Ultra-lightweight web browser?

Are there any good super-lightweight graphical web browsers out there? I'd like to be able to browse the web on an old PC, but the mainstream crop of browsers is just too heavy, and I don't want to resort to something like Lynx. There must be something decent out there that'll fit in 16 or 32MB of RAM comfortably. 100% standards compliance isn't necessary, but I'd like something that supports the most widely used parts of CSS and JavaScript. The goal is to get 98% of sites usable in a nice, graphical format.

Our company claims that the DLP system can even monitor the contents of HTTPS traffic, how is this possible?

There is software installed on all client machines for DLP (Data Loss Prevention) and HIPAA compliance. Supposedly it can read HTTPS data clearly. I always thought that between the browser and the server, this was encrypted entirely. How can software sneak in and grab this data from the browser prior to it is encrypted or after it is decrypted? I am just curious as to how this could be possible. I would think that a browser wouldn't be considered very secure if this was possible.

Emailing Service: To or Bcc?

I'm busy coding a reusable e-mail service for my company. The e-mail service will be doing quite a few things via injection through the strategy pattern (such as handling e-mail send rate throttling, switching between Smtp and AmazonSES or Google AppEngine for e-mail clients when daily quotas are exceeded, send statistics tracking (mostly because it is neccessary in order to stay within quotas) to name a few). Because e-mail sending will need to be throttled and other limitations exist (ex. max recipient quota on AmazonSES limiting recipients to 50 per send), the e-mails typically need to be broken up. From your experience, would it be better to send bulk (multiple recipients per e-mail) or a single e-mail per recipient? The implications of the above would be to send to a 1000 recipients, with a limit of 50 per send, you would send 20 e-mails using BCC in a newsletter scenario. When sending an e-mail per recipient, it would send 1000 e-mails. E-mail sending is asynchronous (due to inherit latency when sending, it's typically only possible to send 5 e-mails per second unless you are using multiple client asynchronously). Best practices for FQDN for standalone domain (is a two part domain.tld okay?)

I've searched quite a bit and can't seem to find a straight, modern answer on this. If I am hosting a domain, say, mydomain.com, on a machine which is going to solely be used for that domain, and there are no subdomains, is there a real, practical reason besides compliance to create an arbitrary hostname (i.e. myhost) just in order to have a three-part FQDN (myhost.mydomain.com) to satisfy some sort of RFC or convention that's expected. This seems to make a lot of undue complexities from my perspective, and I'm not sure if there's an advantage to this or if it's just a hold-over from a time where all web resources came from a subdomains such as www and ftp which may need to scale to separate machines. I don't use www on my domain, either, which is ill-advised for all I know from an administrators perspective (though removing it is the norm from a designer's perspective)...

Is MySQL better than PostgreSQL in something?

I know the question sounds provocative but it really isn't. I'm lately finding MySQL limiting in a lot of areas and liking PostgreSQL more and more. It scales a lot better and it respects the SQL standards a lot more than MySQL. I'm still a newbie in the PostgreSQL world though and since I'm willing to move away from MySQL for all my future projects, what I want to know is: is there any particular feature of MySQL that it is done better (as in more performant or more user friendly etc..) than in PostgreSQL? I'm wondering what I'm gonna miss from MySQL. I already found that the AUTO_INCREMENT fields in MySQL are more handy than SEQUENCES in PostgreSQL and the deployment in windows was problematic in the past (not a problem anymore. never a problem for me). What else? Thanks.

I have been a fulltime student recently working on graduate work to complete a graduate degree. While continuing my studies I have maintained my computer hobby. However, recently my computer hobby has been threatening to turn into a full-fledged side business. Because I am starting to have people come to me for computer help who I have never met before (who generally heard word-of-mouth from other people whose computers I looked at) I am seriously considering putting my conditions for working on a computer into writing (for potential damage control and perhaps liability reasons). Are there any standards for this that I should reference? Should responsibility be waived for times when the computer is left in my care or any time I look at a machine? Any advice you can provide here would be appreciated. What other lessons have you learned that I should be aware of in relation to helping people while continuing my studies as a hobby? Thank you in advance.

What are the "software" requirements for a 3D video?

Today, looking for the technical explanations about MPEG4, I saw that it can implement the VRML rendering for a 3D video. This makes me wondering about the "software" requirements to make or to see a 3D video. I mean, assuming that I have all the "hardware" requirements(3D monitor, VGA, 3D-camera, etc), what should I need to make and see 3D videos looking over the "software" side? Must I need to make it on MPEG4 instead MPEG1 or MPEG2 because of the VRML support? May I need a specifc 3D codec to open and see 3D videos?? Until today, I believed that a 3D video was just a regular/ordinary video composed of 2 "overlapping layers". PS: This is the first time I'm researching about technical explanations/references about MPEG standards and 3D videos, any help or basic explanations will help.

Server Room Protocols/Server Room Management

Hi, I'm new to this site but have found the articles and feedback very useful. We have a Server Room which our Organisation owns and controls, yet there are several thirs party companies that have open access to this room. As such, we have been asked to put together a protocol paper that stipulates the standards that we expect to be adhered to when working in this room. Other than the monitoring of UPS loads, Air Cooling functionality, alarm systems etc, does any one have any guidance on the kind of issues that need to be documented to make this protocol all encompassing? I'm thinking along the lines of not leaving cardboard or other combustibles in the room, not having food and drink in the room, not altering the fabric of the building by drilling through walls etc? IE8 Compatibility View issues

I have the IE7 emulater tag in a jsp layout. But when I bring up the page, it defaults to the IE8 view until the user clicks the Compatibility View button. I don't want the user to have to click the button to launch compatibility mode. Is there a way to force IE7 Emulation on pageLoad? I'd even like to disable the button (or any potential to toggle between IE8 standard mode/IE7 view). Thanks! //sw Update: Now the button seems to have disappeared entirely, but still defaults to IE8 standards. Where did it go?! The toolbar context menu has it as selected, but the tools dropdown menu has it grayed out. For my purposes, it is unacceptable for the user to have to use the developer tools or even click the button to trigger emulation, but I don't know why the button disappeared anyway...

Crazy VM clock drift

This is taken from an Ubuntu 10.10 VM running on ESX5: Nov 3 21:58:50 server1 ntpd[21169]: adjusting local clock by 31.187370s Nov 3 22:02:36 server1 ntpd[21169]: adjusting local clock by 31.159808s Nov 3 22:05:18 server1 ntpd[21169]: adjusting local clock by 31.067579s Nov 3 22:07:59 server1 ntpd[21169]: adjusting local clock by 30.952187s Nov 3 22:11:38 server1 ntpd[21169]: adjusting local clock by 30.890147s According to the VMWare KB no kernel tweaks should be needed for Ubuntu 10.10 to maintain time to their standards. What's especially odd is the drift seems fairly consistent. Any help appreciated on this one!

Can I build a laptop from scratch?

I've been looking at this as the same approach as building a desktop computer from scratch but I've never really come across the core things. Can I buy a laptop "case"? Can I buy a motherboard/PSU to fit that case? Can I choose a CPU fan? What are my battery options? Obviously taking into consideration the case. Why isn't this as easy as putting together a desktop computer? Shouldn't there be standards such as ATX? If they exist, what are they?

DICOM Image viewer for Windows

In case you were wondering DICOM (Digital Imaging and Communications in Medicine) is a set of standards in medical imaging. I have a CT result saved conforming to that standard and I want to be able to see the scans. The directory structure looks like this: 123456 (folder) |- 2342345 (file) |- 2342346 (file) |- 2342347 (file) |- [...] (more files) DICOMDIR (file) A Google search showed a lot of results for DICOM viewer and I even tried one but it only shows the thumbnails of the images. Could anyone recommend a good viewer so I don't have to try them all? Maybe with export functionality. Thank you, Alin

Page won't load on IE9 unless developer tools are started first

One of my pages (with very extensive javascript) won't load on IE9. It loads ok in Mozilla, Chrome, Safari and Opera. If IE9 Developer tools are running it loads fine. If I load IE9, load the developer tools (F12) then kill the developer tools it still loads fine. If developer tools are running then sometimes (but not always) the first message in the console is: HTML1113: Document mode restart from Quirks to IE9 Standards Doctype is: <!DOCTYPE html PUBLIC "-//W3C//DTD XHTML 1.0 Transitional//EN" "http://www.w3.org/TR/xhtml1/DTD/xhtml1-transitional.dtd"> <html xmlns="http://www.w3.org/1999/xhtml"> If I change doctype to and remove the xmlns nothing changes. I'm stumped. Any suggestions appreciated.

Are you supposed to type '6' with the left hand or the right hand?

A few weeks ago, I did a Google Images search for keyboard finger charts to see which fingers I'm supposed to be using to type which keys. According to the charts, '6' is supposed to be typed with the right hand: (as shown on en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Typing) However, today I spotted a split keyboard in a store with the '6' on the left side of the split. Indeed, an image search for split keyboards indicates that this is the norm: (as shown on en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Microsoft_Natural_keyboard) When doing touch typing "correctly", should I go with the finger charts (type 6 with my right hand), or should I go with the split keyboards (type 6 with my left hand)? <troll> Is this just another example of Microsoft not following the standards? </troll>

bootstraping a SparkleShare project

I just tried SparkleShare as a possible replacement for dropbox/insynch. It looks quite promising, being based on open standards. I was wondering if someone has gone though the process of "bootstraping" a SparkleShare project. I have the initial files I would like to keep synchronized on two clients and the server (as plain files). I was wondering if there would be a way to set a project up so that I would not need to download/upload all the files back and forth (as they are readily available on all three systems). I guess this would involve some git kung-fu I am far from mastering. Thanks!

Getting Excel to handle CRLF's correctly in CSV

I am creating CSV files to be opened in Excel. The rows are separated by CRLF and that's fine, but some of the input data contains CRLF data in it as well. Per the usual standards, I surround them with quotes, but Excel doesn't seem to recognize the CR character and puts a little box with a question mark in it instead. I can strip the CR's out of the CSV file, but it seems like an unnecessary step. Is there an easy way to get Excel to recognize a CRLF inside a row of a CSV file?

Database for heat tolerances of various cables?

Is there any kind of unified database of heat tolerances for networking cables? I've been setting up a number of home/small office networks lately and as a mostly-amateur I could really use some information on what is safe to run behind a radiator, next to a steam pipe, etc. The question I'm up against at the moment is: Can I run normal RJ11 phone line cable (from DSL modem to phone jack) behind a steam radiator without risking a fire? Unlike cat5, I could not find published standards for these, so I'm turning to experts with more experience. This is a cut-rate show. Do I go out and buy more cabling, and if so which, or use the spare that I have?

Windows and domain suffix addition

I have a DNS domain and host it on my own server. My desktop PC (Windows XP) is configured to have mydomain.tld as its primary DNS suffix. Now, when the system tries to resolve any domain - stackoverflow.com, for example - it tries with the suffix added first, even if the name has periods in it. In other words, it tries stackoverflow.com.mydomain.tld. before stackoverflow.com.. Is this valid according to DNS standards and common sense? Is there anything I can do to prevent it, other than removing the prefix completely? (I still want it to be appended to single-component hostnames. Currently I have two prefixes . and mydomain.tld. configured, but it isn't very fast when resolving foohost.)

Is there Linux Live USB that works with Snow Leopard macbook pro from 2010 april

Hello, I was searching for a long time a Linux Live USB that I can boot my macbook pro from. Is there such distro so I can install it on Snow Leopard or Windows 7? UPDATE I've found this: "isohybrid" CD images (..) are special in that as well as the normal CD-based ISO9660 filesystem they also contain a valid-looking DOS-style partition table. Thus, if you simply copy one of these images raw to a USB stick a normal PC BIOS will boot the image directly. (...) Finally: I'd like to add support into xorriso for creating the nasty HFS hybrid images that are needed for booting Macs. The code that does this in cdrkit is probably some of the worst that I've ever worked with, and I'd like to get away from it. Run a service after networking is ready on Ubuntu?

I'm trying to start a service that depends on networking being started, whenever the computer is rebooted. I have a few questions: Is this easily possible from an /etc/init.d script? I have tried creating a script here (conforming to the standards), but I'm really doubtful that it's even running on boot, let alone working. When I test it manually, it works. I've seen the new Upstart service, but as far as how that actually works, I'm completely in the dark. How can I make a script that runs on boot which runs after networking has been started? If I could run it after connected to wireless network, even better :)
