  • Commerce, Anyway You Want It

    - by David Dorf
I believe our industry is finally starting to realize the importance of letting consumers determine how, when, and where to interact with retailers.  Over the last few months I've seen several articles discussing the importance of removing the barriers between existing channels. Paula Rosenblum of RSR first brought the term omni-channel to my attention back in September. She stated, "omni-channel retail isn’t the merging of channels – rather, it’s the use of all possible channels (present and future) to enhance the customer experience in a profitable way." I added to her thoughts in this blog posting in which I said, "For retailers to provide an omni-channel experience, there needs to be one logical representation of products, prices, promotions, and customers across all channels. The only thing that varies is the presentation of the content based on the delivery mechanism (e.g. shelf labels, mobile phone, web site, print, etc.) and often these mechanisms can be combined in various ways." More recently Brian Walker of Gartner suggested we stop using the term multi-channel and begin thinking more about consumer touch-points. "It is time for organizations to leave their channel-oriented ways behind, and enter the era of agile commerce--optimizing their people, processes and technology to serve today's empowered, ever-connected customers across this rapidly evolving set of customer touch points." Now Jason Goldberg, better known as RetailGeek, says we should start breaking down the channel silos by re-casting the VP of E-Commerce as the VP of Digital Marketing, and change his/her focus to driving sales across all channels using digital media. This logic is based on the fact that consumers switch between channels, or touch-points as Brian prefers, as part of their larger buying process. Today's smart consumer leverages the Web, mobile, and stores to provide the best shopping experience, so retailers need to make this easier. Regardless of what we call it, the key take-away is that "multi-channel" is not only an antiquated term but also an idea who's time has passed.  Today, retailers must look at e-commerce, m-commerce, f-commerce, catalogs, and traditional store sales collectively and through the consumers' eyes.  The goal is not to drive sales through each channel but rather to just drive sales -- using whatever method the customer prefers.  There really should be just one cart.

  • How do I tell Websphere 7 about a front end load balancer so that re-directs are handled correctly?

    - by TiGz
On WebLogic 11G I can use the console to set the FrontendHost and FrondendPort on a server or on a cluster so that re-directs are handled correctly and end up resolving to the front end load balancer instead of the local host. The MBeans associated with this on WebLogic are, for example: MBean Name com.bea:Name=AdminServer,Type=WebServer,Server=AdminServer Attribute Name FrontendHost Description The name of the host to which all redirected URLs will be sent. If specified, WebLogic Server will use this value rather than the one in the HOST header. Sets the HTTP frontendHost Provides a method to ensure that the webapp will always have the correct HOST information, even when the request is coming through a firewall or a proxy. If this parameter is configured, the HOST header will be ignored and the information in this parameter will be used in its place. Type java.lang.String Readable / Writable RW How is the same thing achieved under Websphere 7? Follow up info: So I have 2 use cases actually. One is that I have a web app running under WebSphere on host A on port 9002 and a LB running on host B at port 80, when I visit the home page of the app via the LB on http://hostb/app the app redirects my browser to http://hostb:9002/app and it 404's I think this is WebSphere's fault but I guess it could be the app's fault? The second is that the web app in question needs to send emails containing URls that the customer can click on to get back into the web app - obviously this needs to be via the LB. On WebLogic the app uses MBeans to derive the LB url and I was hoping to use a similar mechanism on WebSphere.

  • WebSphere hung threads, how can I track then down?

    - by Puzzled
We have an application running on WebSphere (unfortunately it is 6.1 which is no longer supported, it has not yet been migrated in production to a later version) which becomes entirely unresponsive because of hung threads. As far as I can tell we entirely exhaust one of the thread pools. I have activated hung thread detection and I get a core/thread dump when hung threads are detected. The server can run for several days without problems but has crashed twice this week. When load the core/thread dump in "IBM Thread and Monitor Dump Analyzer for Java", it tells me that there are a certain number of hung threads (this time it was 2, last time 11) and multiple (usually around 40) threads "waiting on condition" and some running threads. I believe one of the thread pool has around that size (50). Now what I see in there are threads waiting for locks, having locks or in wait. Most of them show a stack track which always ends like this: at java/lang/Object.wait(Native Method) at java/lang/Object.wait(Object.java:231) Now, how can I track this down to either a server configuration problem, application issue, WebSphere problem or something else? How is this supposed to help me track down the problem when almost everything in there refers to IBM code? I cannot ask IBM's help as 6.1 is now an unsupported version of WebSphere and while work has been done to make it work under WebSphere 7 we are not yet ready to switch to it in Production yet.

  • Connecting to a Websphere MQ in Java with SSL/Keystore

    - by javaExpert
    I'd like to connect to a Websphere 6.0 MQ via Java. I have already working code for a "normal" queue, but now I need to access a new queue which is SSL encrypted (keystore). I have been sent a file called something.jks, which I assume is a certificate I need to store somewhere. I have been searching the net, but I can't find the right information. This is the code I use for the "normal" queue. I assume I need to set some property, but not sure which one. MQQueueConnectionFactory connectionFactory = new MQQueueConnectionFactory(); connectionFactory.setChannel(channel_); connectionFactory.setHostName(hostname_); connectionFactory.setPort(port_); connectionFactory.setQueueManager(queueManager_); connectionFactory.setTransportType(1); connectionFactory.setSSsetSSLCertStores(arg0) Connection connection = connectionFactory.createConnection(); connection.setExceptionListener(this); session_ = connection.createSession(DEFAULT_TRANSACTED, DEFAULT_ACKMODE); connection.start(); javax.jms.Queue fQueue = session_.createQueue(queue_); consumer = session_.createConsumer(fQueue);

  • jvm version for Websphere 6.1.0.23on Solaris

    - by dr jerry
Hi I'm at big financial institute and we've an application running on Websphere 6.1. on Solaris. Due to MQ Connectivity we had to install fixpack 6.1.0.23. Unfortunately this broke an ejb (1.1) which is still there as legacy (Test missed it). [3/23/10 11:33:18:703 CET] 00000055 EJBContainerI E WSVR0068E: Attempt to start EnterpriseBean EventRisk_1.0.0#EventRiskEJB.jar#PolicyDataManager failed with exception: java.lang.NoSuchMethodError: com.ibm.ejs.csi.ResRefListImpl.(Lorg/eclipse/jst/j2ee/ejb/EnterpriseBean;Lcom/ibm/ejs/models/base/bindings/ejbbnd/EnterpriseBeanBinding;Lcom/ibm/ejs/models/base/extensions/ejbext/EnterpriseBeanExtension;)V at com.ibm.ws.metadata.ejb.EJBMDOrchestrator.finishBMDInit(EJBMDOrchestrator.java:1364) at com.ibm.ws.runtime.component.EJBContainerImpl.finishDeferredBeanMetaData(EJBContainerImpl.java:4829) at com.ibm.ws.runtime.component.EJBContainerImpl$3.run(EJBContainerImpl.java:4631) at java.security.AccessController.doPrivileged(Native Method) at com.ibm.ws.security.util.AccessController.doPrivileged(AccessController.java:125) at com.ibm.ws.runtime.component.EJBContainerImpl.initializeDeferredEJB(EJBContainerImpl.java:4627) at com.ibm.ejs.container.HomeOfHomes.getHome(HomeOfHomes.java:390) at com.ibm.ejs.container.HomeOfHomes.internalCreateWrapper(HomeOfHomes.java:938) at com.ibm.ejs.container.EJSContainer.createWrapper(EJSContainer.java:4783) at com.ibm.ejs.container.WrapperManager.faultOnKey(WrapperManager.java:545) at com.ibm.ejs.util.cache.Cache.findAndFault(Cache.java:498) at com.ibm.ejs.container.WrapperManager.keyToObject(WrapperManager.java:489) We cannot reproduce the issue on our desktop boxes (it all works fine there) and we do not have direct access to our the Solaris machines (dependent on the deployment department) we do suspect a discrepancy on the jvm but we're not sure. My question is two fold: can you confirm IBM's statement that fixpack 6.1.0.23 for solaris indeed runs on jvm 1.5.0_17b04 our installation tells us ./java -version java version "1.5.0_13" But deploy department is not eager to investigate. Do you see some other solution, apart from hiring big blue's con$ultancy? kind regards, Jeroen.

  • http_access.log on WebSphere 6.1.0.29

    - by DavidG
I am running WebSphere 6.1.0.29 and I need to track the requests being made to an Enterprise Application. Previously I did this by routing the requests through a proxy server, but I need to repeat the exercise and I figure there must be a simpler way. Does anyone know how to enable HTTP access logging? I have been through the console an thought I had enabled http_access.log and http_error.log via: Application servers server1 HTTP error and NCSA access logging (where 'server1' is the application server) I've enabled the service at startup, and ticked the boxes to enable access logging and error logging - however... nothing has happened. I have restarted the server, restarted the Enterprise apps and even did a "find . -name" for the log files - but they don't seem to be anywhere on the system. I saw on a JavaRanch thread someone suggested writing a custom filter for requests in an application, but this seems like wild overkill - plus I am doing the logs to test a pre-built binary, so I don't want to mess with the code. Anyone have any ideas/suggestions? Help! :-)

  • Java client listening to WebSphere MQ Server?

    - by user595234
I need to write a Java client listening to WebSphere MQ Server. Message is put into a queue in the server. I developed this code, but am not sure it is correct or not. If correct, then how can I test it? This is a standalone Java project, no application server support. Which jars I should put into classpath? I have the MQ settings, where I should put into my codes? • E-commerce + CMS: 2 sites or one?

    - by Guandalino
Ok, let's say that a customer already has a CMS managed web site but now wants to sell goods online using an E-commerce platform (Magento in this case). My question is, does it make any difference between choosing to have just one site running both CMS and E-commerce (www.mycompany.com, or to have one site for the CMS (www.mycompany.com) and another (www.mycompany-shop.com) for E-commerce? I'd like to know the pros and cons of these approaches, so that I can advice the customer for the best. --EDIT I forgot to say that I'd prefer to have 2 separated web sites. This way I shouldn't have to learn how to integrate them together (one in Python, the other in PHP).

  • Does e-commerce platform matter for branding

    - by c s h
The place I work is now looking into developing a new e-commerce site on the Magento platform. Magento will fill all of our needs. I was just wondering if it is in anyway unprofessional doing it this way (Impression is something we are really worried about), will people who visit the site look at our business different knowing we used Magento or any other e-commerce platform. There are ways to find out. I use Chrome Sniffer to find out what platforms are used to develop each site, there are other tools available for different browsers. Bottom-line: Will an e-commerce platform affect the trust in my brand?

  • E-Commerce Website

    - by haargott
I am planning to create an e-commerce website for users to buy products and services. In this website I want users to register and also participate in something like a browser game, where every user may receive some questions which they have to answer. For each question they successfully answered, they receive points and the number of collected points will decide on which rank they are. Edit 2 Currently I am considering using only HTML, CSS, JavaScript, PHP, SQL to design this e-commerce website. Together with this I was thinking about learning jQuery as it may help me, but I am not sure if I should code everything specifically by myself or just use the library to make it faster. 1) Could you tell me if those languages are sufficient enough for creating such a website described? 2) Could you tell me what kind of free software tools and frameworks are most appropriate to use when creating this e-commerce website?

  • EntityManager injection works in JBoss 7.1.1 but not WebSphere 7

    - by BikerJared
I've built an EJB that will manage my database access. I'm building a web app around it that uses Struts 2. The problem I'm having is when I deploy the ear, the EntityManager doesn't get injected into my service class (and winds up null and results in NullPointerExceptions). The weird thing is, it works on JBoss 7.1.1 but not on WebSphere 7. You'll notice that Struts doesn't inject the EJB, so I've got some intercepter code that does that. My current working theory right now is that the WS7 container can't inject the EntityManager because of Struts for some unknown reason. My next step is to try Spring next, but I'd really like to get this to work if possible. I've spent a few days searching and trying various things and haven't had any luck. I figured I'd give this a shot. Let me know if I can provide additional information. <?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8"?> <persistence xmlns="http://java.sun.com/xml/ns/persistence" • Advice on e-commerce logging strategy

    - by yalestar
I recently inherited an e-commerce app (Java/Struts) that I'm porting to Rails. The thing is, we frequently have to do forensics on orders by poring through the log files, and with the old app's logs (log4j wall of text) it's pretty hard to make sense of the individual orders when several people are placing orders simultaneously. So I'm soliciting advice on a good strategy for logging of these orders, like maybe logging each individual order to its own MongoDB collection based on unique cart ID? Or maybe group them by IP address? Something different entirely? Essentially, what is the best approach for logging of an online store so that it's easy to backtrace each user's interaction with the site?

  • e-commerce product data/metadata schemas

    - by Shreko
Trying to figure out how is product data/metadata schema designed. For example, how does an e-commerce site enter a product spec. Does it copy and paste from mfg spec sheet, enters it in their own fields or something else? Here is an example, looking at the D3000 Nikon DSLR Manufacturer: http://nikon.ca/en/Product.aspx?m=17300&disp=Specs futureshop.ca: www.futureshop.ca/en-CA/product/nikon-nikon-d3000-10-2mp-dslr-camera-with-18-55mm-lens-kit-d3000/10128435.aspx?path=865c2348a1542e848982c9dbd9253483en02 memoryexpress.com: www.memoryexpress.com/Products/PID-MX25539%28ME%29.aspx They are all slightly different in order or in parent/child field? What's storage is used for this type of info rdbms or xml?

  • Apache Commons Net FTPClient retrievefile method issue with Sterling Commerce Connect

    - by ravi2082
Hi All, We have been using apache commons net FTP classes to connect using a proxy to a Sterling commerce FTP gateway located outside our network to pull files. We do not list the files since we know the name of the file to be pulled so we pull it directly using the below method. boolean isTransferred = ftp.retrieveFile(remoteFileName, outputFile); It was working since 3 years and we have been facing issues since last 2 weeks. The error occurs at above line and is org.apache.commons.net.ftp.FTPConnectionClosedException: FTP response 421 received. Server closed connection. org.apache.commons.net.ftp.FTP.__getReply(FTP.java:347) org.apache.commons.net.ftp.FTP.sendCommand(FTP.java:450) org.apache.commons.net.ftp.FTP.sendCommand(FTP.java:478) org.apache.commons.net.ftp.FTPClient.openDataConnection(FTPClient.java:476) org.apache.commons.net.ftp.FTPClient.retrieveFile(FTPClient.java:1228) We are facing these issues intermittently since last 2 weeks and not sure what could be the root cause of it. Nothing has changed on the either side. Any ideas what could be the issue? Thanks, Ravi

  • E-Commerce Security: Only Credit Card Fields Encrypted?!

    - by bizarreunprofessionalanddangerous
I'd like your opinions on how a major bricks-and-mortar company is running the security for its shopping Web site. After a recent update, when you are logged into your shopping account, the session is now not secured. No 'https', no browser 'lock'. All the personal contact info, shopping history -- and if I'm not mistaken submit and change password -- are being sent unencrypted. There is a small frame around the credit card fields that is https. There's a little notice: "Our website is secure. Our website uses frames and because of this the secure icon will not appear in your browser" On top of this the most prominent login fields for the site are broken, and haven't gotten fixed for a week or longer (giving the distinct impression they have no clue what's going on and can't be trusted with anything). Now is it just me -- or is this simply incomprehensible for a billion dollar company, significant shopping site, in the year 2010. No lock. "We use frames" (maybe they forget "Best viewed in IE4"). Customers complaining, as you can see from their FAQ "explaining" why you aren't seeing https. I'm getting nowhere trying to convince customer service that they REALLY need to do something about this, and am about to head for the CEO. But I just want to make sure this is as BIZARRE and unprofessional and dangerous a situation as I think it is. (I'm trying to visualize what their Web technical team consists of. I'm getting A) some customer service reps who were given a 3 hour training course on Web site maintenance, B) a 14 year old boy in his bedroom masquerading as a major technical services company, C) a guy in a hut in a jungle with an e-commerce book from 1996.)

  • websphere-mq security changes in 7.0 + - Is it possible to secure MQ objects without using security

    - by avinash
We are using security exits in WebsphereMQ 6.0 to provide security in java clients connecting to MQ and MQ - MQ connectivity. We use security exits to provide secure way to connect to Queue managers , Queue , channel. IS there any change in security mechanism in latest version so that we can completely avoid using security exits ? This is what our requirement/goal in MQ security Queuemanagers should be only accessible with providing proper username and password (I know this is not possible in 6.0 without security exits ) A legal user after authenticating queuemanager connection should be able to access only his queue / channel. Thanks

  • Remote EJB lookup issue with WebSphere 6.1

    - by marc dauncey
I've seen this question asked before, but I've tried various solutions proposed, to no avail. Essentially, I have two EJB enterprise applications, that need to communicate with one another. The first is a web application, the second is a search server - they are located on different development servers, not in the same node, cell, or JVM, although they are on the same physical box. I'm doing the JNDI lookup via IIOP, and the URL I am using is as follows: iiop://searchserver:2819 In my hosts file, I've set searchserver to 127.0.0.1. The ports for my search server are bound to this hostname too. However, when the web app (that uses Spring btw) attempts to lookup the search EJB, it fails with the following error. This is driving me nuts, surely this kind of comms between the servers should be fairly simple to get working. I've checked the ports and they are correct. I note that the exception says the initial context is H00723Node03Cell/nodes/H00723Node03/servers/server1, name: ejb/com/hmv/dataaccess/ejb/hmvsearch/HMVSearchHome. This is the web apps server NOT the search server. Is this correct? How can I get Spring to use the right context? • JSF 2 Annotations with Websphere 7 (JEE5, JAVA 1.6)

    - by gerges
Hey all, I'm currently writing a simple JSF 2 app for WAS 7. When I define the bean via the faces-config.xml, everything works great <managed-bean> <managed-bean-name>personBean</managed-bean-name> <managed-bean-class>com.prototype.beans.PersonBean</managed-bean-class> <managed-bean-scope>request</managed-bean-scope> </managed-bean> When I try to use the annotations below instead, the app failes. package com.prototype.beans; import javax.faces.bean.ManagedBean; import javax.faces.bean.RequestScoped; @ManagedBean(name="personBean") @RequestScoped public class PersonBean { .... } I've set the WAS classloader to Parent Last, and verified in the logs that Mojarra 2.x is loading. • Export Websphere 6.1 Profile with datasource configuration

    - by Virmundi
Hello, I'm trying to export a profile from WAS 6.1 so that I can give it to other members of my team with all of the JNDI and Shared Library configurations in place. I've flowed a few IBM tutorials on this like http://www-01.ibm.com/support/docview.wss?uid=swg21322309 (technically that is more a bug fix, but there is a similar page). I've tried to export the server using the "import" feature of the server in RAD 7. None of these options create a .car file with the resources sticking around. Does anyone know how to do this? Thanks, JPD
