  • Does it make sense to test ui components seperately?

    I'm working on a webform that has about 15 user controls, separated by context (comments, locations, members/leaders, etc).   If each control can render individually (using real or test data), does it make sense to have a seperate "functional" test page to test them in isolation or is there a better way?

  • Reading All Users Session

      Introduction :            InProc Session is the widely used state management. Storing the session state Inproc is also the fastest method and is well-suited to small amounts of volatile data. Reading and writing current user Session is very easy. But some times we need to read all users session before taking a decision or sometimes we may need to check which users are currently active with the help of Session. But unfortunately there is no class in .Net Framework (i don't found myself) to read all user InProc Session Data. In this article i will use reflection to read all user Inproc Session.   Description :              This code will work equally in both MVC and webform, but for demonstration i will use a simple webform example. So let's create a simple Website and Add two aspx pages, Default.aspx and Default2.aspx. In Default.aspx just add a link to navigate to Default2.aspx and in Default.aspx.cs just add a Session. In this code, first of all i got CacheInternal Static Property of HttpRuntime class and then with the help of this object i got _entries private member which is of type ICollection. Then simply enumerate this dictionary and only take object of type System.Web.SessionState.InProcSessionState and finaly got SessionStateItemCollection for each user.Summary :        In this article, I shows you how you can get all current user Sessions. However one thing you will find when executing this code is that it will not show the current user Session which is set in the current request context because Session will be saved after all the Page Events.

  • Building Interactive User Interfaces with Microsoft ASP.NET AJAX: Refreshing An UpdatePanel With Jav

    The ASP.NET AJAX UpdatePanel provides a quick and easy way to implement a snappier, AJAX-based user interface in an ASP.NET WebForm. In a nutshell, UpdatePanels allow page developers to refresh selected parts of the page (instead of refreshing the entire page). Typically, an UpdatePanel contains user interface elements that would normally trigger a full page postback - controls like Buttons or DropDownLists that have their AutoPostBack property set to True. Such controls, when placed inside an UpdatePanel, cause a partial page postback to occur. On a partial page postback only the contents of the UpdatePanel are refreshed, avoiding the "flash" of having the entire page reloaded. (For a more in-depth look at the UpdatePanel control, refer back to the Using the UpdatePanel installment in this article series.) Triggering a partial page postback refreshes the contents within an UpdatePanel, but what if you want to refresh an UpdatePanel's contents via JavaScript? Ideally, the UpdatePanel would have a client-side function named something like Refresh that could be called from script to perform a partial page postback and refresh the UpdatePanel. Unfortunately, no such function exists. Instead, you have to write script that triggers a partial page postback for the UpdatePanel you want to refresh.   • Windows Azure Evolution - Web Sites (aka Antares) Part 1

    This is the 3rd post of my Windows Azure Evolution series, focus on the new features and enhancement which was alone with the Windows Azure Platform Upgrade June 2012, announced at the MEET Windows Azure event on 7th June. In the first post I introduced the new preview developer portal and how to works for the existing features such as cloud services, storages and SQL databases. In the second one I talked about the Windows Azure .NET SDK 1.7 on the latest Visual Studio 2012 RC on Windows 8. From this one I will begin to introduce some new features. Now let’s have a look on the first one of them, Windows Azure Web Sites.   Overview Windows Azure Web Sites (WAWS), as known as Antares, was a new feature still in preview stage in this upgrade. It allows people to quickly and easily deploy websites to a highly scalable cloud environment, uses the languages and open source apps of the choice then deploy such as FTP, Git and TFS. It also can be integrated with Windows Azure services like SQL Database, Caching, CDN and Storage easily. After read its introduction we may have a question: since we can deploy a website from both cloud service web role and web site, what’s the different between them? So, let’s have a quick compare.   CLOUD SERVICE WEB SITE OS Windows Server Windows Server Virtualization Windows Azure Virtual Machine Windows Azure Virtual Machine Host IIS IIS Platform ASP.NET WebForm, ASP.NET MVC, WCF ASP.NET WebForm, ASP.NET MVC, PHP Language C#, VB.NET C#, VB.NET, PHP Database SQL Database SQL Database, MySQL Architecture Multi layered, background worker, message queuing, etc.. Simple website with backend database. VS Project Windows Azure Cloud Service ASP.NET Web Form, ASP.NET MVC, etc.. Out-of-box Gallery (none) Drupal, DotNetNuke, WordPress, etc.. Deployment Package upload, Visual Studio publish FTP, Git, TFS, WebMatrix Compute Mode Dedicate VM Shared Across VMs, Dedicate VM Scale Scale up, scale out Scale up, scale out As you can see, there are many difference between the cloud service and web site, but the main point is that, the cloud service focus on those complex architecture web application. For example, if you want to build a website with frontend layer, middle business layer and data access layer, with some background worker process connected through the message queue, then you should better use cloud service, since it provides full control of your code and application. But if you just want to build a personal blog or a  business portal, then you can use the web site. Since the web site have many galleries, you can create them even without any coding and configuration. David Pallmann have an awesome figure explains the benefits between the could service, web site and virtual machine.   Create a Personal Blog in Web Site from Gallery As I mentioned above, one of the big feature in WAWS is to build a website from an existing gallery, which means we don’t need to coding and configure. What we need to do is open the windows azure developer portal and click the NEW button, select WEB SITE and FROM GALLERY. In the popping up windows there are many websites we can choose to use. For example, for personal blog there are Orchard CMS, WordPress; for CMS there are DotNetNuke, Drupal 7, mojoPortal. Let’s select WordPress and click the next button. The next step is to configure the web site. We will need to specify the DNS name and select the subscription and region. Since the WordPress uses MySQL as its backend database, we also need to create a MySQL database as well. Windows Azure Web Sites utilize ClearDB to host the MySQL databases. You cannot create a MySQL database directly from SQL Databases section. Finally, since we selected to create a new MySQL database we need to specify the database name and region in the last step. Also we need to accept the ClearDB’s terms as well. Then windows azure platform will download the WordPress codes and deploy the MySQL database and website. Then it will be ready to use. Select the website and click the BROWSE button, the WordPress administration page will be shown. After configured the WordPress here is my personal web blog on the cloud. It took me no more than 10 minutes to establish without any coding.   Monitor, Configure, Scale and Linked Resources Let’s click into the website I had just created in the portal and have a look on what we can do. In the website details page where are five sections. - Dashboard The overall information about this website, such as the basic usage status, public URL, compute mode, FTP address, subscription and links that we can specify the deployment credentials, TFS and Git publish setting, etc.. - Monitor Some status information such as the CPU usage, memory usage etc., errors, etc.. We can add more metrics by clicking the ADD METRICS button and the bottom as well. - Configure Here we can set the configurations of our website such as the .NET and PHP runtime version, diagnostics settings, application settings and the IIS default documents. - Scale This is something interesting. In WAWS there are two compute mode or called web site mode. One is “shared”, which means our website will be shared with other web sites in a group of windows azure virtual machines. Each web site have its own process (w3wp.exe) with some sandbox technology to isolate from others. When we need to scaling-out our web site in shared mode, we actually increased the working process count. Hence in shared mode we cannot specify the virtual machine size since they are shared across all web sites. This is a little bit different than the scaling mode of the cloud service (hosted service web role and worker role). The other mode called “dedicate”, which means our web site will use the whole windows azure virtual machine. This is the same hosting behavior as cloud service web role. In web role it will be deployed on the virtual machines we specified and all of them are only used by us. In web sites dedicate mode, it’s the same. In this mode when we scaling-out our web site we will use more virtual machines, and each of them will only host our own website. And we can specify the virtual machine size in this mode. In the developer portal we can select which mode we are using from the scale section. In shared mode we can only specify the instance count, but in dedicate mode we can specify the instance size as well as the instance count. - Linked Resource The MySQL database created alone with the creation of our WordPress web site is a linked resource. We can add more linked resources in this section.   Pricing For the web site itself, since this feature is in preview period if you are using shared mode, then you will get free up to 10 web sites. But if you are using dedicate mode, the price would be the virtual machines you are using. For example, if you are using dedicate and configured two middle size virtual machines then you will pay $230.40 per month. If there is SQL Database linked to your web site then they will be charged separately based on the Pay-As-You-Go price. For example a 1GB web edition database costs $9.99 per month. And the bandwidth will be charged as well. For example 10GB outbound data transfer costs $1.20 per month. For more information about the pricing please have a look at the windows azure pricing page.   Summary Windows Azure Web Sites gives us easier and quicker way to create, develop and deploy website to window azure platform. Comparing with the cloud service web role, the WAWS have many out-of-box gallery we can use directly. So if you just want to build a blog, CMS or business portal you don’t need to learn ASP.NET, you don’t need to learn how to configure DotNetNuke, you don’t need to learn how to prepare PHP and MySQL. By using WAWS gallery you can establish a website within 10 minutes without any lines of code. But in some cases we do need to code by ourselves. We may need to tweak the layout of our pages, or we may have a traditional ASP.NET or PHP web application which needed to migrated to the cloud. Besides the gallery WAWS also provides many features to download, upload code. It also provides the feature to integrate with some version control services such as TFS and Git. And it also provides the deploy approaches through FTP and Web Deploy.   • Step by Step screencasts to do Behavior Driven Development on WCF and UI using xUnit

    I am trying to encourage my team to get into Behavior Driven Development (BDD). So, I made two quick video tutorials to show how BDD can be done from early requirement collection stage to late integration tests. It explains breaking user stories into behaviors, and then developers and test engineers taking the behavior specs and writing a WCF service and unit test for it, in parallel, and then eventually integrating the WCF service and doing the integration tests. It introduces how mocking is done using the Moq library. Moreover, it shows a way how you can write test once and do both unit and integration tests at the flip of a config setting. Watch the screencast here: Doing BDD with xUnit, Subspec and on a WCF Service  Warning: you might hear some noise in the audio in some places. Something wrong with audio bit rate. I suggest you let the video download for a while and then play it. If you still get noise, go back couple of seconds earlier and then resume play. It eliminates the noise.  The next video tutorial is about doing BDD to do automated UI tests. It shows how test engineers can take behaviors and then write tests that tests a prototype UI in isolation (just like Service Contract) in order to ensure the prototype conforms to the expected behaviors, while developers can write the real code and build the real product in parallel. When the real stuff is done, the same test can test the real stuff and ensure the agreed behaviors are satisfied. I have used WatiN to automate UI and test UI for expected behaviors.   • jQuery + Perl CGI to vb.net transition

    I've been developing oracle database-heavy "web applications" forever by building my html by hand, adding some jquery to handle ajax requests (html inserts for forms processing etc), and always did my server side stuff in perl cgi. I really love how easy it is to read some form input, execute some select statements through dbi (SO EASY), and generate HTML to be inserted by the jquery request. That's a web application to me. However, my new boss builds everything in visual studio 2010, vb.net, usually webforms. So, for work reasons, I now need to start developing in vb.net so it can be collectively maintained, and I'm just seeking advice on where to start learning/how to approach this. I know I could at least learn ASP.net and VB.net, and create a webform, have it read parameters, return HTML, etc. which would allow me to use my previously written HTML and client-side scripts (jQuery). Although- since we're moving heavily to mobile applications I really need to reduce client-side processing load. Is there any advantage to my boss' method? Thanks a ton.

  • Ninject/DI: How to correctly pass initialisation data to injected type at runtime

    I have the following two classes: public class StoreService : IStoreService { private IEmailService _emailService; public StoreService(IEmailService emailService) { _emailService = emailService; } } public class EmailService : IEmailService { } Using Ninject I can set up bindings no problem to get it to inject a concrete implementation of IEmailService into the StoreService constructor. StoreService is actually injected into the code behind of an ASP.NET WebForm as so: [Ninject.Inject] public IStoreService StoreService { get; set; } But now I need to change EmailService to accept an object that contains SMTP related settings (that are pulled from the ApplicationSettings of the Web.config). So I changed EmailService to now look like this: public class EmailService : IEmailService { private SMTPSettings _smtpSettings; public void SetSMTPSettings(SMTPSettings smtpSettings) { _smtpSettings = smtpSettings; } } Setting SMTPSettings in this way also requires it to be passed into StoreService (via another public method). This has to be done in the Page_Load method in the WebForms code behind (I only have access to the Settings class in the UI layer). With manual/poor mans DI I could pass SMTPSettings directly into the constructor of EmailService and then inject EmailService into the StoreService constructor. With Ninject I don't have access to the instances of injected types outside of the objects they are injected to, so I have to set their data AFTER Ninject has already injected them via a separate public setter method. This to me seems wrong. How should I really be solving this scenario?

  • Configuring Cruise Control Net with sourcesafe - Unable to load array item 'executable'

    Hi all, I'm trying to create a continuous integration environment. To do so, I've used a guide that can be found at http://www.15seconds.com/issue/040621.htm. In this step by step, the goal is to create a CI with CCNet, NAnt, NUni, NDoc, FxCop and source safe. I've been able to create my build by using the command prompt (despite the the different versions issues). The problem has come with the configuration of ccnet.config I've made some changes because of the new versions, but I'm still getting errors when starting the CCNet server. Can anyone help me to fix this issue or point where to find a guide with this scenario? The error that I'm getting: Unable to instantiate CruiseControl projects from configuration document. Configuration document is likely missing Xml nodes required for properly populating CruiseControl configuration.   • MVC using ODP.NET getting ORA-01840

    I am writing a simple MVC Application using ODP.NET. I am trying to call a Pl/Sql proc that inserts a record. ORA-01840 conn.Close(); } Just to verify that the flow of the program is working, I tried removing the date parm "pInsertedOn" from the pl/sql and from the parm list above, and everything worked fine. I know I am going off of the rails with the date. Can someone tell me how to pass a date to Oracle from an MVC WebForm? Is there some sort of type cast needed? I would really appreciate an example too. Thanks so much! ps, I did try changing the parm type to Varchar2 in the Pl/Sql and doing some conversions myself in the Pl/Sql, the automatic MVC binder was getting in my way, forcing the property of paramInsertedOn.OracleType to DateTime. I tried forcing it to Varchar2, but no luck there either...

  • MVC 1.0 FormCollection wiped out by running SSRS report

    I have an MVC 1.0 app with a form that works just fine. The app also launches an SSRS using the URL ReportServer interface (**Not the Webform ReportViewer Control!). This also works just fine. But if I export the generated SSRS report (say to .pdf), and then return to the MVC application, no form will work. By "not work" I mean that on the Post action, the form collection is not returned. I'm completely lost as to what could be causing this behavior. Any ideas? Thanks in advance.

    I am currently working with an IPhone API which consist of about 40 pages of aspx along with their respective aspx.vb pages. They are all partial classes because the API continues to add other phone platforms to it. Currently I have them residing just in a folder. /API/0.1 and /API/1.0 ... How would I call the functions from those IPhone API classes without having to put them in the App_code? example: I have a partial class SetTextBroadcast with a function like this Function BroadcastMessage(ByVal Brodcast_recipient() As net.pmgateway.Recipient, ByVal str_Message As String) As net.pmgateway.Reply 'code here End Function How do i use that function in a webform? or do I need to put it in App_Code? something like this is what i'm looking for.   • Can't get FCKEditor to work in a virtual directory.

    I have a WebForm that contains the following definition for the FCKeditor: <FCKeditorV2:FCKeditor ID="txtBody" runat="server" BasePath="/fckeditor/" Height="480px" ToolbarSet="WebCal1" > </FCKeditorV2:FCKeditor> This works fine in my VS2008-based web application. However, when I deploy it to a Virtual Directory in IIS, it looks for the FCKEditor files (e.g. javascript, stylesheets, etc...) in the /fckeditor folder, not in the /MyVirtualDir/fkceditor. I've tried changing the BasePath to ~/fckeditor/, but then it won't work on my dev machine. What is the right way to go, so that the FCKEditor maps onto the right directory. In my project the fckeditor directory is right off the root.

    Can someone explain to me how you would use jeditable with an ASP.NET web form (and C# codebehind). I've got a bit of experience with web forms but not very complicated stuff, and haven't used much jquery before, and this is just puzzling me. I understand how to put it in and attach it to the element you want to be editable, it's what jeditable does when you submit the text field that I don't get. How do you handle that in the webform in order to save the changed text? Hope someone understands my issue... Cheers!

  • Release another user's lock obtained with sp_getapplock on SQL Server

    We have a system that uses sp_getapplock to create an exclusive mutex any time someone opens an order in the GUI. This is used to prevent multiple people from making changes to an order simultaneously. Sometimes people will open an order and go home, leaving it open. This effectively blocks anyone from being able to make changes to the order. I then get emails, calls and end up doing a kill <spid> in enterprise manager. Obviously I've gotten sick of this and want to make a quick self-service webform. The main problem I've run into is that kill requires sysadmin privileges, which I do not want to give to the user that the our website runs as. I have tried sp_releaseapplock but this doesn't let you release another user's lock (even when calling it as a sysadmin). So, finally my question; does anyone know of an alternative method to release a lock that was obtained by another user using sp_getapplock?

    hello, i have an ASP webform with a JQuery Thickbox, i have an image that opens the thickbox when user click. once open the thickbox it shows me a grid with several rows and a button to select one and after the user select the record it returns to the main page the recordselected and cause a __doPostBack() BUT! sometimes in IE6 it stay loading the postback and never ends i have to refresh the page and when it refresh it shows everything fine. but i dont want the postback stay loading AND it does not happend always. i have to call a __doPostBack because i need to find info related to the selected record. thanks.

    I have a weird problem in my vb.net web application sometimes. webmail webform with html editor, sometimes very rare users type for example more than 200 or 400 characters and send the message to other user. But the reciever only recieves 5 or 7 characters. 2 or 3 words of the message. I don know what is going on. I checked the code, no bugs everything is working fine.All the users are on Microsoft XPsp2 platform. Any help will be appreciated. Is this sufficient , or shall I provide any more input regarding the problem...?? OK I got it... the problem is when I type characters in HtmlEditor it keeps on continuing, i mean it should go to the end and automatically comes to the second line....but it is going on and on.how can I stop this.

    I am using a WebBrowser-Control to fill in a webform and then click at a button, this currently results in a standard Download File Dialog (you get these if you download a file using internet explorer), but instead, I have to catch this file and save it automatically with a by me defined name to a specific folder. I am trying to code a little application in vb.net which download the Export-file from my wordpress-blog, and I want to do this completely without user-interaction. Currently everything works, except the downloading of the file. I tried to catch it with the event System.Windows.Controls.WebBrowser.Navigating(ByVal Object, ByVal System.Windows.Navigation.NavigatingCancelEventArgs) but I don't see where to download the file from :( I hope you guys can help me.

    Looking at some of the changes coming to WebForms in ASP.NET 4.0 I can see many improvements that give developers even more control over the output. Some of these improvement have been a long time coming, and for some time it seemed that it wasn't even possible. It made me wonder if the current model with the single form element that runs on the server is really the only possible way. Why couldn't the ASPNET WebForm architecture work with multiple forms that all run on the server? Imagine if you could architect this change. How would it impact the way we write codebehind today? Would it introduce extra complexity? Would it change the way event handlers work, or validation, or ASP.NET Ajax with the ScriptManager and UpdatePanel controls?

    Hello, i own a web server running windows (WAMP). I want to know the best way to implement a Rest API (a very simple one) in order to let a user do something. Diagram flow: I have programming skills, in fact, i developed some time ago a web server in VB6 who process the querys and when it find the command (http:/serverIP/webform.php?cmd=run&item=any) it do something, but know i really want to develop a solution using the WAMP server. Some people consider the solution of executing a exe when a command is detected a bad solution for security issues, but this specific proyect i have is for the use of only some people (trusted people) who dont have intentions of hacking the server.     I have some textboxes on a webform that have ids like this: txtFinalDeadline_1 txtFinalDeadline_2 txtFinalDeadline_3 txtFinalDeadline_4 In my jQuery how do I find all of those in order to assign a value to them. Before I had the underscore and they were all named txtFinalDeadline I could do this and it worked. $(this).find("#txtFinalDeadline").val(formatDate); However, that was when they were all named the same thing. Now I have the _x after the name and I'm not sure how to go about assigning that same value as before to them. Thanks.

  • SelectedValue of DropDownList is not the one I selected when Enabled=false

    Hiya, I have a few DropDownLists on a webform each pointing to a SqlDataSource. Some of these datasources use one of these DropDownLists for a select parameter, filtering the list to specific categories. For certain users two of these DropDownLists are to be automatically set and disabled. When I submit the form with the drop downs enabled it works fine but when they are disabled the SelectedValue of the DropDownList is being reset to the first one in the list.
