  Hi, I am quite new to COM so the question may seem naive. Q1. About Windows DLL Based on my understanding, a Windows DLL can export functions, types(classes) and global variables. Is this understanding all right? Q2. About COM My naive understanding is that: a COM DLL seems to be just a new logical way to organize the functions and types exported by a standard Windows DLL. A COM DLL exports both functions such as DllRegisterServer() and DllGetClassObject(), and also the Classes which implements the IUnknown interface. Is this understanding all right? Q3. *.def & *.idl *.def is used to define the functions exported by a Windows DLL in the traditional way, such as DllGetClassObject(). *.idl is used to define the interface implemented by a COM coclass. • Calling one DAO from another DAO?

  Can this ever make sense? Say I need to fetch an object from the DB which has a relation to another object (represented by a foreign key in the DB, and by a composition in my domain object). If in my first DAO I fetch the data for object 1, then call the dao for object 2, and finally (from within the first DAO, call the setter in object 1 and give it the previously fetched object 2). I know I could do a join instead, but it just seems more logical to me to decouple the functionality (which is why I am skeptical about calling one dao from another). Or should I move some of the logic to the service layer? Thanks Update: I think I solved the problem with help from the answers: all I needed to do was add the following to my mapping of Object 1: <one-to-one name="Object2" fetch="join" class="com...Object2"></one-to-one> I didn't have to change anything else. The NotSpecification seems simple at first: NotSpecification.IsSpecialCaseOf(otherSpecification) return !this.specification.isSpecialCaseOf(otherSpecification) But it doesn't work for all Specifications: Not(LesserThan(5)).IsSpecialCaseOf(GreaterThan(4)) This should be true. So far I think that the only way to accomplish the isSpecialCaseOf the NotSpecification is to implement the remainderUnsatisfiedBy (partial subsumption in the paper on the specification pattern). But maybe I am missing something more simple or a logical insight that makes this unnecessary. Question: Is there another way of implementing this by not using remainderUnsatisfiedBy?

• What's the thought behind Children and Controls properties in WPF?

  I don't know if this should go on Programmers, but I thought it was relevant here. Being a skilled WPF programmer myself, I often wonder what people were thinking when they designed WPF in terms of naming conventions. Why would you sometimes have a property called Children for accessing the children of the control, and then sometimes have an equivalent property, just called Controls instead? What were they thinking here? Another example is the Popup control. Instead of a Content property, it has a Child property. Why would you do that? To me that's just confusing. So I'm wondering if there's a logical reason for it, which would probably also help me understand what the properties are called next time I need to do some speed-programming. If there's no reason behind it, then all I can say is WAT.

• Get the date of a given day in a given week...

  i need to start at a year-month and work out what the date it is in a given week, on a given day within that week.. i.e year: 2009 month: 10 week: 5 day-number: 0 would return 2009-10-25 00:00:00 which is a sunday. Notice week 5, there is no day 0 in week 5 in 2009-10 as the sunday in that logical week is 2009-11-01 00:00:00... so week 5 would always return the last possible date for the given day in the given month.. if you havn't guessed already i'm messing with the c struct TIME_ZONE_INFORMATION (link text) which is pretty crazy if i'm fair... Date math and SQL are something to be admired, sadly its something i have never really dug deep into beyond stripping times. Any help would be greatly appriciated. PS: mssql 2005 btw..

When I try to run this code, System.out.println("STRING TOKENIZER CLASS".contains(" ")); It printed funny result, FALSE It sound not logical right? I've no idea what went wrong. I found out the reason, the space was not recognized as valid space by Java somehow. But, I don't know how it turned up to be like that from the front processing up to the code that I've posted.

• Synonym for "Many-to-Many" relationship (relational databases)

  What's a synonym for a "many-to-many" relationship? I've finished writing an object-relational mapper but I'm still stumped as to what to name the function that adds that relation. addParent() and addChild() seemed quite logical for the many-to-one/one-to-many and addSuperclass() for one-to-one inheritance, but addManyToMany() would sound quite unintuitive to an object-oriented programmer. addSibling() or addCousin() doesn't really make sense either. Any suggestions? And before you dismiss this as a non-programming question, please remember that consistent naming schemes and encapsulation are pretty integral to programming :)

• WebKit and npapi and mingw-w64

  Hi, The problem is the following: On Windows x64, pointers are 64-bit, but type long is 32-bit. MSVC doesn't seem to care, and even omits warnings about pointer truncation on the default warning level. Since recently, there is a GCC that target x86_64-w64-mingw32, or better Windows x64 native. GCC produces errors when pointers are truncated (which is the logical thing to do...), and this is causing trouble in WebKit and more specifically, the Netscape Plugin API: First, there's the files (I can only post one hyperlink...): http://trac.webkit.org/browser/trunk/WebCore/ bridge/npapi.h -- defines uint32 as 32-bit int type (~line 145) plugins/win/PluginViewWin.cpp -- casts Windows window handles to 32-bit int, truncating them (~line 450) My proposed fix was to change the uint32 casts to uintptr_t, which makes GCC happy, but still puts a 64-bit value in a uint32 (=unsigned long). I have no clue how to solve this, because clearly WebKit is happy truncating pointers on Win64... How can I solve this the right way? Thanks!

  My application (Asp.Net MVC) has great interaction with the user interface (jQuery/js). For example, setting various searches charts, moving the gadgets on the screen and more .. I of course want to keep all data for each user. So that data will be available from any page in the Dumaine and the user will accepts his preferences. Now I keep all data in a cookie because it did not seem logical asynchronous access to the server each time the user changes something and thet happens a lot.When the user logout from the application I save the cookie to the database. The problem is the cookie becomes very large. The thought that this huge cookie is attached to each server request makes me feel that my attitude is wrong. Another problem cookies have size limit. It varies from your browser but I definitely have been close to the border - my cookie easily become 4kb Is there another solution?

  I'm about to design my Web service API, most of the functions of my API is basically very simular to my web application. Now the question is, should I create 1 single method and reuse them for both the web application and the web service api? (This seems to be the logical solution, however its very complicated; it's much easier to duplicate the method used by the web application, and keep both separate, ie one method for the web application and one method for the web service.) • Reference a internal class from a Windows Workflow Activity

  I'm creating a custom Workflow activity for use within TFS2010. In the same assembly I have a XAML activity and a C# code activity. The XAML activity references the code activity. When the assembly is deployed to our clients, I only want them to be able to use the Workflow activity. The code activity is of little use by itself and would no doubt confuse them. I thought the logical way to do this would be to set the code activity class to internal: the XAML is in the same assembly and should be able to access it. However, when I do that I get an error in the XAML saying that the assembly can't be found. Is there a way to make activities internal/hidden?

  I'm using DateJS to parse user-inputted dates, and getting some strange results. Date.parse("15 Jan 2010") returns Fri Jan 15 00:00:00 EST 2010 (right) Date.parse("15-Apr-2010") returns Thu Apr 15 00:00:00 EDT 2010 (right) Date.parse("15 Apr 2010") returns Thu Apr 1 00:00:00 EDT 2010 (wrong) As far as I can tell, the d MMM yyyy input format works fine for every month except April and August; in those two cases, it returns the first of the month no matter what day is entered. Is this a bug, or is there a logical explanation I'm missing?

• Using a UIPickerView to make a CoreData Relationship

  Okay, so I have a fairly simple application set up. I have two different CoreData Entities, Games and Platforms, each have one attribute: name, and they have a one-to-many relationship between them. Platforms are populated on the first launch of the application, and will never change as a result of user input. I'm working on my Add view to let the user add new games to their personal database, and each game should select from a platform. The add view itself is a grouped table view with static custom cells. Tapping the platform cell should advance the user to another view to select the platform. My thought is that UIPickerView seems like a logical choice for the control, since the Platform list is static, but I'm not sure how to use it with CoreData. Even if I construct a fetch request to get the Platform objects and extract the strings out, how do I go about linking the new Game object to the original Platform object?

Person person = getPerson(candidate.getLogin()); ... } @TransactionAttribute(TransactionAttributeType.REQUIRES_NEW ) private Person getPerson(String login) throws ControllerException { Person person = em2.find(Person.class, login); return person; } Those methods are annotated with REQUIRES_NEW transcaction to avoid this exception. When I was calling these method from javaFX applet, all worked as expected. Now I'm trying to call them from JAX-RS webservice (I don't see any logical difference as in both cases ejb was looked up in initial context) and I keep getting this exception. When I set up XADatasource in glassfish 2.1 connection pools, I got nullpointer exception on em2. Any ideas what to try next? Regards

  mjustin in his question 1 and question 2 says that TWideStringField.Size property for UTF8 fields in Delphi 2009 dbExpress is 4 times larger than the logical field size (max number of characters in the field). I inclined to consider this a dbExpress bug. That is what Delphi 2009 Help says: The interpretation of Size depends on the data type. The meaning of Size for data types that use it is given in the following table. For all other data types, Size is not used and its value is always 0. ftString - Size is the maximum number of characters in the string. I am using FibPlus 6.9.9 and it follows the above documentation - the string field size is the maximum number of characters, not bytes. So the question also implies the following question: Are DbExpress drivers in Delphi 2009 unusable for unicode databases?

• C# winforms: DataSet with multiple levels of related tables

  Hi, I am trying to use DataSet and DataAdapter to "filter" and "navigate" DataRows in DataTables. THE SITUATION: I have multiple logical objects, e.g. Car, Door and Hinge. I am loading a Form which will display complete Car information including each Door and their respective Hinges. In this senario, The form should display info for 1 car, 4 doors and 2 hinges for each door. Is it possible to use a SINGLE DataSet to navigate this Data? i.e. 1 DataRow in car_table, 4 DataRow in door_table and 8 DataRow in hinge_table, and still be able to navigate correctly between the different object and their relations? AND, able to DataAdapter.Update() easily? I have read about DataRelation but don't really understand how to use it. Not sure if it is the correct direction for my problem. Appreciate any advise. • How do I get Linq-to-SQL to refresh its local copy of a database record?

  Suppose I have an Orders table in my database and a corresponding model class generated by the VS2008 "Linq to SQL Classes" designer. Suppose I also have a stored procedure (ProcessOrder) in my database that I use to do some processing on an order record. If I do the following: var order = dataContext.Orders.Where(o => o.id == orderId).First(); // More code here dataContext.ProcessOrder(orderId); order.Status = "PROCESSED"; dataContext.SubmitChanges(); ...then I'll get a concurrency violation if the ProcessOrder stored proc has modified the order (which is of course very likely), because L2S will detect that the order record has changed, and will fail to submit the changes to that order. That's all fairly logical, but what if I want to update the order record after calling the stored proc? How do I tell L2S to forget about its cached copy and refresh it from the DB?

• Should I worry about reigning in namespace number/length/scope?

  I've recently reorganized a solution-in-progress from 24 projects to 4. To keep the copious files organized in the "main" project, things are in folders in folders in folders. I think I've preserved a logical, discoverable arrangement of the solution content. As a result, of course, I end up with namespaces like AppName.DataAccess.NHibernate.Fluent.Mappings. Is there any compelling reason that I should care about flattening out the namespace hierarchy when my project has a somewhat deeply nested folder structure? (I am not concerned about resolving or managing using directives; I let ReSharper do all the heavy lifting here.)

  We want to get a row from a table using Hibernate a la: select max(id) from mytable where date = <date> Then select * from mytable where id = <max_id> We are currently using Hibernate to map mytable to Java domain objects. I know how to load the domain object based on an id. So I could just do #1 using JDBC and then load the domain object using Hibernate the "normal" way. But.. is there a way to do this with one single Hibernate logical query?

• Java swing examples - Ants running around a world getting food from piles?

  I haven't done any swing programming in a while, so I'm looking for some GUI examples that are at least close to what I'm trying to do. The gui that I'll need to be representing is small nodes (let's say ants) travelling around collecting food from food piles (which just means small nodes travelling to bigger nodes). Once the node (ant) takes a piece of food, the pile shrinks a bit and the ant takes it back home (to ANOTHER circle). This SOUNDS pretty trivial, but all of the boilerplate involved in setting up a java GUI just makes little logical sense to me, and the GUI is such a small piece of my project. Any examples that would be great for this style of project would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

• C# switch: case not falling through to other cases limitation

  This question is kind of an add-on to this question In C#, a switch case cannot fall through to other cases, this causes a compilation error. In this case I am just adding some number to the month total for the selected month and each subsequent month thereafter. (simple example, not meant to be real) switch (month) { case 0: add something to month totals case 1: add something to month totals case 2: add something to month totals default: break; } Is there a logical alternative to this in C# without having to write out a ton of if statements? if (month <= 0) add something to month if (month <= 1) add something to month if (month <= 2) add something to month .... etc
