  I have an old laptop running windows xp, I want to replace it with the latest version of ubuntu. The problem is that the laptop does not support boot from usb - I checked the BIOS but the option is not working, I tried http://www.pendrivelinux.com/testing-your-system-for-usb-boot-compatibility/ but with no luck. I also tried burning the iso on a dvd but the burn process keeps failing. What options do I have? Isn't it possible to install ubuntu somehow by downloading it and replacing it with the current OS?

• Big noise from Power Supply Unity Fa? Should I replace it immediately?

  Recently, I started to get a large noise from my PC when switched on. After some time, it disappears. I discovered that the issue is with the Power Supply Unit. Does this mean I have a failing PSU? Will it harm the PC if I didn't replace it immediately? Several years ago I bought a new computer casing which is very weird. Its small and compact. Normally, we have the PSU in the top. But in here, the PSU is on the bottom and right below the hard drive. Recently, two of my hard drives started to show problems. Read errors and bad sectors.   I am trying to make an extension as part of which i want certain words in the web pages to be highlighted. The document.body.innerHTML.replace() replaces the url in the address bar as well. So the moment this code gets exwecuted the page doesnt get loaded properly.. • Could I replace a stock PSU fan with a more quiet one?

  I have a cheap 450W PSU with an exhaust fan at the rear. This fan, however, is very loud. Is it a good idea to replace the stock PSU fan with a quiet fan with similar airflow? The PSU fan is hard-wired to the PCB in the PSU so I was intending on snipping the stock fan wires and sealing the loose ends with electrical tape. I would then connect the new quiet fan to the PWR_FAN socket on the motherboard. Has anyone done this before themselves? Is it a good idea in the first place? Considering if my PSU fails, it could take out a couple of other components too.

• How can I include .pdf files when I publish but not in a search and replace in visual studio?

  More specifically my problem is if I include a pdf in my project and set its build action to content so it gets copied to the server when I publish, is there a way to exclude it from visual studios search and replace feature. Would a post build action be a solution to this? I just don't want anybody to do a global search and replace in my project and mess up the pdfs...   Is search and replace the only way to rename as asp control in the code behind file? I find this extremely annoying, but it is the only way I can find. Scenario: I'll find a variable that needs renaming (Usually to meet naming convention) I'll rename the variable in the aspx/ascx file. I'll have to go in the code behind files and search and replace. I get annoyed Are there any better ways - preferably that would not touch a similarly named variable in another scope in the project. I'm on VS2008 with resharper -- does VS2010 address this perhaps?

• Is it normal for a SAS drive to have a few bad blocks, or should I replace my drive ASAP?

  I have a drive—part of a RAID 1 mirror—that has two bad blocks. Adaptec Storage Manger e-mailed me when it detected the blocks. It shows 4 medium errors for that drive, but state is still “optimal”. This is my first time using Adaptec RAID controllers. I don’t know if an occasional bad block is normal, or if I should immediately replace that drive. Update: The drive failed later the same day! The disk subsystem is: Adaptec 6405 with ZMM (2) Seagate near-line SAS drives (ST31000424SS) The other drive hasn’t reported any bad blocks yet. I am running a consistency check.

  My main drive on laptop keeps filling up so I take a backup on a USB and delete the original files. But then I find myself getting (downloading or getting from someone else) files that I already have backed-up but couldn't recall at the moment. So is there a way I can keep a 0-byte file with the same name as teh backed-up copy so that when I'm asked whether to overwrite the existing file, I can easily choose no knowing I probably have this file already in the backup. EDIT: better yet, replace with a shortcut(.lnk) on the external drive so I can access the files hassle free and not get any errors because of 0-byte files being accidentally opened.

  In this image I have to change red to grey: I know I can just set the saturation to zero, but then the result is a grey that is to dark. I could just change the brightness, but that would also change the left lower part of the picture: Is there an adjustment that only works on the red parts of the image? I can't use a selection, because the setting has to be applied to lots of images. EDIT I tried to use "replace adjustment tool", but that did not work well for the shdows and bright parts of the image, even with the largest fuzzines. I used blue as the replacement colour, to have a better impression of what it does.

  So iOS 6 deprecates presentModalViewController:animated: and dismissModalViewControllerAnimated:, and it replaces them with presentViewController:animated:completion: and dismissViewControllerAnimated:completion:, respectively. I suppose I could use find-replace to update my app, although it would be awkward with the present* methods, since the controller to be presented is different every time. I know I could handle that situation with a regex, but I don't feel comfortable enough with regex to try using it with my 1000+-files-big app. So I'm wondering: Does Xcode have some magic "update deprecated methods" command or something? I mean, I've described my particular situation above, but in general, deprecations come around with every OS release. Is there a better way to update an app than simply to use find-replace?

  Hi! I've developed a plug-in for Firefox, that can read and manipulate the content of the currently opened document. I would like to apply a XLST to the document in case it is XML. I have no problem to read the XML document and apply a XSLT to it in memory, however, I have no idea of how to replace the existing document with the newly created one. Thus, I see two possible scenarios: a) I replace the document with the result of the transformation b) I apply the XSLT directly to the XML All my attempts to realize one of both possible solutions have failed...   Like the title says, I need help creating a batch file to replace "." with "-", however I need to perserve the file extensions and it needs to work through the subfolders. I found another post on here that got the effect I wanted but it also swapped the . in my file extensions. I am a completely ignorant regarding shell script so please be detailed in your response.   I plan to make a replacement for the Windows 7 start menu, and I would like to know if that's even possible. I understand that the start menu is part of explorer.exe but I do not intend to replace explorer.exe. Is it possible to launch the replacement start menu by clicking the native start orb? Is it also possible to launch the replacement by pressing the Windows key or ctrl+esc ? Is the Windows key a macro for ctrl+esc ? or is it two different hotkeys that do the same thing? May I know if there is any software that do any one of these things?

• Computer sometimes doesn't boot after power failure, what should I replace?

  I have a new computer that behaves strange after a power failure. When I switch off the computer it will not boot anymore. Completely unplugging the computer for about an hour cures the issue for the next boot. The internal leds are working I have no idea where to start looking.   I'm trying to convert the first letter of a string to lowercase. I know there's a capitalize method, but I want to accomplish the opposite. This is the code I used: value.substring(0,1).toLowerCase() + value.substring(1) Effective, but feels a bit manual. Are there any other ways to do it? Any better ways? Any Java string functions that do it for you? I was thinking of using something like a replace function, but Java's replace doesn't accept an index as a parameter. You have to pass the actual character/substring. Another way I can think of doing it is something like: value.replaceFirst(value.charAt(0), value.charAt(0).toLowerCase()) Except that replaceFirst expects 2 strings, so the value.charAt(0)s would probably need to be replaced with value.substring(0,1)s. Is this any better? Does it matter? Is there any standard way to do this?

  During the last few days I've gained some information about memory allocators other than the standard malloc(). There are some implementations that seem to be much better than malloc() for applications with many threads. For example it seems that tcmalloc and ptmalloc have better performance. I have a C++ application that uses both malloc and new operators in many places. I thought replacing them with something like ptmalloc may improve its performance. But I wonder how does the new operator act when used in C++ application that runs on Linux? Does it use the standard behavior of malloc or something else? What is the best way to replace the new memory allocator with the old one in the code? Is there any way to override the behavior or new and malloc or do I need to replace all the calls to them one by one?

  I messed up a folder (or the files in that folder) and I want to restore them from a few hours ago. I tried to use Time-Machine to "restore" and it prompts me with where to restore to. • Hard Disk:S.M.A.R.T. Stas BAD, Back up and replace

  I have an laptop top hard drive I was trying to use to my new media computer. The case is small and can accommodate for 2 2.5" drives, no 3.5" drives. I had been using the hard drive as storage hard drive until now. When I go to install Windows on the hard drive first I'm prompted at the bios of: Hard Disk:S.M.A.R.T. Stas BAD, Back up and replace. And then again in the Windows Setup, informing me that the hard drive is bad. So I did a full format of the drive and tried again. Same error. So I took it out and hooked it back up to my other computer via an Sata usb adapter kit (maybe the cause?). The hard drive is recognized fine and when I scanned it for errors by going: right click -> properties -> tools -> error checking It returns that the hard drive is fine. I have tried 3 different SATA cables and multiple jumpers. When I plugged in my 1.5 tb 3.5" drive the computer that gives me the S.M.A.R.T. error on the 2.5" drive, recognizes it with no problems. Any ideas on why this is happening and how I can fix it?

• Chrome and Firefox not able to find some sites after Ubuntu's recent update?

  Loading of revision3.com in Chrome stops and status saying "waiting for static.inplay.tubemogul.com" grooveshark.com in Chrome never loads But wikipedia.org, google.com works just normal same behavior in Firefox too. I use wired DSL connection in Ubuntu 12.04. I guess this started happening after I upgraded the Chrome browser or Flash plugin few days ago from Ubuntu updates through update-manager. Thanks EDIT: Everything works normal in my WinXP. Problem is only in Ubuntu 12.04.
