  From Eric Lippert's Blog: Here’s a crazy-seeming but honest-to-goodness real customer scenario that got reported to me recently. There are three DLLs involved, Alpha.DLL, Bravo.DLL and Charlie.DLL. The classes in each are: public class Alpha // In Alpha.DLL {   public virtual void M()   {     Console.WriteLine("Alpha");   } } public class Bravo: Alpha // In Bravo.DLL { } public class Charlie : Bravo // In Charlie.DLL {   public override void M()   {     Console.WriteLine("Charlie");     base.M();   } } Perfectly sensible. You call M on an instance of Charlie and it says “Charlie / Alpha”. Now the vendor who supplies Bravo.DLL ships a new version which has this code: public class Bravo: Alpha {   public override void M()   {     Console.WriteLine("Bravo");     base.M();   } } The question is: what happens if you call Charlie.M without recompiling Charlie.DLL, but you are loading the new version of Bravo.DLL? The customer was quite surprised that the output is still “Charlie / Alpha”, not “Charlie / Bravo / Alpha”. • SOA Checklist

  In a recent meeting, the customer brought up a valid question: “How do I know if a problem/system is a good candidate for using SOA (vs. using old but trusted techniques).  I put this checklist together.  If you can answer yes to 2 or more of these, it might well be a good candidate.  This is V1, and I will likely update it over time.  Comments (that are not spam or sales pitches) appreciated. Part of the conversation was also around the fact that SOA has two faces to it; one is around the obvious reuse possibilities. The other, that often gets forgotten, is that SOA provides goodness in terms of simplifying integration even where opportunities to reuse those integrations are small; at least the integrations are standards-based and more flexible.  I did not write a lot of verbiage about each of them, for example “Business Process” implies that there is a set of step-wise actions that need to take place in a coordinated fashion that include integrating with systems (and sometimes people for approvals and other human-only actions) in the process.

  My client site is built in Silverstripe, there is a news page, and it allows people to leave comments. Unfortunately we've got loads of spam emails. I'm new to this, is there any way we can disable the comment field by default? How do I do it? Alternatively is there easy way for me to install a spam protection? Thanks heaps. Sam Update - Because this is someone else's code, I just realised that they have some sort of spam protection already, so we are trying to disable comments now. • Blank New Tab Quick-Fix for Google Chrome

  If you have other browsers that you use set to “about:blank” for new tabs then you probably feel rather frustrated with Google Chrome’s default New Tab Page. The Blank New Tab extension is the perfect solution to that problem. Before Unless you have a “speed dial/special page” extension installed you are stuck with the default new tab page in Chrome every single time you open a new tab. What if you do not like the default new tab page or “speed dial/special page” setups? After If you are someone who prefers to have a blank page as a new tab then you will love this extension. Once you have it installed you can click to your heart’s content on the “New Tab Button” and see nothing but blank goodness. Sometimes less is more… Note: There are no options to bother with. Conclusion If you prefer a blank page when opening a new tab then the Blank New Tab extension is just what you have been waiting for. • Architect Day Artifacts

  In the last eight days the Oracle Technology Network Architect Day tour has stopped in Dallas, Anaheim (Disneyland, to be precise) , and at Oracle HQ in Redwood Shores,  CA. I was on-scene for the Dallas event, where I pulled a TMZ-style ambush on Chris Benedict from the Oracle Enterprise Solutions Group to capture this short video.     The other presenters escaped. • BUILD 2013&ndash;Day 2 Summary

  Originally posted on: http://geekswithblogs.net/tmurphy/archive/2013/06/28/build-2013ndashday-2-summary.aspx Day 1 rocked.  So how could they top that?  By having more goodies to give away!  During the keynote they announced that attendees would get one year of Office 365, 100 GB of SkyDrive and one year of Adobe Cloud Service.  Overall they key note was long with more information shot at you than you could possibly absorb.  They went about 20 minutes over time which made me think that they could have split it to a 3rd keynote and given us a better idea on some of these topics and perhaps addressed the one open question that was floating around Twitter.  That is, what is going to happen with XBox development.  It sounded like there was a quick side mention of that, but I missed it. The rest of the day was packed with great sessions full of Windows 8, Azure and Windows Phone goodness.  I had planned on attending Scott Hanselman’s talk, but they had so many people this they had to push to an overflow room.  Stay tuned from session summaries later. The day was topped off by an attendee party across from the San Francisco Giant’s ball park.  It was kind of quirky and and fun.  They set it up on one of the piers in the bay and had food served by food trucks.  You would be surprised how good the food was.  Add in some pool tables, fooseball, video games, a DJ, a comedian/musician and plenty of spirits and it was a great way to end day 2. del.icio.us Tags: BUILD 2013

• Enjoy Seamless Reading at Twitter in Chrome

  Twitter can be a lot of fun but having to constantly use the More Button to view a large number of tweets is frustrating. All that you need to be rid of that frustration is the More Tweets! extension for Google Chrome. Before Here it is…the classic “More Button”. If you are only interested in viewing a few tweets on occasion then it is not a problem. But if you are looking at a large number of tweets on a daily basis then it can be very frustrating. Notice the last tweet from TinyHacker shown here… After After installing the extension the only thing that you will need to do is refresh your Twitter page if you had it open before-hand. Now there will be a seamless connection from page to page when you are reading through tweets. You can see the TinyHacker tweet from above followed oh so nicely by tweets from the second page…this is definitely an improvement. For those who may be curious if you are quick enough with your mouse you can see what the “automated connection process” looks like. Conclusion If you are tired of constantly clicking the “More Button” and just want to read tweets without interruption then you will be very satisfied after adding this extension to your browser. • wynapse.com down last night, SC tonight

  In an industry segment that nobody is ever 'asleep', I suppose no time is a good time to take SQL Server down for upgrades, and I had forgotten that my host was going to be doing that. Last night about 9pm (Arizona), in the middle of working on a blog post, things started going wonky and I finally realized everything was ok except for SQL Server. I turned in a ticket on it and was reminded about the maintenance schedule... guess I file those away in memory and just assume they'll happen while I'm asleep :) So, looking at the schedule, it appears that SQL Server for SilverlightCream is going to be down tonight. Minimum is 9-12pm Arizona time... mileage and time may vary. Since all the posts are run through SC to get the Skim count, having SQL down sucks, but I'd rather we got maintenance than have to react to a crash because of something that wasn't maintained. I'll try to get the next 'Cream post out early so that the bulk of folks can dig through it prior to the outage. Meanwhile, for those of you in Phoenix, tonight is our Phoenix Silverlight User Group April meeting, and Joel Neubeck is going to be giving us the run-through on Windows Phone 7! We're not as advanced as those MVP rock-stars in California like Victor Gaudioso who streams his user group meeting, so you'll just have to show up for the goodness! • Identity in .NET 4.5&ndash;Part 1: Status Quo (Beta 1)

  .NET 4.5 is a big release for claims-based identity. WIF becomes part of the base class library and structural classes like Claim, ClaimsPrincipal and ClaimsIdentity even go straight into mscorlib. You will be able to access all WIF functionality now from prominent namespaces like ‘System.Security.Claims’ and ‘System.IdentityModel’ (yay!). But it is more than simply merging assemblies; in fact claims are now a first class citizen in the whole .NET Framework. All built-in identity classes, like FormsIdentity for ASP.NET and WindowsIdentity now derive from ClaimsIdentity. Likewise all built-in principal classes like GenericPrincipal and WindowsPrincipal derive from ClaimsPrincipal. In other words, the moment you compile your .NET application against 4.5,  you are claims-based. That’s a big (and excellent) change.   While the classes are designed in a way that you won’t “feel” a difference by default, having the power of claims under the hood (and by default) will change the way how to design security features with the new .NET framework. I am currently doing a number of proof of concepts and will write about that in the future. There are a number of nice “little” features, like FindAll(), FindFirst(), HasClaim() methods on both ClaimsIdentity and ClaimsPrincipal. This makes querying claims much more streamlined. I also had to smile when I saw ClaimsPrincipal.Current (have a look at the code yourself) ;) With all the goodness also comes a number of breaking changes. I will write about that, too. In addition Vittorio announced just today the beta availability of a new wizard/configuration tool that makes it easier to do common things like federating with an IdP or creating a test STS. Go get the Beta and the tools and start writing claims-enabled applications! Interesting times ahead!
