• Why is Silverlight so unstable? [closed]

  I have never programmed in Silverlight, but I hate it. The reason is that I need it to watch videos on one of the site I watch, but like every other day I need to update the plugin. Why is Silverlight so unstable ??? they just can't get it right and I have to update that plugin all the time. P.S. I'm now thinking of somehow hacking that video stream and bypass the silverlight(so I could just throw it away). P.S. Its not updated like any other FF plugin, because its special and you need to download an exe ... pathethic.

• What is the Policy for Updating grub-pc in LTS?

  After having attempted an SRU request for a small patch to grub-pc for 10.04 LTS that fixes an issue that has left many people with unbootable servers nothing has been done for some time. The patch went through d-i into Maverick and only modifies a small amount of a single *.c file over a year ago. I updated the ticket with a debdiff of the patch and rebuilt the current grub-pc package plus the patch in a PPA and changed the ticket description to be the SRU request format subscribed the "sru" and "sponsors" teams but then nothing happened. Is there some policy against updating grub-pc in LTS that I don't know about? Thanks.

However the temporary fix I found on the bug page helped me to reduce the effects, but it's not 100% perfect. Now they have totally fixed the bug in Compiz 0.9.8 for Quantal. I really need to get the official fix on my Ubuntu 12.04. Don't the LTS versions get bug fixes? • Boot delay and mouse lag at login after Ubuntu 12.04 update

  I am facing these weird problems after updating Ubuntu 12.04 with apt-get update && apt-get upgrade: It takes too much time to come to the Plymouth theme after selecting Ubuntu from the grub menu. Is it possible to correct this? On the login screen, before entering the password, whenever I move the mouse, it is kind of lagging/stuck. Only after entering the password and pressing Enter, it works normally. I think this may be because of the updated kernel. If so, is it possible to downgrade the kernel to the previous one ? If that is not the reason, what can be the problem?

  I'm using Ubuntu 9.1 server edition, I get this error during boot time after I ran sudo apt-get upgrade when checking my kernel version, uname -r returns 2.6.31-14-generic but when i run dpkg -l 'linux-image*' | grep ^.i I cannot find 2.6.31-14 (only contains 2.6.32*) Following the solution in the thread: Kernel Panic - not syncing: VFS: Unable to mount root fs on unknown-block(0,0) doesn't work for me I'm running the commands inside the Rescue mode by booting from the Ubuntu 9.1 Installation Disc Do I need to update my kernel and run update-initramfs + update-grub again? • Upgrade to Ubuntu 13.10 disabled track pad, brightness, sound on Lenovo Z570

  I just upgraded to Ubuntu 13.10 using Ubuntu's software update. It seemed to go all right, however after the system restarted and booted up Ubuntu 13.10, it began experiencing several problems. Some of them were due to expected conflicts with the updated OS, however right now I cannot figure out why certain hardware functions are now "broken" and how to fix them. As far as I can tell, these are the sound (permanently muted), mic (picks up no sound), brightness (set at maximum brightness regardless of using keyboard shortcuts or moving the screen brightness slider) and trackpad (mouse does not move, however plugged-in USB mouse does) This sounds to me like a driver issue, however I cannot figure out how to re-enable my drivers, re-install them, or whatever I have to do here. This did not happen durring my upgrades from 12.04 to 12.10, or 12.10 to 13.04, so I'm at a total loss as to why this happened this time around. My computer is a Lenovo Z570, dual-booting Ubuntu and Windows 7 from GRUB 2. Windows is working fine as far as I can tell.

• What's a standard productive vs total office hours ratio? [migrated]

  So it goes like this: we are keeping track of tasks using Redmine. We log time spent doing tasks, but at the end of the week if we add up all the time spent at those tasks there is no way a person has spent 40hs working. I think that's correct because offices have overhead (reading emails, politics, coffee, distractions). What would be a normal productive time vs total time spent ratio? Other areas in the organization just measure time spent in the office (with the rfid badges that open the door) but we don't like that approach and we are trying to convince Auditing to measure us using redmine instead.

• 12.4 LTS after update fails to login

  An update today (30-11-2012) on 12.4 lead to failure to log in. The system gets through its boot process then presents the logins, on choosing any of these immediately returned to log-in screen with no error. Machine is an AMD FX 64 on an Asus MB using the built-in graphics. If no one knows what this might be, what's the alternative distro to Ubuntu? It's the second time something like this has happened after an update in three months, kudos to the Ubuntu team but I need more reliability. Cheers, thanks to all.

• Package management fails in update-manager with gzip problems and compilation errors. U12.04LTS

  Similar to but not the same as Package management system corrupted. Cannot install or remove packages. U12.04LTS (an earlier problem) with package management system. Followed all of L. D. James suggestions in his answer to no avail. This time as well as the gzip error I am also getting compilation errors. The difference may be due to a lack of compilation in my earlier problem so it may be the same error. The packages concerned are enumerated in the output from update-manager below. Also included below that is the output from apt-get -f install apt-get autoremove gives same output. Tried update without SSL updates - 9 to install and got "Unhandled Error in aptdaemon". Output number 3 below. One at a time - output 4 - is for firefox, first in the list of packages. Falls over at libssl1.0.0 despite deselection of it from update ... • Improve speed of "start menu" in Linux Mint 10 - Ubuntu 10.10 derivative [closed]

  I have a global menu (including application, administration and system tabs) that is taking too much time (for me) to load (about 2.5 seconds). Of course, this time is taken only during first start. After it have loaded, next times are better ( less than 0.2 miliseconds) The menu was taking more time before (about 5 seconds), and I found that was because of the 'Other' part of the menu, that included many applications installed with Wine, so I removed all of them (I didn't need them at all). I have a "normal" knowledge of programming, and I think that the process of starting the menu for the first time has some kind of "cache function", that tries to find which apps are present that need to be placed under menu to be shown to user. But didn't found this function so that I could analyze in details what he is doing (if searching for files under "~/.local/share/applications" or anything else). Also, I found that hitting "Alt-F2" also fires this "cache function", because after waiting it to load, the process of opening the menu took less than 0.2 miliseconds. So, could anyone help me in order to reduce this time? I found on internet that some user could reduce the time by resizing the icons of applications. But found here that most of my icons are already at 25x25 size. Any other idead? Maybe a multiprocess to load it, or include it under startup... don't know. Ps: Sorry if this is an awkward question, but I just do not like waiting for things to happen, and think that this process should be smoother than it's now. Also, thanks in advance!

  I have a PC with a current Ubuntu distribution installed. I've upgraded many times since 5.10. It always went well, however some tools or features were kind of left behind in a unsatisfactory state: grub to grub2 - is it an really necessary to switch the boot loader some time to grub2. Upgrading this scares me abit. I still have ext3 devices - is it worth upgrading to ext4? should I wait for btrfs? hibernation and suspend- it only worked in 5.10, since 6.04 it was messed up. Should I really care? Any chance to repair this myself? Simply by cleanup or hacking config files. It is a desktop PC after all. So energy saving functionality is not really needed. I am using vmware workstation 6.5 and the latest kernel that supports it is 2.6.32. This is my default kernel now, ignoring 2.6.35. Am I missing anything important in the new kernel now?

• Should the number of developers be considered when estimating a task?

  I am pretty inexperienced with working in agile projects but I have tried it a few times and I always run into this problem when estimating a task. Do we bring into the estimate the number of developers that will work on the task? Let me explain: Task A is estimated to one time unit and developer 1 will work on it. Task B is also estimated to one time unit and developer 2 and 3 will work on it together. I.e. if developer 1 begins to work on task A at the same time developer 2 and 3 begins to work on task B they will all finish at the same time according to the estimate. Should the estimate for task B be twice of that for task A or the same? The problem as I see it is that when a task is received and estimated, it is not always possible to know how many people will work on it. And if you assumed that two developers would work on the task for one time unit but it turns out that only one developer will actually do it, this will not automatically mean that that developer will work on it for two time units. Is there any standard practice for this?

The whole process hangs at a purple screen with the mouse cursor right in the middle. At this point, I'm unable to use the mouse and the keyboard. Booting from a 12.04 CD works perfectly, Disk Utility says that all my disks are OK and I can mount my main partition without problems. Something obviously went wrong at the end of the upgrade but I have no idea what. I'd appreciate any pointer. This is the kind of moment where you really think "Next time, I'll separate my /home partition for sure". My machine is an aging but working Dell Inspiron 530 with an Intel Core Duo E2160 processor, 2 GHz of RAM and an ATI Radeon HD3650 video card. Thanks.

• Oneric Aspire One. After latest 11.10 update to Linux 3.0.0-9 boot hangs at staement "Starting Bluetooth"

  I have today updated the version of Linux on Ubuntu on my Acer Aspire One. The boot hangs on the statement "Starting Bluetooth". Help please!! EDIT1: I get the grub menu when I start the netbook and it doesn´t matter which version of linux I choose the resulkt is the same. It gets as far as the Ubuntu spash screen then drops into command line mode then hangs on the line "Starting Bluetooth". I can log in and have tried various forms of the apt-get command to fix the system but with no result. I do not need bluetooth at the moment and so could remove the application if I knew how. (have tried apt-get remove bluez). When I use the command sudo apt-get -f install I get an error message saying "There's not enough space in /var/lib/mysql/" folowed by several other error messages. I have spent some time looking for similar problems and solutions using google but so far got to nothing to help. Thanks EDIT2: I have since discovered when running Knoppix or slitaz from a usb stick that the file managers report the hard disc as having no space. However GPARTED reports it as having 3.69gb. I do recall making space on the hard drive by deleting some old files and emptying trash whilst the update was running; perhaps its related. Any suggestions for how I can recover the apparently lost space from hard disc without losing the data. I have backups of the actual data but do not wnat to lose the applcations configuration. • How should I fix problems with file permissions while restoring from Time Machine?

  While restoring files from a Time Machine backup, I got the error message "The operation can’t be completed because you don’t have permission to access some of the items." because of problems with files in one folder. What's the safest way to deal with this? • How do I set a time in a time_select view helper?

  I have a time_select in which I am trying to set a time value as follows; <%= f.time_select :start_time, :value => (@invoice.start_time ? @invoice.start_time : Time.now) %> This always produces a time selector with the current time rather than the value for @invoice.start_time. @invoice.start_time is in fact a datetime object but this is passed to the time selector just fine if I use <%= f.time_select :start_time %> I guess what I'm really asking is how to use the :value option with the time_select helper. Attempts like the following don't seem to produce the desired result; <%= f.time_select :start_time, :value => (Time.now + 2.hours) %> <%= f.time_select :start_time, :value => "14:30" %>

• Is typeid of type name always evaluated at compile time in c++ ?

  I wanted to check that typeid is evaluated at compile time when used with a type name (ie typeid(int), typeid(std::string)...). To do so, I repeated in a loop the comparison of two typeid calls, and compiled it with optimizations enabled, in order to see if the compiler simplified the loop (by looking at the execution time which is 1us when it simplifies instead of 160ms when it does not). And I get strange results, because sometimes the compiler simplifies the code, and sometimes it does not. About the context, I tracked down the problem to this very simplified example, but my goal is to use typeid with template types (as partial function template specialization is not possible). • Repository/Updating/Upgrading Issue

  The other day I was asked to upgrade from 13.04 to 13.10, at the time I was busy and hit no. I can not upgrade/update at this point, I get (error -11) or a 404 in terminal. In the software updater I get 'failed to download repository information.' I have tried changing my "Download From" setting to "Best" to "Main" and even a few other countries. And in "Other Software" I have tried disabling packages, but doesn't seem to help what so ever. I have tried several of the other commands to try and fix it, such as -fix missing or sudo apt-get update clean. P.S. This has also affected my thunderbird client, I cannot send/receive emails. They have been ignored, or old ones used instead. This is the short version, but looks exactly like this fairly consistently. Sometimes it downloads, sometimes it doesn't. Sometimes it tells me I have an update, and doesn't do anything. If it helps, I have recently had issues trying to install Samba as well, and connecting to the office's NAS Drive. Which works now, but I had to edit /etc/fstab/ and a few other things trying to get that to work as well. I understand it could also be a DNS problem, but this has been going on for a few days, as well as I've already tried changing my DNS server via my computer, however I am not allowed to alter the DNS on our company's router.
