• Virtual PC - Display Issue with Ubuntu Server

  Hi Everyone, I just did a clean install of Ubuntu Server 9.04 in Virtual PC on the Windows 7 RC, and it seems to be having a bit of an issue with the virtual machine's display adapter. I've tried setting a VGA flag in the GRUB configuration to no avail. This is a guess, but I think it has something to do with the color console mode that gets enabled by default at boot time. The system starts booting just fine (i.e. the console looks "normal" when I'm asked to enter an LVM passphrase, etc.), but then the display goes wonky after a few seconds and I end up with this. Typing commands in bash works just fine: it's not like the system is frozen or anything, I just can't see anything that I type. The console looks exactly the way it does in the image below.

• Accessing SQL Server in Windows XP Mode Virtual Pc

  I have a laptop running 64bit Windows 7 Ultimate. I created a Virtual PC using Microsoft XP Mode. I've installed SQL Server 2000 on the Virtual Machine. I have SQL Server 2008 R2 installed on the Windows 7 machine (laptop). I can browse to the SQL 2000 instance (it sees it), but I cannot successfully connect using either Windows or SQL Server Authentication. I don't get an error, the attempt just times out. I have the Windows XP Mode Firewall turned off, and there doesn't appear to be anything in the Event logs either. Any ideas how I can query the XP Mode SQL Server from the Windows 7 machine?

  We have a RHEL 5 Linux server with a few Windows XP clients. We provide web development in PHP. Now my developers as for common local PHP server for keep their projects in same place. Currently the proxy server and Samba sharing are running on the RHEL 5 server. I installed httpd, PHP and MySQL in the server. And I would like to configure virtual hosting too for LAN. What I want do for it? We have 2 Ethernet ports in the server, 1 for local connections and another one for Internet. Internet is provided by an ADSL provider. (192.168.0.0 series for ADSL modem connection and 10.1.1.0 for the LAN connection. If I want to use virtual hosting, do I need to setup local DNS server? My requirements are: setup PHP with MySQL server for local clients with multiple hosting, without disturbing proxy and Samba.

  Hi I have a working courier-imap server on my Debian Etch private server ; users are virtual, authentificatin goes through mysql. It's been working good for years. I would like to share an imap folder between 2 users. I thought I would just have to do something like this : cd path/to/mailusers/dir ln -s path/to/user1/maildir/.folder_to_be_synched path/to/user2/maildir/ After I entered the command, I found that user2 saw a new folder in its imap client, but the folder appeared empty. It is not a permission problem because all the virtual users have the same permissions on the file system. Any idea what I could do ? thanks

  I just started playing with VirtualBox to check out different versions of Linux. I was wondering if it would be possible (and recommended) to set up a single virtual machine with multiple partitions - one for each separate version of Linux, one for swap memory, and one fully shared /home partition? Still new to Linux, but I've read this is a good way to partition so you can share common applications between Linux installations, however I think everything I've read is pertaining to literal partitions and not virtual machines.

  Hello, I have a very large DB used mostly for analytics. The performance overall is very sluggish. I just noticed that when running the query below, the amount of virtual memory used greatly exceeds the amount of physical memory available. Currently, physical memory is 10GB (10238 MB) whereas the virtual memory returns significantly more - 8388607 MB. That seems really wrong, but I'm at a bit of a loss on how to proceed.   I am going to host a few small sites on VPS, and each of them are going to run my own custom PHP scripts. I am fairly certain that they are secure (did everything in the book, plus some of which is not in the book) to make sure they can't be exploited. But just to be safe I want to know how I could secure each of the virtual hosts so that they can't escape from there virtual host (if a hacker uploaded a shell they could not go above the www folder a legitimate user can't do in ftp no matter how many times they click ..) folder on Debian and Apache.

The server admin assures me that my virtual machine is running and assigned the new IP address. I have checked the firewalls and had the remote admin restart the VM instance. Neither of these fixed the problem. How do I troubleshoot a remote server which I am unable to SSH to? I'm actually even unable to ping the remote IP (connection timed out).

  I'm trying to set up virtual hosts on my VPS (centos). I set both domain nameservers to fns1.dnspark.net and fns2.dnspark.net and set an A record there for each domain pointing to my IP address 50.16.219.8. Both domains are currently resolving to the first virtual host. What am I doing wrong? Thanks!   Hi, I have a CMS application that manages multiple websites, today whenever i change the codebehind of one of these websites - i have to rebuild the dll for all websites, deploy it - this disconnects all current sessions and is really bad. The iis is configured to listen to all domain requests, if the request is to one of the websites' domain , the application rewrites it, or example, if someone requests for www.example.com, and example.com is configured in the application to be website 12, it is rewritten to www.example.com/websites/12/default.aspx. This is done for all websites. We want to seperate the dlls of the websites from each other, and from the main CMS, we have a virtual directory to each websites, but when trying to rewrite to it, we discover that IIS support this (we get an "Could not load type '_12._Default'". error). How can we perform this rewrite so it does rewrite to virtual directories, or if anyone has any other solution for the initial dll seperation problem. Thanks in advance

  Can I run 64-bit VM guests on a 32-bit host? If I have a physical PC with 32 bit can I launch a VM that is 64 bit? What virtual machine software (Virtual PC or VirtualBox or other) would allow this? I read out there that VMware may support this but I am looking for something Open source or free. Host would preferably be a Windows host but could be Linux. Guest needs to be Windows. Thanks

  I have a few DELL servers in a remote DC and our ISP has been very kind about doing OS installs for us. However, as we move to Production and multiple DC's I'd like to be able to do the installs/re-installs internally and DRAC Enterprise w/SDRAM seems ideal. My question is, how do you get your install ISO's on to the SDRAM? Can I just copy it from a local DVD (temp USB hookup) or FTP? What's the advantage to the SDRAM over just buying a USB dongle (to leave plugged into the server) and installing a bootable install ISO? We're a virtual org generally using DSL (2mb) connections to the DC over the Internet and using 'Virtual Media' isn't viable for us.

  In my organization, the main server is Windows Small Business 2011. It uses a WMI service (I think) to get the Security and Update status of computers on the network. I have a Server 2008 virtual machine in VirtualBox with bridged network adapter. The SBS will not correctly get the status of, nor the operating system of, the Server 2008 VM. What settings do I have wrong / can I actually do this for a virtual machine in the first place? -- I do not know what further information might be needed, just ask and I will post.

  I currently have a machine set up to operate with two domains. The main name uses the standard Unix-user delivery, and the second domain is entirely virtual (using virtual_alias_domains and virtual_alias_maps), with the second domain only forwarding mail. However, when mail is forwarded, it still appears to be delivered by the host of the primary domain (presumably set by myorigin.) Is it possible to get it so when mail is forwarded to the virtual domain, it appears to be delivered by it as well? That domain is on another IP and I'd like to use it so the mail stays consistent. My virtual server is so far only accessible through an IP address, no DNS entry yet, and so far none needed either. The problem I have is with Apache2, the virtual hosts are puzzling me. What I need is: Access to my project (based on Symfony2) from the outside with the IP address Access to my project from localhost What I have got: Access from the outside results in rendering the websites in /var/www/vhosts/htdocs/default, while from the inside results in rendering the websites in /var/www. Why the difference? What is a recommended configuration for my use case?

• VPS hang when one Virtual CPU usage is 100%

  We are using Xen Center to manage all of our cPanel VPS servers. The hardware has two CPUs(Intel(R) Xeon(R) CPU [email protected]) and 32GB memory. Each hardware has 4 cPanel VPS and each VPS has 8GB memory and 4 Virtual CPUS. Every one or two months, one of the VPS server will hang because one Virtual CPU usage is 100% and it couldn't release the CPU unless we use force reboot. We have 10 similar hardware, and this cause our server down almost every day. We have tried to avoid the Statistics Processing and Fantastico update during the night, but the problem still happens randomly. I can not find anything in the server log when it hangs. Any clue? Thank you.

• Virtual hosts and subdomains, need configuring on live, not on dev

  I have a query about subdomains and virtual hosts. On my dev server, I ca nset up a new virtual hosts and point it to a subdomain, ie: newdomain.mydevserver.com All is fine and I can access 'newdomain/mydevserver/com' I can also do 'host newdomain.mydevserver.com' However, when I do the same with my main server I get the server couldn't be contacted error - I'm guessing that's because i need a cname or a record for the DNS. My question is, why does it seem that i can create subdomains on my dev but not on my live server? Help appreciated, many thanks!

  Previous used Ubuntu Gnome with Compiz but for my basic spec intel macbook (4 years old) its a little too heavyweight. So for now Im back on my macbook with os x, but now considering going back to Linux. Im looking for a window manager that has the following properties: 1) Supports virtual desktop (need 4 minimum) 2) Works well with multi monitors - can move an app with shortcut from one monitor to the other (on same virtual desktop) 3) Can remember window position (i.e. open vim on 2 monitor) - however must coerce everything back to first window when 2nd screen is unplugged 4) Keyboard shortcut friendly 5) Not too hard to install 6) Works well with minimum hardware such as integrated graphics Please suggest and share your experiences
