  I'm particularly looking for input from managers of ongoing C++ projects: Have you already adopted C++0x? If so, what has your experience been like? If you haven't adopted C++0x yet, are you planning to? If so, what is your timeline (in rough terms)? Are there any obstacles that are holding you back from adopting C++0x? Perhaps you are waiting for your favourite compiler or IDE to catch up? For managers of open source projects: are you afraid that adopting C++0x will mean less developers who are willing/able to contribute because they don't know the new features? Or, on the other hand, do you think most developers have been eagerly awaiting C++0x, and and will jump at the opportunity to use it? Do you think C++0x is stable enough to be adopted by a large project?

• Proportional width of elements in LinearLayout

  I have a horizontal LinearLayout and in it I have EditText and Spinner elements. Which attributes I need to adjust so I would get proportional widths: I want EditText to take 3/5 and Spinner - 2/5 of all available width? My code looks like this: <LinearLayout android:layout_height="wrap_content" android:layout_width="fill_parent" android:id="@+id/LinearLayout01"> <EditText android:layout_height="wrap_content" android:id="@+id/EditText01" android:singleLine="true"> </EditText> <Spinner android:layout_height="wrap_content" android:id="@+id/Spinner01" android:layout_width="wrap_content"> </Spinner> </LinearLayout> I tried setting android:layout_weight, but somehow it does not look "stable" enough for me - when EditText has no text - everything looks fine, but as soon as I start entering text into it - it starts expanding and Spinner shrinking accordingly...

• Is it possible to set a parameterized build or pass an environment variable via a hudson build trigger?

  I'd like to use hudson to trigger a "promotion" of a build. The build would be a simple script that just copies a release candidate installer file from one location to another. (development dir to release/stable dir) Our build server is not on the public internet, but I want to be able to send an email or a text message or an IM with the build number to hudson, which will parse the build number and then do the copy/move. In looking at the jabber/IM plugin it does not look like this is possible (the parameter part) Has anyone solved this in some way? Should I use some other mechanism? I would prefer not to have to do the manual steps each time (SCP/FTP, etc) - I just want any QA team member to be able to trigger the build server to do the promotion.

• Is concatenating with an empty string to do a string conversion really that bad?

  Let's say I have two char variables, and later on I want to concatenate them into a string. This is how I would do it: char c1, c2; // ... String s = "" + c1 + c2; I've seen people who say that the "" + "trick" is "ugly", etc, and that you should use String.valueOf or Character.toString instead. I prefer this construct because: I prefer using language feature instead of API call if possible In general, isn't the language usually more stable than the API? If language feature only hides API call, then even stronger reason to prefer it! More abstract! Hiding is good! I like that the c1 and c2 are visually on the same level String.valueOf(c1) + c2 suggests something is special about c1 It's shorter. Is there really a good argument why String.valueOf or Character.toString is preferrable to "" +? Trivia: in java.lang.AssertionError, the following line appears 7 times, each with a different type: this("" + detailMessage);

• What are the new features in Java 7

  What is the most official Java 7 feature list? I find very little useful information regarding this on the official JDK 7 site. Apart from that I can only find blogs with people summarizing "some" of the new features. However, some of these blog entries are old and some of them claim that these features "may or may not" be included in Java 7. Can anyone provide a list of features that will definitely be included in Java 7? I would also very much like to know the estimated release date. Will it be backwards compatible with my existing Java EE 6 stuff. That is, will I be able to switch seamlessly using EJBs, JPA2, Glassfish 3 and so on. The feature I am mostly interested in is Closures, so I'll happily switch to Java 7 as soon as a stable release comes out. Thanks!

• Socket left in TIME_WAIT after file transfer via netcat

  Using Copying by NetCat I am trying to copy files throught network by NetCat. From console it work pretty well. First I run listening netcat on the destination machine and after I run sending on source machine. The problem is it's doen't work from script from the source machine: ssh -f user@$desthost 'nc -l 1234 | tar xvf - /dev/null &' #listening on destination host tar cv /tmp/file | nc $desthost 1234 #sending to destination host I saw that after running port 1234 is still was open and status of the socket was TIME_WAIT. If you know what's the problem, please, help me out. And by the way, after copying how can I validate that the content is identical? Thanks! Addendum: I found one very strange thing, the same implementation with screen on destination work works, but not stable, sometimes it doesn't copy a file. ssh user@$desthost screen -dm -S test 'nc -l 1234 | tar xvf - ' #listening on destination host Maybe there is an issue with timeout?

• Continuous integration with multiple branch development

  In the project that I'm working on, we are using SVN with 'Stable Trunk' strategy. What that means is that for each bug that is found, QA opens a bug ticket and assigns it to a developer. Then, a developer fixes that bug and checks it in a branch (off trunk, let's call this the bug branch) and that branch will only contain fixes for that particular bug ticket When we decided to do a release, for each bug fixes that we want to release to the customer, a developer will merge all the fixes from several bug branch to trunk and proceed with the normal QA cycle. The problem is that we use trunk as the codebase for our CI job (Hudson, specifically), and therefore, for all commits to the bug branch, it will miss the daily build until it gets merged to trunk when we decided to release the new version of the software. Obviously, that defeats the purpose of having CI. What is the proper way to fix this issue?

• Is node.js ready for production use?

  Starting a new project. It's basically a blogging/commenting system. We're considering node.js as the back end server. Is node.js ready for this sort of thing or is it too early and experimental? We need HTTPS and gzip compression - perhaps a front end nginx server could provide this? What's missing from node.js that would make developing a web app difficult? From a production ready perspective, we're wondering if it is stable enough for building a commercial app on top of. Thanks

• Using GitHub with another Bug-tracker?

  I am involved in this project, Pinta, and we are currently using GitHub for our development. We all love Git and GitHub and want to keep using it. However, now the project is getting stable and involved, and it's time we started using a more capable bug tracking system than GitHub's simple issue tracker. We also want to start doing GetText based translations. We are looking at Launchpad which has both a nice bug tracker and translation manager, but we want to keep using GitHub for development. I'm worried that these will not integrate well, and it will make development harder. Has anyone used GitHub with another bug tracking system and had any success? Any recommendations?

• Finding latest release links on website for C++ Application

  Basically I have written a game plugin that will allow server admins to update their administration tools from within game rather than having to go download it and install it. The releases are updated regularly, and the beta versions are nightly builds. I am trying to find a way to grab the links from the website, but I cannot think of anyway to do this off of the top of my head. • Parasing HTML to find specific links (Without Keywords)

  I posted about this sort of earlier, but I am not sure how to post back to my original question as I can only comment or answer my own question. Anyways, I need to get 4 links from a website, the latest stable build links for windows and linux, and the latest development build links for windows and linux (4 links total) within my C++ application. I can download the page (http://www.sourcemod.net/snapshots.php) with LibCURL which is already implemented in the project, but after that I am not sure. I was looking at parsers, but I can't think of how I am going to discern link from link. Obviously using a parser I could get the first link from each table, but this does not seem efficient and would only provide me with the links to windows builds. It looks like the links I need will be in the fourth in both tables, but I am just very familiar with a good way to go about this, so any help would be appreciated.

  I was always sure (don't know why) that it's better to add annotations to variables, but while browsing the Hibernate doc http://docs.jboss.org/hibernate/stable/annotations/reference/en/html_single/#entity-hibspec-collection I noticed they tend to annotate the methods. So should I put my annotations before methods, like this: @Entity public class Flight implements Serializable { private long id; @Id @GeneratedValue public long getId() { return id; } public void setId(long id) { this.id = id; } } Or is it better to do it like this: @Entity public class Flight implements Serializable { @Id @GeneratedValue private long id; public long getId() { return id; } public void setId(long id) { this.id = id; } } Or maybe there's no difference?

• For anyone with free time: Trying to learn how to replace PHP with Python, failing terribly.

  I want give web development using Python a shot, but I'm failing hard. I don't even know if I CAN run Python. The webpage for my web host says it supports all kinds of stuff, including Python. I've never touched anything CGI related and this does not appear to be a noob friendly area. • Webservice for serial port devices

  Hi I want to create a remote webservice for an application that is now avaliable only localy. This application controlls three devices (each is controlled separately) connected on serial port. The problem is that I don't know how to take care of passing back information that a device return requested data. For example - I send move command to the motion device (which is very slow and can take a minute or more). Can I just set a big timeout on the client side (and server side) and return for example a true/false if operation is completed or is this a bad idea? Is SOAP with big timeouts ok? And the other question is if Mono on Linux (Ubuntu 9.10, Mono 2.4) is stable enought for making a web service or should I chose Java or some other language? I'm open for recommendations.   I'm kinda new to Dojo toolkit. There are certain issues which I would like to get enlightened (I googled but I didn't get any appropriate & satisfying answers) I have a dojo.js(Perhaps the uncompressed dojo.js downloaded) in my already running application (Developed by another software developer). How to find out which version of dojo.js he has downloaded and is being used right now? (Its not commented. I checked) a) While I'm trying to run my application in IE-8 (Opening a pop-up on click of a button), I get error which is pointing me to this line of code if(dojo.isIE&&window.location.protocol==="file:") Note: Its working fine in IE6 but the issue is with IE8 & to be even more specific the JS error is displayed only for the first time when I'm clicking the button. b) Is it true that dojo 1.3 & above is the best & stable release for IE8?

• Memory leak in chrome.extension.sendRequest()

  Chrome Version : 9.0.597.19 (Build 68937) beta & current stable I have simplified my code as far as possible. I ended up with the attached extension: content.js (content script run on every site): setInterval(function() { chrome.extension.sendRequest({ }, function(response) { //Do nothing }); }, 1); background.js (background page script): chrome.extension.onRequest.addListener(function(request, sender, sendResponse) { sendResponse({ }); }); When you install this extension, you can observe it eating up memory extremely fast (I got 90MB in 1 min with 9 tabs opened). You can speed up the process by opening more tabs. Of course, the extension I am actually developing does not send requests every millisecond, but only every 3 seconds. This just slows it down, though. A user who has run it in the background for a long time with many tabs opened has reported 100MB of memory usage, and I can reproduce it to a less extreme extent, too.

• Git: Make one branch exactly like another

  I am relatively new to Git, and I'm still not very comfortable with it. Right now, I'm looking for the command/options/magic that can make the current branch look like another branch; that is, to merge them, but when a conflict arises, to always choose the difference in the branch that is being merged into the current one. My situation is thus; I have an stable(ish) application on the "master" branch. I also have another branch, called "feature". I basically want to make changes/additions/deletions to feature until I like the new feature I'm working on. Once I feel it is ready, I want to make the master branch look identical to the feature branch. I know this probably isn't a best practice, but as I said, I'm new to Git. I plan on learning how to do more complicated things in the future, but for now, this is all I need. Thanks, SO!

  I am developing a Phonegap app with JQuery mobile with their latest stable versinos (Phonegap 3 and JQM 1.3.2) for Android platform. My app downloads feeds from Google Feeds API and saves in a SQLite database. But whenever it starts fetching and saving data from the web (the no of feeds that download at a time can be many), the other functionality such as button events halt and freeze. To be precise the a button that opens and closes a panel does not either open or close the panel until the data fetching stops. How am I supposed to solve this issue? The performance has dropped drastically due to this issue in my app.

I tried using tortise svn some got reverted some I got conflicts and I resolved my self blindly so build is breaking.   I have a small .NET WinForms application, and couple of linux servers, DEV and CL1,CL2..CLN (DEV is development server and CL* are servers which belons to our clients, they are in private networks and it's a kind of production servers) I want an update mechanism so that (1) i develop a new version and publish it to a DEV (2) users of DEV-server install latest version from DEV (3) users of CL2 (employees of client2) install stable version from CL-2 directly (4) application checks for updates using server it was installed from (so, if it was installed from CL-2, it should check CL-2 for updates) (5) i should be able to propogate the update to a selected CL-server (using just file copy & maybe sed; not republishing), if i want that (and if i don't, that CL-server will have an old version until manually i update it) I tried to use clickonce, but looks like it meets only first two requirements. What should i do?

  When I wrote JEE apps, I used JBoss Datasources to control which databases the deployment used. E.g. the dev versions would use a throwaway hibernate db, the ref and ops would use stable MySQL deployments. I also used MBeans to configure various other services and rules. Now that I'm using Spring, I'd like the same functionality - deploy the same code, but with different configuration. Crucially, I'd also like Unit Tests to still run with stub services. My question is this - is there a way, in JBoss, to inject configuration with files which live outside of the WAR/EAR, and also include these files in test resources.

• Performance optimization for mssql: decrease stored procedures execution time or unload the server?

  Hello everybody! We have a web service which provides search over hotels. There is a problem with performance: a single request to the service takes around 5000 ms. Almost all of the time is spent in database by executing storing procedures. During the request our server (mssql2008) consumes ~90% of the processor time. When 2 requests are made in parallel the average time grows and is around 7000 ms. When number of request is increasing, the average time of response is increasing as well. We have 20-30 requests per minute. Which kind of optimization is the best in this case having in mind that the goal is to provide stable response time for the service: 1) Try to decrease the stored procedures execution time 2) Try to find the way how to unload the server It is interesting to hear from people who deal with booking sites.
