• Database relationships using phpmyAdmin (composite keys)

  Hi, I hope this question is not me being dense. I am using phpmyAdmin to create a database. I have the following four tables. Don't worry about that fact place and price are optional they just are. Person (Mandatory) Item (Mandatory) Place (Optional) Price (Optional) Item is the main table. It will always have person linked. * I know you do joins in mysql for the tables. If I want to link the tables together I could use composite keys (using the ids from each table), however is this the most correct way to link the tables? It also means item will have 5 ids including its own. This all cause null values (apparently a big no no, which I can understand) because if place and price are optional and are not used on one entry to the items table I will have a null value there. Please help! Thanks in advance. I hope this makes sense.

• How do I improve this design for dealing with intersecting date ranges and resolving date range conf

  I am working on some code that deals with date ranges. I have pricing activities that have a starting-date and an end-date to set a certain price for that range. There are multiple pricing activities with intersecting date ranges. What I ultimately need is the ability to query valid prices for a date range. I pass in (jan1,jan31) and I get back a list that says jan1--jan10 $4 , jan11--jan19 $3 jan20--jan31 $4. There are priorities between pricing activities. Some type of pricing activities have high priority, so they override other pricing activities and for certain type of pricing activities lowest price wins etc. I currently have a class that holds these pricing activities and keeps a resolved pricing calendar. As I add new pricing activities I update the resolved calendar. As I write more tests/code, it started to get very complicated with all the different cases (pricing activities intersecting in different ways). I am ending up with very complicated code where I am resolving a newly added pricing activity. See AddPricingActivity() method below. Can anybody think of a simpler way to deal with this? Could there be similar code somewhere out there? • Newbie question: undefined local variable or method , why??

  I am new in Rails (I am using Rails 3.0.3), currently I am following the book "Agile Web Development with Rails" to develop a simple rails application. I followed the book to: --create a model 'Cart' class; --implement 'add_to_cart' method in my 'store_controller', I have a line of code <%=button_to "Add to Cart", :action => add_to_cart, :id => product %> in my /store/index.html.erb As you see, there is :action => add_to_cart in my index.html.erb, which will invoke the add_to_cart method in my *Controllers/store_controller.rb* But after I refresh the browser, I got the error "undefined local variable or method 'add_to_cart'", apparently I do have the method add_to_cart in my 'store_controller.rb', why I got this error??? What is the possible cause??? • Mysql select - improve performance

  Hey, I am working on an e-shop which sells products only via loans. I display 10 products per page in any category, each product has 3 different price tags - 3 different loan types. Everything went pretty well during testing time, query execution time was perfect, but today when transfered the changes to the production server, the site "collapsed" in about 2 minutes. The query that is used to select loan types sometimes hangs for ~10 seconds and it happens frequently and thus it cant keep up and its hella slow. The table that is used to store the data has approximately 2 milion records and each select looks like this: SELECT * FROM products_loans WHERE KOD IN("X17/Q30-10", "X17/12", "X17/5-24") AND 369.27 BETWEEN CENA_OD AND CENA_DO; 3 loan types and the price that needs to be in range between CENA_OD and CENA_DO, thus 3 rows are returned. But since I need to display 10 products per page, I need to run it trough a modified select using OR, since I didnt find any other solution to this. I have asked about it here, but got no answer. As mentioned in the referencing post, this has to be done separately since there is no column that could be used in a join (except of course price and code, but that ended very, very badly). Here is the show create table, kod and CENA_OD/CENA_DO very indexed via INDEX. I've ruled out crystaltech and softsyshosting due to price with better plans. Will be running a small e-commerce site written with ASP.NET MVC 1.0 and want to be sure it will work, as well as looking for cheapest price with best value in regards to disk space/bandwidth. And bandwidth is basically how much data can be sent from your site per month right? Any opinions appreciated as I'm finding this tough to narrow down. I know you can bin deploy MVC but heard full trust mode is required as well as some routing rules in IIS. 1&1 says they can't enable full trust. • How do I target a div without a class or id but with all these specific style-attributes

  I'm restyling a certain page where I don't have access to all the source-HTML. So I'm left over with some hard to target elements within a page I need removed. For example the page is swamped with <div style="float: left; width: 10.25px; height: 284px;"></div>. To get rid of them I tried this in CSS: div[style="float: left; width: 10.25px; height: 284px;"] { display:none !important; } I'd like to fix this using CSS, because the the HTML that needs to be removed is updated using ajax. How do I target a div without a class or id but with all these specific style-attributes?   I am quite new to backbone js and Mustache. I am trying to load the backbone collection (Object array) on page load from rails json object to save the extra call . I am having troubles rendering the backbone collection using mustache template. • real time stock quotes, StreamReader performance optimization

  I am working on a program that extracts real time quote for 900+ stocks from a website. I use HttpWebRequest to send HTTP request to the site and store the response to a stream and open a stream using the following code: HttpWebResponse response = (HttpWebResponse)request.GetResponse(); Stream stream = response.GetResponseStream (); StreamReader reader = new StreamReader( stream ) the size of the received HTML is large (5000+ lines), so it takes a long time to parse it and extract the price. For 900 files, It takes about 6 mins for parsing and extracting. Which my boss isn't happy with, he told me he'd want the whole process to be done in TWO mins. I've identified the part of the program that takes most of time to finish is parsing and extracting. I've tried to optimize the code to make it faster, the following is what I have now after some optimization: // skip lines at the top for(int i=0;i<1500;++i) reader.ReadLine(); // read the line that contains the price string theLine = reader.ReadLine(); // ... extract the price from the line now it takes about 4 mins to process all the files, there is still a significant gap to what my boss's expecting. So I am wondering, is there other way that I can further speed up the parsing and extracting and have everything done within 2 mins?

  Hello, I'm trying to export data to a csv file, as there are chinese characters in the data i had to use unicode.. but after adding the preamble for unicode, the commas are not recognized as delimiters and all data are now written to the first column. • How to "push" updates to individual cells in a (ASP.NET) web page table/grid?

  I'm building something similar to a price comparison site. This will be developed in ASP.NET/WebForms/C#/.NET 3.5. The site will be used by the public, so I have no control over the client side - and the application isn't so central to their lives that they'll go out of their way to make it work. I want to have a table/grid that displays products in rows, vendors in columns, and prices in the cells. Price updates will be arriving (at the server) continuously, and I'd like to "push" any updates to the clients' browsers - ideally only updating what has changed. So, if Vendor A changes their price on Product B, I'd want to immediately update the relevant cell in all the browsers that are viewing this information. I don't want to use any browser plug-ins (e.g. Silverlight). Javascript is fine. What's the best approach to take? Presumably my options are: 1) have the client page continuously poll the server for updates, locate the correct cell and update it; or 2) have the server be able to send updates to all the open browser pages which are listening for these updates. The first one would seem the most plausible, but I don't want to constrain the assembled wisdom of the SO community. I'm happy to purchase any third party components (e.g. a grid) that might help with this. I already have the DevExpress grid/ajax components if they provide anything useful.

  I have the following C# code which should match a quantity / $ price string like "4/$3.99". There isn't any special about the Firefox we used. It's a plain Jane 1252 code page download right off the Firefox site. The computer's local settings are unaltered North American, etc. We have two different computers showing the same effects. It's Firefox 3.6.4, nothing fancy or beta.

  Simple question on best practice. Say I have: public class Product { public string Name { get; set; } public string Price { get; set; } public int CategoryID { get; set; } public bool IsAvailable { get; set; } } and i have a view using IEnumerable< Product as the model, and i iterate through the Products on the page and want to show the total of the prices at the end of the list, should I use: <%= Model.Sum(x=> x.Price) %> or should I use some other method? This may extend to include more involved things like: <%= Model.Where(x=> x.CategoryID == 5 && x.IsAvailable).Sum(x=> x.Price) %> and even <% foreach (Product p in Model.Where(x=> x.IsAvailable) {%> -- insert html -- <% } %> <% foreach (Product p in Model.Where(x=> !x.IsAvailable) {%> -- insert html -- <% } %> I guess this comes down to should I have that sort of code within my view, or should i be passing it to my view in ViewData? Or perhaps some other way?

  I'm trying to work through a problem where I'm mapping EF Entities to POCO which serve as DTO. I have two tables within my database, say Products and Categories. A Product belongs to one category and one category may contain many Products. My EF entities are named efProduct and efCategory. Within each entity there is the proper Navigation Property between efProduct and efCategory. My Poco objects are simple public class Product { public string Name { get; set; } public int ID { get; set; } public double Price { get; set; } public Category ProductType { get; set; } } public class Category { public int ID { get; set; } public string Name { get; set; } public List<Product> products { get; set; } } To get a list of products I am able to do something like public IQueryable<Product> GetProducts() { return from p in ctx.Products select new Product { ID = p.ID, Name = p.Name, Price = p.Price ProductType = p.Category }; } However there is a type mismatch error because p.Category is of type efCategory. How can I resolve this? That is, how can I convert p.Category to type Category? I know in .NET EF has added support for POCO, but I'm forced to use .NET 3.5 SP1.

• C++ Initialize array in constructor EXC_BAD_ACCESS

  I'm creating a simple constructor and initializing an array: // Construtor Cinema::Cinema(){ // Initalize reservations for(int i = 0; i < 18; i++){ for(int j = 0; j < 12; j++){ setReservation(i, j, 0); } } // Set default name setMovieName("N/A"); // Set default price setPrice(8); } The setReservation function: void Cinema::setReservation(int row, int column, int reservation){ this->reservations[row][column] = reservation; } The setMovieName function: void Cinema::setMovieName(std::string movieName){ this->movieName = movieName; } For some odd reason when I run the program, the setMovieName function gives the following error: "Program Received Signal: EXC_BAD_ACCESS" If I take out the for-loop that initializes the array of reservations, the problem goes away and the movie name is set without any problems. Any idea what I'm doing wrong?   It's possible to create an expression tree, if you declare it as such. But is it possible to get an expression tree for an ordinary chunk of code such as a method or property getter? What I'm trying to do is, let's say for an order processing system, I have a class for order items: class Item : Entity { [Cascade] public Document document { get; set; } public int line { get; set; } public Product product { get; set; } public string description { get; set; } public decimal qty { get; set; } public decimal price { get; set; } public decimal net { get { return qty * price; } } public VatCode vat_code { get; set; } } where the net value equals qty * price, so I'd like to declare it as such, either with a property or method, and then also have the framework introspect that expression so it can generate appropriate SQL for defining a corresponding calculated column in a corresponding database view. The most obvious way to do this would be to get the expression tree for a property getter or a method, but I can't find any indication how to do this, or that it is possible. (I have found a way to get a method body as a byte stream, but that's not what's desired here.) If that isn't possible, I suppose the recommended solution would be to declare something like a static field that is an expression tree, and compile/run it at run time for internal use, and also introspect as normal for SQL generation?

  I am having some trouble with using h:selectOneRadio. I have a list of objects which is being returned which needs to be displayed. I am trying something like this: <h:selectOneRadio id="selectPlan" layout="pageDirection"> <f:selectItems value="#{detailsHandler.planList}" /> </h:selectOneRadio> and planList is a List of Plans. Plan is defined as: public class Plan { protected String id; protected String partNumber; protected String shortName; protected String price; protected boolean isService; protected boolean isOption; //With all getters/setters } The text that must appear for each radio button is actually in a properties file, and I need to insert params in the text to fill out some value in the bean. For example the text in my properties file is: plan_price=The price of this plan is {0}. I was hoping to do something like this: <f:selectItems value="<h:outputFormat value="#{i18n.plan_price}"> <f:param value="#{planHandler.price}"> </h:outputFormat>" /> Usually if it's not a h:selectOneRadio component, if it's just text I use the h:outputFormat along with f:param tags to display the messages in my .property file called i18n above, and insert a param which is in the backing bean. here this does not work. Does anyone have any ideas how I can deal with this? I am being returned a list of Plans each with their own prices and the text to be displayed is held in property file. Any help much appreciated.
