• Windows XP Log In: Can't do it. Logon Message popup.

  A friend recommended this site to me. Hope you can help! I can't seem to log into Windows. I boot my computer. The log In screen appears. I put in my user name and password, hit OK, and the following message pops up: "The system could not log you on. Make sure your user name and domain name are correct, then type your password again. Letters in your passwords must be typed using the correct case". NOTE: I have tried Safe Mode and the same message pops up. Just to be clear, I am not able to get into Windows (I'm stressing this b/c I've come across some suggestions that require you to be in Windows, which doesn't help in my case). • What is Slotted and pure aloha?

  So I am having a really hard time understanding slotted and pure aloha. I have understood CSMA/CD fairly well, but that is it. I have the book: Computer networking - a top down approach, but I find the explanation very cryptic and hard to understand. Wikipedia did not help me. Does anyone have a brief "aloha for dummies" explanation? or perhaps a video tutorial? I think I need something visual. I don't need to be able to create the protocol, I just need a general understanding of it.

• SVNNotify Where is it? how do I find it?

  I am on ubuntu. ok first of all I am running a post-commit script. I need the path to svnnotify to run it. The path the turotial I am reading has it as /usr/local/bin/svnnotify but nothing is in that location on my computer. I tried it anyways and I get something like: Warning post-commit hook failed: not found so I think I need to replace /usr/local/bin/svnnotify with the correct path to svnnotify. Well I do a search (Places>Search for Files) for svnnotify and nothing comes up. I know svnnotify is installed becuase if I open a command line and run svnnotify it tells me I am missing the required path argument. So how can it be installed if its not in the file system anywhere? I don't really know how linux works, its very new to me, so I am confused. Is there something I am missing?

• Grub not loading after Windows 8 Install

  My system was configured to dual boot Ubuntu 12.04.1 LTS and Windows 7. Today I got my hands on the MSDN release of Windows 8 and I installed it over my Windows 7. Now the computer just boots to Windows 8 directly without loading the GRUB screen. So I followed the steps as suggested in: https://help.ubuntu.com/community/RecoveringUbuntuAfterInstallingWindows. • Can I Store MediaWiki Files on the cloud?

  I recently got a chromebook, and I've been brainstorming different ways to put mediawiki on it (with localhost, not a server). One way I've read about online is to go into developer mode to download and set up LAMP. I was wondering, wouldn't I be able to store the apache, mysql, php, and mediawiki files on the cloud (google drive)? And if so, would anything prevent me from accessing my wiki on any other computer's localhost, assuming I could just log into Google Drive to access these files? Might there be any reduced performance when operating from the cloud?

• Run BGInfo At Startup For All Users

  I have a Windows 7 image which I intend to deploy across a business. For simplicity I intend to install BGInfo on each machine and have it update each time a user logs in. From what I can see, when BGInfo creates a configuration file, the file contains variables which are local to each account - and therefore the configuration file will only work on the user account that created it. Has anyone any idea as to how make these configuration files 'generic' so that BGInfo will work for all accounts when they log in? At present I have the BGInfor application and a BGInfo configuration file saved on the C drive and I have written a batch file which is stored in the 'All Users/Start Menu/Startup' directory (which executes every time any user on the computer logs in), however this only works for the account which created the configuration file. • Unattended installation for windows 7 x86

  Are there any pre-created Autounattend.xml files for Windows 7 unattended installation x86? I have been experimenting and creating the XML file but I am always being prompted to choose which hard disk to format. I can't seem to add in the script to automate that process. I tried adding the DiskConfiguration portion but the installation keeps giving me error that my diskID is incorrect. How do I resolve this issue? Is there any pre-created Autounattend.xml file that automates everything? I want it to work for VMware virtual machine. Currently, VMware creates its own default disk. So RT Seven Lite only works for normal computer and not VMware.

• Windows 7 Laptop, cursor jumping after typing the letters "y" or "t" [closed]

  My wife has an HP laptop running windows 7. She has a very frustrating problem when typing: in some, but not all cases, typing the letter's "y" or "t" will cause the cursor to jump back a few lines or some number of words. The result is that she ends up typing over whatever it was that she was working on. (as a matter of fact, I just experienced this while typing this question on her computer with the phrase: "typing the letter..." above.) I've installed the latest drivers for her touchpad from Synaptic and disabled tap touching and gesture features to rule out simple unintended mouse clicks. Still the "y" and "t" keys continue to cause problems.

• Win7 and Ubuntu refuse to coexist

  I'll make this quick: I have an HP laptop with win7, I installed Ubuntu on a separate partition, and when I tried to boot win7 from grub I got the loading screen and no progress-ever. I did a /fixmbr with the windows recovery cd and got back windows, but wiped out grub and my access to Ubuntu. I reinstalled grub from the Ubuntu live usb ( I know I did this correctly) and now windows won't boot, again. I'm a linux noob at a loss. Your wisdom is greatly appreciated! Update in response to Scott Severance: your instructions say to determine the main partition on my computer. I'm not sure what this means... my windows partition is at sda2, my boot partition is at sda1, and my linux root partition is at sda7... Which is the "main" partition? UPDATE: I determined that you were probably referring to the linux root(/) partition, because this was the only partition for which I could follow your instructions without errors. Now, Windows is booting fine (thanks to /fixmbr), but even after the grub instructions there is no grub. It boots straight into windows.

  Hey there, a friend of mine gave me a printer/scanner because he could not print with it anymore. the point is this thing has been lying in the cellar for quite some time now and the cables are missing. that is the power cable for my power plug ( there are foreign ones included) and more importantly the connection to the computer. • Windows 7 spins up HDD when files should be on SSD

  I run 64-bit Windows 7 Ultimate off a Corsair 12GB SSD (cmfssd-128gbg2d) and I've got two older HDDs I use for storing media. However even though the operating system and all the programs are installed on the SSD, frequently when I'm starting programs, I can hear the computer spin up one of the HDDs before the app starts and I'm not sure why (and I don't know which drive it is). For programs that should open very quickly - Programmer's Notepad, Calculator (the basic one that comes with Windows), etc. - having to wait several seconds sometimes can be pretty obnoxious. Avoiding wait times like that are why I got the SSD in the first place. Is there any way to tell why that's happening? I'm happy to provide more information but I'm not sure what's important. Any help would be really appreciated!

• Need a GUI app for group policy login script

  I wrote a C# 4.0 application that works on a Windows computer but when using Group Policy to set it as a login script, it does not run. The application is being called from the same location and using rsop.msc shows that the application should be run. I see that using C# 4.0 may be a little overkill for this purpose, but it just seems wrong to write a VB6 application to do the same thing. The requirements for the application states that there need to be specific GUI elements that can't be just text on the window. I need larger fonts and color elements. Is there something more appropriate (and current) that I should be using?

• Is it possible to host a website with Apache HTTP through a ZyXEL EQ-660R modem and a Netgear WGT624v3 wireless router?

  Essentially, I have a spare desktop computer I'd like to turn into a web server, but my modem and wireless router are very difficult to work with. I installed Apache HTTP and successfully hosted a test page which can be accessed anywhere on the LAN. However, I'm having trouble setting up the server to be accessed from my external IP address. I was supplied with a ZyXEL EQ-660R DSL modem by my ISP (CenturyLink) and bought a Netgear WGT624v3 wireless router in which to connect my laptop and spare desktop. ZyXEL's website is no help, and I don't think much of the problem is with the Netgear router. I've played with many settings and have tried to forward port 80 from the modem, but I've had no luck. Could someone direct me toward a solution or recommendations for more promising hardware? Or should I admit defeat and explore other hobbies? :)

• iSCSI drives suddenly inaccessible or corrupted

  I have two NAS (Seagate Black Armors) connected to our network through iSCSI to a Dell Optiplex 760 running 32-bit Windows 7 and Windows iSCSI Initiator. For some unknown reason within the last week both are reportedly inaccessible and/or corrupt (that is the error message generated when I attempt to open the on the iSCSI computer). However, connecting to either of them via direct IP goes off without a hitch. I've tried Error checking but received "The disk check could not be performed because Windows could not access the disk." I've tried System Recover to a date almost two weeks back thinking Windows update may have caused the issue but there is no change. Anyone have an explanation and/or a solution to get them reconnected? Thanks.

  Hello, I've been given a dedicated server. Unfortunately, I have no idea what to do / how to manage it. I have background in many fields on Computer Science but never got to focus on networking, server management, etc. What I'm asking is for recommended books, Basically, I would like to be able to be proficient and understand well how to manage domain names, zones, setting up mail servers, being able to install easily any web server, and such. Everything needed for proper server management through the shell. I will probably stick with Parallels, or Cpanel for a bit. But I dislike those, especially how it add a lot of intruding user accounts and configs on the file system. Thank you

• USB port not working

  Everytime I put pendrive in the USB port(all ports in my computer) it doesnt work especially when plug the USB Flash Drive, but after several hours it work again. But When I try to open this pen drive data on other computers, I'm able to open & work ... So definitely there is no problem with my pen drive. and I've enabled USB keyboard & mouse in Bios. • /etc/hosts in Windows 8.1 doesnt work like in Windows 7 [on hold]

  Last time when i installed Win7, i configured it to block some netbios names in LAN with hosts file. Something like this: 192.168.0.10 computer_name 192.168.0.10 computer_IP where 192.168.0.10 some ip-address in network, where user need to login to access it. So, when user trying to access computer_name via \\computer_name, he will redirect to 192.168.0.10 rather then going to computer_name. In Windows 8.1 I can't do this trick. I tried to disable Windows Defender, flushed DNS, nbtstat -R. Nothing works. When I pinging computer_name, IP address returning 192.168.0.10, but when I accessing it via explorer (\\computer_name\d$), it opening computer partitions. In Win7, when I trying to access \\computer_name, its trying to open 192.168.0.10 one. Maybe its not the best solution to do this, but it works in Windows 7.

  I am trying to install wamp server (following is the exact setup name) on windows 7, 64Bit OS. But it never starts, icon stays in orange color meaning some services did not start. wampserver2.2e-php5.3.13-httpd2.2.22-mysql5.5.24-x64 I have been searching from last 3hours but did not find any solution. Port 80 is not in use. In windows services, when I try to start wampapache service manually, it throws following error: Windows could not start the wampapache service on Local Computer. Error 1053: The service did not respond ot the start or control request in a timely fashion. apache_error.log is empty. Things use to work fine in windows XP. May be this is a repeated thread, but I did go through similar posts. But nothing worked! Please help!!

(I know all about data loss issues when power is gone). I haven't been up to date with the new types of memory sticks out there. What kind of memory should I get which is faster than average and not very expensive? I am buying a lot of ram so I am looking for memory that's above average but below high end if high end is very expensive. • Windows 7 network share issues w/XP & SBS 2K3

  Hi, my Windows 7 Ultimate 64 bit computer has issues when accessing SBS 2K3 or XP shares. 1) It will not automagically reconnect upon boot. I have a batch file that will do this that utilizes net use (yes I have /persist:yes, but it does not help) to re-map them. 2) After trying to use it for a few minutes, it will not work. Any attempt to access the drive letter that was mapped causes windows Explorer, or other apps. to lock up. These shares work fine from XP & Vista computers. When this happens the internet works fine, just the mapped drives do not work correctly.

• How can I create a bootable CD-ROM/USB Drive? (With NTFS + USB Drive support)

  My motherboard got fried and I was forced to get a new hardware set (MB+CPU+RAM) so in most likelyhood I'll need to reinstall my Windows 7. I usually follow procedure and put the OS on the primary partition and my data on a logical partition - so I can format the primary without concern - but this time I made a mistakte and left some crucial items on the primary partition. I want to create a bootable CD-ROM/USB Drive which can read NTFS so I can access this data. If booting via a CD-ROM, I would prefer being able to connect a disk-on-key/My Passport to the computer and be able to access it to transfer the data to it. How can I do it? (free 3rd party applications are most welcome)

  I am on OS X and have a Windows 8 Consumer Preview x64 image. My computer doesn’t have a CD drive (MacBook Air). I have a 4 GB USB drive. I want to restore that image to the USB drive. There are many tools to do that on Windows, but I can’t finger out how to do it in OS X. Please note that I can’t run a VM, as my Air is a limited use machine. What I’ve tried: Simply restore to USB. Convert the image to img and use dd. These don’t work. How do I go about doing this?

• Friend wants to return an iMac with Lion in it. How does he remove his personal info / do clean install?

  I have a Mac, but not Lion, and it seems like a lot has changed with Lion. He wants to return the computer. I told him doing a clean install will make it like new, but he says you can't download a bootable disk image from the appstore to do this. He doesn't want to torrent it because he thinks the store will know it's a ripped version. Is there a way for him to remove his Admin account so that none of his personal info remians on the machine?
