• Start a screen through svcadm with Solaris 11

  I am running into a problem when trying to start a detached screen through a Solaris 11 service. This service controls nginx. When I reboot the system, the screen doesn't start, but if I issue svcadm disable nginx then svcadm enable nginx manually, it does. The rest of the init script functions correctly on a reboot (the nginx daemon starts, etc). The part of the service that triggers the screen looks like this: case "$1" in start) echo "Starting Nginx Logger: \c" /usr/bin/screen -S nginxLogger -d -m /opt/php-5.3.10/bin/php $loggingProg LogRetVal=$? [ $LogRetVal -eq 0 ] & echo "ok" || echo "failed" .... The log (/var/svc/log/network-nginx\:default.log) shows that $LogRetVal is returning 0, and $loggingProg is just pointing to a PHP script. If it matters, when I manually restart the service, I'm logged in as root. I'm unsure how to check if it's a permission issue (I'm new to Solaris, I've recently switched from CentOS/RHEL).

• Site-to-Site PPTP VPN connection between two Windows Server 2008 R2 servers

  We have two Windows Server 2008 R2 machines, one in our main office and one in a new office which we have just moved offsite. The main office has previously been handling client-to-server PPTP VPN connections. Now that we have moved our second server out of office, we want to set up a demand-dial or persistent VPN connection from the second server to the primary. Using a custom setting RRAS profile, we have successfully managed to set up a site-to-site VPN connection so that from the second server itself, it can access any of the devices in the main office and communicate back. However, any connected machines in the second office cannot use this connection, even when using the second server as gateway. The demand-dial interface is setup from the Second Server dialing into Main Server and a static route set up on RRAS for 192.168.0.0 with subnet mask 255.255.0.0 pointing down this network interface. The main office has the network of 192.168.0.0/16 (subnet mask 255.255.0.0). The second office has the network of 172.16.100.0/24 (subnet mask 255.255.255.0). What steps do we need to take to ensure traffic from the second office PCs going towards 192.168.x.x addresses use the VPN route? Many Thanks in advance for any help the community can offer. • Organizing Connections with Folders in Oracle SQL Developer

  How many Oracle databases do you work with on a regular basis? I’m guessing the answer for most of you lies between 1 and 500. This post is really geared for those of you who deal with more than just a handful (5) of database connections. Filters are nice when you need to work with a subset of table data, or even a list of tables. So why wouldn’t they be just as useful for organizing your connections? Here’s my complete list of databases: The folders aren’t there by default, you add them as you need them. Now this isn’t an overly large connection list. But when I need to fire up an impromptu demo for a customer, it’s very nice to be able to drill down into JUST those ‘safe’ environments. This actually saves me a few seconds every time I need to connect to one of my databases. So while it’s a very simple feature, it’s one of those things that I recommend EVERYONE take advantage of as it will save them hours of time over the long haul. Easier to find means I get to work a few seconds faster. This also helps me from making mistakes in ‘production’ environments! How to Add a Connection Folder Select a connection you want to organize. Mouse-right-click, and choose ‘Add to folder.’ You can throw it into a new container or an existing one. Lather, rinse, and repeat as necessary. The only trick is remembering to right-click! • Unable to remove "Run this program as an administrator" (greyed out) with Excel 2010

  I have issue with one of the user in Terminal Server 2008 R2 who has "Run this program as an administrator" checked and greyed out with Excel 2010. This causes UAC to popup requesting for administrator credential whenever user want to start excel. I found in excel 2010 properties Compatibility tab "Run this program as an administrator" is checked and greyed out (Unable to make any change) This issue only occurs in Excel 2010, all other Office programs does not has this option checked and greyed out. Currently UAC is set to Default (Second level to top) Other users in terminal server do not have "Run this program as an administrator" checked and it is NOT greyed out. The user who has issue is in the same group and has the setting as other users who doesn't has the issue in AD. Could anyone advise me how could I remove this "Run this program as an administrator" in option in Excel 2010? Thank you.

  I'm getting the above mentioned error when backing up with ZRM, which is using mysqldump for backup. mysqldump --opt --extended-insert --single-transaction --create-options --default-character-set=utf8 --user=" " -p --all-databases "/nfs/backup/mysql01/dailyrun/20091216043001/backup.sql" mysqldump: Error 2020: Got packet bigger than 'max_allowed_packet' bytes when dumping table TICKET_ATTACHMENT at row: 2286 I have increased the size for 'max_allowed_packet' to be 1G in /etc/my.cnf which is the server setting and for the client side setting I've set it by running this command: mysql -u -p --max_allowed_packet=1G And I have verified that on the client and server side they are of the same value. This is to check the client side value according to this forum posting http://forums.mysql.com/read.php?35,75794,261640 mysql SELECT @@MAX_ALLOWED_PACKET - ; +----------------------+ | @@MAX_ALLOWED_PACKET | +----------------------+ | 1073741824 | +----------------------+ 1 row in set (0.00 sec) And this is the check the server value setting. mysql SHOW VARIABLES | max_allowed_packet | 1073741824 | I have ran out of ideas, and tried searching within expert exchange and googling for solutions but so far none has worked. • Functional Languages that compile to Android's Dalvik VM?

  I have a software problem that fits the functional approach to programming, but the target market will be on the Android OS. I ask because there are functional languages that compile to Java's VM, but Dalvik bytecode != Java bytecode. Alternatively, do you know if the dx utility can intelligently convert the .class files generated from functional languages like Scala? Edit: In order to add a bit more helpfulness to the community, and also to help me choose better, can I refine the question a bit? Have you used any alternate languages with Dalvik? Which ones? What are some "gotchas" (problems) that I might run into? Is performance acceptable? By that, I mean the application still feels responsive to the user. I've never done mobile phone development, but I grew up on constrained devices and I'm under no illusion that there is a cost to using non-standard languages with the platform. I just need to know if the cost is such that I should shoe-horn my approach into default language (i.e. apply functional principles in the OOP language).

• Advanced file compression software for Mac OSX

  Back when I used Windows, I always used WinRAR for file compression and decompression. It had a fair amount of options like 'just storage' vs 'hard compression', password protection and archive type. Now that I use Mac OSX, the only compression possibility I have is the default Finder's Compress to Zip. I downloaded the most popular decompression software "Unarchiver". But this app can't compress other archive types either. I went for a search but there seem to be hardly any good advanced compression tools that work nice in OSX and have the options WinRAR has. (WinRAR works in OSX but command line only, I'm looking for something with a GUI.) Any ideas? I strongly prefer freeware. I found Archiver and StiffIt, but they are both commercial.

• How can I get rid of / hide :2eDS_Store files on my linux netatalk server?

  I'm running a netatalk server process on my linux server that serves files up to Mac client machines. Whenever you use Mac's Finder to access foreign filesystems over netatalk, it creates '.DS_Store' files to store information about the folder. Normally, these files would be hidden by default, and I wouldn't care. Unfortunately, netatalk doesn't allow access to local hidden files, so when the Mac writes and reads these, it renames them :2eDS_Store on the local filesystem. When you have a deep tree, you end up with these littered all over the place, and other Windows and Linux clients have to deal with them. How do I make these available to Mac clients and hidden from everyone else?

• How to find the static ip address of my router? [migrated]

  I bricked my Linksys WRT54GS router when trying to change the firmware on it from dd-wrt to open-wrt. In order to unbrick it, I need to be able to do an ftp transfer to it. The problem is that it isn't using DHCP addressing and I can't just use the default ip address of 192.168.1.1. I have to use the ip address it was set at before it got bricked. The problem is I forgot what that number was. Is there some program or script that can find it out?

• Start Debugging in Visual Studio

  Every developer is familiar with hitting F5 and debugging their application, which starts their app with the Visual Studio debugger attached from the start (instead of attaching later). This is one way to achieve step 1 of the Live Debugging process. Hitting F5, F11, Ctrl+F10 and the other ways to start the process under the debugger is covered in this MSDN "How To". The way you configure the debugging experience, before you hit F5, is by selecting the "Project" and then the "Properties" menu (Alt+F7 on my keyboard bindings). Dependent on your project type there are different options, but if you browse to the Debug (or Debugging) node in the properties page you'll have a way to select local or remote machine debugging, what debug engines to use, command line arguments to use during debugging etc. Currently the .NET and C++ project systems are different, but one would hope that one day they would be unified to use the same mechanism and UI (I don't work on that product team so I have no knowledge of whether that is a goal or if it will ever happen). Personally I like the C++ one better, here is what it looks like (and it is described on this MSDN page): If you were following along in the "Attach to Process" blog post, the equivalent to the "Select Code Type" dialog is the "Debugger Type" dropdown: that is how you change the debug engine. Some of the debugger properties options appear on the standard toolbar in VS. With Visual Studio 11, the Debug Type option has been added to the toolbar If you don't see that in your installation, customize the toolbar to show it - VS 11 tends to be conservative in what you see by default, especially for the non-C++ Visual Studio profiles. • Setting up shared connection

  I have a network that is connected to the internet via a switch connected to a router. I have it setup like this so I can work on the new network without causing problems on the old. Anyway, I'm trying to enable internet connection sharing. Internet comes to server like this: Modem - Router - Switch - Ubuntu 11.10 (Eth0) I want to share the connection through Eth1 (Eth1 - Managed Switch - Clients). Here is my config for /etc/network/interfaces: I have a DHCP server running on Eth1. • Screen lock broken when using separate x screens

  For some reason, the screen lock appears to be broken when I use separate x screens (it works fine if I use twin view or just one monitor, though). If I wait for the screen to lock (or if I tell it to lock), it fades to black, showing only the mouse cursor. However, when I move the mouse to bring up the password prompt, nothing happens, the screens remain completely blank. Furthermore, it would appear that the screen lock never activated in the first place, for two reasons: one, if I blindly enter my password and press enter, nothing happens; and two, if I press ctrl+alt+delete and then enter it logs me out (which shouldn't happen if the password prompt is there, right), losing any progress I have on any of the open programs (meaning, not a very friendly option for a programmer ;) ). So yeah, does anyone know why this is happening, and how to fix it? Thanks! Notes: I am using Ubuntu 11.10 64 bit. I am using gnome-classic, but the same problem occurs when I use unity. I do not have xscreensaver, nor do I have any screen savers running (except, I guess for the default blank one).

• Ethernet card not detected on Ubuntu Server 12.04

  My onboard ethernet isn't detected after a re-install of Server 12.04. For reasons I won't get into here, I had to put the server's drive into another machine to install Ubuntu, then swap back into the server. So the server starts up fine, except for the "Waiting for network configuration". I read in another article that Server, by default, doesn't handle new mac addresses for hardware changes dynamically, unlike Ubuntu Desktop, but a look at /etc/udev/rules.d/70-persistent-net.rules shows only one ethernet interface. Shouldn't it show both the old, and the new? lspci -vv shows an ethernet interface, so what the heck is going on? I should mention that the onboard LAN is enabled in the BIOS. And I know this isn't important, but all this started when I changed some network configuration settings in webmin before the re-install. It couldn't download any updates, so I tinkered a little. Broke, it, installed FreeNAS, which worked, but I didn't like it, then went back to Ubuntu Server, and now I'm in this pickle. Thanks for any advice!

• Change Win7 desktop background via Win2k3 Group Policy

  I'm experiencing some strange behavior: I have set the following policies: User Configuration\Administrative templates\Desktop\Active Desktop Enable active desktop [enabled] Active Desktop Wallpaper [set to local path -- quadruple checked; path is correct] Allow only bitmap wallpaper [disabled] gpupdate /force, log out, log back in, and the background is just black. • Copying Firefox profile

  My computer (well, Windows XP) failed. I got everything off the HD, including my Firefox profile, which I especially wanted because I had lots of open unsaved tabs in my current session (yes, I know that's bad practice!), but also to rescue bookmarks etc. I've now got Windows 7, and reinstalled Firefox. I've read the instructions on the Firefox website about creating new profiles, and I'm not sure they're very intuitive. It says that you can copy all the contents from an old profile into a new 'default' one, which I have done (http://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/back-and-restore-information-Firefox-profiles). However, when I open Firefox, the data from this profile isn't being used and Firefox doesn't seem to recognise the data that's there. What am I doing wrong?!

• Windows Explorer view style via GPO or registry edit

  I'm having some difficulty adjusting the default view style in windows explorer (e.g. list, detail, large icon, small icon). There does not seem to be any pre-baked GPOs for this and next to no documentation on the subject outside of using GUI configuration tools built into windows explorer. Does anyone know the specific registry keys that need to be edited for this? I've already taken a look at HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Streams\Settings but the adjustments I've made there don't seem to make any change on their own.

• What are the consequences of giving an AD domain differing NetBIOS and DNS names?

  In the past, when creating AD domains, I've used the common convention of using a sub-domain of the company's publicly registered domain name, e.g "corp.mycompany.com" or "int.mycompany.com". I've always accepted the default NetBIOS name when running DCPromo, for fear that creating a NetBIOS name that differs from the sub-domain may cause complications. I've recently been doing a bit of research on the consequences of providing an alternate NetBIOS name. The main reasons behind this are: The NetBIOS name isn't particularly descriptive or unique to the company Apparently generic NetBIOS names such as "CORP" or "INT" can cause issues when merging IT systems (although I've not had experience with this myself) Providing something "before the slash" that means more to users (less important) In looking at the possible downsides, the only one I can come up with is the disjointed namespace issue when configuring Exchange. Can anybody with more experience than I elaborate on my findings at all? Many thanks

• How to restore jump list for Windows Explorer pinned taskbar icon?

  I pinned Windows Explorer's icon to my taskbar months ago, and all worked fine, including jump lists. Note: I changed the default Explorer's folder using the usual trick of changing the GUID in the shortcut. Now, all of a sudden, the jump list is empty, and dropping folders on the pinned icon does not produce any effect, nor recently-opened folders show up in the list (although in the taskbar options I made sure to have it remember recently open items). How can I restore the original functionality, given that all other pinned applications jump lists work correctly? I'm running Windows 7 Ultimate x64, updated with the latest patches. The OS is in US English and my locale is Italian-Italy.

• Http 400 'Bad Request' and win32status 1450 when larger messages are sended to a WCF service

  we sometimes receive Http 400 bad request resultcodes when posting a large file (10mb) to a WCF service hosted in IIS 6. We can reproduce this using SOAP UI and it seems that it is unpredictable when this happens. In our WCF log the call is not received, so we believe that the request does not reach the ASP.NET nor WCF runtime. This happens on multiple websites on the same machine each having their own application pool. All IIS settings are default, only in ASP.NET and WCF we allow bigger readerQuota's etc.... The win32status that is logged in the IIS log is 1450 which we think means "error no system resources". So now the question: a) how can we solve this b) (when a is not applicable :) ) which performance counters or logs are usefull to learn more about this problem? greetings, Tim

• Sharepoint 2007: Edit vs Read Only Mode

  Sorry about the title, dont' really know what it should be. If I open a doc in read only mode I'm able to press save and then it opens up a save as box and the default directory is the directory on the sharepoint server and if you press save you save it to the server. This actually makes the whole process not really "read only" mode since I could actually update the document. Is there a way to prevent this from happening so that if someone chooses read only there is no way possible to updload any changes back to the sharepoint site? Also, it has been suggested as a solution to get rid of the edit/read only option so that people have to check out the document. Is there a way to remove the edit/read only option on documents?

• Cannot convert parameter 1 from 'short *' to 'int *' [closed]

  I'm trying to learn pointers and since I recently learned that short int takes up less memory [2 bytes as apposed to the long int's memory usage of 4 which is the default for int] I wanted to create a pointer that uses the memory address of a short integer. I'm following a tutorial in my book about Pointers and it's using the Swap function.
