• What is a easiest way to implement Mail Server in ubuntu and hook in webmail through XAMPP?

  Hi Everyone, I currently have xampp running on my ubuntu server. I tried a variety of things including installing, postfix+dovecot+roundcube+postfixadmin (postfix+dovecot work I think, postfix admin also works, roundcube works and connects to dovecot but i cant create user accounts, or figure out how that works), citadel (it installed, but I have no idea how to make it work with xampp for webmail) and i tried messing with exim and vexim a bit also. In short I feel like this should be a lot easier, and I can't figure it out haha. XAMPP works fine. I got my server running with everything. I was thinking about mercury mail, but I need a webmail solution also. I was thinking about google apps, but 50 bucks a year per user is a steep change from free. Thanks for the help!

  Hi, I am migrating from Windows to OS X and looking for a good way to browse zip, rar etc. archives. Ideally, I need a plugin for Finder which will allow me to open archives as folders. Is there one, or any other suitable solution? Preferably free Update As I understand, most of Mac users are using Path Finder app for file management. It is an awesome program, however surprisingly it also doesn't have such functionality. I guess, the problem is in the way of thinking – my Windows-thinking is not applicable to Mac. • A design for watching IPTV anywhere in the house?

  I'm currently getting TV and internet via IP to my house. The service comes into an ISP-supplied Router (ST585) which is in turn connected to an IPTV box. I need to replace the router, as it's port forwarding seems to be broken, so I was thinking of getting a box with an IGMP proxy. I once mistakenly got a non-IGMP box, with the result that the internet worked, but the IPTV didn't. The trouble is, I have no idea how to set up the IPTV part of the installation. I do have a copy of the ST585 configuration, but it doesn't look anything like the Cisco stuff that I learned about at CCNA. What are the steps necessary to reproduce the IGMP setup? I was thinking of WireSharking the communications on the network, but I suppose I'd need a hub for that? As a bonus, since the packets are coming in with the TV signal, is it possible to mess with the IGMP setup so I can watch TV anywhere in the house?

• securing unpatched websites

  I have a client with a lot (read several thousand) websites in several old cms solutions that are no longer maintained. Now moving all of them to a maintained solution isn't really an option at this point. So I'm thinking about ways to secure the solutions without patching them. The solutions are mostly joomla 1.0/1.5 and wordpress. What I'm thinking is something like this: mod_suexec to lock everyone into their own home directory apparmor to deny any and all file writes by default. (exclude by default, include things like "images" directories). use htaccess to prevent anything in writable directories from being executed. (aka disable php_engine for images/ directory). mysql triggers to check the "users" tables to prevent adding new admins/superadmins. Does this make sense? Is it viable? Am I missing something obvious?

• How do I network this Windows Failover Cluster and MongoDB Replica Set? (diagram inside)

  As you can see, my two Windows Server Failover Cluster (WSFC) nodes have three network interfaces each, which connects them to three different networks : A public network A private network consisting of the WSFC nodes A private network consisting of the WSFC nodes and a machine with the WSFC Quorum Witness File Share Does this network configuration I've planned, make sense? Do I have the "right" number of NICs and networks? I'm thinking the 2nd NIC/network may be unnecessary. My two MongoDB Replica Set nodes also have three network interfaces each - very similar to the previous situation: A public network A private network consisting of the primary and secondary MongoDB Replica Set nodes A private network consisting of the primary, secondary and arbiter MongoDB Replica Set nodes Does this network configuration, make sense?   Hello, Ubuntu 9.10 2.6.31-20-generic I am trying to install some software. When I do the ./configure. I get the following error: checking for Qt... configure: error: Qt (>= Qt 3.0.2) (headers and libraries) not found. Please check your installation! So I install the following package thinking this would solve the problem. sudo apt-get install libqt4-dev I was thinking that the libqt4-dev would install the headers and libraries. • ESXi with non-headless VM

  I'm going to receive a Xeon Server/Workstation soon and I was thinking about installing ESXi to host some server applications that I want (ex: SVN server, Web server, media server, etc). Most of these will be headless VM's. My question is: on top of all these headless VM's, is it possible for ESXi to have another VM that would be non-headless (so that it will output video through the VGA/DVI port)? Or are all VM's within ESXi only accessible through remote connections? I'll be using this non-headless VM like a regular workstation: browsing, development, media, gaming maybe. The other alternative I was thinking about is to install a very lightweight operating system and have the headless VM's running in Virtualbox. If it is possible to have have a non-headless VM, what would be the performance compared to a regular workstation? Noticeable or not when gaming?

  I have been trying to find an answer to this, but all I get is hobbyists trying to connect they linksys's and get some magic out of it. So I am thinking of a way I could combine two 100Mbp Fiber Optics lines into a single connection for our office. I assume it involves some CISCO learning or something like this. Was thinking that I might need to configure some big router to load-balance the NAT'ing in some way. I assume that meny of you have done something similar and maybe someone could share the knowledge or at least provide some tips ?

• Does Exchange have ability to run hidden mailboxes?

  Hello, Title of my question may sound a little bit odd but I was thinking if Exchange 2010 or 2007 or any program that would work in conjunction with Exchange has ability to create this structure: Users having their normal mailboxes connected and using them as everyone would in Outlook 2003/2007/2010. Users having additional mailboxes (from old Exchange 2003) attached but hidden on demand of Administrator. For example administrator could easy disable them just like they never been attached making them invisible to users and everyone else. Would be good if such mailboxes could be easily removed out of system (lets say on external drive) by simple step not manual job for 100 mailboxes. Users without ability to copy/move their mails to outside storage (like a local .pst file)? Do you guys have any suggestions on this? I was thinking maybe using public folders but this seems like overkill and not really suited for this. And please don't ask me why I need this type of security (it's not something I requested).

• About Hard Disk Drive Docks

  I'm thinking of buying a drive dock to put my unused large HDD to use. I will also probably use the dock to backup files and swap the drives regularly. I have a few questions though: Are they noisy? I plan to use them via USB (because I don't think I have eSata connectors), am I gonna want to kill myself every time I backup? (I know it's supposed to be 480 Mbps, but how realistic is this?) Do you recommend a particular model? (I was thinking about this Startech HDD dock) Thank you

• Is it possible to install a bootable version of Windows 7 onto a flash stick?

  I'm thinking of changing to a new laptop that only comes with a 256gb SSD. It's not tons of room, but not inadequate either. One thing I have on my HD at the moment that takes up a lot of room but is rarely used is a partition with a bootable version of Windows 7 (I'm on a mac). Would it be possible to install a bootable copy of Windows 7 onto a flash drive? I was thinking of using a 64gb Sandisk Cruzer USB 2.0, so that when I need to dip into Windows every now and again I could just plug in the flash drive.

• Can I run my OS from a DVD?

  I'm thinking of ways to get around the high cost of hard drives lately. I was thinking an optical jukebox would be interesting (though more expensive than just buying a hard drive), then thought I've heard of OS's run from DVD so why not boot from a Blue-ray drive. I think a smaller OS like a linux flavor would work. I'd like to know if there's a way I could burn Windows 7 to DVD for this use. Just curious. Anyone know if this is possible? Thanks, Mac

• What do I need to use an XBOX 360 with my PC monitor and speakers?

  I've been thinking about getting an XBOX 360, mostly for games on XBLA or some exlusive titles, since they're relatively cheap now to get used. But I'm a student and live in a small apartment that has no TV, and no place to put a new TV (money to buy one wouldn't be a problem), so I've been thinking to use the console with my PC monitor and my speakers. My monitor only has HDMI and VGA input (no direct DVI), so I'm guessing I somehow need to split the audio and video signals coming from the XBox (or does the XBox have a direct 720p VGA output + external connectors for my speakers?). What do I need to make this happen?

• Netbook recomendations for a developer

  I am thinking about getting a netbook for a secondary laptop. Ideally it would mainly be used for surfing/email/travel, but I would like it to be good enough to be able to run Visual Studio for when I am at conferences and the like. I as thinking it would be nice to be able to put a 16-32GB SSD in it, as well as 2GB of memory. Do you have any recomendations? Will a netbook even suffice, or should I upgrade to a small-form laptop? Edit: I don't need to be able to build software on it. It would just be nice to occasionally be able to try out new tools, APIs, or what have you without getting frustrated due to limited computing power.

• Amazon EC2 as load balanced/failover solution

As a failover/load balanced solution, I'm thinking to use Amazon EC2+EBS. The files can be rsync and mysql can be setup as master-master replication When the load is high, I can up the machine, given sometime to "sync" and load balanced the traffic there. is it do-able? any link I can read more on this?

• Can I use Cygwin as a replacement for Ubuntu, for bash script testing?

  Next wednesday i'm having an exam on Operating Systems. In this exam there will also be a part bash-scripting. The teacher itself will test the scripts in a Virtual Machine running Ubuntu. Myself, however, I'm having serious troubles with running the latest Ubuntu (14.04 LTS) on a Virtual Machine (there are troubles with gnome running very slow). So I'm thinking about using Cygwin, which is doing the job great for another course. The teacher already confirmed I can use that, but I'm thinking he doesn't know it at all. I've already tested the scripts we made in class and they're all running without errors. But I'm quite sure there are some things I have to mind on. My question: would you use Cygwin as a replacement for the Ubuntu VM? Or should I stick it with the VM (maybe by using a different config/platform).

• Disabling the shell of user "daemon" (/bin/false)

  on a Linux system there are lot's of users by default: daemon, bin, sys, games, etc. According to my /etc/passwd most of these users have a shell assigned (/bin/sh) which seems some kind of insecure to me. My naive thinking would say: Only give those users a shell that may login to the server. Is my thinking wrong? If not completely wrong: Can I disable the shell for "daemon" and "www-data" without having side effects (e.g. the system wont start or the Apache PHP cannot excute system calls)? The ram could do with another 4GB, for which I am thinking of replacing the 2x2GB for 2x4GB of the same type. My video card is struggling with the latest releases, so vitally should I ditch the video card and go for something newer (ATI 7850, GTX 660?) or try and get another 5850 for crossfire support? Bearing in mind 5850's are sort of hard to come buy now as they are not stocked in shops usually, which means they have to be bought second hand.

• Custom edit box - how to do it?

  I'd like to create a new text editor with some non-standard capabilities for the edit box where you would normally type your code (and do syntax highlighting). Since I'd like to have complete control over this I was thinking how should I proceed.. my target is primarily linux and I was thinking to use GTK+ as GUI toolkit. Since I'm a newbie I'm not sure how custom controls are drawn/rendered. Should I consider using openGL to draw a control from scratch? That doesn't sound right to be honest but I have no idea on how to do it.. The "nonstandard capabilities" would include drawing stuff on the control (shapes and boxes) at any position, being able to write into multiple areas.. all stuff you can't normally do with an edit box. Question: How should I create a GTK+ nonstandard GUI control like an edit box that has the following capabilities: edit text, select text, delete text, draw message boxes on top of it, draw images inside it (under and/or on top of the text), insert text into multiple places at the same time? Should I subclass an edit box control or should I "render" an entirely new one with openGL or such? I'm still in the design phase (I even need to identify the frameworks I should use) and I've taken a look at the Chromium project (GTK+). I haven't found anything that suited my problem

• Some SharePoint NDA Information

  Ad:: SharePoint 2007 Training in .NET 3.5 technologies (more information). Many years ago, at the last to last to last MVP summit, Microsoft was kind enough to share with us what they were thinking wayyyyyyyyyyyy ahead! I specially remember John Durant talking about the specific enhancements planned for SharePoint 2010 development experience. If you haven’t seen John Durant talking on stage, the guy has more enthusiasm than tiger woods in Amsterdam! The energy of his presentations is simply amazing. So, I pulled out my phone, and I snapped a picture! And, I emailed that picture to everyone in the MVP land, and Microsoft land, saying “We have evidence”, i.e. here are the promises that were made, and dammit we’ll see by the time you release SP2010 how many of these do you actually release. Here is the picture ladies and gentlemen -     It’s a good karate chop action shot isn’t it? Of course, we were all immediately warned not to share any of this seriously strictly NDA information at the time. Well, now that the information is out in the world, I can finally share now, this small tidbit of how far ahead Microsoft is thinking in their plans. • Accessing Server-Side Data from Client Script: Accessing JSON Data From an ASP.NET Page Using jQuery

  When building a web application, we must decide how and when the browser will communicate with the web server. The ASP.NET WebForms model greatly simplifies web development by providing a straightforward mechanism for exchanging data between the browser and the server. With WebForms, each ASP.NET page's rendered output includes a <form> element that performs a postback to the same page whenever a Button control within the form is clicked, or whenever the user modifies a control whose AutoPostBack property is set to True. On postback, the server sends the entire contents of the web page back to the browser, which then displays this new content. With WebForms we don't need to spend much time or effort thinking about how or when the browser will communicate with the server or how that returned information will be processed by the browser. It just works. While this approach certainly works and has its advantages, it's not without its drawbacks. The primary concern with postback forms is that they require a large amount of information to be exchanged between the browser and the server. Specifically, the browser sends back all of its form fields (including hidden ones, like view state, which may be quite large) and then the server sends back the entire contents of the web page. Granted, there are scenarios where this large quantity of data needs to be exchanged, but in many cases we can use techniques that exchange much less information. However, these techniques necessitate spending more time and effort thinking about how and when to have the browser communicate with the server and intelligently deciding on what information needs to be exchanged. This article, the first in a multi-part series, examines different techniques for accessing server-side data from a browser using client-side script. Throughout this series we will explore alternative ways to expose data on the server so that it can be accessed from the browser using script; we will also examine various tools for communicating with the server from JavaScript, including jQuery and the ASP.NET AJAX library. • TFS Shipping Cadence

  Brian Harry has formally announced a change to the TFS shipping cadence from the traditional 2-3 years to production cycle to a more agile and refreshing minimum once in a 3 weeks cycle! The change didn’t happen over night, it was a gradual process which was greatly influenced by moving TFS to the cloud. The thinking started with trying to figure out what the team wanted.  Like people often do, the team started with what they knew and tried to evolve from there.  The team spent a few months thinking through “What if we do major releases every year and minor releases every 6 months?”,  “Major releases every 6 months, patches once a month?”, “What if we do quarterly releases – can we get the release cycle going that fast?”, etc.  The team also spent time debating what constitutes a major release VS a minor release. How much churn are customers willing to tolerate?  The team finally concluded… “When a change this big is necessary – forget where you are and just ask where you want to be and then ask what it would take to get there.” Going forward you will see, Team Foundation Service updates every 3 weeks Visual Studio Client updates quarterly (Limited to VS 2012 for now) Team Foundation Server updates more frequent than every 2 years but details still being worked out.  The team will definitely deliver one this fall. • Dutch ACEs SOA Partner Community Award Celebration

  When you win you need to celebrate. This was the line of thinking when I found out that I was part of a group that won the Oracle SOA Community Country Award. Well – thinking about a party is one thing, preparing it and finally having the small party is something completely different. It starts with finding a date that would be suitable for the majority of invited people. As you can imagine the SOA ACEs and ACE Directors have a busy life, that takes them places. Alongside that they are engaged with customers who want to squeeze every bit of knowledge out of them. So everybody is pretty busy (that’s what makes you an ACE). After some deliberation (and checks of international Oracle events, Trip-it, blogs and tweets) a date was chosen. Meeting on a Friday evening for some drinks is probably not a Dutch-only activity. But as some of the ACEs are self-employed they miss the companies around them to organize such events. Come the day a turn-out of almost 50% was great – although I expected some more folks . This was mainly due to some illness and work overload. Luckily the mini-party got going, (alcoholic) beverages were consumed, food was appreciated, a decent picture was made (see below) and all had a good chat and hopefully a good time.
