• Session management error: None of the authentication protocols specified are supported

  The title is the first error that has sent me on a mission to fix things. Motivation: I was trying to install the new Enthought Python Distribution -- when the error above first showed up. The install finished -- and looked like there were a few more times it flagged dcopserver problems: Please check that "dcopserver" program is running! Could not read network connection list: ~/home/user/.DCOPserver_host__0 When running ipython from the distribution, it claims that readline (the ability to up arrow in history or tab-complete) is not available for my system. It is though -- if I run the ipython that's sitting in /usr/bin/ipython all readline features work perfectly. So, I tried to fix the install by trying to fix what I thought could be causing the problems. Bad things that are happening that I want to be fixed: When restarting I get the error: Could not update ICEauthority file /home/username/.ICEauthority. ipython readline doesn't work with Enthought's ipython Things I have tried: changed the owner of my ~/.ICEauthority to be me. changed the owner of home directory (and all nested files and folders) to be me double checked that /var/lib/gdm was owned by Gnome (yep) attempted to reinstall DCOP, kbuildsycoca stuff (fail) I've removed nautilus; rebooted; reinstalled; rebooted; removed ubuntu-desktop; rebooted; reinstalled; rebooted. Any suggestions on how to fix the Bad Things that are happening would be greatly appreciated! Computer: Ubuntu 10.04 x86

• Mailbox move issue from Exchange 2003 to Exchange 2010

  Today while moving mailboxes between Exchange 2003 and Exchange 2010, I hit an issue with a couple of mailboxes.  These mailboxes all popped access denied errors or more exactly: Insufficient Access Rights to perform the operation.   The cause was similar to the mail flow issue in that inheritable permissions were not turned on for the user object in Active Directory.  This also presented it’s own unique problem in that since the initial move request failed because of permissions, it had to be cleared before a new move request could be created. On top of that, the request did not show up in the EMC.  I used the following process to clear the request, assign permission, then create a new request:   1. First you need to know the ExchangeGUID of the mailbox for the remove-moverequest command.  To quickly get the GUID for a mailbox simply run:         2. Next we need to clear out the move request using PowerShell by running: [PS] c:\>Remove-moverequest -moverequestqueue "mailbox database 1030639620" -mailboxguid 8525686f-d4d3-42b7-92f1-46d77ea841a3   3. Then to re-establish inheritable permissions. This can be done by using AD Users and Computers, switching to View Advanced Features, then under the Security tab of the object.  Click Advanced, then check “allow inheritable permissions of parent to propagate to this object”   4. Once the Inheritable permissions are restored, we need to create a new move request: NOTE:  The EMC can also be used to initiate the Move Request once the permissions are corrected. [PS] c:\>New-moverequest –identity jyoung  -baditemlimit 100 -targetdatabase "mailbox database 1030639620"   And that’s it.  The mailbox should move over smoothly with no access denied error.

• PostSharp deployment to build machine- use Setup installation, not NuGet package.

  PostSharp has well documented different methods of installation. I've chosen installing NuGet packages, because according to  Deploying PostSharp into a Source Repository NuGet is the easiest way to add PostSharp to a project without installing the product on every machine. However it didn't work well for me. I've added PostSharp NuGet package to one project in the solution.  When I wanted to use PostSharp in other project, Visual Studio tab showed that PostSharp is not enabled for this project I've added the NuGet package to the new project, which installed a new version of the package in the new Packages subfolder. When I wanted to refer PostSharp from the third project, I've ended up with another version of PostSharp installed. Additionally multiple versions of Diagnostics were created. It definitely causes confusion and errors.   More problems we experienced on build server. According to Using PostSharp on a Build Server "If you chose to deploy PostSharp in the source repository, it does not need to be installed specifically on the build server. " It didn't work on our build server. I kept getting errors "The "AddIns" parameter is not supported by the "PostSharp21" task." and "The "DisableSystemBindingPolicies" parameter is not supported by the "PostSharp21" task."   From my experience the only way to have the latest version of PostSharp working on the build server is to install it using Setup as described in Deploying PostSharp with the Setup Program     Gael acknowledged the issues with possible version conflicts. see http://support.sharpcrafters.com/discussions/problems/388-the-postsharp21-task-failed-unexpectedly

• Run database checks but omit large tables or filegroups - New option in Ola Hallengren's Scripts

  One of the things I've always wanted in DBCC CHECKDB is the option to omit particular tables from the check. The situation that I often see is that companies with large databases often have only one or two very large tables. They want to run a DBCC CHECKDB on the database to check everything except those couple of tables due to time constraints. I posted a request on the Connect site about time some time ago: https://connect.microsoft.com/SQLServer/feedback/details/611164/dbcc-checkdb-omit-tables-option The workaround from the product team was that you could script out the checks that you did want to carry out, rather than omitting the ones that you didn't. I didn't overly like this as a workaround as clients often had a very large number of objects that they did want to check and only one or two that they didn't. I've always been impressed with the work that our buddy Ola Hallengren has done on his maintenance scripts. He pinged me recently about my old Connect item and said he was going to implement something similar. The good news is that it's available now. • Plastic Clamshell Packaging Voted Worse Design Ever

  We’ve all been there: frustrated and trying free a new purchase from it’s plastic clamshell jail. You’re not alone, the packaging design has been voted the worst in history. In a poll at Quora, users voted on the absolute worst piece of design work they’d encountered. Overwhelmingly, they voted the annoying-to-open clamshell design to the top. The author of the top comment/entry, Anita Shillhorn writes: “Design should help solve problems” — clamshells are supposed to make it harder to steal small products and easier for employees to arrange on display — but this packaging, she says, makes new ones, such as time wasted, frustration, and the little nicks and scrapes people incur as they just try to get their damn lightbulb out. This is a product designed for the manufacturers and the retailers, not the end users. • Oracle and Cavium to work together on Java SE 8 on 64-bit ARMv8

  We have been working for some time on a standard Oracle JDK 8 port to the upcoming introduction of 64-bit servers based on the new ARMv8 micro architecture. At ARM TechCon 2013 in Santa Clara, California, we announced a roadmap with an expected GA in 2015. This project is going very well and is ahead of schedule. We will soon be at the point where we will make binaries available outside of Oracle - first in a managed beta program with select customers/partners, and sometime during the fall of 2014 as a public early access program. Unless something changes, we are looking at a early 2015 GA. We should be able to share a detailed ramp down and GA plan by JavaOne 2014. One of the things we (obviously) need to produce a high-quality port is hardware for development and QA. We are therefore happy to announce that we will be collaborating with Cavium on this project. Cavium has been a supporter of the Java ecosystem for a long time and we have numerous joint customers running various Java versions on Cavium MIPS and ARM-based hardware. Cavium has now agreed to provide us with development hardware and engineering resources so that we can certify and optimize the initial Oracle JDK 8 release on Cavium's ThunderX hardware. This is expected to improve quality and performance of JDK 8 on ARMv8 in general, as well as on Cavium's hardware. • how do I make my Dualshock 3 gamepad work in Ubuntu 14.04?

  When my desktop computer was running Ubuntu 12.04, my PS3 controllers would work with USB. I didn't need to do any special setup. I could just plug it in before I start SuperTuxKart and it would recognize it. I can also do this on my laptop (still running 12.04). Since I gave my desktop a fresh install of Ubuntu 14.04, the controller would never work. I have played with some installed software that I found when looking for information. • Data binding in web UI frameworks, what's the deal?

  I believe that most of modern Web frameworks that pretend to be MVC ones also has a notion of data binding in one form or another. Examples: AngularJS, EmberJS, KnockoutJS, etc. I am assuming that "data binding" is a declarative definition (oxymoron, no?) of live link between data (a.k.a. model) and its representation (a.k.a. view). With some transformers in between (a.k.a. controllers). I understand why declarativeness is kind of appealing but also understand that as usual it comes with the price. In particular: 1. Live binding is quite heavy, either with dirty watch (high CPU consumption) or with Object.observe() (high memory consumption with high CPU load in some scenarios). 2. There is a "frame" part in the framework word, means there are some boundaries/limits that can be hard to overcome if you need slightly more than it was designed for. Quite usual time split: 90% of features are made in 10% of project time. But 10% rest take 90% of project time. I suspect (a.k.a. educated guess) that those MVC things are not helping to implement more functionality in less time... If so their usage motivation is not quite clear. As an example: last week wanted to find virtual list idea/solution. Found one in vanilla JavaScript that is 120 LOC. Implementation of the same but in AngualrJS is about 420 LOC. Most of the code there seems like a fight with the framework itself... So is my question: what benefits that MVC stuff or data binding give us? Is it just a buzzword popular among project managers or they give us something useful. If later one then what exactly?

• Hotspotting - tying Visualization into Other applications

  AutoVue 20 included our first step towards providing a rich hotspotting capability that will allow visualization capabilities to be very tightly integrated into a wide range of applications. The idea is to have a close link between the visual representation of an object or place, and the business objects associated with that object or place. We've been working with our partner Enigma to enable this capability in their parts catalogue - the screenshot above shows what it looks like - the image on the right is a trimmed down version of AutoVue displaying a drawing of the various parts in an interactive way - when you click on item '6' in the AutoVue drawing, the appropriate item is highlighted in the parts catalogue - making it easy to select the parts you need, and to ensure that the correct parts are selected. The integration works in both directions - when you select a part in the part catalogue, the appropriate part is highlighted in the drawing as well. To get slightly technical for a moment, this is a simple javascript integration - the external application provides a javascript callback that AutoVue calls whenever an item is clicked on, and AutoVue provides a javascript function to call when an item is selected in the external application. There are also direct java APIs available. This makes it easy to tie AutoVue into many types of applications - you can imagine in an asset lifecycle management application being able to click on the appropriate asset in a drawing to create a work-order, instead of finding the right asset ID to enter. Or being able to click on a part or sub-assembly to trigger a change order in a product lifecycle management application. We're pretty excited about the possibilities that this capability opens up, and plan on expanding on it a lot in the future. Would this be useful in your enterprise applications? • Is Movable Type among the most secure PHP blogs? How secure are the various PHP blog applications?

  Basically I'm trying to find a blog for a website, and security is the highest priority in our case. We don't need any features that I would imagine are special. Wordpress was our first idea, but its reputation precedes it, and though it may have cleaned up its act lately, I'm not seeing much solid evidence. I get the impression that Movable Type (at least the Perl version) has a much better reputation for security than Wordpress (historically at least). I'm not sure I want to take a chance with Wordpress at this point, but is there some objective source I can got to to back up (or counter) the notion that MT is at least among the best? Secunia doesn't recommend using their stats for comparisons, and securityfocus.com doesn't have stats at all that I can see. Searching here http://web.nvd.nist.gov makes MT look way better than WP (at least in 2007), but this site was referenced by MT's own page boasting about their security, so I don't know how relevant it is or how seriously people take it. Any suggestions on sites where I could/should make a somewhat objective comparison?

• Observable Adapter

  .NET 4.0 introduced a pair of interfaces, IObservable<T> and IObserver<T>, supporting subscriptions to and notifications for push-based sequences. In combination with Reactive Extensions (Rx), these interfaces provide a convenient and uniform way of describing event sources and sinks in .NET. The StreamInsight CTP refresh in November 2009 included an Observable adapter supporting “reactive” event inputs and outputs.   While we continue to believe it enables an important programming model, the Observable adapter was not included in the final (RTM) release of Microsoft StreamInsight 1.0. The release takes a dependency on .NET 3.5 but for timing reasons could not take a dependency on .NET 4.0. Shipping a separate copy of the observable interfaces in StreamInsight – as we did in the CTP refresh – was not a viable option in the RTM release.   Within the next months, we will be shipping another preview of the Observable adapter that targets .NET 4.0. We look forward to gathering your feedback on the new adapter design! We plan to include the Observable adapter implementation into the product in a future release of Microsoft StreamInsight. • Is there a visual web application builder or rapid webapp prototyping framework?

  Question: Is there such a thing as a self-hosted framework or CMS especially tailored towards the creation of interactive web applications without -- or with an absolute minimum of -- programming? (Substantially less programming than say a simple Rails app or a plugin for Wordpress, Joomla etc would require.) As for desired features I'd settle for whatever is available, but some ideas could be: A User authentication and Permissions system. A GUI-driven input form builder. A GUI-driven template / visual site design builder. A simple scripting language (think AppleScript-like simplicity) A highly modular architecture, with high-level business objects (users, forms data, etc) exposed for easy re-use. If something like the above doesn't exist, then what comes near this? Need: This is for self-hosted rapid prototyping of web applications, and limited user testing of webapp user interface designs in a closed user test. Notes: I know about Ruby on Rails (Rails), Django, Pyramid etc. I'm looking for something much faster to work in, for making prototypes. I know about CMS's in general but find that most of them are tailored towards displaying information to the end users. If there is an exceptionally easy-to-master CMS with easy scripting (lets say much more so than for example Wordpress) then I'd be interested.
