    I'm new at the field of computer programming and I chose to learn it at the University, but I have some problems with project management, usually before I write any code I start to plan it on the paper, and when I'm finished I begin to code, but I understood that usualy I write only 20-30 percent from my planning, and I change my code a lot, can somebody recommend me a good book or blog about commong pitfalls and troubles with software planning and management.

  • Why can't the IT industry deliver large, faultless projects quickly as in other industries?

    After watching National Geographic's MegaStructures series, I was surprised how fast large projects are completed. Once the preliminary work (design, specifications, etc.) is done on paper, the realization itself of huge projects take just a few years or sometimes a few months. For example, Airbus A380 "formally launched on Dec. 19, 2000", and "in the Early March, 2005", the aircraft was already tested. The same goes for huge oil tankers, skyscrapers, etc. Comparing this to the delays in software industry, I can't help wondering why most IT projects are so slow, or more precisely, why they cannot be as fast and faultless, at the same scale, given enough people? Projects such as the Airbus A380 present both: Major unforeseen risks: while this is not the first aircraft built, it still pushes the limits if the technology and things which worked well for smaller airliners may not work for the larger one due to physical constraints; in the same way, new technologies are used which were not used yet, because for example they were not available in 1969 when Boeing 747 was done. Risks related to human resources and management in general: people quitting in the middle of the project, inability to reach a person because she's on vacation, ordinary human errors, etc. With those risks, people still achieve projects like those large airliners in a very short period of time, and despite the delivery delays, those projects are still hugely successful and of a high quality. When it comes to software development, the projects are hardly as large and complicated as an airliner (both technically and in terms of management), and have slightly less unforeseen risks from the real world. Still, most IT projects are slow and late, and adding more developers to the project is not a solution (going from a team of ten developer to two thousand will sometimes allow to deliver the project faster, sometimes not, and sometimes will only harm the project and increase the risk of not finishing it at all). Those which are still delivered may often contain a lot of bugs, requiring consecutive service packs and regular updates (imagine "installing updates" on every Airbus A380 twice per week to patch the bugs in the original product and prevent the aircraft from crashing). How can such differences be explained? Is it due exclusively to the fact that software development industry is too young to be able to manage thousands of people on a single project in order to deliver large scale, nearly faultless products very fast?

    Is there an option somewhere in CDT (Juno) where I can set customized "Release" configurations for my projects? All I want to do for now is to be able to create a new C++ project and have by default the -std=c++11 and -std=gnu11options for the compilers and -s for the linker, and maybe a few other optimization flags. It's not a big hassle to do it every time for every new program, but I was just wondering, since I've been creating a lot of small programs to get to know C++ better.

  • GIT Website Deployment

    I am attempting to setup GIT to deploy my project to different locations based on the branch. (I think this is what I want to do anyway). My current setup is this: Local dev machine running Netbeans to make changes. Remote server hosting GIT projects (same server running apache) - 2 subsites exist a test.FQDN.com and a live.FQDN.com What I would like to do is have 1 GIT project (MyProject) and create a new feature branch. Any commits done to the new feature branch would push to test.FQDN.com. Once the features have been tested and then merged into the master branch, it would push to live.FQDN.com. I have looked at GIT's post-receive hooks and was able to use "git checkout -f" command to pull on the test.FQDN.com site however that only pulls the master branch and not the new feature branch. I do not have any funding to use a third party to make this work, and would prefer to stay within GIT but have full root access to the web server if there is a package to install which would help control this. Any suggestions would be great!

    I have project hosted with gitolite on my own server, and I would like to deploy the whole project from gitolite bare repository to apache accessible place, by post-receive hook. WWW_ROOT="/var/www_virt.hosting/domain_name/htdocs/" GIT_WORK_TREE=$WWW_ROOT git checkout -f exec chmod -R 750 $WWW_ROOT exec chown -R www-data:www-data $WWW_ROOT echo "finished" hook can't be finished without any error message. chmod: changing permissions of `/var/www_virt.hosting/domain_name/file_name': Operation not permitted means that git has no enough right to make it. The git source path is /var/lib/gitolite/project.git/, which is owned by gitolite:gitolite And with this permissions redmine (been working under www-data user) can't achieve git repository to fetch all changes The whole project should be placed here: /var/www_virt.hosting/domain_name/htdocs/, which is owned by www-data:www-data. What changes I should do, to work properly post-receive hook in git, and redmine with repository ? what I did, is: # id www-data uid=33(www-data) gid=33(www-data) groups=33(www-data),119(gitolite) # id gitolite uid=110(gitolite) gid=119(gitolite) groups=119(gitolite),33(www-data) does not helped.     First, I want to say that I am not interested in debating about any non-helpful "answers" to my question, with suggestions to putting everything in one assembly, i.e. there is no need for anyone to provide webpages such as the page titled with "Separate Assemblies != Loose Coupling". Now, my question is if it somehow (maybe with some Visual Studio configuration to allow for circular project dependencies?) is possible to use one project/assembly (I am here calling it the "ServiceLocator" assembly) for retrieving concrete implementation classes, (e.g. with StructureMap) which can be referred to from other projects, while it of course is also necessary for the the ServiceLocator itself to refer to other projects with the interfaces and the implementations ? Visual Studio project example, illustrating the kind of dependency structure I am talking about: http://img10.imageshack.us/img10/8838/testingdependencyinject.png Please note in the above picture, the problem is how to let the classes in "ApplicationLayerServiceImplementations" retrieve and instantiate classes that implement the interfaces in "DomainLayerServiceInterfaces". The goal is here to not refer directly to the classes in "DomainLayerServiceImplementations", but rather to try using the project "ServiceLocator" to retrieve such classes, but then the circular dependency problem occurrs...   • Deploying axis2 on glassfish

    I'm trying to deploy Axis2 v1.6.2 war on Glassfish v3.1.2 and I'm having some problems... I need to develop a few web services and since the main app is beeing served on Glassfish I was hoping to deploy axis2 on it so I could test it.   • Code bases for desktop and mobile versions of the same app

    I have written a small Java Swing desktop application. It seems like a natural step to port it to Android since I am interested in learning how to program for that platform. I believe that I can reuse some of my existing code base. (Of course, exactly how much reuse I can get out of it will only be determined as I start coding the Android app.) Currently I am hosting my Java Swing app on Sourceforge.net and use Git for version control. As I start creating the Android app, I am considering two options: Add the Android code to my existing repository, creating separate directories and Java packages for the Android-specific code and resources. Create a new Sourceforge project (or even host a new one) and creating a new Git repository. a. With a new repository, I can simply add the files from my original project that I will reuse. (I don't particularly like this option as it will be difficult to modify both copies of the same file in both repositories.) b. Or I can branch the original repository. This adds the difficulty of merging changes of shared source files. Mostly I am trying to decide between choices 1. and 2b. If I'm going to branch the existing repository, what advantages are there to hosting it as a separate SF project (or even using another OSS hosting service) as opposed to keeping all my source code in the current SF project?

  • Database Connectivity Test with UDL File

    I bounced around between projects a lot last week.  What each project had in common was the need to validate at least one SQL connection.  Whether you have SQL tools like SSMS installed or not, this is a very easy task if you are aware of the UDL (Universal Data Link) files.  Create a new file and name it anything as long as it has the .udl extension. Open the file, choose a provider: Click Next >> or navigate to the Connection Tab to provide connection information.  Once you provide server and login credentials, the database list will populate.  At this point, you know the connection is valid. but go ahead and click the Test Connection button anyway. On the final tab, you can provide extra connection information like Application Name which can come in handy.  The All tab is beneficial if you want to build a valid connection string to include in your own applications.  If you save the file and then open in Notepad, you’ll find that said connection string: Provider=SQLOLEDB.1;Integrated Security=SSPI;Persist Security Info=False;Initial Catalog=master;Data Source=(local);Application Name=TestApp I hope this tip helps save you some time.  How do you test if you don’t have SSMS installed?

  • MSBUILD ClickOnce Error: Deployment and application do not have matching security zones

    We're trying to publish a ClickOnce application through msbuild. We've got it working fine for an installed version of the windows application. However, when we set install to false so that it just runs the app from the web we get the following error when we try to run the application from the URL: "Deployment and application do not have matching security zones" This works fine in IE. We only get the error message in Chrome and FireFox.   • Blackberry Apps - Importing a code-signed jar into an application project

    Hi everyone, I'm working on a library project that Blackberry Java developers can import into their projects. It uses protected RIM APIs which require that it be code-signed, which I have done. But, I can't get my Jar imported and working with a simple helloWorld app. I'm using the eclipse plug-in Blackberry-JDE. Here is what I have tried: First: Building myLibProject with BlackBerry_JDE_PluginFull_1.0.0.67 into a JAR, signing it and importing it into a BlackBerry_JDE_PluginFull_1.0.0.67 application project -- I get a class not found error, while compiling the application project. Next: I imported myLibProject into an BlackBerry_JDE_PluginFull_1.1.1.* library project, built it into a jar, signed it and imported it into a BlackBerry_JDE_PluginFull_1.1.1.* application project. It built this time, but while loading up the simulator to test it I get the following error ( Access violation reading from 0xFFFFFFC ) before the simulator can loadup and it crashs the simulator. Other stuff I've tried: I also tried importing the jar into it's own project and having the HelloWorld app project reference that project. If I include the src in my application project it works fine... But Im looking for a way to deploy this as compiled code. Any Ideas? Or help?
