• Creating a CD-burning feature for a music player based on Java

- by jjanggoo
Hi, I'm trying to create a CD-burning feature for a Java-based music player for my school project. Since I'm new to real-life programming (I've only learned to write codes on AP Computer Science A level), I don't know how I can apply the concepts I learned from APCS A to this task. A friend of mine who is studying computer science at graduate school told me to "look up the cd player control functions and add methods in those classes to read in data that you want to write to the CD, write it to a buffer, write everything in the buffer to the CD itself, clear the buffer and then write a new chunk of data into the buffer," but I can't quite grasp what this means, and tt's really hard to contact her right now because she's busy working on her dissertation. Can someone from this forum please guide me through & explain the general concepts? Thank you!

• boost::program_options bug or feature?

- by Dmitriy
Very simple example: #include <string> #include <boost/program_options.hpp> namespace po = boost::program_options; int main(int argc, char* argv[]) { po::options_description recipients("Recipient(s)"); recipients.add_options() ("csv", po::value<std::string>(), "" ) ("csv_name", po::value<unsigned>(), "" ) ; po::options_description cmdline_options; cmdline_options.add(recipients); po::variables_map vm; po::store(po::command_line_parser(argc, argv).options(cmdline_options).run(), vm); po::notify(vm); return 0; } And some tests: >Test --csv test in option 'csv_name': invalid option value >Test --csv_name test in option 'csv_name': invalid option value >Test --csv_name 0 >Test --csv text in option 'csv_name': invalid option value >Test --csv 0 >Test --csv_name 0 >Test --csv_name 0 --csv text multiple occurrences Looks like that boost::program_option threats parameter "csv" as "csv_name". Is it a feature or bug?

• Can you exclude code automatically when using the publish feature in Visual Studio

- by LarryDev
Is their a way to exclude a block of code when you use the publish feature in visual studio. In other words say I had a log in button that did something like: // Start Exclude when publishing if (txtUserName.Text == "" && txtPassword.Password == "") { lp = new System.ServiceModel.DomainServices.Client.ApplicationServices.LoginParameters("UserName", "Password"); } else // Stop Exclude when publishing { lp = new System.ServiceModel.DomainServices.Client.ApplicationServices.LoginParameters(txtUserName.Text, txtPassword.Password); } This way when I am debugging I can just leave the username and password field blank and just click login and the application will log me on. But when the application is published the compiler woudl ignore that code and not compile it in to the application.

• Seeking a GUI auto-format feature for T-SQL

- by dvanaria
Is there a freely available GUI tool that will allow interaction with Microsoft SQL Server (via T-SQL) that provides an auto-format feature? I constantly find myself writing queries in SQL Query Analyzer (Microsoft’s standard GUI tool for T-SQL) and cutting/pasting the whole thing into SQLyog (a GUI tool for MySQL), where I can press F12 and have it reformatted into an easily readable, industry standard format. I then cut/paste this back into Query Analyzer to execute. I do this all the time at work and haven’t been able to find an alternative. I realize that SQLyog is no longer free software, but what I’m looking for is a specific alternative to a MS SQL Server interface (with auto-formatting). Thanks in advance for your help.

- by Suriyan Suresh
Get location(lat/long) without GPS, just like my location feature in Google maps. I have Google Maps in my mobile (Sony Ericsson G502 without GPS). It works fine without GPS in India. 1.How Google finds my position? 2. When i am searching cellid in opencellid database, it has less number of records for India. but Google Maps works fine in my mobile(India) 3.Is Google uses opencellid database or its own?. if Google uses its own, shall we have access to it database

• asp.net-mvc feature - one css file per (view / master-page / user-control)

- by Mendy
I'm trying to implement the following feature: I want just one css file to be attached for any page that I rendered. For example take StackOverflow site. For the questions page, we will have questions.css file. so.com/questions ---> questions.css so.com/question/1234/title ---> question.css so.com/about ---> about.css so.com/faq ---> faq.css Now, I know that this css files share code in common, because they may have the same MasterPage(s) / UserControls. So, the solution need to take into account MasterPages, views and usercontrols as well. So, what will be the right solution for this kind of problem? I'm thinking about one solution, I'll put is as an answer, but maybe you have a better solution for this?

• Feature categories for a social network

- by mafutrct
Not sure if this question belongs on SO. Anyway, please let me try to clarify the issue. I'm currently planning a social program. It's basically a chat server with the major additional ability to play games. I'd like to create categories of features that are offered to users. My question is, are there any useful standard feature categories? Does not have to be specific to my case, I'm interested in the general case as well. Just to give you an idea of what I'm thinking: functional e.g. play games social e.g. chatting operational e.g. 24/7 service availability I'm entirely unsure if this is the right place to ask, if you know of any better site to ask please don't hesitate to add a comment.

• C++ missing feature: variables with mutating names

- by user345671
Hello. Can someone please add a feature to C++? I would like to change variable names depending on the context. Example: Class stuff; if(stuff.hasSuperPowers()) { stuff becomes stuffWithSuperPowers; } That because creating a new variable and using an assignment sucks and lets stuff be acessible in that scope anyway. If you do it, please keep the becomes syntax unless it doesn't look good enough for you as a native English speaker. Thanks in advance.

• Bug Tracker - Feature set - Comparison

- by Blankman
Hi, I have installed and played around with a few bug tracking apps, and just wanted to get some feedback and features that a typical (or not so typical) bug tracking software has. I want to make sure I am not overlooking a feature that might come in handy. So the biggest idea is around a bug, which is associated with: Bugs - product - product version - component (specific component of the product) - status - priority - assigned to - expected time to finish - time spent on it so far - created by - historical log of bug Forums Wiki I guess the above functionality is common to all, so what exactly differentiates them? Is it simply the UI and filtering/searching that you base a decision on? (I am comparing something like Jira with FogBugz)

• Undocumented feature of Dictionary?

- by Jon
Dictionary<string, int> testdic = new Dictionary<string, int>(); testdic.Add("cat", 1); testdic.Add("dog", 2); testdic.Add("rat", 3); testdic.Remove("cat"); testdic.Add("bob", 4); Fill the dictionary and then remove the first element. Then add a new element. Bob then appears at position 1 instead of at the end, therefore it seems to remember removed entries and re-uses that memory space? Is this documented anywhere because I can't see it on MSDN and has caused me a day of grief because I assumed it would just keep adding to the end.

• Explain the code: c# locking feature and threads

- by Mendy
I used this pattern in a few projects, (this snipped of code is from CodeCampServer), I understand what it does, but I'm really interesting in an explanation about this pattern. Specifically: Why is the double check of _dependenciesRegistered. Why to use lock (Lock){}. Thanks. public class DependencyRegistrarModule : IHttpModule { private static bool _dependenciesRegistered; private static readonly object Lock = new object(); public void Init(HttpApplication context) { context.BeginRequest += context_BeginRequest; } public void Dispose() { } private static void context_BeginRequest(object sender, EventArgs e) { EnsureDependenciesRegistered(); } private static void EnsureDependenciesRegistered() { if (!_dependenciesRegistered) { lock (Lock) { if (!_dependenciesRegistered) { new DependencyRegistrar().ConfigureOnStartup(); _dependenciesRegistered = true; } } } } }

• How to program a Sort feature

- by Brian Roisentul
I'm working on Ruby on rails 2.3.4 and I'm trying to develop a Sort feature on my website's search page(its url is /anuncios/buscar). What I tried is to create a "map" on routes file: map.search_filter_relevance "/anuncios/buscar", :controller => 'announcements', :action => 'search_filter_relevance' Then, I wrote this on the view: <%= link_to 'MÁS RELEVANTES', search_filter_relevance(@announcements) %> And finally, I created a method in the controller, as is specified on the routes' line: def search_filer_relevance raise params.inspect end First of all, as I'm sorting search results, I'd like to keep them in their public variable called @announcements. Please help me do this. An the other thing is that when I click the link I get an error due its trying to access the Show action instead of search_filter_relevance as specified in routes. Why is this happening?

• JQuery Facebook like Tag feature

- by Tech
Hi, Does anyone know of a very basic tag JQuery script? (Facebook like tag feature) All I want to do is when I type @ in a text box for it to search an AJAX search, it then brings back a display name i.e. "Bob Johnson" and an associated Id and stores the Id in a comma delimited list. So an example would be the following .... [TextArea] [Name 1] [Name 2] [Name 3] The thing is it also needs to remove this entry (Id) once the tag gets removed, also it needs to load into a DIV which has a scrollbar so that the list doesn't get to big. If anyone know's how/if this is possible that would be great. Thanks.

• C# overloading with generics: bug or feature?

- by TN
Let's have a following simplified example: void Foo<T>(IEnumerable<T> collection, params T[] items) { // ... } void Foo<C, T>(C collection, T item) where C : ICollection<T> { // ... } void Main() { Foo((IEnumerable<int>)new[] { 1 }, 2); } Compiler says: The type 'System.Collections.Generic.IEnumerable' cannot be used as type parameter 'C' in the generic type or method 'UserQuery.Foo(C, T)'. There is no implicit reference conversion from 'System.Collections.Generic.IEnumerable' to 'System.Collections.Generic.ICollection'. If I change Main to: void Main() { Foo<int>((IEnumerable<int>)new[] { 1 }, 2); } It will work ok. Why compiler does not choose the right overload?

• autocomplete-like feature with a python dict

- by tipu
In PHP, I had this line matches = preg_grep('/^for/', array_keys($hash)); What it would do is it would grab the words: fork, form etc. that are in $hash. In Python, I have a dict with 400,000 words. It's keys are words I'd like to present in an auto-complete like feature (the values in this case are meaningless). How would I be able to return the keys from my dictionary that match the input? For example (as used earlier), if I have my_dic = t{"fork" : True, "form" : True, "fold" : True, "fame" : True} and I get some input "for", It'll return a list of "fork", "form", "fold"

• New Cumulative Updates for SQL Server 2005 & SQL Server 2008 R2

- by AaronBertrand
Early this morning, the SQL Server Release Services team pushed out three new cumulative updates for SQL Server. KB #2489375 - SQL Server 2005 SP3 CU #14 (9.00.4317) KB #2489409 - SQL Server 2005 SP4 CU #2 (9.00.5259) KB #2489376 - SQL Server 2008 R2 CU #6 (10.50.1765) There are a lot more fixes in the 2008 R2 update - 43, by my count. In comparison, only 9 fixes for 2005 SP4, and only 2 fixes for 2005 SP3. You can draw your own conclusions from that data, particularly if you are still on SQL Server...(read more)
