• Converting linear colors to SRGB shows banding in FFmpeg

  When I convert an EXR file sequence with x264 using FFmpeg and convert the colorspace from linear to SRGB (with gamma 0.45454545) I get some heavy banding issues (most visible on a dark gradient). • MySQL is running VERY slow

  I have two servers: a VPS and a laptop. I recently re-built both of them, and MySQL is running about 20 times slower on the laptop. Both servers used to run CentOS 5.8 and I think MySQL 5.1, and the laptop used to do great so I do not think it is the hardware. For the VPS, my provider installed CentOS 6.4, and then I installed MySQL 5.1.69 using yum with the CentOS repo. For the laptop, I installed CentOS 6.4 basic server and then installed MySQL 5.1.69 using yum with the CentOS repo. my.cnf for both servers are identical, and I have shown below. For both servers, I've also included below the output from SHOW VARIABLES; as well as output from sysbench, file system information, and cpu information. I have tried adding skip-name-resolve, but it didn't help. The matrix below shows the SHOW VARIABLES output from both servers which is different. Again, MySQL was installed the same way, so I do not know why it is different, but it is and I think this might be why the laptop is executing MySQL so slowly. Why is the laptop running MySQL slowly, and how do I fix it? • Mind Reading with the Raspberry Pi

  Mind Reading With The Raspberry Pi At JavaOne in San Francisco I did a session entitled "Do You Like Coffee with Your Dessert? Java and the Raspberry Pi".  As part of this I showed some demonstrations of things I'd done using Java on the Raspberry Pi.  This is the first part of a series of blog entries that will cover all the different aspects of these demonstrations. A while ago I had bought a MindWave headset from Neurosky.  I was particularly interested to see how this worked as I had had the opportunity to visit Neurosky several years ago when they were still developing this technology.  At that time the 'headset' consisted of a headband (very much in the Bjorn Borg style) with a sensor attached and some wiring that clearly wasn't quite production ready.  The commercial version is very simple and easy to use: there are two sensors, one which rests on the skin of your forehead, the other is a small clip that attaches to your earlobe. Typical EEG sensors used in hospitals require lots of sensors and they all need copious amounts of conductive gel to ensure the electrical signals are picked up.  Part of Neurosky's innovation is the development of this simple dry-sensor technology.  Having put on the sensor and turned it on (it powers off a single AAA size battery) it collects data and transmits it to a USB dongle plugged into a PC, or in my case a Raspberry Pi. From a hacking perspective the USB dongle is ideal because it does not require any special drivers for any complex, low level USB communication.  Instead it appears as a simple serial device, which on the Raspberry Pi is accessed as /dev/ttyUSB0.  Neurosky have published details of the command protocol.  In addition, the MindSet protocol document, including sample code for parsing the data from the headset, can be found here. To get everything working on the Raspberry Pi using Java the first thing was to get serial communications going.  Back in the dim distant past there was the Java Comm API.  Sadly this has grown a bit dusty over the years, but there is a more modern open source project that provides compatible and enhanced functionality, RXTXComm.  This can be installed easily on the Pi using sudo apt-get install librxtx-java.  Next I wrote a library that would send commands to the MindWave headset via the serial port dongle and read back data being sent from the headset.  The design is pretty simple, I used an event based system so that code using the library could register listeners for different types of events from the headset.  You can download a complete NetBeans project for this here.  This includes javadoc API documentation that should make it obvious how to use it (incidentally, this will work on platforms other than Linux.  I've tested it on Windows without any issues, just by changing the device name to something like COM4). To test this I wrote a simple application that would connect to the headset and then print the attention and meditation values as they were received from the headset.  Again, you can download the NetBeans project for that here. Oracle recently released a developer preview of JavaFX on ARM which will run on the Raspberry Pi.  I thought it would be cool to write a graphical front end for the MindWave data that could take advantage of the built in charts of JavaFX.  Yet another NetBeans project is available here.  Screen shots of the app, which uses a very nice dial from the JFxtras project, are shown below. I probably should add labels for the EEG data so the user knows which is the low alpha, mid gamma waves and so on.  Given that I'm not a neurologist I suspect that it won't increase my understanding of what the (rather random looking) traces mean. In the next blog I'll explain how I connected a LEGO motor to the GPIO pins on the Raspberry Pi and then used my mind to control the motor!

My need is that given a member variable, I need to know all possible enumeration values. Basically I need a function which takes an instance of one of these enums and returns a list of strings which are all the possible values. When I have an instance, running: print type(foo.enumInstance) I get: <class 'suds.sax.text.Text'> I'm not sure how to get the actual simpleType name from this, and then get the possible values from that short of parsing the WSDL myself.

• HTML, CSS: overbar matching square root symbol

  Is there a way in HTML and/or CSS to do the following, but then correctly: √¯¯¯¯¯¯φ·(2π−γ) Such that there is an overbar above the expression, which neatly aligns with the &radic;? I know there is the Unicode &macr;, that looks like the overbar I need (as used in the above example, though as you can see – it doesn't align well with the root symbol). The solution I'm looking for works at least for one standard font, on most sizes, and all modern browsers. I can't use images; I'd like to have a pure HTML4/CSS way, without client scripting. • Is there any well-known paradigm for iterating enum values?

  I have some C++ code, in which the following enum is declared: enum Some { Some_Alpha = 0, Some_Beta, Some_Gamma, Some_Total }; int array[Some_Total]; The values of Alpha, Beta and Gamma are sequential, and I gladly use the following cycle to iterate through them: for ( int someNo = (int)Some_Alpha; someNo < (int)Some_Total; ++someNo ) {} This cycle is ok, until I decide to change the order of the declarations in the enum, say, making Beta the first value and Alpha - the second one. That invalidates the cycle header, because now I have to iterate from Beta to Total. So, what are the best practices of iterating through enum? I want to iterate through all the values without changing the cycle headers every time. I can think of one solution: enum Some { Some_Start = -1, Some_Alpha, ... Some_Total }; int array[Some_Total]; and iterate from (Start + 1) to Total, but it seems ugly and I have never seen someone doing it in the code. Is there any well-known paradigm for iterating through the enum, or I just have to fix the order of the enum values? (let's pretend, I really have some awesome reasons for changing the order of the enum values)...

• Running mysql 5.5 on centos 5.9

  I installed mysql using yum install mysql-server on centos 5.9 and realized it's version 5.0. I need version 5.5 so then I did yum install mysql55-server however I couldn't find a way to start server version 5.5 instead of 5.0. service mysqld start will start 5.0 server and removing mysql 5.0 doesn't help either because service mysqld start fail to find mysqld service Update 1 Nov 2013: I noticed mysql55 package was being installed to /opt/rh/mysql55/root/usr/bin, so I appended that into the start of my PATH env var but service mysqld start still runs 5.0 server. If I tried running the server using mysqld_safe located on above mysql55 path but it says [root@***** bin]# mysqld_safe Use "scl enable mysql55 'service ...'" invocation Not quite sure what it means. I checked the running mysql version by connecting to it using mysql command line client. [root@***** bin]# mysql Welcome to the MySQL monitor. Commands end with ; or \g.   I having trouble with installation of Fedora and/or Centos. On first steps of installation, on step What type of devices will your installation involve, whatever I choose, same thing happen: I get window with message An unhandled exception has occurred. This is most likely a bug. Please save a copy of the detailed exception and file a bug report. In Details window there are lots of messages. At the end there are: ERR kernel:[ 81.854179] device-mapper: table: 253:1: raid45: unknown target type WARNING kernel:[ 81.854183] device-mapper: ioctl: error adding target to table Same thing occur with several versions of Fedora (17 and 16, x64, live, etc) and with Centos distribution also. • Installing a php extension (xdiff) from pecl on Linux

  I was getting this error on my php script: Fatal error: Call to undefined function xdiff_file_diff() I realised that I didn't had the xdiff extension installed. When I tried to install it using the install pecl xdiff command, I got this errors (among other lines): configure: WARNING: You will need re2c 0.13.4 or later if you want to regenerate PHP configure: error: Please reinstall the libxdiff distribution Then I installed re2c and libxdiff: wget http://www.compdigitec.com/labs/files/re2c_0135_redhat.rpm wget ftp://ftp.task.gda.pl/vol/vol1/ftp.pld-linux.org/dists/2.0/PLD/i386/PLD/RPMS/libxdiff-0.7-1.i386.rpm rpm -ivh re2c_0135_redhat.rpm rpm -ivh libxdiff-0.7-1.i386 But after that I still get the same errors. • Samba4 advice for production use

  I have an old Samba 3 + LDAP server installed that needs to be rebuilt. I'm weighting my options, and Windows Server seems too expensive at the moment, and Samba 4 appeared to be a nice option, coupled with the last Bind 9 that can dynamically add the computers to the DNS. I have about 30 workstations, so I still consider it a small network. My questions are: Is Samba 4 stable enough for production? It seems as if the Samba team is too cautious on when to call their version final, or even beta, as compared with other open source projects. What Linux distribution would you recommend to set it up? I usually use Ubuntu Server, but may use another one if installing / maintaining Samba 4 is better on that one.

  I am planning to migrate from Mac OS X and Windows to either a Unix or Linux distribution, i.e. I am a Linux/Unix beginner. Right now the following caught my interest: Debian: Well established with huge repository of 20000+ apps. gNewSence: "Totally free" version of Ubuntu, so it should be more beginner friendly? OpenSolaris: Also open-source, and built on "strong" Unix base. I do mainly basic tasks such as web browsing, office work, maintaining big photo collection, and a little bit of programming. Questions: How "free" are each of these distributions compared to each other, is this whole freedom thing a big deal? Will a binary labeled as for Ubuntu work on gNewSense? • Good book for a software developer doing part-time (Linux) system administration work

  In many smaller organisations, developers often end up doing some system administration work (for obvious reasons). A lot of the time, they have great developer skills, but few system administration skills (perhaps all self-taught), and so have to learn as they go, which is fairly inefficient. Are there canonical (or simply great) books that would help in this situation? More advanced than just using a shell (presumably a developer can do that), but not aimed at someone that hopes to spend many years doing this work. Ideally, something fairly generic (although specific to a distribution would be OK), covering databases, networking, general maintenance, etc, not just one specific task. For the most part, I'm interested in shell-based work (i.e. no GUI installed), although if there's something outstanding I'm missing, please point it out. (As an analogy, replace "system administration" with C, and I'd want K&R, with C++ and I'd want Meyers' "Effective C++").

  Simple question: There is a gazillion Linux distributions out there. Which one (distribution/incl. window manager) makes (technically) the most efficient use of my (aging) computer ? I have appx. 1 GB RAM and a 1.6 GHz processor, 120 GB hd. I develop applications (C++/.NET/mono/ASP/PostGre SQL/). Usually, I prefer distros with apt-get. Anybody knows which one takes the most care of my limited RAM, and wich one is the fastest/slimmest of them all, that has a decent repo and is damn fast)

• Creating a development environment from a shared hosting production environment (LAMP)

  The production server is shared, I don't have access to php.ini and httpd.conf and most PHP settings cannot be set or overrided using ini_set PHP function. So I would like to create a local development environment having configurations as close as it can be to those of the production environment (LAMP). I don't have shell access to the server but using exec PHP function to run some simple commands is possible. I am using Windows XP Pro and I am going to install on VMWare a linux distribution that is more or less the same as the production server. However, installing apache, mysql and php, and then configuring them like those on the production server is not a easy task. It would be great if there exists any tools that are useful in this situation, tools that can analyze/ inspect the production server and then produce something that can help replicating the environment would be useful. If not, what should I be aware of when I try to manually replicate the production environment?

• Which linux distro for a laptop in windows environmet?

  I just got new laptop at work. What would you recommend as a linux distribution for it? All other developers are working under windows, and use windows tools. I'm currently using ArchLinux, but want to change it. I don't want to waste time configuring wireless, windows network shares, network pritners, projector, etc ... I want this stuff to just work, while still having sane and stable development evironment and tools. Is Ubuntu a good choice for this? I use gentoo at home, but don't think it is a good match for work environmet. EDIT: Note that we are working on cross platform apps, and deployment platform is almost always linux. There are very few windows apps that I have to use (like MS Project). It is just that everything else is windows centric. I use linux because I feel more productive with it, even if I have to dual boot to edit MS Project files.
