• Windows 64bit Sandboxing software alternatives

  As you might know sandboxing software doesn't work in 64bit Windows due to patchguard. What are the alternatives for a person looking to test untrusted / temporary software? Edit: @Nick I'd prefer an alternative to VMs as I'm not happy with the extended startup time, the extra login sequences and the memory overhead that accompanies booting a VM solution to test something out ocassionally as a home user. Also it's another system that needs to be kept secure and up to date.

• "I'm Feeling Lucky"-style behavior in Windows 8.1 search?

  Is it possible to make Windows 8.1 automatically select the most relevant search result, so that I could just press Enter to execute it? Right now, I have to press down-arrow each time to select it, and then press Enter. I occasionally forget to press the down-arrow, and Windows opens that very useful Search Results window for me. It makes me sad since I'm absolutelly happy with the top search result nearly all the time. P.S.: I'm taking about the Search in Start menu (the menu which opens when I press winkey)

• Windows Media Player 11 doesn't download codecs for avi files

  I've got some avi files that WMP will play the audio for but not the video. Why doesn't WMP download the codecs it needs? Or is the solution to download a codec pack and install that manually? In "Options Player" the "Download codecs automatically" option is checked. I've installed VLC so I can watch them, which I'm quite happy about so I don't need a recommendation for a new player.

• Upgrading PS1 Light Gun [on hold]

  Is There any possible way to upgrade the retro G-con Light Gun for PS1 to allow it to interact with HD TV's? I am aware that they were Designed purely for Tube TV's but I would be happy to know of any hardware that would maybe convert the light to hit the Pixels on an LCD TV. If not is there any other Light gun that would work on PS1 games but has the newer light gun hardware that can interact with a higher Pixel LCD TV?

So I'm using Firefox 15.0.1 and I've tried changing {install dir}/searchplugins/google.xml, but Firefox is just ignoring these changes. This account is one of 2 generic accounts, one for students and one for Teachers on Call (TOC). The users are created, but I'm not deploying the server yet. When looking through Google, I came across setting the maximum password age, but not setting the minumum password age (I'd be happy with a 5 year password...)

  I would like to install vmware server 1.x on ubuntu 10.04 server amd64 alpha 3. Would this work? Or should I go with ubuntu 9.04 for now? Edit: In the meantime I decided to go with vmware 2.x. I just installed it on ubuntu server 8.04 LTS amd64 and I am quite happy with it so far.

• Fix static ip address problems in Ubuntu 10.04

  I used Network Manager in Ubuntu 10.04 to set a static ip address and assigned one that was already in use. Now my computer will not boot (nfs crashes). I booted from a live cd to change the configuration on the file system in /etc/network/interfaces but the file looks to be the default. Where does the network manager (the gui from system- preferences) store it's configuration so I can overwrite it and enter the correct ip addresss and have a happy working computer again. thanks!!

• 20GB+ worth of emails in my /home what is a better solution for that?

  My email storage requirements are outgrowing anything reasonable with respect to local mail storage. As we speak 99% of my home partition is filled with personal mail in Thunderbirds mail dirs. Needless to say, this is just painful, badly searchable and as history has proven me that backups work, but Thunderbird is capable of loosing a lot of mail very easily. Currently I have an remote IMAPS server (Dovecot) running for my daily mail, accessible from anywhere, which from my own practice works efficiently up to about 1000 emails. Then some archive directories should be used to move mail around. I have been looking into DBMail, but I wonder if I make my case worse or better which such solution. None of the supported database employ string deduplication or string compression out of the box, so is this going to help me with 20GB+ mail? What about falling back to a plain old IMAP server? A filesystem like ZFS would support stuff like GZIP transparently, which could help. Could someone share their thoughts? The 20GB mostly consists of mailinglists, and normal mail. Not things like attachments. To add some clarifications; As we speak, my mail is not server side indexed at all - only my new mail arrives at a remote IMAP server. It is all local storage from former POP3 accounts, local mirrored Gmail and IMAP accounts. In my perspective it is not Thunderbird that sucks, its fileformat that sucks. Regarding the 1000 mails. On the road I am using Alpine and MobileMail, quite happy with both of them, but some management is required to actually manage the mail. Sieve helps a lot with that, but browing through 10.000 e-mails is not fun, especially not on a mobile client. I am quite happy with Dovecot, never had any issues with it. I just wonder if this is the way to go. Or if there are any other better solutions. What my question is: what is the best practice solution that allows 20GB+ mails and is -on demand remotely accessible, easy to backup and archive worthy. It doesn't need to be available 24x7. • Stop windows resuming from hibernation to install automatic updates

  I always hibernate my work (Windows 7, x64) laptop when leaving for the night. Sometimes when I come in again in the morning, the laptop is powered up and there's a message telling me that new updates have been installed. (I've changed the registry so automatic updates don't force a reboot.) I'm happy to have Windows apply updates automatically, but I don't want it to resume from hibernation to do so. How can I stop this behaviour so I'm not wasting electricity?

• Audio recording and playback using NAudio

  When I try recording audio following this here, and using the related source code from here in the (voicerecorder.audio project), I face the problem that the recording stops within moments of starting and so does the playback. the recorded file is 46 bytes, and playback is there for less than a second, basically, the thread jumps to the next statement immediately. If I try to sleep the thread, it doesn't help. What can I do to keep it in the recording mode or playback mode until user interrupt ?

  I'm trying to find like NeHe's tutorials for Qt that are all in GLSL. Because lets face it, OpenGL in the old days are dead and Shaders are the only way now. And with Qt-4.6 they introduced the QMatrix4x4, QVector3, and the Shader classes. But I cannot find any tutorials for this. All the ones I do find, all use crappy SDL and/or GLUT (Which are just plain useless).

• how to integrate openCV and ARtoolkit

  hi all, I need to use both openCV and ARtoolkit libraries in the same project. I'm trying to get frame by using arVideoGetImage() function in order to process for with openCV functions. however program throws a "System.AccessViolationException" error in the following line of face detection example: CvSeq *faces = cvHaarDetectObjects(img, cascade, storage, 1.1, 3, 0, cvSize( 40, 40 )); ARtoolkit and openCV are work perfectly separately. Anyone has able to work these two library together, or any suggestion?? thanks
