    I have a database table holding 40 million records (table A). Each record has a string a user can search for. I also have a table with a list of character replacements (table B) i.e. i = Y, I = 1 etc. I need to be able to take the string a user is searching for, iterate through each letter and create an array of every possible outcome (the users string, then each outcome with alternative letters used). I need to check for alternatives on both lower and uppercase letters in the word A search string can be no longer than 10 characters long. I'm using PHP and a MySQL database. Does anyone have any thoughts / articles / guidance on doing this in an efficient way?

    Hello I'm trying to create what I think should be a relatively simple business rule to operate over repeating elements in an XML schema. Consider the following XML snippet (this is simplified with namespaces removed, for readability): <Root> <AllAccounts> <Account id="1" currentPayment="10.00" arrearsAmount="25.00"> <AllCustomers> <Customer id="20" primary="true" canSelfServe="false" /> <Customer id="21" primary="false" canSelfServe="false" /> </AllCustomers> </Account> <Account id="2" currentPayment="10.00" arrearsAmount="15.00"> <AllCustomers> <Customer id="30" primary="true" canSelfServe="false" /> <Customer id="31" primary="false" canSelfServe="false" /> </AllCustomers> </AllAccounts> </Root> What I want to do is to have two rules: Set /Root/AllAccounts/Account[x]/AllCustomers/Customer[primary='true']/canSelfServe = true IF arrearsAmount < currentPayment Set /Root/AllAccounts/Account[x]/AllCustoemrs/Customer[primary='true']/canSelfServer = false IF arrearsAmount = currentPayment Where [x] is 0...number of /Root/AllAccounts/Account records present in the XML. I've tried two simple rules for this, and each rule seems to fire x * x times, where x is the number of Account records in the XML. I only want each rule to fire once for each Account record.   • How To Publish Business Objects Query Service

    We are trying to copy a BO Query Service from one Universe to another. If you use the BO Query As A Service(QAAS) tool you can do this, but end up basically recreating the query service. It seems like the BusinessObjects.DSWS.* libraries allow you to read and write query services, but those don't appear in the QAAS tool. I think that those queries go into a different Universe than the QAAS tool pings. Perhaps there is a Universe for data and another for Web Service Queries. Monitoring the QAAS tool for HTTP traffic revealed that the BO Web Service used to run queries for the data they contain is also used to manage the Web Service queries. I was able to copy one Query Service into a new one in a new Universe using a Replace() on the XML string in QuerySpec to change the UniverseID. We can basically copy one Query Service to another Universe without manually rebuilding it except for one little thing. The QAAS tool includes a Publish button. This does something unknown, but important. Perhaps it makes some SOAP, WSDL or config files so that the copied Query Service is public. There doesn't seem to be any HTTP traffic to snoop on when it's doing this. The BusinessObjects.DSWS.* libraries include a Publish feature, but it's not for Query Services. It's for general files like Excel and PDF. Right now, we are relegated to using two tools. Does anyone know about how to Publish a BO Query Service programmatically just like the QAAS Tool?

    What is the way to implement "business rules" in Rails? Let us say I have a car and want to sell it: car = Cars.find(24) car.sell car.sell method will check a few things: does current_user own the car? check: car.user_id == current_user.id is the car listed for sale in the sales catalog? check: car.catalogs.ids.include? car.id if all o.k. then car is marked as sold. I was thinking of creating a class called Rules: class Rules def initialize(user,car) @user = user @car = car end def can_sell_car? @car.user_id == @user.id && @car.catalogs.ids.include? @car.id end end And using it like this: def Car def sell if Rules.new(current_user,self).can_sell_car ..sell the car... else @error_message = "Cannot sell this car" nil end end end As for getting the current_user, I was thinking of storing it in a global variable? I think that whenever a controller action is called, it's always a "fresh" call right? If so then storing the current user as a global variable should not introduce any risks..(like some other user being able to access another user's details) Any insights are appreciated! UPDATE So, the global variable route is out! Thanks to PeterWong for pointing out that global variables persist! I've now thinking of using this way: class Rules def self.can_sell_car?(current_user, car) ......checks.... end end And then calling Rules.can_sell_car?(current_user,@car) from the controller action. Any thoughts on this new way?

  • Is A Web App Feasible For A Heavy Use Data Entry System?

    Looking for opinions on this, we're working on a project that is essentially a data entry system for a production line. Heavy data input by users who normally work in Excel or other thick client data systems. We've been told (as a consequence) that we have to develop this as a thick client using .NET. Our argument was to develop as a web app, as it resolves a lot of issues and would be easier to write and maintain. Their argument against the web is that (supposedly) the web is not ready yet for a heavy duty data entry system, and that the web in a browser does not offer the speed, responsiveness, and fluid experience for the end-user that a thick client can (citing things such as drag and drop, rapid auto-entry and data navigation, etc.) Personally, I think that with good form design and JQuery/AJAX, a web app could do everything a thick client does just as well, and they just don't know what they're talking about. The irony is that a thick client has to go to a lot more effort to manage the deployment and connectivity back to the central data server than a web app would need to do, so in terms of speed I would expect a web app to be faster. What are the thoughts of those out there? Are there any technologies currently in production use that modern data entry systems are being developed as web apps in? Appreciate any feedback.     I am the only developer at a non-profit organization(~200 employees) where we are a M$ shop and 90% of the things I develop are specific to our company and are internal only. I am given a lot of latitude on how I accomplish my goals so using new technologies is in my best interest. So far I have developed all winform & asp.net applications. I would now like to focus on XAML driven development(WPF & Silverlight) and would like your help. I am subscribed to numerous Silverlight blogs and I have went through a few good tutorials however, I would really appreciate a GOOD SOLID book in my hands going forward. I prefer learning books versus reference books and I REALLY would like one from a Business standpoint as well. Shameless, self-promoting is welcomed if you happen to be an author or reviewer for one that meets my criteria. I would, however, prefer that recomendations were based on first-hand experience(no, 'my friend as this awesome book he told me about', please). Though, I don't mind un-released books if say they are an updated version of an existing. disclaimer -- I know there are an insane amount of Book posts here(SO) but none I believe for my specific need. If there is and I missed it I apologize.

  • Separation of business logic

    When I was optimizing my architecture of our applications in our website, I came to a problem that I don't know the best solution for. Now at the moment we have a small dll based on this structure: Database <-> DAL <-> BLL the Dal uses Business Objects to pass to the BLL that will pass it to the applications that uses this dll. Only the BLL is public so any application that includes this dll, can see the bll. In the beginning, this was a good solution for our company. But when we are adding more and more applications on that Dll, the bigger the Bll is getting. Now we dont want that some applications can see Bll-logic from other applications. Now I don't know what the best solution is for that. The first thing I thought was, move and separate the bll to other dll's which i can include in my application. But then must the Dal be public, so the other dll's can get the data... and that I seems like a good solution. My other solution, is just to separate the bll in different namespaces, and just include only the namespaces you need in the applications. But in this solution, you can get directly access to other bll's if you want. So I'm asking for your opinions.

  • Pulling Data out of an object in Javascript

    I am having a problem retreiving data out of an object passed back from PHP. I've tried many different ways to access this data and none work. In Firebug I see the following... (it looks nicer in Firebug) - I tried to make this look as close to Firebug as possible results Object { data="{"formName":"form3","formData":"data goes here"}", phpLiveDebug="<...s: 198.91.215.227"} data "{"formName":"form3","formData":"data goes here"}" phpLiveDebug "<...s: 198.91.215.227" I can access phpLiveDebug no problem, but the data portion is an object. I have tried the following... success: function(results) { //$("#formName").val(results.data.formName); //$("#formName").val(results.data[0].formName); //$("#formName").val(results.data[0]); //$("#formName").val(results.data[1]); //$("#formName").val(results.data[0]["formName"]); var tmp = results.data[formName]; alert("!" + tmp + "!"); $("#formName").val(tmp); $("#jqueryPHPDebug").val(results.phpLiveDebug); } This line works in the example above... $("#jqueryPHPDebug").val(results.phpLiveDebug); but... I can't figure out how to get at the data inside the results.data portion... as you can see above, I have been trying different things and more not even listed there. I was really hoping this line would work :) var tmp = results.data[formName]; But it doesn't. So, after many days of reading, tinkering, my solution was to re-write it to return data similar to the phpLiveDebug but then I thought... it's gotta be something simple I'm overlooking... Thank you for your time. Please try and explain why my logic (my horrible attempts at trying to figure out the proper method) above is wrong if you can?
