There are a ton of free recorded conference presentations online… Microsoft TechEd Let’s start with the proverbial 800 pound gorilla. Recent TechEds have recorded the majority of presentations and made them available online the next day.   • Eclipse juno: Can't install RadRails throws error for a gem I have installed already

    The thing is I installed Ubuntu 12.04, Java (for Eclipse), Eclipse, ruby, ruby gems, rails. Everything went smooth. When I tried to prepare Eclipse for ruby on rails, I installed ruby dev kit plugin. This worked, but RadRails failed with this error: Cannot complete the install because one or more required items could not be found.     In the next few lines, I will be providing a brief review of Wrox’s Professional ASP.NET Design Patterns by Scott Millett. Design patterns have been a hot topic for many years as developers looked to do more with less, re-use as much code as possible by creating common libraries, as well as make their code easier to understand, extend and collaborate on. Scott Millett’s book covered classic and emerging patterns in a practical presentation that demonstrated with thorough examples how to put each pattern to use in the context of multi-tiered ASP.NET applications. The author’s unique approach and content earned him much kudos in the foreword by Scott Hanselman as well as online reviews. The book has 14 chapters of which 5 are dedicated to a comprehensive case study. Patterns covered therein include S.O.L.I.D, Gang of Four (GoF) as well as Martin Fowler’s Patterns of Enterprise Applications.   • How can architects work with self-organizing Scrum teams?

    An organization with a number of agile Scrum teams also has a small group of people appointed as "enterprise architects". The EA group acts as control and gatekeeper for quality and adherence to decisions. This leads to overlaps between the team decision and EA decisions. For instance, the team might want to use library X or want to use REST instead of SOAP, but the EA does not approve of that. Now, this can lead to frustration when team decisions are overruled. Taken far enough, it can potentially lead to a situation where the EA people "grabs" all power and the team ends up feeling demotivated and not very agile at all. The Scrum guides has this to say about it: Self-organizing: No one (not even the Scrum Master) tells the Development Team how to turn Product Backlog into Increments of potentially releasable functionality. Is that reasonable? Should the EA team be disbanded? Should the teams refuse or simply comply?

    One of Ops Center's most useful features is its asset monitoring capability. When you discover an asset - an operating system, say, or a server - a default monitoring policy is applied to it, based on the asset type. This policy contains rules that specify what properties are monitored and what thresholds are considered significant. Ops Center will send a notification if a monitored asset passes one of the specified thresholds. But sometimes you want different assets to be monitored in different ways. For example, you might have a group of mission-critical systems, for which you want to be notified immediately if their file system usage rises above a specific threshold. You can do so by creating a new monitoring policy and applying it to the group. You can also apply monitoring policies to individual assets, and edit them to meet the requirements of your environment.     i've registered a domain, and went to create a google apps account with that. but google told me they don't accept .ir domains, possibly trying to prevent us from building bombs (which completely makes sense), or simply lack of interest. anyway. so now i'm seeking for a way to use gmail, but with my own domain name, all without using google apps. i've added my domain to a free dnspark.net account, and it doesn't have mail forwarding, but i can set MX records. is there anyway i could accomplish my task? or is it completely impossible?

  • Handling Coding Standards at Work (I'm not the boss)

    I work on a small team, around 10 devs. We have no coding standards at all. There are certain things that have become the norm but some ways of doing things are completely disparate. My big one is indentation. Some use tabs, some use spaces, some use a different number of spaces, which creates a huge problem. I often end up with conflicts when I merge because someone used their IDE to auto format and they use a different character to indent than I do. I don't care which we use I just want us all to use the same one. Or else I'll open a file and some lines have curly brackets on the same line as the condition while others have them on the next line. Again, I don't mind which one so long as they are all the same. I've brought up the issue of standards to my direct manager, one on one and in group meetings, and he is not overly concerned about it (there are several others who share the same view as myself). I brought up my specific concern about indentation characters and he thought a better solution would be to, "create some kind of script that could convert all that when we push/pull from the repo." I suspect that he doesn't want to change and this solution seems overly complicated and prone to maintenance issues down the road (also, this addresses only one manifestation of a larger issue). Have any of you run into a similar situation at work? If so, how did you handle it? What would be some good points to help sell my boss on standards? Would starting a grass roots movement to create coding standards, among those of us who are interested, be a good idea? Am I being too particular, should I just let it go? Thank you all for your time. Note: Thanks everyone for the great feedback so far! To be clear, I don't want to dictate One Style To Rule Them All. I'm willing to concede my preferred way of doing something in favor of what suits everyone the best. I want consistency and I want this to be a democracy. I want it to be a group decision that everyone agrees on. True, not everyone will get their way, but I'm hoping that everyone will be mature enough to compromise for the betterment of the group. Note 2: Some people are getting caught up in the two examples I gave above. I'm more after the heart of the matter. It manifests itself with many examples: naming conventions, huge functions that should be broken up, should something go in a util or service, should something be a constant or injected, should we all use different versions of a dependency or the same, should an interface be used for this case, how should unit tests be set up, what should be unit tested, (Java specific) should we use annotations or external config. I could go on.

Now I would like to have a user-two@localhost (etc) relay via google with their own respective passwords. Is that possible?

  • Problems Using CloudFlare On Blogger

    Here's the situation. I got a TLD for my blogger blog and set it up using the instructions from blogger. Blogger asks to: Add two CNAME records. For the first CNAME, where it says Name, Label or Host enter "www" and where it says Destination, Target orPoints To enter "ghs.google.com" . For the second CNAME, enter "NHRILA4K2RJG" as the Name and "gv-GQMUMYGHAMJWECXFLJXVXABIV23C55JIPNIAVD5IGFSXT653O5GA.domainverify.googlehosted.com." I did that on my domain host, and everything was working smoothly. Here's the things that happened: Typing myblog.blogspot.com in the address bar brought me to my new address www.mynewaddress.tld Typing my newaddress.tld brings me to www.mynewaddress.tld Now, I went through the instruction to setup CloudFlare and did everything as required. I saw that CloudFlare is active and working on my TLD www.mynewaddress.tld, however, when I am typing the blogspot address, i.e. myblog.blogspot.com, it's showing a notice that the blog is not hosted on blogger and that I should click "yes" to get redirected to the new website. However, the blog is still on blogger. I think the problem might be with this particular CNAME record Google asks to create, which I did not find imported to the CloudFlare nameservers: For the second CNAME, enter "NHRILA4K2RJG" as the Name and "gv-GQMUMYGHAMJWECXFLJXVXABIV23C55JIPNIAVD5IGFSXT653O5GA.domainverify.googlehosted.com." So I create that CNAME and added it to the CloudFlare panel. My question is - is that what will help Google determine that my blog is still hosted on Blogger? If so, should I turn off CloudFlare for that particular CNAME record or turn it on? Any help is very much appreciated :)

  • Setting a Static IP Running FreeBSD8 in VirtualBox hosted on Windows 7

    I'm using VirtualBox on Windows 7 (host) to run a FreeBSD (guest) based web server. I`ve assigned a static ip of 192.168.80. 1 to the (virtualized) NIC which is run in bridged mode. The problem is that when I ping an external server (such as google.com) I get a No route to host error: dimetro# ping google.com PING google.com (66.249.90.104): 56 data bytes ping: sendto: No route to host ... I can ping the BSD server from both another virtualized machine and my host machine and from the server, I can ping everything on the network. The router ip is 192.168.1.1/16. ADDENDUM: I have the following lines in /etc/rc.conf on the BSD VM to configure networking: defaultrouter="192.168.1.1" ifconfig_em0="inet 192.168.80.1 netmask 255.255.0.0"

  • Is there any descent open-source search engine solutions?

    Few weeks ago my friend asked me how hard is it to launch your own search engine service with list of websites that suppose to be crawled time to time. First what come at my mind was Google Custom Search however pricing policy is quite tricky and would drain your budget if you reach 500K queries per year. Another solution I found here was SearchBlox, which can be compared to Google Mini service. It's quite good solution if you planing to cover search over small amount of websites but for larger projects it is not very handy. I also found few other search platforms like Lucene, Hadoop and Xapian which seems to be quite powerful solutions to reach Google search quality, and Nutch as a web crawler. As most of open-source projects they share same problem, luck of comprehensive guidance of usage, examples and it's expected that you are expert in this subject. I'm wondering if any of you using this solutions, which of them would you recommend, and what should I be aware of?
