asking for "Try that"-support or software recommendations.

• Why obfuscating a serial number of a device? What is the risk?

  In one of my xx.stackexchange questions I've got an answer, in which the user has obfuscated his disk's SN (serial number). Recently I have seen this in several photos as well, the SN was blurred out. I' am just curious, because I have never paid attention to this. What could be the potential risk in publishing a device's SN? I do see some sense when it comes to a MAC address, OK, this could be used for tracking. But a SN of a disk, iPad, whatsoever? Maybe there is an important reason for not publishing it, which I haven't seen so far.

• No External Sound

  I have ubuntu 9.10. Headphones appear to work fine. External speakers - nothing. There are so many sound preferences I have no idea what or which combination. Went to terminal did alsamixer seems to recognize my soundcard, though the driver is not listed in system - admin -hardware drivers, the only driver listed is my graphics card. I have tried several forums and it seems no one is interested in responding to sound issues. Here's hoping it is different here.

• Win Server 2008 R2 SP1 Repair Disk

  Is there nothing like "creating a repair disk" for Win Server 2008 R2 SP1. Or am I just missing it? Under Win7 I do just enter "Repair" and it finds "create a repair disk". Sorry - but I am not a professional Admin. Just using the server for my development environment. If there is no repair disk, is there something similar or something I should create in case I do have a system failure? Sure, a full backup is done, but anything else?

• git - recover deleted files from a prior commit

  I accidentally deleted some files in a prior commit and would like to recover them. How can I do this? I ran this and found exactly what I was looking for: git whatchanged --diff-filter=D At the time I made the commit, I should have committed the new/changed files only and ran a reset --hard then to recover the missing files. I have about 100 files that I need to restore. I don't want to do a straight revert as that will also undo the changes in that commit. Any ideas?

• Free space on SSD (over provisioning) per disk or per partition?

  It is recommended to keep some percentage of an SSD free for relocation ( Is free space required on a SSD for performance? ). However, is this rule meant per partition or per disk (whole SSD)? So, if I want to keep 20% free for performance reasons, is it acceptable if one partition is 95% filled, while another is almost empty and the overall empty disk space still is 20. Or does each partition has to fulfill the rule of 20% empty space?

• Why can't my FreeBSD 6.1 (vmware player client under Win7) do DNS in Bridged mode.

  I have a 64-bit FreeBSD 6.1 client, running under Windows 7 (64-bit) via VMWare player 3.0, with networking set to bridge mode. DHCP goes fine on boot... I get correct adress/gateway/nameserver info... I have good connectivity to the world in that I can ping any host I can name by IP addr, (including both of the nameservers in resolv.conf,) ...but I can't resolve any names. Inside the Windows box, the network interface has VMWare Bridge Protocol enabled, and the windows side of things has full connectivity. dig replies with: ;; connection timed out; no servers could be reached ...even if I use "dig @server_ip_addr" to point it at a pingable, working nameserver If I set VM networking to NAT mode, I can get outbound connectivity (with happy DNS) but, of course, can't do INBOUND connectivity, which I need. Thoughts?

  My app (which uses MySQL) is doing a large number of subsequent upserts. Right now my SQL looks like this: INSERT IGNORE INTO customer (name,customer_number,social_security_number,phone) VALUES ('VICTOR H KINDELL','123','123','123') INSERT IGNORE INTO customer (name,customer_number,social_security_number,phone) VALUES ('VICTOR H KINDELL','123','123','123') INSERT IGNORE INTO customer (name,customer_number,social_security_number,phone) VALUES ('VICTOR H KINDELL OR','123','123','123') INSERT IGNORE INTO customer (name,customer_number,social_security_number,phone) VALUES ('TRACY L WALTER PERSONAL REP FOR','123','123','123') INSERT IGNORE INTO customer (name,customer_number,social_security_number,phone) VALUES ('TRACY L WALTER PERSONAL REP FOR','123','123','123') So far I've found INSERT IGNORE to be the fastest way to achieve upserts. Selecting a record to see if it exists and then either updating it or inserting a new one is too slow. Even this is not as fast as I'd like because I need to do a separate statement for each record. Sometimes I'll have around 50,000 of these statements in a row. Is there a way to take care of all of these in just one statement, without deleting any existing records?

• Configuring Seam for Glassfish

  I'm still learning Grails and seem to have hit a stumbling block. Here are the 2 domain classes: class Photo { byte[] file static belongsTo = Profile } class Profile { String fullName Set photos static hasMany = [photos:Photo] } The relevant controller snippet: class PhotoController { ..... def viewImage = { def photo = Photo.get( params.id ) byte[] image = photo.file response.outputStream << image } ...... } Finally the GSP snippet: <img class="Photo" src="${createLink(controller:'photo', action:'viewImage', id:'profileInstance.photos.get(1).id')}" /> Now how do I access the photo so that it will be shown on the GSP? • TDD vs. Unit testing

  My company is fairly new to unit testing our code. I've been reading about TDD and unit testing for some time and am convinced of their value. I've attempted to convince our team that TDD is worth the effort of learning and changing our mindsets on how we program but it is a struggle. Which brings me to my question(s). There are many in the TDD community who are very religious about writing the test and then the code (and I'm with them), but for a team that is struggling with TDD does a compromise still bring added benefits? I can probably succeed in getting the team to write unit tests once the code is written (perhaps as a requirement for checking in code) and my assumption is that there is still value in writing those unit tests. What's the best way to bring a struggling team into TDD? And failing that is it still worth writing unit tests even if it is after the code is written? EDIT What I've taken away from this is that it is important for us to start unit testing, somewhere in the coding process. For those in the team who pickup the concept, start to move more towards TDD and testing first. Thanks for everyone's input. After we wrapped up the coding portion of the project, those writing unit tests after the code were surprised to see the TDD coders already done and with more solid code. • Business Objects - Containers or functional?

  Where I work, we've gone back and forth on this subject a number of times and are looking for a sanity check. Here's the question: Should Business Objects be data containers (more like DTOs) or should they also contain logic that can perform some functionality on that object. Example - Take a customer object, it probably contains some common properties (Name, Id, etc), should that customer object also include functions (Save, Calc, etc.)? One line of reasoning says separate the object from the functionality (single responsibility principal) and put the functionality in a Business Logic layer or object. The other line of reasoning says, no, if I have a customer object I just want to call Customer.Save and be done with it. Why do I need to know about how to save a customer if I'm consuming the object? Our last two projects have had the objects separated from the functionality, but the debate has been raised again on a new project. Which makes more sense? EDIT These results are very similar to our debates. One vote to one side or another completely changes the direction. Does anyone else want to add their 2 cents? EDIT Eventhough the answer sampling is small, it appears that the majority believe that functionality in a business object is acceptable as long as it is simple but persistence is best placed in a separate class/layer. We'll give this a try. Thanks for everyone's input...

• Using the Antenna and J2ME Polish preprocessors interchangeably and setting a variable value

  I have J2ME code, which I want to be able to compile using the J2ME Polish preprocessor or the wtkpreprocessor (antenna). They mostly use the same directives so it usually works, but ... When I want to insert an URL value in the Java code this gives a problem. In Antenna the code would look like this: //#ifdef my.url //# System.out.println("My Url"); //#expand String location = "%my.url%"; //#else System.out.println("Default"); String location = "http://www.some.default.url.com"; //#endif and in J2ME Polish it would look like this: //#ifdef my.url:defined //# System.out.println("My Url"); //#= String location = "${my.url}"; //#else System.out.println("Default"); String location = "http://www.some.default.url.com"; //#endif I want some way in which I can use the preprocessors interchangeably and still be able to set the url in the build.xml, any ideas?

• Sunspot_Rails Rake Aborted When Running Reindex

  I'm getting the following output after running rake sunspot:reindex. I'm a novice at Rails. I want to add sunspot_rails to my project to add search functionality (with the hope of deploying the project with Heroku). I'm using Rails 3. I followed the instructions here: https://github.com/outoftime/sunspot/blob/master/sunspot_rails/README.rdoc. My various other attempts to diagnose the problem included: installing sunspot in addition to sunspot_rails. • how to deploy wcf-service on iis 6.0

  I have IIS 6.0 on Windows Server 2003. I installed .Net 3.5 and 4 beta 2. "Normal" asp things are working (perfect). But when I try to navigate to my service (/myServer/MyService.svc) I got a 404. Page not found. To be exact, I got a 404 2 "Web service extension lockdown policy prevents this request." I used ServiceModelReg.exe /ia to make sure that the extension I known and I checked the configuration using: admin-Tools, iis, home-tab, configuration, executable-box, and there: extension: .svc, path: c:\windows\microsoft.net\framework\v4.0.210... verbs: all verbs So everything seems ok. But I still get a 404-2
