• PHP namespaces and using the \ prefix in declaration

  The following throws an error stating Exception can no be redeclared. namespace \NYTD\ReadingListBackend; class Exception extends \Exception { } However, removing the \ prefix in the namespace declaration does not: namespace NYTD\ReadingListBackend; I recently adopted PHP namespaces. My understanding is that namespaces prefixed with \ are a fully qualified name. So why can't I use the prefix in the namespace declaration? I can when referencing (e.g. new \NYTD\ReadingListBackend\Exception). Would appreciate a full explanation as I couldn't find anything in the docs.

• Why does concatenating strings in the argument of EXEC sometimes cause a syntax error in T-SQL?

  In MS SQL Server Management Studio 2005, running this code EXEC('SELECT * FROM employees WHERE employeeID = ' + CAST(3 AS VARCHAR)) gives this error: Incorrect syntax near 'CAST' However, if I do this, it works: DECLARE @temp VARCHAR(4000) SET @temp = 'SELECT * FROM employees WHERE employeeID = ' + CAST(3 AS VARCHAR) EXEC(@temp) I found an explanation here: http://stackoverflow.com/questions/1044831/t-sql-cannot-pass-concatenated-string-as-argument-to-stored-procedure According to the accepted answer, EXEC can take a local variable or a value as its argument, but not an expression. However, if that's the case, why does this work: DECLARE @temp VARCHAR(4000) SET @temp = CAST(3 AS VARCHAR) EXEC('SELECT * FROM employees WHERE employeeID = ' + @temp) 'SELECT * FROM employees WHERE employeeID = ' + @temp sure looks like an expression to me, but the code executes with no errors.

• Initialising structs in C++

  As an addendum to this question, what is going on here: #include <string> using namespace std; struct A { string s; }; int main() { A a = {0}; } Obviously, you can't set a std::string to zero. Can someone provide an explanation (backed with references to the C++ Standard, please) about what is actually supposed to happen here? And then explain for example): int main() { A a = {42}; } Are either of these well-defined? Once again an embarrassing question for me - I always give my structs constructors, so the issue has never arisen before.

• FlexBuilder 3 Linked folders not picking up as files.

  I am using Flex Builder 3 to write a flex component. I have created a real folder path \common. Under common I create a Linked Folder to Session. Session points to a shared source folder with a item with a namespace of common\Session\ClassName. When I go to compile the project FlexBuilder warns that it was unable to find the type. if I stop using Linked folders and create a physical \common\Session\ in my project and place SessionInfo.as in the folder then it works. just in case my textual explanation is a bit obscure here is the layout. \src\common\Session\SessionInfo.as namespace of SessionInfo is common.Session. If you need any further info just let me know.

  I have series of files like this: foo1.txt.gz foo2.txt.gz bar1.txt.gz ..etc.. and a tabular format file that describe those files: foo1 - Explain foo1 foo2 - Explain foo2 bar1 - Explain bar1 ..etc.. What I want to do is to have a website with a simple search bar and allow people to type foo1 or just foo and finally return the gzipped file(s) and the related explanation of the file(s). Examples: If array is [2, 3, 10, 6, 4, 8, 1, 7] then returned value should be 8 (Diff between 10 and 2). If array is [ 7, 9, 5, 6, 3, 2 ] then returned value should be 2 (Diff between 7 and 9) My Algorithm: I thought of using D&C algorithm. Explanation 2, 3, 10, 6, 4, 8, 1, 7 then 2,3,10,6 and 4,8,1,7 then 2,3 and 10,6 and 4,8 and 1,7 then 2 and 3 10 and 6 4 and 8 1 and 7 Here as these elements will remain in same order, i will get the maximum difference, here it's 6. Now i will move back to merege these arrays and again find the difference between minimum of first block and maximum of second block and keep doing this till end. I am not able to implement this in my code. can anyone please provide a pseudo code for this?

• variable being weirdly deleted

  im having a weird problem with one variable: its not being recognized but its still printing. i would post my code, but it is massive. the basic idea is: # pseudocode def function(stuff): <do stuff> # These are the only 2 conditions if tag == 3: pka = <a string> if tag == 4: pka = <a string> print pka # (1) print pka # (2) <do stuff not modifying pka> print pka # (3) if pka == 'RSA': <do stuff> elif pka == 'DSA': <do stuff> my code will error at (2). however, it will print out (1), (2), and (3), all of which are the same. is there any general explanation of why this is happening? if my code is really needed, i will post it, but otherwise, i would rather not due to its size update: now the code will error at the if statement after (3), saying UnboundLocalError: local variable 'pka' referenced before assignment even though (1),(2),(3) just printed

• Console App Mouse-Click X Y Coordinate Detection/Comparison

  I have a game that I am working on in a C# console application, purely as practice before going on to better methods. As opposed to using something such as a Windows Forms App, which has button functionality built in, I am endeavoring to grab the cursor position (which I know how to do) and compare it to a number of area's inside a console application as defined by perhaps pixel location, but I also do not know if there is some sort of built in unit of space other than pixels (this last bit is the part I am unable to figure). P.S. I know this is in general terms, with no code already provided, but I do not feel that it is needed as all I am asking for is a brief explanation of how to grab X Y coordinates inside a console application, and stick them in int variables. • Is passing a Command object/Reader to a function a good idea?

  I've been getting some inexplicable errors (running out of connections from the connection pool) with MySql database with .Net 4 (C#). Till now all my attempts at finding a reason for this have been in vain. Now I also have a situation in which a lock on a table is not cleared for a long time even though all I have been doing is read operations from it. My code looks okay (I've put all readers and connections in using blocks). The only anomaly I have is that I've been passing MySqlCommand and MySqlDataReader objects as parameters to functions who work with them. That doesn't seem like a bad idea for me because it avoids some repetition (DRY!). But since I can't find any other explanation I have to suspect that this is causing the problem. What do you think?

  I have a strange problem that probably have a really simple explanation that i've just havn't found. I'm making a WordPress plugin and i want to use jQuery in my settings-page for the plugin. My JS functions look like this: jQuery(document).ready(function() { alert('load test'); //ADMIN FUNCTION $('#mrc_imp_img').click(function(){ alert("test"); }); //FRONT END FUNCTION $("ul.mrc li").hover(function() { $(this).find('p').fadeIn(); } , function() { $(this).find('p').fadeOut(); }); }); The "load test"-alert is being loaded when the document is ready so jquery is properly loaded. The front end function is being used on pages and that's working fine to. the problem is the admin function, it's not working at all. is there a speial way i have to write a .click()-function to get it to work on my settings-page for the wordpress plugin?

• interfacing: simplified

  i've been doing some research on interfaces and a simple layman's explanation for what it truly is. For some reason people love using overly complex explanations and jargon to explain truly simple concepts (guess it makes them feel big) and i have a gut feeling it's the same in this case. so from what i could grasp, it seems like interfaces are nothing more than a way to reserve method names, their return type if any, and the type and amount of arguments they accept. so when a class implements an interface (or interfaces) it is forced to define the body of each method from the interface(s). Am i on the nose with this one or do i need to keep digging? p.s. i know javascript doesn't have support for interfaces, but i still need to understand the concept because there are quite a few places where it's shown how to emulate to an extent.

  I've begun watching a series of first year lectures from the University of New South Wales (UNSW) in Australia, and I'm a bit perplexed by the instructors explanation of how an SRAM gate works. I realize this isn't exactly "programming-related" but since it comes from a series of lectures relating to computing and programming, I thought StackOverflow may be able to help (reddit failed me entirely). In this lecture beginning at around 32:12, Richard (the lecturer) tries to explain how a "latch gate" works within SRAM. Although his students seem to keep up, I feel I'm missing something crucial which is preventing the concept from really "clicking" in my brain.   Hi, heres the problem explanation: Im on the domain https://www.example.com - theres an Order-Form with the Action https://www.example-otherdomain.com with an other SSL Certificate. On some conditions i set the form action to https://www.example.com so that it will be posted on our domain, but if the user uses a CreditCart it should get posted to https://www.example-otherdomain.com. So far so good. But in some rare conditions, users with CreditCards still posts their form to https://www.example.com. So my idea is: Is there some Same-Domain-Policy for Javascript/HTTPS to protect the user from phishing? It seems that to set the FormAction to the same domain works, but not to reset it to the external one (with JS). I cant reproduce this error, so im asking here if someone knows if theres such a problem. It doesnt matter which UserAgent the user has (there are post datas from FF, Chrome, Webkit, IE7/8) Thx!

  Hello, I've got the following problem: I have two tables: (simplified) +--------+ +-----------+ | User | | Role | +--------+ +-----------+ | ID<PK> | | ID <PK> | +--------+ | Name | +-----------+ and M:N relationship between them +-------------+ | User_Role | +-------------+ | User<FK> | | Role<FK> | +-------------+ I need to create a view, which selects me: User, and in one column, all of his Roles (this is done by group_concat). I've tried following: SELECT u.*, group_concat(r.Name separator ',') as Roles FROM User u LEFT JOIN User_Role ur ON ur.User=u.ID LEFT JOIN Role r ON ur.Role=r.ID GROUP BY u.ID; However, this works for an user with some defined roles. Users without role aren't returned. How can I modify the statement, to return me User with empty string in Roles column when User doesn't have any Role? Explanation: I'm passing the SQL data directly to a grid, which then formats itself, and it is easier for me to create slow and complicated view, than to format it in my code. I'm using MySQL

• What's causing “Session state has created a session id, but cannot save it because the response was

  I'm getting this fault intermittently. I found this link which summarises fairly well what I was able to find on the Google: http://www.wacdesigns.com/2009/02/03/session-state-has-created-a-session-id-but-cannot-save-it-because-the-response-was-already-flushed-by-the-application/ Basically it says you can try setting the web config setting DisplayWhenNewSession, or try kicking the session state thing into life by getting the Session.SessionID in the Session_OnStart. But does anyone: a) have an explanation for this or even better, b) have a tried and tested fix I realise that I can't flush the response after doing anything that would affect the http response header. If I did this it would cause an error every time but this is intermittent. The SessionID should surely be created by ASP.NET at the beginning of the page response automatically, before anything in the ASPX page or the Page_Load (which is where all my flushes are called).

  I'm not sure if there is an explanation on SO for beginners, but if so, could you provide the links. I am interested in creating a "recent viewed" function that shows what links they clicked on before. I'm not sure if this is the 'correct' way to do it, but this is what I have so far... user clicks on a link(say ad.php?posting_id=12). if the user doesn't click on the link, no cookie or session is stored for the link if the user clicks on the link, it sets a cookie for $_cookie['ad.php?posting_id=22'] Each time the user clicks, more cookies are set In the recent viewed function, it gets all the $_cookie variables and displays them. if the user wants to clear the history, just destroy all the cookies I'm not sure if this is the way to do it, but is the viable? If not, what are the steps to create a "recent viewed" function

• C++: Why don't I need to check if references are invalid/null?

  Hi all, Reading http://www.cprogramming.com/tutorial/references.html, it says: In general, references should always be valid because you must always initialize a reference. This means that barring some bizarre circumstances (see below), you can be certain that using a reference is just like using a plain old non-reference variable. You don't need to check to make sure that a reference isn't pointing to NULL, and you won't get bitten by an uninitialized reference that you forgot to allocate memory for. My question is how do I know that the object's memory hasn't been freed/deleted AFTER you've initialized the reference. What it comes down to is that I can't take this advice on faith and I need a better explanation. Can anyone shed some light? Thanks, jbu

  Given a Cocoa application which runs on Mac OS X 10.7 and later: What is the best way to check, at runtime, if your app is currently running on a Mac with at least one retina display attached? If checking for this sort of thing is just really wrong-headed, I fully welcome a well-reasoned explanation of why. But I'd still like to know :). It seems likely you could just do a check specifically for the new Mac Book Pro "Retina" hardware (the only Mac at this time which currently has a retina display), but ideally, I'd really prefer a more general/generic/future-proof way to check than this. Ideally, I'd like to know how to detect the retina display, not the specific Mac model which currently happens to ship with a retina display.

  I have a site, e.g. site.com I would like users to be able to access it in their locale at site.com/somecity This is similar to craigslist, but they do it with subdomains e.g. sfbay.craigslist.org Using Apache HTTP server.   We were trying to run fllowing code in rake file: directory "tmp" file "hello.tmp" => "tmp" do sh "echo 'Hello' >> 'tmp/hello.tmp'" end We have taken this code from http://jasonseifer.com/2010/04/06/rake-tutorial But, since we are working on windows commands like'sh','echo' wont work.. according to the explanation given for the above code, it should first create a directory 'tmp' and then create a file 'hello.tmp' which will have 'hello' as its text.. Firstly, how can we do this for windows? and Secondly, a file with extension '.tmp' sounds quite wierd.. what does 'hello.tmp' specifies? Does it simply mean that 'hello.tmp' is a text file in 'tmp' directory?

• Magento - Mage::getModel not working on remote server

  I'm struggling with an issue for which I can't find an explanation. I have two development environments that I use for my projects. I created a simple module for Magento and I tested it on one environment. After overcoming all Magento's complications, the module works as expected. This is on XAMPP. I then copied the module to the development Linux environment, on a hosted server, and it crashes miserably. I did some debugging, and I found out that a call to Mage::getModel() returns bool(false) instead of the instance of the Model I requested. I double checked all files and directories, and they match. Database is not involved (not from my side, at least, I don't need tables) and both environments have only me as a User, with Admin permissions. Any suggestion on where should I start looking is welcome, thanks.
