• Outlook 2003 Add-In Setup Project with COM DLL Deployment Problem

  Hi, I developed an Outlook 2003 add-in which uses the com dll redemption. I created a visual studio 2008 setup project, added a custom action to run "caspol.exe -machine -addgroup 1 -strong -hex [key] -noname -noversion FullTrust -n \"Name\" -description \"desc\" and moved the registry keys under software to HKLM as described in http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc136646.aspx#AutoDeployVSTOse_InstallingtheAddinforAllUsers to ensure all-users compatibility. I included the redemption.dll in the setup with vsdrfCOMSelfReg (vsdrfCOM throwed an error). My problem is: When installing the setup on a test machine under an admin account, it runs fine under all users, however when we use the company wide software deployment which runs under a system account the setup executes but the add-in wont load. If I repair the installation with an admin account again it loads just fine. Shouldn't a system account have the required permissions to install all of the components? What options do I have? • Dynamically create sprite images for Cocos2d-iPhone

  Hey guys, I'm working on a platformer, and looking for a way to create a sprite for an arbitrarily sized platform. For example, I may know I have a platform that should appear 200 pixels wide by 32 pixels high, and, say, I have a texture of bricks that I can tile to fill that area. I may also want to draw a black border around the platform. Is this possible at all? Anyone have any ideas for how I might go about doing this? I could always try generating the image on the fly and building a sprite with that image, but I sincerely doubt (hope) that this isn't the most efficient way of doing something like this. • Changing the x-axis of seqlogo figures in matlab

  I'm making a large number of seqlogos programatically. They are hundreds of columns wide and so running a seqlogo normally creates letters that are too thin to see. I've noticed that I only care about a few of these columns (not necessarily consecutive columns) ... most are noise but some are highly conserved. I use something like this snippet: conserve_cell = seqlogo(wide_seqs, 'displaylogo', false); high_bit_cols = any(conserve_cell{2}>1.0,1); [~, handle] = seqlogo(wide_seqs(:,high_bit_cols )); Although when I do this I lose the information about which columns the data came from. Normally I would just change the x-axis of the seqlogo. However, seqlogo's are some sort of crazy java-based object and calls like: set(handle, 'xticklabel', num2str(find(high_bit_cols))) don't work. • Best way to deal with session handling in Zend Framework

  So I'm starting up in Zend framework and looking to implement a site-wide "User" session.... something I can easily access from ALL modules/controllers in the application. I'm like, should I make a new namespace in the library and extend the controller, like: MyLib_Controller_Action extends Zend_Controller_Action { protected $_userSession; function preDispatch(Zend_Controller_Request_Abstract $req) { $this->_userSession = new Zend_Session_Namespace('user'); } } ANd then have all my controllers/modules/etc extend from that? Or should I create a Plugin or what? How would you go about making this plugin to pass the user session to the controller? Or do I do it in the bootstrap?? Again how to pass to controller? Also should I use Zend_Session_Namespace or Zend_Http_Cookie and also how do I encrypt and xss clean the cookie or is that did automagically?

• Is it good practice to call module functions directly in VB.NET?

  I have a Util module in my VB.NET program that has project-wide methods such as logging and property parsing. The general practice where I work seems to be to call these methods directly without prefixing them with Util. When I was new to VB, it took me a while to figure out where these methods/functions were coming from. As I use my own Util methods now, I can't help thinking that it's a lot clearer and more understandable to add Util. before each method call (you know immediately that it's user-defined but not within the current class, and where to find it), and is hardly even longer. What's the general practice when calling procedures/functions of VB modules? Should we prefix them with the module name or not?

• What programming language best bridges the gap between pseudocode and code?

  As I write code from now on, I plan to first lay out everything in beautiful, readable pseudocode and then implement the program around that structure. If I rank the languages that I currently know from easiest to most difficult to translate, I'd say: Lisp, Python, Lua, C++, Java, C I know that each language has its strength and weaknesses but I'm focusing specifically on pseudocode. What language do you use that is best suited for pseudocode-to-code? I always enjoy picking up new languages. Also, if you currently use this technique, I'd love to hear any tips you have about structuring practical pseudocode. Note: I feel this is subjective but has a clear answer per individual preference. I'm asking this here because the SO community has a very wide audience and is likely to suggest languages and techniques that I would otherwise not encounter.

• Slow motion tween text isn't smooth

  Hi! i have to create a movie where a text string move in horizontal. the problem is that in the movie (800px wide) the text should go from right to left in about 7 seconds (so it have to go about 400px to the left in 7 sec). i created a motion-tween with ease for my "text" and the tween is long (at 30fps) 30*7=210 frames. the result is that the text DON'T MOVE FLUID... it's not a uniform movement... it's too visible the fact that it moves X pixel each x frames. it's the exact opposite of SMOOTH MOVEMENT. How can i obtain a smooth slow-motion text movement?

• Crashing the OS X Pasteboard

  I have an application that reads in text by emulating CMD-C copy commands and reading the pasteboard - unfortunately this the only way to achieve what I need. Occasionally, something goes wrong in execution (not sure yet if it's related to the copy command or not) and the app crashes. Once in a while, this has a knock on effect on the system-wide pasteboard - any other application that is running will crash if I attempt a copy, cut, or paste. Is there a robust way to handle this - something I should be doing with the NSPasteboard before exiting? Any information on what might be happening is appreciated. • Revision Materals, other than book, for MCTS 70-536 Exam

  Does anyone have any recommendations on revision materials for the MCTS 70-536 exam other than the monstrosity that is the official book? I am finding it very difficult to absorb the amount of information in the book in such a passive way (i.e just reading) it's not going in. My current approach has been to use the practise tests and make notes on the questions I was unsure about but given the wide varity of questions that could come up I am not sure if this is the correct way to do things. So is there someone with more condensed, bite-size, information to take in. Maybe videos or podcasts? Cheers!

• SQL Server: One large persisted computed column for Fulltext Indexing

  It appears to me as the easiest, most straightforward solution, but please correct me if I'm wrong. Instead of having a fulltext index on all individual columns of a table, isn't it better to just generate one single wide computed column and run the fulltext index against that only? It appears to me that it gets rid of all the issues of having multiple columns, incl. that I can't search "x AND y" as this will not match a row with "x" present in column 1 and "y" present in column 2. Any counterarguments?

  My understanding of the Git pack file format is something like: Where the table is 32-bits wide, and the first three 32-bit words are the pack file header. The last row of 32 bits are the first 4 bytes of an entry. As I understand it, the size of the entry is specified by consecutive bytes with the MSB set, followed by compressed data. In the first byte whose MSB is not set, is the MSB part of the compressed data, or is it a gap? If it's part of the compressed data, how can you guarantee that when the data is compressed that bit won't be set?

• Drupal Imagecache not working

  I created an Imagecache setting that just resizes to 125px wide. First issue is that the preview image is 404. Then I want to print out an image via <?php print theme('imagecache', 'imported_image', $node->picture, 'test', 'test', $attributes); ?> 'imported_image' being the preset and $node-picture is a correct path. The html prints out ok but the path it's trying load the image from does not exist. In sites/default/files/imagecache there is no folder with the name of the preset. Flushing the preset does nothing. The imagecache folder is writeable by everyone. This is on MAMP. Anyone know what the issue could be?

  I need to display certain content inside a popup window, and the body element must be 320px by 300px for styling purposes So I do the following: %p = link_to "Play in popup", popup_podcast_path(@podcast), :popup => ['new_window','height=300,width=320,toolbar=no,location=no,directories=no,status=no,menubar=no,scrollbars=no,resizable=yes'] Firefox does exactly what I ask it to do, it displays a popup window, with a page body that is 320px wide and 300px high, so my content fits perfectly inside. But Chrome includes the browser frame dimensions when sizing the popup, which means that the body element is less than the required size.... i.e. if the browser titlebar is 10px high, then this is subtracted from the space allocated to the body element How do I tell Chrome, that I want the body element to be 320 by 300, and that I dont want it to subtract the width and height of the browser frame from body element dimensions It's a bit like the old box-model problem where FF and IE added padding in different ways except firefox adds the browser frame outside the desired 320x300 size, and Chrome is adding it inside

• How can I subsample data from a time series with LINQ to SQL?

  I have a database table full of time points and experimental values at those time points. I need to retrieve the values for an experiment and create a thumbnail image showing an XY plot of its data. Because the actual data set for each experiment is potentially 100,000 data points and my image is only 100 pixels wide, I want to sample the data before creating the image. My current query (which retrieves all the data without sampling) is something simple like this: var points = from p in db.DataPoints where p.ExperimentId == myExperimentId orderby p.Time select new { X = p.Time, Y = p.Value } So, how can I best take every nth point from my result set in a LINQ to SQL query?

• missing entry in launchctl after restart

  I have a deamon which is registered with launchctl to run as system-wide-daemon and to load automatically with every system startup or if the daemon crashes. I have registered this daemon with: sudo launchctl load -w /Library/LaunchDaemons/plist.file Everything works fine. My daemon is registered and with sudo launchctl list I can find the entry at launchctl But on some Macs after the user restarts the system, my daemon is not running. And with the command sudo launchctl list I can't find the entry anymore. Any ideas, why the entry is missing???

• sound volume increase beyond 100% whenever possible on linux

  Some audio output from files or streams is too low. It is obvious that hardware is able to play the same sounds but louder but because of the data it just plays it at some low level even at 100% volume. Vlc can generally increase the volume of a file up to 200%. Is there a way to do the same thing VLC does system-wide and if possible for an arbitrary v percentage value. If there is no application that does this, where should i look into for libs to do it myself or what code should i modify(eg code in the alsamixer) thank you

• Need help making row of buttons consistent

  I'm making my first website, and I'm trying to make variable-sized buttons so they'll render correctly on low resolution (read: mobile) browsers. Currently I just have the usual rollover image solution (185 pixels wide by 37 tall if anybody cares), but when I preview the site in low resolution it looks, predictably enough, like complete crap (more specifically they don't have room so they arrange vertically instead of horizontally and take up a huge amount of screen real estate). Semi-related, is there a way to overlay text on a button without saving separate images, each with the correct text? Just using a single template for buttons and then deciding what text goes on it as it's needed? tl;dr: I'm trying to get a horizontal lineup of buttons for navigating my website, but I'm a noob and I can't do it right without your generous assistance.

  Hi, We're currently looking at an IT upgrade and I'm after recommendations for a tool which can do some or all of the following. SVN management (authz, web viewer, commit log, diff) Create template projects (1 click e.g. create me a microsite with this name in svn and give these people access) Reporting on code churn, time spent on tasks on a per project basis User story management Basically like Team Foundation Server but that integrates with SVN properly (reason for this - we have a wide range of skill sets and not everyone can use a TFS client). Is there a combination of Trac plugins + something that can create trac instances (a la Dreamhost's admin panel) that can acheive this. On a side note, does anyone have any experience of version controlling designery type files - e.g. PSDs, Illustrator files. Any advice at all appreciated. Cheers, Rob

• Unsuccessful error detection of improperly declared method in GCC 4.2 compiler

  I am using C++ compiler GCC 4.2 in XCode 3.2.2. I have noted that the compiler will successfully compile a method foo even though there are no ellipses. The header and method are properly declared as foo(), but when I do a find and replace either by file or by program-wide it will miss approximately 2-3% of the changes [foo to foo(). This would not be critical if the compiler did not give an erroneous successful build. I have not found that this to occur with: foo(any parameter). Does anyone have any solution? Thank you.

• What do the square brackets in LaTeX logs mean?

  I'm currently working on a parser that reads complete LaTeX logs. Most of the log format is, though weird, easy to figure out, but these square brackets are puzzling me. Here's an example from near the end of one of my logs: Overfull \hbox (10.88788pt too wide) in paragraph at lines 40--40 []$[]$ [] [102]) [103] Kapitel 14. (./Thermo-141-GrenzenFundamentalpostulat.tex [104 ]) (./Thermo-142-Mastergleichung.tex [105]) (./Thermo-143-HTheorem.tex [106pdfTeX warning (ext4): destination with the same identifier (name{equation.14.3.3}) ha s been already used, duplicate ignored Can anybody give me a hint what these square brackets mean? I can't see any structure in them. I have the suspicion that lines 2/3 above are some kind of ASCII art representing the box layout, though I know too less about badboxes to justify this or identify the meaning of the single characters. Then, the "[104" etc. seem to correspond to the page numbers, but I am still not seeing the reason why there is sometimes something inbetween the square brackets (like the pdfTeX warning above), and sometimes not.
