• Applescript to connect to bluetooth device

  I'm trying to create an applescript to allow me to connect to a bluetooth device by it's Bluetooth ID. So far, i've managed to get an applescript to turn on bluetooth if it's off. Here's the code: # This is only necessary, if AppleScripts are not yet allowed to change checkboxes tell application "System Events" to set UI elements enabled to true # Now change the bluetooth status tell application "System Preferences" set current pane to pane id "com.apple.preferences.bluetooth" tell application "System Events" tell process "System Preferences" # Enabled is checkbox number 2 if value of checkbox 2 of window "Bluetooth" is 0 then click checkbox 2 of window "Bluetooth" end if end tell end tell quit end tell Would someone know if and how it's possible to set up a new bluetooth device and if it'd be posible to connect to a device based on it's device name/ it's device bluetooth ID? When A1 has the value 2009-08-01, then: =WEEKDAY(A1) will obtain 7 =TEXT(7, "dddd") will obtain Saturday =TEXT(7,"dddd, yyyy-mm-dd") will obtain Saturday, 1900-01-07 =TEXT(1,"dddd, yyyy-mm-dd") will obtain Sunday, 1900-01-01 =TEXT("1900-01-01","dddd, yyyy-mm-dd") will also obtain Sunday, 1900-01-01 The last two are wrong: the 1st of January 1900 is actually a Monday. Various sources seem to confirm that: January 1900 - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia. Year 1900 Calendar – The Netherlands. Year 1900 Calendar – United States. What am I missing? Why is Excel doing this wrong?

• Laptop drains of quickly with battery

  I am a user since years in ubuntu and I have not come across this problem with ubuntu till date. My battery drains off immediately after I unplug my AC power. The options I tried: 1) checked the battery state with : cat /proc/acpi/battery/BAT0/state present: yes capacity state: ok charging state: charged present rate: 0 mA remaining capacity: 392 mAh present voltage: 12476 mV Initially it was showing charging state: charging after 5mins it started displaying as charged. ! Based on that if I remove my AC Power it shows low battery notification. 2) When I run acpi : acpi -b Battery 0: Unknown, 9% The battery state shows as unknown. But initially when we plug-in to AC adapter acpi -b Battery 0: Charging, 9%, 13:04:00 until charged 3) When the check the same with : upower -i /org/freedesktop/UPower/devices/battery_BAT0 native-path: /sys/devices/LNXSYSTM:00/device:00/PNP0A08:00/device:02/PNP0C09:00/PNP0C0A:00/power_supply/BAT0 vendor: HP power supply: yes updated: Thu Nov 1 16:06:40 2012 (20 seconds ago) has history: yes has statistics: yes battery present: yes rechargeable: yes state: charging energy: 4.2336 Wh energy-empty: 0 Wh energy-full: 33.1128 Wh energy-full-design: 33.1128 Wh energy-rate: 5.6052 W voltage: 12.474 V time to full: 5.2 hours percentage: 12.7854% capacity: 100% technology: lithium-ion Is the power stats output, It says 5hrs to charge completely, If I charge it even more than 5hrs and unplug the AC power, It again cribs stating LOW BATTERY !! • I/O ports vs case holes

  I'm in the midst of building a new desktop (first time building my own). I bought MSI NF750-G55 AM3 NVIDIA nForce 750a SLI HDMI ATX motherboard, and HEC 6C28BS Black / Silver Steel ATX Mid Tower case. When they both arrived, I realized that the I/O panel on the case doesn't have the same holes that the motherboard needs. So my two questions are: 1) What should I have done? Both claim to be ATX. Do I just need to look more carefully at the pictures? 2) What should I do now? Can I just remove the whole panel (leaving empty spaces between and around the different ports? Specifically, will it cause problems to do this? (I'm looking for advice about question 1, but will accept based on question 2)

• Multiple data centers and HTTP traffic: DNS Round Robin is the ONLY way to assure instant fail-over?

  Hi, Multiple A records pointing to the same domain seem to be used almost exclusively to implement DNS Round Robin as a cheap load balancing technique. The usual warning against DNS RR is that it is not good for high availability. When 1 IP goes down clients will continue to use it for minutes. A load balancer is often suggested as a better choice. Both claims are not completely true: When the traffic is HTTP then, most of the HTML browsers are able to automatically try the next A record if the previous is down, without a new DNS look-up. Read here chapter 3.1 and here. When multiple data centers are involved then, DNS RR is the only option to distribute traffic across them. So, is it true that, with multiple data centers and HTTP traffic, the use of DNS RR is the ONLY way to assure instant fail-over when one data center goes down? Thanks, Valentino Edit: Off course each data center has a local Load Balancer with hot spare. It's OK to sacrifice session affinity for an instant fail-over. AFAIK the only way for a DNS to suggest a data center instead of another is to reply with just the IP (or IPs) associated to that data center. If the data center becomes unreachable then all those IP are also unreachables. This means that, even if smart HTML browsers are able to instantly try another A record , all the attempts will fail until the local cache entry expires and a new DNS lookup is done, fetching the new working IPs (I assume DNS automatically suggests to a new data center when one fail). So, "smart DNS" cannot assure instant fail-over. Conversely a DNS round-robin permits it. When one data center fail, the smart HTML browsers (most of them) instantly try the other cached A records jumping to another (working) data center. So, DNS round-robin doesn't assure session affinity or the lowest RTT but seems to be the only way to assure instant fail-over when the clients are "smart" HTML browsers. Edit 2: Some people suggest TCP Anycast as a definitive solution. In this paper (chapter 6) is explained that Anycast fail-over is related to BGP convergence. For this reason Anycast can employ from 15 minutes to 20 seconds to complete. 20 seconds are possible on networks where the topology was optimized for this. Probably just CDN operators can grant such fast fail-overs. Edit 3:* I did some DNS look-ups and traceroutes (maybe some expert can double check) and: The only CDN using TCP Anycast seems to be CacheFly, other operators like CDN networks and BitGravity use CacheFly. Seems that their edges cannot be used as reverse proxies. Therefore, they cannot be used to grant instant failover. Akamai and LimeLight seems to use geo-aware DNS. But! They return multiple A records. From traceroutes seems that the returned IPs are on the same data center. So, I'm puzzled on how they can offer a 100% SLA when one data center goes down.

  I dived into the MEF session with Glenn Block, Sourabh Mathur, Brian Henderson, and others.  Glenn covered the basic architectural ideas of MEF and then dived into a few examples. Is a framework around decoupling components. Built around the idea of discoverable type systems. Traditional extensibility mechanisms have a host and the respective extensions, commonly linking these two aspects with a form of registration. MEF removes the need for the registration part of the architecture and uses a contract. At some point with MEF you get down to parts, which removes even the complexity of a host or extensions, but a truly evolvable architecture based on natural growth of parts. Also referred to as the framework that removes the "new" keyword. The idea is that parts pull together other parts that they need.  Between each part is a contract. Each part has imports or exports for the parts it needs or the things it offers. If one checks out the MEF Codeplex Site you will find a host of additional information.  The framework download also has some decent examples that help one get kick started.

With razor thin margins in manufacturing and distribution, the leading producers are resorting to Near Field Communications to gain efficiencies.  In this week’s CIO magazine (Apr1, 2012, pg.30, see http://www.cio.com)  Lauren Brousell talks of the things you need to know to make a more informed decision with NFC.  Sandy Shen of Gartner says NFC appeals because "it supports any services that requires data transfer and authentication' 1. NFC is Cheap and Easy - short range transmitting technology connecting smartphones to data transfer. 2. Adoption Seems Inevitable - more merchants will use NCF for payments in the futures. Wallets are becoming obsolete. 3. It's a Hot Potato for Enterprise - Business with credit card companies and cell phone providers are debating who handles the billing process. 4. It's in use Overseas. Japan uses FeliCa to pay by smartphone. In the US, billing agreements are causing territorial conflict. 5. Security Risks Come Standard. As people lose HH devices, security will be an ongoing concern. Credentials and timeout features and alleviate to some extent. My prediction: In 5 years, we won't have wallets in our pockets.  Our secure and all-powerful smart phones will be our electronic portable banks and execute the transaction for us based on our preferences and propensities and electronically execute the transaction for the supply chain.

• Fog shader camera problem

  I have some difficulties with my vertex-fragment fog shader in Unity. I have a good visual result but the problem is that the gradient is based on the camera's position, it moves as the camera moves. I don't know how to fix it. • Dynamic/Adaptive RLE

  So, I'm developing a 2D, tile based game and a map maker thingy - all in Java. The problem is that recently I've been having some memory issues when about 4 maps are loaded. Each one of these maps are composed of 128x128 tiles and have 4 layers (for details and stuff). I already spent a good amount of time searching for solutions and the best thing I found was run-length enconding (RLE). It seems easy enough to use with static data, but is there a way to use it with data that is constantly changing, without a big drop in performance? In my maps, supposing I'm compressing the columns, I would have 128 rows, each with some amount of data (hopefully less than it would be without RLE). Whenever I change a tile, that whole row would have to be checked and I'm affraid that would slow down too much the production (and I'm in a somewhat tight schedule). Well, worst case scenario I work on each map individually, and save them using RLE, but it would be really nice if I could avoind that. EDIT: What I'm currently using to store the data for the tiles is a 2D array of HashMaps that use the layer as key and store the id of the tile in that position - like this: private HashMap< Integer, Integer [][]

• HOWTO run Wordpress site along with Tomcat web aplication on the same server

  I am building a solution where the CMS part of the site (i.e. About US, Contact etc) will be run on Wordpress & the private pages will be a Java-Servlet based stack run on Tomcat 7. Both of these "apps" have to run on the same server for budget reasons, at least for now. What I want to know how to make this happen (via configurations, setups etc)? So that whenever users come to public pages they will be served content from Wordpress but for private pages (here I am assuming there will be a URL pattern differentiating this) then it will be served by Tomcat I am assuming here that I will be using Apache as the server for fronting the wordpress requests. Also it is an Ubuntu 12.04 server.

  I deploy apps via ClickOnce. After each deployment we have to review the changes made and send out an email to the users with the changes. What I decided now to do is to use CodebaseHQ’s API to access a project’s SVN repository and display the commit notes so some users who download new updates can check what was changed or updated in an app. This saves a heck of a lot of time, especially when your apps are in beta and you are making several changes daily based on feedback. • How do you implement NAT-T passthrough on a Juniper SRX series Firewall?

  We have 3 juniper SRX-100 firewalls, they are configured like so: FW1 - FW2 - INTERNET - FW3 We would like to create an IPSEC tunnel between FW3 and FW1 passing through FW2 preferably using NAT-T. Is this possible? FW1 and FW2 have some strict access rules only allowing 1 port connected (it's a DMZ with a server in) so we can't just create a route based vpn between FW1 and FW2 to forward the traffic (otherwise all traffic will be forwarded) We know the tunnel is fine because we have managed to test it between FW1 and FW3 (without FW2 in the middle) so we know that the issue is to do with the 'passthrough' on FW2. Essentially, the question is - What options do we need to select on FW2 to enable it to pass through the IPSEC traffic straight to FW1? Many thanks in advance

• Yum install problem on netsolvps server

  I tried to install yum based on http://www.wallpaperama.com/forums/how-to-install-yum-problems-installing-on-linux-redhat-fedora-commands-t471.html. my current python is 2.4.6, red hot fedora core 6, 4.1.1-28, RPM 4.4.2. I tried with the yum 3.0.1 version for my current server configuration. There is no configure file on 3.0.1 so i used make install command. All files complied without error. If I run #rpm -q yum it says "package yum is not installed". Whats the problem here on the yum installation?

• Design Pattern Advice for Bluetooth App for Android

  I’m looking for some advice on which patterns would apply to some of my work. I’m planning on doing a project as part of my college work and I need a bit of help. My main project is to make a basic Android bluetooth tracking system where the fixed locations of bluetooth dongles are mapped onto a map of a building. So my android app will regularly scan for nearby dongles and triangulate its location based on signal strength. The dongles location would be saved to a database along with their mac addresses to differentiate between them. The android phones location will then be sent to a server. This information will be used to show the phone’s location on a map of the building, or map of a route taken, on a website. My side project is to choose a suitable design pattern that could be implemented in this main project. I’m still a bit new to design patterns and am finding it hard to get my head around ones that may be suitable. I’ve heard maybe some that are aimed at web applications for the server side of things may be appropriate. • Open-source training class/room/instructor resource management software?

  We're looking to replace an internal system used for managing training classes with something a bit more robust. Needs to be open-source or have a license level that grants access to source, and needs to be ASP.net (C# preferred, but could live with VB.net) Ultimately, we'll need to be able to assign facilities and instructors, manage attendees, send notifications, and build calendar views. We'll also be integrating with our website to allow on-line sign-up and other things for attendees to manage on their own. We do expect to implement quite a bit of it in-house, but we'd like as broad of a base to start from as we can get. Still, just a really good web-based meeting-room reservation system might make a good enough starting point. • Managing DroboShare SSH usernames and passwords

  The default login for SSH on the droboshare is a user name of root with a password of giveit2me. With the command passwd the password can be changed. However I can't find anyway to change the default user name. Since any Unix based has a user named root this kinda bugs me as a minor security issue. Does anyone know how to change the user name for droboshare SSH logins? The SSH program being used is a variant of dropbear if that is any help.

• SSIS Dashboard v0.4

  Following the post on SSISDB script on Gist, I’ve been working on a HTML5 SSIS Dashboard, in order to have a nice looking, user friendly and, most of all, useful, SSIS Dashboard. Since this is a “spare-time” project, I’ve decided to develop it using Python since it’s THE data language (R aside), it’s a beautiful & powerful, well established and well documented and with a rich ecosystem around. Plus it has full support in Visual Studio, through the amazing Python Tools For Visual Studio plugin, I decided also to use Flask, a very good micro-framework to create websites, and use the SB Admin 2.0 Bootstrap admin template, since I’m all but a Web Designer. The result is here: https://github.com/yorek/ssis-dashboard and I can say I’m pretty satisfied with the work done so far (I’ve worked on it for probably less than 24 hours). Though there’s some features I’d like to add in t future (historical execution time, some charts, connection with AzureML to do prediction on expected execution times) it’s already usable. Of course I’ve tested it only on my development machine, so check twice before putting it in production but, give the fact that, virtually, there is not installation needed (you only need to install Python), and that all queries are based on standard SSISDB objects, I expect no big problems. If you want to test, contribute and/or give feedback please fell free to do it…I would really love to see this little project become a community project! Enjoy!

  I have a Django website where some of the URLs need to be served over HTTPS and some over a normal connection. It's running on Apache and using WSGI. I just need a few settings to be different for the secure server, which is why I'm using a different WSGI script. Alternatively, it there's a way to change settings in the settings.py file based on whether the connection is secure or not, that would also work. Thanks

  Windows CE is a 32 bits OS since day one, so it makes sense tools shipped with PB, compiler, linker, assembler and etc, are for targeting to 32 bits system. But occasionally, if you are developing x86 based system and especially working on some boot code, such as boot sector of BIOSLOADER, that will be a problem. Normally, as PB provides the prebuilt boot sector image but if you ever need to rebuilt it, what should you do? You may say as it's an x86, perhaps you can use VS or Windows SDK to build it. But unfortunately, today's desktop Windows tool chains are also 32 or even 64 bits only, you need to find something older. VC++ 6.0, but how can you find one? This Website http://thestarman.pcministry.com/asm/masm.htm arranges some useful resources. Basically, you need 2 thing, the 16 bits MASM and 16 bits linker. • Issue in understanding how to compare performance of classifier using ROC

  I am trying to demystify pattern recognition techniques and understood few of them. I am trying to design a classifier M. A gesture is classified based on the hamming distance between the sample time series y and the training time series x. The result of the classifier are probabilistic values. There are 3 classes/categories with labels A,B,C which classifies hand gestures where there are 100 samples for each class which are to be classified (single feature and data length=100). The data are different time series (x coordinate vs time). The training set is used to assign probabilities indicating which gesture has occured how many times. So,out of 10 training samples if gesture A appeared 6 times then probability that a gesture falls under category A is P(A)=0.6 similarly P(B)=0.3 and P(C)=0.1 Now, I am trying to compare the performance of this classifier with Bayes classifier, K-NN, Principal component analysis (PCA) and Neural Network. On what basis,parameter and method should I do it if I consider ROC or cross validate since the features for my classifier are the probabilistic values for the ROC plot hence what shall be the features for k-nn,bayes classification and PCA? Is there a code for it which will be useful. What should be the value of k is there are 3 classes of gestures? Please help. I am in a fix.
