• Community Day at SOS Kinderdorf Bambous

  Easter is not only an occassion of public holidays but an opportunity to share and celebrate with your neighborhood. The team of IOS Indian Ocean Software Ltd. spent Easter Monday with the children and "mothers" of SOS Children's Village in Bambous. Together with the employees' family members we enjoyed some wonderful hours together. Starting the community day with a common lunch, IOS contributed mainly stationery, educational gifts and games like Scrabble or Sudoku. And of course, a little give-away with chocolate eggs... The kids are aged between 5 and 18 years. They live together with their village mothers in so-called family houses. The SOS Kinderdorf in Bambous is quite new and started their operations back in 2003, with an official inauguration in May 2005. Actually, I'm really happy about this event and I am looking forward to IOS next community activity. • How to upgrade Compiz to 0.9.8 in 12.04?

  For a very long time, I'm experiencing this bug in Compiz. It makes my windows flash, when rotating the desktop cube. None of the animations work properly execpt the Wobbly windows. However the temporary fix I found on the bug page helped me to reduce the effects, but it's not 100% perfect. Now they have totally fixed the bug in Compiz 0.9.8 for Quantal. I really need to get the official fix on my Ubuntu 12.04. Don't the LTS versions get bug fixes? Sometimes my desktop cube/cylinder appears like this : None of this happened in Lucid Lynx :( Thanks for having a look.....

• Who owns code if its written by one person with another person directing [on hold]

  I have an Issue that I need some info on. Basically what Im looking to find out is if I create software,and someone else gives me direction on what they want the software to look like,e.g. an image here,this font of text and it must behave in a certain way. Also some of the code was not developed on my computer and there is no official agreement in place. Not looking to screw anyone over here but need to protect myself if things go sour. Do I own the software or is it jointly owned? Thanks

  Do you follow any any conventions when programming in PowerShell? For example, in scripts which are to be maintained long-term do you: Use the real cmdlet name or alias? Specify the cmdlet parameter name in full or only partially (dir -Recurse versus dir -r) When specifying string arguments for cmdlets do you enclose them in quotes (New-Object 'System.Int32' versus New-Object System.Int32 When writing functions and filters do you specify the types of parameters? Do you write cmdlets in the (official) correct case? For keywords like BEGIN...PROCESS...END do you write them in uppercase only? Thanks for any replies.

• Splitting up revenue among development team members on Apple's app store

  A friend and I have started developing an app to put on Apple's app store. Development is going fine, but thinking ahead, we're trying to come up with an easy way to share any revenue coming from our efforts. The app store allows you to deposit your revenue into a single bank account, but there's no easy way to split revenue among several people. How do (small) dev teams split up revenue on their products, on, and off the app store? As far as I can tell, banks don't offer an easy way to automatically split the balance on an account 50-50 (or any other percentage, for that matter), especially on a regular basis. So how do teams deal with this? We're not incorporated, and we don't have an official business set up. We're considering depositing all the money into one of our accounts and manually transferring half the money to the other person, but this isn't sustainable over long periods of time. Is there a low-cost, sustainable, automatic process for handling these finances?

  I am developing software that uses many calls to a server. On a client side it's a Silverlight application. Almost every time a user clicks on a button in it, it sends 1-5 WCF calls to a server. There can be up to dozen or so users at a time. The server is a database server that serves data to a client. I am an intermediate level developer and am thinking about caching some data and syncing my changes from time to time. It gives an overview of the technology, but it leaves out the C# references and relates StreamInsight to more familiar SQL databases and queries. Check it out. • How do I use apt-get to update to the latest kernel?

  My current kernel is 3.2.0-26 (my main computer) while on another of my Ubuntu computers, with which I didn't fiddle with unofficial updates, it's 3.2.0-30. Yet the Update manager on my main computer doesn't show available kernel updates. It shows other updates though. I suspect is due to the fact that in the past I installed multiple mainline kernel versions (not recommended versions), up to 3.5* series. What I'm after: Either: Fix automatic kernel updates. Or: Learn about a way to check for the latest official ubuntu kernel version and get it manually (I know how to install kernels from debs) What I have already tried: Uninstalled unused kernels including "the generic one without a number" as per http://askubuntu.com/a/103875/29347 and then also https://ubuntugenius.wordpress.com/2011/01/08/ubuntu-cleanup-how-to-remove-all-unused-linux-kernel-headers-images-and-modules/

• Should I put an app I wrote on my résumé even if it has low ratings?

  Last summer I wrote an iPhone app for the Toronto Film Festival. The development was pretty rushed, and the design goals were changed multiple times. In particular, the central film list view controller was redesigned three times in the week before launch. I forgot to update one of my functions to match the changed design, and the app shipped with a serious bug. While the app was fairly popular, this bug crippled the app and it got a lot of poor reviews. I fixed the bug as soon as I got a crash report, but it got stuck in the iTunes review process for the duration of the film festival. Should I put this app on my résumé? The app has poor ratings and most of the reviews mention crashes, but it's also the only work experience I have. Additionally, how should I approach this topic in an interview? • How to set-up a simple subversion workflow

  I am trying to set-up a simple SVN workflow at home. I am new to subversion (and programming) so I have been reading the official PDF documentations but still not sure about how to set-up my repository. I am working mainly with python, bash and rsl (Renderman Shading Language) So I already have a /dev structure on my disk as this: http://imageshack.us/f/708/devstructure.png/ And I have a /site structure that links to my /dev folder: http://imageshack.us/f/651/sitestructure.png/ So obviously starting to use SVN will change this approach that I already have in place. The question is when I am setting-up my SVN repository for the work I do in my /dev folder: Will I set-up a separate repository for each different programming platform? and Where exactly I should be placing my repository? • How does one block unsupported web browsers?

  Web browsers with an end of life no longer receive security updates which not only makes them vulnerable to the end user, but I imagine its not safe for the server's which receive visits by them either. Is it practical to block or enforce and notify the end user that their browser is unsafe and unsupported? If so, how would one achieve that? I don't know of any official or crowd-sourced listing with that information to parse and keep up to date. I'm aware that the practice can be custom built with User Agent parsing and feature detection for HTML5 enabled browsers.

• Ubuntu install and dual Boot with Windows 8 UEFI

  i have Ubuntu 12.04 x64 ISO, i load it on a Fat32 USB. My notebook has a hdd with GPT where i installed Official Win 8 Pro x64 (final versión), I partitioned the whole hdd, previously of win 8 install, and bios is set with UEFI boot. My BIOS notebook doesn't support SECURE UEFI BOOT. So I boot the notebook from USB and the Grub runs OK showing whether to run Ubuntu live or to install, but neither one neither two works, when I choose then the screen shows black and nothing happen, it doesn't start/loads the install program. I've try whether to prepare the usb with unetbootin, or just direct copy/paste the files onto the USB. I also have try WUBI, but neither with success, it launch an error when ending.

• What user-friendly term should I use for a view that lives under a tab in a tab bar app?

  My app uses a tab bar controller. In the user documentation, I'm not sure what name to use for a view that lives under a tab. For example, the app has a Settings tab. In the user documentation, I have a sentence that goes something like this: This threshold can be adjusted in the Settings tab. "Settings tab" is not terribly user-friendly. What would be a better term than "tab"? I've looked though Apple's Human Interface Guideline, but I can't find what would be the official user-friendly term for "view that lives under a tab".

• What has Ubuntu contributed to the Linux Kernel?

  This question is similar to this one: What unique enhancements and features has Ubuntu brought to the Linux Community but in this case it is directed towards what has Ubuntu contributed to the official Linux Kernel. For example, many times I hear about Intel contributing to patches for the Linux Kernel like the RC6 latest patches and any other related to the recent Sandy/Ivy Bridges. In another group, Android did an upstream patch and a lot of ARM patches have also come to the Linux Kernel. I have seeing only a small percent of companies and groups that have contributed to the Linux Kernel (http://kernel.org) but I want to know, since the beginning of Ubuntu till now, what has Ubuntu contributed to the Linux Kernel in regards to any aspect of the kernel. For Kernel information I typically go to http://kernelnewbies.org and http://kernel.org
