• How to install VMware tools for Ubuntu 11.04 hosted on VMware ESXi?

  I'm running Vmware ESX 4.1 and I have a development VM that I recently upgraded from Ubuntu 10.04 to 11.04. Then I tried to re-install VMware Tools and some of the modules gave me an error and would not compile. As a result I'm having problems with backing up this virtual machine now and I suspect VMware tools is the reason. I installed latest patches for VMware host, that included an update to VMware Tools (v8.3.7 build-381511) but I'm still getting the same error. • Ubuntu web server 11.10 ftp/server issue

  I was wondering if I could get some help with FTP, atleast I'm pretty sure it has to do with FTP. Although it could have to do with something else, I'm not 100% sure.. Now, for fare warning, I'm no ubuntu dominator, I'm pretty newb. Anyway, I've attempted to build a webserver to to test php and what not for a site I'm building. Now everything works, the php, the sql etc. By the way, I built this in VMware, so it's virtual, over a network, so I can access stuff from anywhere. I'm in a college right now so yeah. The one problem I have is this. I go into the terminal, and do ifconfig to find my IP. I get it and go to a browser on a different machine and type that IP in. I get the "index of/" page, where I can browse the website I'm making. I can click through folders and what not. I can click on things and they open up. Now lets say I'm working on my desktop and open up an FTP and drag and drop something into there, go to the IP in the browser again and try to open it. I either get "Server error The website encountered an error while retrieving http://my_server_ip/phpinfo.php. It may be down for maintenance or configured incorrectly. Here are some suggestions: Reload this webpage later." or "Forbidden You don't have permission to access /html.html on this server." But, lets say I make it on the server itself, and try, bam, magic it works. I'm sure I set the permissions to let everyone open and view the files, but maybe I didn't? I'm not sure, and this is where I was hoping I could get some help. By the way, I followed a tutorial on changing the www folder (apache) from /var/www to home/"user"/www. I can't recall how I did that, but it's there and my ftp goes to the home/"user"/www folder. But yeah, any and all help is appreciated. Like I said, I'm really new to this, but I do enjoy attempting to make these servers and learning how they work, so it's not like making this webserver is a project for a class, It's just assisting me in testing stuff for another class and possibly other websites later on down the road. • Issues with Server 2012 using DFSR running on Hyper-V 2012

  We have a number of Server 2012 systems, all of which run virtualised on Hyper-V 2012 server. We are having problems with two such virtual instances, both of which are used as file servers, whereby they occasionally stop responding to requests to serve files to clients. After logging on to the server, attempts to shut it down gracefully fail (no error, it just fails to acknowledge a shutdown request). Recovery is a case of power cycling the server(s) from the Hyper-V console. These two servers don't server a large number of users (one serves no more than 6 users, and the other serves around 20 users), they are in the same domain, but on different physical hardware (and at different sites). They don't lock up at the same time. They both use DFSR to replicate a fairly large amount of data between themselves (200GB) over ADSL connections, this is working fine, and we have been using DFSR to do this on the previous two generations of server OS we have used (Server 2008 R2 and Server 2003 - both of which were physical installs however). Today, when one of the servers crashed, I noticed an entry in the event log, which looked similar to the following: Log Name: Application Source: ESENT Date: 27/11/2012 10:25:55 Event ID: 533 Task Category: General Level: Warning Keywords: Classic User: N/A Computer: HAL-FS-01.example.com Description: DFSRs (1500) \\.\E:\System Volume Information\DFSR\database_C8CC_101_CC00_EC0E\ dfsr.db: A request to write to the file "\\.\E:\System Volume Information\ DFSR\database_C8CC_101_CC00_EC0E\fsr.log" at offset 4423680 (0x0000000000438000) for 4096 (0x00001000) bytes has not completed for 36 second(s). This problem is likely due to faulty hardware. Please contact your hardware vendor for further assistance diagnosing the problem. When the server started up again, I went to find the event log entry to investigate further and found that the event log entry was no longer there (I assume it was in memory but failed to write to disk before the server was powered off, for the reason mentioned in the message). I found the above message by searching back further in the event log. Both of these virtual servers have their E: volumes fully allocated as opposed to dynamically expanding, and there are no other issues on any of the other virtual servers (which include server 2012, server 2008 R2 and Ubuntu 12.04 x64). There are no signs of IO, memory or CPU starvation on the host systems. I've used performance counters on the affected virtual servers to monitor memory usage (including non paged pool usage), as well as CPU and network utilisation, and none of these show any signs of trouble when the issue arises. I would have thought our configuration isn't that uncommon, so I'm wondering if anyone else has seen this, and managed to resolve the problem?

  Hello, We have 2 servers let's call them server A and server B. Server B is never used unless something goes wrong with server A. I need a system that can replicate server A to server B but this doesn't have to be continues. This only has to be done once every day (let's say at 1 am or so). Also, it's not necessary to automatically take over the server, this can be done manually. On this server IIS is running and sql 2008 so all webapplications and databases must be synced/replicated. • SQL Server 2008 Remote Access

  I'm having problems connecting to my SQL Server 2008 database from my computer. I have enabled remote connections as described in this answer (http://serverfault.com/questions/7798/how-to-enable-remote-connections-for-sql-server-2008). And I have added the ports listed on the microsoft support page to our Cisco Asa firewall and I'm still unable to connect. The error I'm getting from the SQL Management Studio is: A network-related or instance-specific error occurred while establishing a connection to SQL Server. The server was not found or was not accessible. Verify that the instance name is correct and that SQL Server is configured to allow remote connections. (provider: TCP Provider, error: 0 - A connection attempt failed because the connected party did not properly respond after a period of time, or established connection failed because connected host has failed to respond.) (Microsoft SQL Server, Error: 10060) Once again, I have double and triple checked that remote connections are enabled under the database properties and that TCP is enabled on the configuration page. I've added tcp ports 135, 1433, 1434, 2382, 2383, and 4022 as well as udp 1434 to the firewall. I've also checked to make sure that 1433 is the static port that is set in the tcp section of the database server configuration. The ports should be configured correctly in the firewall since http/https and rdp are all working and the sql server ports are setup the same way. What am I missing here? Any help you could offer would be greatly appreciated. Edit: I can connect to the server via TCP on the internal network. The servers are colocated in a datacenter and I can connect from my production box to my development box and vice versa. To me that indicates a firewall issue, but I've no idea what else to open. I've even tried allowing all tcp ports to that server without success.

• Windows 2003 IIS FTP Server Migration w/ User Accounts

  I'm trying to figure out the best way to migrate an FTP server from old hardware to new hardware. The server is on a domain, but not all the users setup on the server (to use FTP) are domain accounts, some are local to the server. For example, I have users both ways: domain\username machinename\username The new machine name will be different. So I need to copy all the files with permissions in tact from the old server to the new server. Then I need to convert all the user accounts from the old server to the new server. Then I need to change the file permissions so that they are no longer oldserver\username but newserver\username. Can this be accomplished all with CALCS? Is there an easy way that perhaps I'm missing?

• Why can't I get Apache2 mod_dumpio working under Lucid Lynx Ubuntu?

  I'm trying to capture all of the traffic to and from an Apache2 web server for troubleshooting purposes, so I did the following to try to set mod_dumpio up properly: Used a2enmod to enable mod_dumpio Changed LogLevel to "debug" in apache2.config Added "DumpIOInput On", "DumpIOOutput On" and "DumpIOLogLevel debug" to apache2.config Issued "/etc/init.d/apache2 restart" to restart Apache Issued "apache2ctl -t -D DUMP_MODULES" to make sure mod_dumpio was loaded I'm watching /var/log/apache2/error.log, but not seeing much there, and certainly not a dump of all input and output. Can anyone help?

• Multiple PXE server same subnet

  I've been struggling with this for some time. I have a few test machines that boot from the network, they receive the boot data from the DHCP server, this tells them who is the boot server where is the file they'll boot etc. However, I need to add a second PXE server in the same subnet (create another Vlan is not an option right now). I read somewhere that I may be able to send certain parameters to certain machines based on their MAC address (this way choosing what computers boot from what server) however I cannot find how to do this, anyone knows how? this will be my solution but I cannot find the answer. My DHCP is a windows server 2003 I have 2 servers running custom flavors of Linux server as TFTP servers. Some machines use data to boot from server 1, and the others must bu able to boot from server 2. Thx

  What I am trying to do is quite complex, so I figured I'd throw it out to a wider audience to see if anyone can find a flaw. What I am trying to do (as an MSP/VAR) is design a solution that will give multiple companies a session based remote desktop (companies that need to be kept completely seperate), using only a handful of servers. This is how I imagine it at the moment: CORE SERVER - Server 2012 Datacentre (All below are HyperV servers) Server1: Cloud-DC01 (Active Directory Domain Services for mycloud.local) Server2: Cloud-EX01 (Exchange Server 2010 running multi tenant mode) Server3: Cloud-SG01 (Remote Desktop Gateway) CORE SERVER 2 - Server 2012 Datacentre (All below are HyperV servers) Server1: Cloud-DC02 (Active Directory Domain Services for mycloud.local) Server2: Cloud-TS01 (Remote Desktop Session Host for Company A) Server3: Cloud-TS02 (Remote Desktop Session Host for Company B) Server4: Cloud-TS03 (Remote Desktop Session Host for Company C) What I thought about doing was setting up each Organisation in their own OU (perhaps creating their OU structure based on the Excahnge 2010 tenant OU structure so the accounts are linked). Each company would get a Remote Desktop Session Host server that would also serve as a file server. This server would be seperated from the rest on its own range. The server Cloud-SG01 would have access to all these networks and route the traffic to the appropriate network when a client connects and authenticated so they are pushed onto the correct server (Based on session collections in 2012). I won't lie this is something I have come up with quite quickly so there may well be something gapingly obvious that I am missing. Any feedback would be appreciated.

  I want a Server 2008R2 (x64) to act as DNLA-Server. I remember I tried this with a Server 2008 about two years ago and this was only possible with some ugly hacks. Is it on Server 2008R2 now possible to enable Windows MediaPlayer Media-Sharing by installing the desktop experience packet? Has someone already experience on this. Or is there another possibility to allow media sharing on a Server 2008R2 "the designated way"? I remember that on Server 2008 the way was to install the old MediaConnect-Pacakge. But I hesitate to install such a component on a server. Anciently I installed VirtualServer with Vista and enabled the media server there in, but this seems to me somewhat overkill for such a simple task.

• Can't Install php5-dev on Ubuntu 12.04 running OpenVZ

  I'm trying to fetch the php apc package using pecl and running into a problem that I believe may be caused by OpenVZ. To do so I need php5-dev. When I try to install it via apt-get, I get this: php5-dev : Depends: libssl-dev but it is not going to be installed Depends: libtool (>= 2.2) but it is not going to be installed As I try to manually install dependencies (without success), I believe I've identified libc6-dev as the culprit. libc6-dev : Depends: libc6 (= 2.15-0ubuntu10.2) but 2.15-0ubuntu10+openvz0 is to be installed I have libc6 installed on the system. • Troubleshoot IIS 6 and Intermittent SQL Server Connectivity Loss

  I am not a System Administrator, but I am temporarily trying to fill that role. I have 2 Windows 2003 Servers. 1 server has my Microsoft SQL Database (SQL Server 2005) and the other is the web server with IIS6. Intermittently (once every month or 2) the web server loses connectivity to the database server for a period of roughly 10 minutes. It normally regains connectivity without intervention. The website is set up to send me an email when there is a problem connecting to the database. Within the email, I get the error code: [Microsoft][ODBC SQL Server Driver][TCP/IP Sockets]SQL Server does not exist or access denied. I am able to access both servers during the outage. I can go to my SQL server and open up SQL server without any issues. I have looked in the EventViewer and do not see anything. The last time that I had this issue, I stopped IIS6 and started it. After doing this, the issue was resolved. This leads me to believe that it is an issue with IIS and not SQL server. How can I begin troubleshooting?

• VMware + SQL Server - sqlserver.exe not using both CPU cores

  Hi, I am working on a virtual machine that runs SQL Server Express (as part of Sage Line 50 Manufacturing). The details are as follows: Physical Server (host machine) - Intel Xeon Quad Core 2.1GHz - 4GB RAM - VMDK image stored on RAID-5 500GB SATA drives (7200RPM) - Running Ubuntu 10.04 Server 64 bit - VMware Server 2 Virtual Machine - Windows Small Business Server 2003 - Allocated 2 vCPU's and 2GB RAM - Using 100GB pre-allocated flat VMDK file The problem I have is that there is process that runs in SQL Server that is CPU intensive. On the old physical server that we migrated to the virtual machine from, this would utilise both CPU cores so the sqlserver.exe process would be running 100% on each of the CPU cores. On the virtual machine, it only seems to use one of the two CPU cores, meaning that the process is much slower to run. Question Is there a way to force SQL Server (sqlserver.exe process) to use both of the CPU cores, and distribute it's load between them? Is this a VMware setting that needs changing to allow processes to use both cores?

  I've installed Ubuntu Server under Virtualbox just to get a nice little shell. I've also installed the VirtualBox "Guest Additions" and set "Shared Clipboard: Bidirectional". I still can't seem to get any copy-paste working. Am I missing something here? I've installed gpm which gives mouse support in server mode (no X), and allows copy-paste using the mouse, but still the VirtualBox integration doesn't work.

• Licensing SQL Server 2012 Reporting Services w/ SharePoint 2010

  Here's my situation: I have 1 VM that is running SharePoint 2010 SP1. I have a different physical server that is running SQL Server 2008 R2 that hosts all the configuration and content database for SharePoint. Now, we want to start providing BI capabilities to our users with SharePoint and SQL Server. With it's new features, 2012 is the obvious way to go. To support this, I'm looking to build a new VM that will have SQL Server 2012 installed w/ Analysis services and SSIS, which will be the platform that gets our data from our Oracle databases, puts it in a warehouse hosted by the SQL 2012 instance, and is put into cubes. What's getting me about the platform is licensing for Reporting Services and PowerPivot. My plan was to install SSRS and PowerPivot on the current SharePoint server. But my understanding of the licensing means that instead of the new SQL server being licensed, I'd have to license both new server, and the SharePoint server. Conversely, I could install SharePoint onto the SQL server, and only have to get a second SP license, but then I'd have the added complexity of deploying a separated application server, and combines my data and application servers. Is my licensing understanding correct, or can I have SSRS and PowerPivot installed separately without incurring additional licensing costs?

• How do I find the cause for a huge difference in performance between two identical Ubuntu servers?

  I am running two Dell R410 servers in the same rack of a data center. Both have the same hardware configuration, run Ubuntu 10.4, have the same packages installed and run the same Java web servers. No other load. One of them is 20-30% faster than the other, very consistently. I used dstat to figure out, if there are more context switches, IO, swapping or anything, but I see no reason for the difference. With the same workload, (no swapping, virtually no IO), the cpu usage and load is higher on one server. So the difference appears to be mainly CPU bound, but while a simple cpu benchmark using sysbench (with all other load turned off) did yield a difference, it was only 6%. So maybe it is not only CPU but also memory performance. I tried to figure out if the BIOS settings differ in some parameter, did a dump using dmidecode, but that yielded no difference. I compared /proc/cpuinfo, no difference. I compared the output of cpufreq-info, no difference. I am lost. What can I do, to figure out, what is going on?

For various reasons, we want to run this on-site in our office rather than hosting it externally. It's been a while since I last had to set up my own servers so I thought I would tap into the collective wisdom of serverfault! My broad requirements are: Budget $30-50k, with an aim to get as much compute capacity as possible for that budget 64-bit servers suitable to run Ubuntu Linux + Java Some relatively standalone rack that can be installed in secure office space Fast/low latency network connections between the servers, but don't really care about connectivity to the outside world Storage capacity shared between the servers - they don't necessarily need their own storage providing they can be booted from a common image Downtime can be tolerated (since the calculations are run in batch mode) The software itself is fault-tolerant, so there is no need for extra resiliency in the server setup (cheap replaceable commodity parts will be fine in general) Given these requirements what kind of setup would you recommend and why?

  I had to run some tests on a WebCenter Portal application deployed in a cluster. I've got a development VM with WebCenter PS4 (this also works on PS5) and I was trying to figure out how could I easily add a new managed server to my single-node domain, and make it a cluster. Creating the machine and cluster are a piece of cake, you can do it pretty quick through WLS Console. Now, you'd guess that using the clone option on WLS Console would do the magic of cloning an existing instance, right? Well, it does, but all you get is an "empty" managed server: with no target libraries.  It was a good surprise to find that WebCenter provides a way of cloning an existing WebCenter Portal managed server through a simple WLST command: cloneWebCenterManagedServer  This is a screenshot of my starting point. I want to clone WC_CustomPortal managed server: These are the steps to clone my WC_CustomPortal managed server: 1. In the command line, invoke WLST. It should be on <ORACLE_HOME_for_component>/common/bin/wlst.sh. In my case, it is ./product/Middleware/WebCenterPortal/common/bin/wlst.sh 2. Connect to the Admin Server:  connect ('<wls_admin_username>','<password>','t3://<server>:<port>') 3.
