• Why do all my sites randomly stop in iis?

  I have a GoDaddy Account with a virtual hosting environment. For some reason every few weeks, all of our sites (both websites and FTP sites) are stopped. I restart them and they start normally, but I would like to prevent this from happening in the future. It is an iis thing. When you open up iis you can see that each of the sites has been stopped in iis. Also, I have tried looking at the event viewer and I don't see anything, but I am not sure what I am looking for.

• Distribute terrabyte files to the public from web server

  Hi We need to set up a website which makes two or three large files publicly available - the files will be 1 or 2 terrabytes each. Although they will be public, in practise I expect only a relatively small number of scientists will want to download them. What is the best way to allow this? I've had a quick talk to a web-hosting provider (rackspace) and they suggested a hybrid solution. An entry-level managed server (we predict fairly low traffic for the website, but we do need to install some custom CGI software). Some cloud storage which hooks into Limelight Networks. This would host the large files, for download by FTP. It sounded OK to me but I know relatively little about server administration. Does it make sense? Thanks in advance, Mark

• MySql calculate number of connections needed

  I am trying to figure my needs regarding web service hosting. After trying Azure I have realized that the default MySql they provide (through a third party) limits the account to 4 connections. You can then upgrade the account to 15, 30 or 40 connections (which is quite expensive). Their 15 connections plan is descirbed as: "Excellent choice for light test and staging apps that need a reliable MySQL database". I have 2 questions: if my application is a web service which needs to preform ~120k Queries a day (Normal/BELL distribution) and each query is ~150ms(duration)/~400ms(fetch), how many connection do I need? If instead of using cloud computing, I will choose a VPS, how many connections will I be able to handle on a 1GB 2 cores VPS? Thank you!

• I would like to have a publicly accessable linux box hosted elsewhere. Who provides this service?

  I would like to have a general purpose linux server available and publicly accessible. I understand that there are no lack of web-hosting companies, but I might want more control over the machine than is typical. I would want the ability to install software, such as an SVN server, and I would like to be able to expose various port numbers, as I may have a variety of extremely low traffic sites that I would want to have available. Obviously, one option is to host such a machine in my home. Is that my only option? Or is what I describe out there, possible as a virtual machine on a larger server?

  I host a small website with a well known VPS service. They provided me with one IPv4 address upon registering and said additional addresses would require justification. I requested one additional IPv4 address so as to have one for a production environment and one for a testing/QA environment. They said this was unnecessary as I could just use alternative TCP ports for the test environment. I can live with using a non-standard port for non-production hosting, but it got me thinking, what would be valid justification? (I asked them and they didn't want to answer). Is there an industry standard for what counts as "valid" justification for additional IPv4 addresses?

• How do I create email addresses for all my users using my domain ([email protected])?

  My client wants to create email addresses for all their dotnetnuke users using their domain. The point is to keep the user's email addresses 'private' while still allowing communication through a public email address that they can control. It's not necessary to have a full webmail interface (although that would be nice). I'm thinking it would be enough just to forward any mail on and just act as a gateway. So if an email was sent to [email protected], it would be forwarded on to the email address associated with the dotnetnuke account with username 'rwain'. Is this possible to do in a shared hosting environment? Or do I need to create some custom mail server that does a conversion of the email address and forwards it?

  Access requires a username and password Warning: This server is requesting that your username and password be sent in an insecure manner (basic authentication without a secure connection) I am getting this above message. I have hosted a website in godaddy hosting space. But when i run it.. it is prompt for User name and Password (above message). I am not using windows authentications in my website.... • Can you set up a Linode VPS as a reseller type scenario?

  First, I'm a fairly green on this subject. So, go easy. I do web design and development and would like to set up a way to be the central host so to speak for my clients. Currently they are scattered across multiple hosting companies. I've looked at some the cheapy options like a LunarPages and some of the more robust options like RackSpace Cloud and Linode. RackSpace has a reseller program, but it's managed and more at the top end on cost. I'm not seeing any type of reseller program in place for Linode. Can I purchase a higher Linode plan and use Apache2's VirtualHost configuration to handle multiple domains (about 8 domains, but hopefully will grow.). Or, am I not thinking about this correctly?

  Below is my .htaccess file for my website on shared hosting - I'm attempting to send all requests to index.php with parameter 'q' where I wish to parse data etc... unless it's an existing file or directory. • Windows Server 2008 - Setting Up DNS and Web Server (IIS) to host personal website?

  Okay, I have a server, (Windows Server 2008 R2 to be more precise) and I have installed PHP, MySQL, phpMyAdmin, for web hosting purposes. I have set up a static ip address internally. I have installed the role DNS and Web Server (IIS) role. I now set up my forward looking zone as my chosen domain. I set up the nameservers as ns1.domain.co.uk with my IP address which I found from whatismyip.org. However, when I type my IP address, it times out with an error (Timeout Error). Am I doing something wrong? Am I missing something? Also I have seen that most websites have multiple nameservers, which are apparently mirror IP addresses which all redirect to one IP address. Also, I can locally connect using the IP address 192.168.0.8, however, I want to put my website online/live on the internet. Can anyone help me with this? -- Regards

As i made full website in java(JSP + Servlet + mysql + Node.js), its been expensive to host. So i thought that why not to host on own server so that i will be fully dependent on my resources, not on any one else.   Looking into buying a VPS from a company. In their terms of service it says: User may not: a) Use 25% or more of system resources for longer then 90 seconds. There are numerous activities that could cause such problems; these include: CGI scripts, FTP, PHP, HTTP, etc. So basically your only allowed to use a 1/4 of what your paying for? Anyone know if this is a standard restriction for most hosting providers? Seems a bit ridiculous but i don't know whats normal in the server world. And the weird thing is they only sell xen servers so why can't i use my allotted resources as no-one else can. Thanks.

  We have a shared hosting service running QMail and Plesk. One of our inactive clients was left active in the system by mistake, and spammers found their very weak passwords and sent out a massive barrage of messages before we caught the problem and shut off the services for that domain. My question is this: How did they get access to that domain in the first place? The client is long-gone and the domain/DNS is not pointing at our server at all, and neither is the MX record. So how were they able to find that domain and exploit it when nothing on the "outside" was pointing to it?

• How to redirect a specific url through a proxy for multiple services?

  I have a website hosted on 000webhost.com for free. I am unable to connect directly to the site because Comcast has blocked a portion of 000webhost's servers for free accounts due to other people hosting malicious content. In order to maintain my website, I cannot use my computer to directly connect to the server. I am wondering if there is a way by which I can specifically forward attempts to access the server through a proxy, transparently. The current system that I am on is Windows, but I also have systems running Mac OSX and Linux, so solutions for any system could be fine. I've found answers which work for http, but I'm looking for a solution which will let me use all the other functions as well, such as ftp and ssh.

And any available technology that speeds up php performance. We have heard that zend server offers an optimal performance for php.   Background I have a GoDaddy shared Windows hosting plan and I'm running into a small issue with multiple domains. Many people have previously reported such an issue, but I am not interested in trying to resolve that problem altogether; all I want to accomplish is to change the format of my ActionLinks. Issue Let's say the domain that is mapped to my root hosting directory is example.com. GoDaddy forces mapping of other domains to subdirectories of the root. For example, my second domain, example1.com, is mapped to example.com/example1. I uploaded my ASP.NET MVC site to such a subdirectory, only to find that ActionLinks that are for navigation have the following format: http://example1.com/example1/Controller/Action In other words, even when I use the domain that is mapped to the subdirectory, the subdirectory is still used in the URL. However, I noticed that I can also access the same path by going to: http://example1.com/Controller/Action (leaving out the subdirectory) What I want to achieve I want to have my ActionLinks automatically drop the subdirectory, as it is not required. Is this possible without changing the ActionLinks into plain-old URLs?

  We have created an MVC web application in asp.net 3.5, it runs absolutely fine locally but when we deploy it on godaddy hosting server (shared hosting), it shows an error which is related to trust level problem. We contacted godaddy support and they say, that we only support medium trust level application. So how to convert my application in medium trust level. Do I need to make changes to web.config file. • How to minor updates to Drupal-6 with shared hosting

  I've got Drupal working on a shared host, and I uploaded some modules from my home system successfully, but I've got the message that there is a security update for my version, and I should update immediately. I'm not sure how I'm supposed to do that. It seems like the update is an entire new installation. I originally installed it using the hosting company's installer, Fantastico. Should I simply over-write the existing installation with the new files? Or ignore the message? I realize I shouldn't over-write the sites folder, or anything I've modified. The instructions that come with the download seem to be for a major version upgrade, and are way too much trouble for frequent security updates. Searching Drupal's site shows many other methods, but no indication of anything official. And some were ridiculously error-prone, and not really useful. I don't have shell access to the hosting site, although I can pay extra to get it if I really need to. Or, maybe I can clone the site on my local Linux system, do the update using a script, then upload the whole thing. Does anyone have experience with this situation?

  Hi, I've deployed the sample Stock Watcher app to my GoDaddy Hosting site, and I get the error below. I've tried compiling the Project in Eclipse with JRE 1.5 because my Host is using jre 1.5. I think the issue is the "gwt-servlet.jar" is not compatible with jre 1.5. Can anyone confirm this. The project runs fine on my local machine using JRE 1.6. • hosting a high traffic facebook app (game)

  we are currently developing a high traffic facebook application. all the traffic will be within one month, where there are 500.000 to 1.000.000 expected users. after that month, the game is over and we have a winner - so the app will be archived. we are currently planning to develop the application with ruby on rails and searching for hosting options that can deal with the traffic. the problem is not so much the users, but the peak values: we will have around 500.000 requests coming daily within a short timeframe (lets say within 3 minutes in the worst case) we are expecting 500.000 to 1.000.000 users of the application, with peaks at 1:00pm (timezone GMT+1), where most (up to 80% of the users) will send most of the requests. the requests are from 11th of june to 11.july - after that, the app/game is closed/over. we are currently developing an aggressive caching mechanism - currently we are thinking about 2 or 3 small apps/webservices, that will handle the load. the load is distributed as follows: a) main application, cached data (11 screens, 200k each) b) voting: every day until 1:00pm (timezone GMT+1) - every user votes with about 10k data sent, high concurrent peak values! questions: is there any specific application setup that is recommendable? are there any hosting partners that can be recommended? thanks!

• Git repositories on shared hosting with ssh access - multiple users / one ssh account

  I'm part of a small team trying to start coding on a project. I've decided it's time to give git a chance (no more svn) and was trying to see if we could use our shared web hosting to deploy a "public" repository there so that we can easily push/pull to/from it and keep up-to-date with each others changes. The problem I'm having now is that we only have a single ssh account for that hosting. Having used svn in the past, I could enforce a svn username on a given pair of ssh keys, however I don't seem to be able to do something similar with git (in other words tie the ssh keypair to a specific dev). I don't mind everybody having read/write permissions everywhere, since anything that is private should stay on each others machine. Finally, solutions such as gitosis can not be used. I guess my question to you is how is accountability to git pushes given? Is it tied to the ssh account being used, or the email address given in git config? Can I create different ssh keys for every developer (for the same ssh account though), and just send them to the devs?

• Which database to use and system/db administration by layman [closed]

  So my friend and I got briliant ;) idea for a business. Since it is not predictable whether it will work out or not, we decided to keep cost as low as possible to start with, in particular not to hire anyone. If it will work out as expected it will generate enough profit to hire professionals in few months. But for the first few months we'll be doing everything by ourselfs. He's a business/finance major, and I'm a software developer, so obviously I have to take care of IT :) It will be a webapp, written in python/django. My questions regarding this project: 1) What database should I choose? I'm experienced with oracle, and have been working with SQL Server for a while, but both of them are too expensive(at least now). It's a developer experience, I've never done any dba stuff. I'm looking for something free(as in beer). Looks like MySql or PostgreSQL are most popular in this sector. I would appreciate any comments on which db to choose. I'm open to any suggestions(it doesn't have to be MySql or Postgre). Here's what I know about data: It will be almost dates and numbers, a little bit of text. Searched mainly by dates. Data will almost never be updated, mostly inserted and browsed. From 30k to 300k new records/month. 2) Servers. My idea is to rent two dedicated servers. During normal operation one would be a web server(debian/apache), other would be a db server(debian/?). My recovery plan is to install everything on both, and in case of trouble with one of machines just run everything on the other one. Does it even makes sense? Any other tips appreciated. Thanks.
