• SteelSeries & JavaFX External Control via Tinkerforge

  The first photo shows me controling a JavaFX chart by rotating a Tinkerforge device, while the other two are of me using code by Christian Pohl from Nordhorn, Germany, to show components from Gerrit Grunwald's SteelSeries library being externally controled by Tinkerforge devices: What these examples show is that you can have a robot (i.e., an external device), of some kind, that can produce output that can be visualized via JavaFX charts and SteelSeries components. For example, imagine a robot that moves around while collecting data on the current temperature throughout a building. That's possible because a temperature device is part of Tinkerforge, just like the rotating device and distance device shown in the photos above. The temperature data collected by the robot would be displayed in various ways on a computer via, for example, JavaFX charts and SteelSeries components. From there, reports could be produced and adjustments could be made to the robot while it continues moving around collecting temperature data. The fact that Tinkerforge has Wifi support makes a scenario such as described here completely possible to implement. And all of this can be programmed in Java, without very much work, since the Java bindings for Tinkerforge are simple to use, such as shown in yesterday's blog entry.

  Earlier this year we walked through how to work with BLOBs in Oracle SQL Developer. So you already know how to INSERT, UPDATE and view the BLOBs stored in your tables. But now I want to show you how to include those images in your PDF reports. You know how to work with SQL Developer reports, right? No? OK, let’s do a quick run down memory lane then: How to Build a Bar Chart Child reports – click on parent record for on-the-fly children records Alright, so if you have a GRID report that contains a BLOB column, you have the option of including the BLOB contents when you create a PDF export: At design time, specify how you want the BLOB content to be treated when you export to PDF Note that you must specify the treatment of the BLOBs in the report design. You won’t be prompted when you launch the Export wizard dialog. When you open your PDF, there will be a link to the image. Click it. Click then confirm. It will launch the default image viewer on your machine. I hope your pictures are more excited than mine.

  I took my first tentative steps into the world of Ext JS charts today, in NetBeans IDE 7.4. Click to enlarge the image. Setting up Ext JS is easy in NetBeans IDE because there's a JavaScript library browser, by means of which I can browse for the Ext JS libraries that I need and then NetBeans IDE sets up the project for me. • Star Trek inspired home automation visualisation

  I’ve always been a more or less active fan of Star Trek. During the construction phase of my house I started coding a GUI for controlling the house which has an EIB. Just for fun I designed a version inspired by the LCARS design used in Star Trek TNG and showed this to my wife. I showed her several designs before but this was the only one, she really liked. So I decided to go on with this. I started a C# WinForms application. The software runs on a wall mounted Shuttle Barebone-PC. First plan was an industrial panel-pc but the processor was too slow. The now-used Atom is ok. I started with the LCARS-controls found on Codeproject. Since the classic LCARS design divides the screen into two parts this tended to be impracticable, so I used my own design For now the software is able to: Switch lights/wall outlets Show current temperatures for all room controllers Show outside temperature with a 24h trend chart Show the status of the two heat pumps Provide an alarm clock (e.g. for cooking) Play internet radio streams Control absence Mute the door bell Speak status messages via speech synthesis For now, I’m working on an integration of my electric meter. The main heat pump and the electric meter are connected to my LAN. I also tried some speech recognition, but I’ve problems with the microphone. I't’s working when you are right in front of the PC, but not far away, let’s say on the other side of the room. So this is the main view. The table displays raw values which are sent over the EIB – completely useless but looks great For each floor I have a different view. Here you can see the temperatures and check the status of the lights (the buttons are blinking when a light is switched on) This is the view for the heat pump:   Next step would be to integrate a control of my squeezebox server (I use different Squeezeboxes through the house as a multiroom audio solution)

• [Mac OS X] Terratec Cinergy Hybrid T USB XS is not recognized anymore

  I have used Terratec Cinergy Hybrid T USB XS for years now, alongside with Elgato EyeTV software. I am a happy and completely satisfied user! Since a couple of weeks the USB sitck stopped working on my MacPro1,1 (OS version 10.6.3): EyeTV does not see any device attached, and actually, the green led on the stick stays off. 1) it is not a USB port fault: I have unplugged any other USB/Firewire device and tried with different USB ports, to no avail (any other USB devices work as expected on any port) 2) I have completely uninstalled EyeTV software, including preferences and system daemons/extensions, rebooted and reinstalled the latest EyeTV. No way. 3) reset the PRAM. Nope. 4) checked the Apple System Profiler - USB: No device attached, The MacPro does not see it at all. ============= I need to say that: a) the device worked as a charm even with the latest OS 10.6.x (so it's not a OS upgrade cause) b) I have plugged the Terratec Cinergy Hybrid T USB XS to my MacBook5,1 where EyeTV is not installed and was never installed: The green led on the stick turns on, the growl bubble pops up, and the device is perfectly recognized by the system. Apple System Profiler says (sorry, Italian language): Cinergy Hybrid T USB XS (2882): ID prodotto: 0x005e ID fornitore: 0x0ccd Versione: 1.10 Numero di serie: 061102005755 Velocità: Fino a 12 Mb/sec Produttore: TerraTec Electronic GmbH ID posizione: 0x04100000 Corrente disponibile (mA): 500 Corrente necessaria (mA): 500 At this point I am pretty sure the Terratec stick is not damaged and there is something wrong with my MacPro.   I have been using VMWare Fusion on my Mac to check out my websites on localhost. Now I can't connect anymore with the NAT connection. There seems to be a problem with my IP address or Mac address? I have no idea what causes this, it was working fine before!? In the XP (SP2) VM, in the taskbar I see the Local Area Connection with the yellow warning icon. The bubble says: "This connection has limited or no connectivity. You might not be aisle to access the Internet or some network resources. For more information, click this message." Doing that opens up the Local Area Connection Status panel. In the Support tab, when I click the repair button I get following message: "Windows could not finish repairing the problem because the following action cannot be completed: Renewing IP address." I tried disabling my firewall and also XAMPP that I use as server on OSX. VMWware version: 3.1 VM: XP SP2 Mac OSX 10.6.3 Any help would be greatly appreciated.

• How Mature is Your Database Change Management Process?

As your team of developers and DBAs are working on the changes to the database to support your business-critical applications, how do these updates wend their way through from dev environments, possibly to QA, hopefully through pre-production and eventually to production in a controlled, reliable and repeatable way? In this article, I describe a model we use to try and understand the different stages that customers go through as their database change management processes mature, from the very basic and manual, through to advanced continuous delivery practices. I also provide a simple chart that will help you determine “How mature is our database change management process?” This process of managing changes to the database – which all of us who have worked in application/database development have had to deal with in one form or another – is sometimes known as Database Change Management (even if we’ve never used the term ourselves). And it’s a difficult process, often painfully so. Some developers take the approach of “I’ve no idea how my changes get live – I just write the stored procedures and add columns to the tables. It’s someone else’s problem to get this stuff live. I think we’ve got a DBA somewhere who deals with it – I don’t know, I’ve never met him/her”. I know I used to work that way. I worked that way because I assumed that making the updates to production was a trivial task – how hard can it be? Pause the application for half an hour in the middle of the night, copy over the changes to the app and the database, and switch it back on again? Voila! But somehow it never seemed that easy. And it certainly was never that easy for database changes. Why? Because you can’t just overwrite the old database with the new version. Databases have a state – more specifically 4Tb of critical data built up over the last 12 years of running your business, and if your quick hotfix happened to accidentally delete that 4Tb of data, then you’re “Looking for a new role” pretty quickly after the failed release. There are a lot of other reasons why a managed database change management process is important for organisations, besides job security, not least: Frequency of releases. Many business managers are feeling the pressure to get functionality out to their users sooner, quicker and more reliably. The new book (which I highly recommend) Lean Enterprise by Jez Humble, Barry O’Reilly and Joanne Molesky provides a great discussion on how many enterprises are having to move towards a leaner, more frequent release cycle to maintain their competitive advantage. It’s no longer acceptable to release once per year, leaving your customers waiting all year for changes they desperately need (and expect) Auditing and compliance. SOX, HIPAA and other compliance frameworks have demanded that companies implement proper processes for managing changes to their databases, whether managing schema changes, making sure that the data itself is being looked after correctly or other mechanisms that provide an audit trail of changes. We’ve found, at Red Gate that we have a very wide range of customers using every possible form of database change management imaginable. Everything from “Nothing – I just fix the schema on production from my laptop when things go wrong, and write it down in my notebook” to “A full Continuous Delivery process – any change made by a dev gets checked in and recorded, fully tested (including performance tests) before a (tested) release is made available to our Release Management system, ready for live deployment!”. And everything in between of course. Because of the vast number of customers using so many different approaches we found ourselves struggling to keep on top of what everyone was doing – struggling to identify patterns in customers’ behavior. This is useful for us, because we want to try and fit the products we have to different needs – different products are relevant to different customers and we waste everyone’s time (most notably, our customers’) if we’re suggesting products that aren’t appropriate for them. If someone visited a sports store, looking to embark on a new fitness program, and the store assistant suggested the latest $10,000 multi-gym, complete with multiple weights mechanisms, dumb-bells, pull-up bars and so on, then he’s likely to lose that customer. All he needed was a pair of running shoes! To solve this issue – in an attempt to simplify how we understand our customers and our offerings – we built a model. This is a an attempt at trying to classify our customers in to some sort of model or “Customer Maturity Framework” as we rather grandly term it, which somehow simplifies our understanding of what our customers are doing. The great statistician, George Box (amongst other things, the “Box” in the Box-Jenkins time series model) gave us the famous quote: “Essentially all models are wrong, but some are useful” We’ve taken this quote to heart – we know it’s a gross over-simplification of the real world of how users work with complex legacy and new database developments. Almost nobody precisely fits in to one of our categories. But we hope it’s useful and interesting. There are actually a number of similar models that exist for more general application delivery. We’ve found these from ThoughtWorks/Forrester, from InfoQ and others, and initially we tried just taking these models and replacing the word “application” for “database”. However, we hit a problem. From talking to our customers we know that users are far less further down the road of mature database change management than they are for application development. As a simple example, no application developer, who wants to keep his/her job would develop an application for an organisation without source controlling that code. Sure, he/she might not be using an advanced Gitflow branching methodology but they’ll certainly be making sure their code gets managed in a repo somewhere with all the benefits of history, auditing and so on. But this certainly isn’t the case (yet) for the database – a very large segment of the people we speak to have no source control set up for their databases whatsoever, even at the most basic level (for example, keeping change scripts in a source control system somewhere). By the way, if this is you, Red Gate has a great whitepaper here, on the barriers people face getting a source control process implemented at their organisations. This difference in maturity is the same as you move in to areas such as continuous integration (common amongst app developers, relatively rare for database developers) and automated release management (growing amongst app developers, very rare for the database). So, when we created the model we started from scratch and biased the levels of maturity towards what we actually see amongst our customers. But, what are these stages? And what level are you? The table below describes our definitions for four levels of maturity – Baseline, Beginner, Intermediate and Advanced. As I say, this is a model – you won’t fit any of these categories perfectly, but hopefully one will ring true more than others. Sometimes use a product like SQL Compare or similar to do this Any tests that we might have are run manually Level D2 – Beginner Have some ad-hoc DB version control such as manually adding upgrade scripts to a version control system Attempt is made to keep production in sync with development environments There is some documentation and planning of manual deployments Some basic automated DB testing in process Level D3 – Intermediate The database is fully version-controlled with a product like Red Gate SQL Source Control or SSDT Database environments are managed Production environment schema is reproducible from the source control system There are some automated tests Have looked at using migration scripts for difficult database refactoring cases Level D4 – Advanced Using continuous integration for database changes Build, testing and deployment of DB changes carried out through a proper database release process Fully automated tests Production system is monitored for fast feedback to developers   Does this model reflect your team at all? • Must developers understand the business domain or should the specification be sufficient?

  I work for a company for which the domain is really difficult to understand because it is high technology in electronics, but this is applicable to any software development in a complex domain. The application that I work on displays a lot of information, charts, and metrics which are difficult to understand without experience in the domain. The developer uses a specification to describe what the software must do, such as specifing that a particular chart must display this kind of metrics and this metric is the following arithmetic formula. This way, the developer doesn't really understand the business and what/why he is doing this task. This can be OK if specification is really detailled but when it isn't or when the author has forgotten a use case, this is quite hard for the developer to find a solution. At the other hand, training every developer to all the business aspects can be very long and difficult. Should we give more importance to detailled specification (but as we know, perfect specification does not exist) or should we train all the developers to understand the business domain? EDIT: keep in mind in your answer that the company could used external developpers.

• XNA texture stretching at extreme coordinates

  I was toying around with infinitely scrolling 2D textures using the XNA framework and came across a rather strange observation. Using the basic draw code: spriteBatch.Begin(SpriteSortMode.Deferred, null, SamplerState.PointWrap, null, null); spriteBatch.Draw(texture, Vector2.Zero, sourceRect, Color.White, 0.0f, Vector2.Zero, 2.0f, SpriteEffects.None, 1.0f); spriteBatch.End(); with a small 32x32 texture and a sourceRect defined as: sourceRect = new Rectangle(0, 0, Window.ClientBounds.Width, Window.ClientBounds.Height); I was able to scroll the texture across the window infinitely by changing the X and Y coordinates of the sourceRect. Playing with different coordinate locations, I noticed that if I made either of the coordinates too large, the texture no longer drew and was instead replaced by either a flat color or alternating bands of color. Tracing the coordinates back down, I found the following at around (0, -16,777,000): As you can see, the texture in the top half of the image is stretched vertically. My question is why is this occurring? Certainly I can do things like bind the x/y position to some low multiple of 32 to give the same effect without this occurring, so fixing it isn't an issue, but I'm curious about why this happens. My initial thought was perhaps it was overflowing the coordinate value or some such thing, but looking at a data type size chart, the next closest below is an unsigned short with a range of about 32,000, and above is an unsigned int with a range of around 2,000,000,000 so that isn't likely the cause.

• Need advice for approach for a web-based app that loads excel worksheet but exposes only the charts

  I'm looking for suggestions on the Visual Studio approach to take for a web application that is in the conceptual stage. My environment has a lot of tools: Windows Server 2008 R2 Standard 64bit Visual Studio 2010 Professional Edition Sharepoint 2010 Server Enterprise Edition SQL Server 2008 R2 Office 2010 Professional I know I will need this app to retrieve data from a database (or a web service - not sure exactly at this point). The data needs to be placed in an Excel workbook dynamically. The app will need to have a nice user interface (standard web controls - perhaps with some Javascript effects). The Excel ribbon and worksheet grid will need to be hidden. Some web control(s) will cause the Excel chart(s) to be rendered. I am thinking this sounds like Visual Studio Tools for Office (VSTO) so as to leverage .Net and hide Excel. Can you offer suggestions regarding: One ASP.Net Web App Project One Class Library Project for Excel or perhaps which one of the several different Excel 2010 project types (addin, template, document) Would Excel Services for Sharepoint be useful (or required) ? I am feeling a little overwhelmed with so many choices at this early stage of conceptualizing the app. Can you suggest some ideas for this sort of thing? Also, I am a bit more experienced with C# but I've read VB.Net is better for work with the Excel object model. What are general advises with regard to tool choice and overall approach tradeoffs?

• Terratec Cinergy Hybrid T USB XS is not recognized anymore on Mac OS X

  I have used Terratec Cinergy Hybrid T USB XS for years now, alongside with Elgato EyeTV software. I am a happy and completely satisfied user! Since a couple of weeks the USB sitck stopped working on my MacPro1,1 (OS version 10.6.3): EyeTV does not see any device attached, and actually, the green led on the stick stays off. It is not a USB port fault: I have unplugged any other USB/Firewire device and tried with different USB ports, to no avail (any other USB devices work as expected on any port) I have completely uninstalled EyeTV software, including preferences and system daemons/extensions, rebooted and reinstalled the latest EyeTV. No way. Reset the PRAM. Nope. Checked the Apple System Profiler - USB: No device attached, The MacPro does not see it at all. I need to say that: a) The device worked as a charm even with the latest OS 10.6.x (so it's not a OS upgrade cause). b) I have plugged the Terratec Cinergy Hybrid T USB XS to my MacBook5,1 where EyeTV is not installed and was never installed: The green led on the stick turns on, the growl bubble pops up, and the device is perfectly recognized by the system. Apple System Profiler says (sorry, Italian language): Cinergy Hybrid T USB XS (2882): ID prodotto: 0x005e ID fornitore: 0x0ccd Versione: 1.10 Numero di serie: 061102005755 Velocità: Fino a 12 Mb/sec Produttore: TerraTec Electronic GmbH ID posizione: 0x04100000 Corrente disponibile (mA): 500 Corrente necessaria (mA): 500 At this point I am pretty sure the Terratec stick is not damaged and there is something wrong with my MacPro. • Huge spike in traffic tracked by Google Analytics from Safari browsers

  My site urbanindo.com recently experienced huge spike in traffic tracked by Google Analytics. The huge spike sometime shows in several same pages. This is odd because I rarely experienced that much traffic before. Some pages can have hundreds of visitors at the same time. But when I read the webserver log, those pages only showed up in only one or two entries, not hundreds like the GA showed. But the only similar thing about the entries is that they are using similar browser agent. Mozilla/5.0 (iPad; CPU OS 5_1_1 like Mac OS X) AppleWebKit/534.46 (KHTML, like Gecko) Version/5.1 Mobile/9B206 Safari/7534.48.3 Mozilla/5.0 (iPhone; CPU iPhone OS 5_1_1 like Mac OS X) AppleWebKit/534.46 (KHTML, like Gecko) Version/5.1 Mobile/9B206 Safari/7534.48.3 And when I opened the Google Analytics Audience Technology Browsers & OS and I plotted the chart based on the browsers, I saw that the huge spike came from Safari. This huge spikes started to happen since the beginning of this August, which happens to be when I use multiple webservers behind load balancer (although I'm pretty sure those two are not relevant). Is there something wrong with my GA configuration?

• Will you choose JavaFX for Development?

  A few weeks ago, a poll on the home page of java.net caught my eyes, because it was related to JavaFX. Its title: Will you use JavaFX for development once it's fully ported to Mac and Linux platforms? Usually, the results for this type of polls are published on the editor's Daily Blog soon after the poll closes. For some reason, this didn't happen for the JavaFX poll, so I'll take a shot at interpreting the results.  The results found on java.net look pretty close to the following: Although this way to look at the results already gives us an idea of how much traction JavaFX is getting, there are just too many type of answers that make it hard to read. The answers "maybe" and "I don't know" are awfully similar, so I'm tempted to collapse these together. Then there is "No, I don't do that type of development" that just doesn't belong here, as obviously developers who ave chosen this answer don't develop Rich Internet Apps, and therefore I will adapt the % results accordingly. Finally, I've been tempted to combine the top three categories just t simplify the results. This gives me the following chart:  Whether you prefer the original graph, or my simplified take on it, one thing is sure:  less than 10% of developers who have taken this poll plan to stick to another toolkit (presumably Swing or SWT), while the vast majority is inclined to use JavaFX. When you take into account that JavaFX 2.0 is pretty much a "new" API (no more JavaFX Script), I think these are some pretty good results, 6 months after the official release of JavaFX 2.0.

I was programming as per the instruction of my tech leads and all good things changed in a day. :( All my tech leads (2+ experienced) left the company complaining about salary. And instead of those, company has recruited a 5+ experienced programmer cum tech lead (who is very strict), he is expecting me to code anything he says. Previous seniors of me, would say 'use ajax for this, use query for this instead of coding' and so on. I will do it exactly. I am not experienced enough to perform it myself. Now I am in a dilemma. • Windows 7 / TCP/IP network share guide - looking for to resolve failure to mount lacie network drive but works on XP,Linux,Mac.

  Can anyone advise me of a really good, readable, Windows 7 TCP/IP network share guide, book, or reference. I want this because I cannot mount my Lacie 2big ethernet network drive in Windows 7 (32 bit home), but I can mount it in Windows XP Home 32bit, Ubuntu Linux 10.04 and Apple MacOS X. This drive is being mounted via the accompanying Lacie Ethernet Agent in XP (which I believe uses "Bonjour" protocol), on Mac and Linux it works without further need for software. Another Super User user has the same problem, but no answer: Trouble accessing network drives in Windows 7 I hope my take on the question shows a better willingness to investigate and do some digging - and therefore invite some suggestions to help with this. The drive is detected by Windows 7 (i.e. speech bubble "network drive found") but on trying to open an Explorer window, this remains blank with the Windows busy pointer. I'd prefer not to reinstall Windows 7 to see if that cures the problem, I'd rather understand what is happening/not happening, perhaps even compare differences with Windows XP.
