• Localize WiX installer which uses the Firewall extension

  I've got a WiX installer project which uses MSBuild to generate the MSI file. The WXS file includes the WiX firewall extension: xmlns:fire="http://schemas.microsoft.com/wix/FirewallExtension" I've defined two cultures in the MSBuild file with the following definition: <PropertyGroup> ... <Cultures>en-us;no-no</Cultures> </PropertyGroup> I've also added the translated resources: <ItemGroup> <EmbeddedResource Include="lang\Firewall_no-no.wxl" /> <EmbeddedResource Include="lang\WixUI_no-no.wxl" /> </ItemGroup> These represents translation to Norwegian for the Firewall extension and the WixUI extension. When I run the build it succeeds with the en-us part, but the no-no part fails with the following error messages: C:\delivery\Dev\wix30_public\src\ext\FirewallExtension\wixlib\FirewallExtension.wxs(19): error LGHT0102: The localization variable !(loc.WixSchedFirewallExceptionsInstall) is unknown. Please ensure the variable is defined. .... Couple of issues: I don't know where the C:\delivery directory comes from. I don't have such a directory. The localization variables referenced in the error message have been translated in the Firewall_no-no.wxl file. When I run MSBuild with more detailed information I see the following output right before the error message: Task "Light" Command: C:\Program Files (x86)\Windows Installer XML v3\bin\Light.exe -cultures:no-no -ext "C:\Program Files (x86)\Windows Installer XML v3\bin\WixUIExtension.dll" -ext "C:\Program Files (x86)\Windows I nstaller XML v3\bin\WixUtilExtension.dll" -ext "C:\Program Files (x86)\Windows Installer XML v3\bin\WixFirewallExtension.dll" -loc lang\Firewall_no-no.wxl -loc lang\WixUI_no-no.wxl -out F:\Projects\MyProd\MyProj\Installer\bin\Debug\no-no\MyInstaller.msi -pdbout F:\Projects\MyProd\MyProj\Installer\bin\Debug\no-no\MyInstaller.wixpdb obj\Debug\MyProj.wixobj As the details show, the MSBuild task results in having two -loc parameters to the Light executable. Not sure if that would be the reason for this problem. Any ideas on how to solve this?

• AWS Amazon EC2 - password-less SSH login for non-root users using PEM keypairs

  We've got a couple of clusters running on AWS (HAProxy/Solr, PGPool/PostgreSQL) and we've setup scripts to allow new slave instances to be auto-included into the clusters by updating their IPs to config files held on S3, then SSHing to the master instance to kick them to download the revised config and restart the service. It's all working nicely, but in testing we're using our master pem for SSH which means it needs to be stored on an instance. Not good. I want a non-root user that can use an AWS keypair who will have sudo access to run the download-config-and-restart scripts, but nothing else. rbash seems to be the way to go, but I understand this can be insecure unless setup correctly. So what security holes are there in this approach: New AWS keypair created for user.pem (not really called 'user') New user on instances: user Public key for user is in ~user/.ssh/authorized_keys (taken by creating new instance with user.pem, and copying it from /root/.ssh/authorized_keys) Private key for user is in ~user/.ssh/user.pem 'user' has login shell of /home/user/bin/rbash ~user/bin/ contains symbolic links to /bin/rbash and /usr/bin/sudo /etc/sudoers has entry "user ALL=(root) NOPASSWD: ~user/.bashrc sets PATH to /home/user/bin/ only ~user/.inputrc has 'set disable-completion on' to prevent double tabbing from 'sudo /' to find paths. ~user/ -R is owned by root with read-only access to user, except for ~user/.ssh which has write access for user (for writing known_hosts), and ~user/bin/* which are +x Inter-instance communication uses 'ssh -o StrictHostKeyChecking=no -i ~user/.ssh/user.pem user@ sudo ' Any thoughts would be welcome. • ASP.NET MVC in a subfolder (only) on godaddy

  Okay, I have read many of the routing posts concerning putting asp.net mvc on godaddy. However, I have not come to a solution to my current problem. I am trying to publish an ASP.NET MVC application to a subfolder on godaddy. I have upgraded the account to use IIS 7 and I have included the MVC dlls in \bin\ deployment method. However, I suspect that my route is not correct. Currently, my routes are set up with the standard out of the box route: public static void RegisterRoutes(RouteCollection routes) { routes.IgnoreRoute("{resource}.axd/{*pathInfo}"); routes.MapRoute( "Default", // Route name "{controller}/{action}/{id}", // URL with parameters new { controller = "Home", action = "Index", id = "" } // Parameter defaults ); } I have a subdomain set up so that it looks like office.domain.com. The subdomain is pointing at a folder "/office/" which is right off the root folder. (There is not an MVC application installed in the root folder). All of my application has been placed in this 'office' folder. When I hover over the links however, the 'office' portion shows up in the link as well. e.g. Hovering over a link to the customer controller, index action yields "office.domain.com/office/Customer" as the target. This link then gets a 404 when I attempt to go to it. What should my route be to fix this? Is there something I have neglected in setting up the subdomain in godaddy? Is this something I just can't do in godaddy's domain management "tool". Do I need to set up a virtual directory for this instead of just a directory? Update: I changed the IIS settings in godaddy to use integrated pipeline mode, per this discussion and I am no longer getting 404 errors. The application worked just fine as suggested it would.

• Using Crypt function Python 3.3.2

  In Windows and Python version 3.3.2, I try and call the python module like so: hash2 = crypt(word, salt) I import it at the top of my program like so: from crypt import * The result I get is the following: Traceback (most recent call last): File "C:\none\of\your\business\adams.py", line 10, in <module> from crypt import * File "C:\Python33\lib\crypt.py", line 3, in <module> import _crypt ImportError: No module named '_crypt' However, when I execute the same file adams.py in Ubuntu, with Python 2.7.3, it executes perfectly - no errors. I tried the following to resolve the issue for my Windows & Python 3.3.2 (though I'm sure the OS isn't the issue, the Python version or my use of syntax is the issue): Rename the directory in the Python33 directory from Lib to lib Rename the crypt.py in lib to _crypt.py. However, it turns out the entire crypt.py module depends on an external module called _crypt.py too. Browsed internet to download anything remotely appropriate to resemble _crypt.py It's not Python, right? It's me...(?) I'm using syntaxes to import and use external modules that are acceptable in 2.7.3, but not in 3.3.2. Or have I found a bug in 3.3.2?

• ASP.NET MVC 3: RouteExistingFiles = true seems to have no effect

  I'm trying to understand how RouteExistingFiles works. So I've created a new MVC 3 internet project (MVC 4 behaves the same way) and put a HTMLPage.html file to the Content folder of my project. Now I went to the Global.Asax file and edited the RegisterRoutes function so it looks like this: public static void RegisterRoutes(RouteCollection routes) { routes.RouteExistingFiles = true; //Look for routes before looking if a static file exists routes.MapRoute( "Default", // Route name "{controller}/{action}/{id}", // URL with parameters new {controller = "Home", action = "Index", id = UrlParameter.Optional} // Parameter defaults ); } Now it should give me an error when I'm requesting a localhost:XXXX/Content/HTMLPage.html since there's no "Content" controller and the request definitely hits the default pattern. But instead I'm seeing my HTMLPage. What am I doing wrong here? Update: I think I'll have to give up. Even if I'm adding a route like this one: routes.MapRoute("", "Content/{*anything}", new {controller = "Home", action = "Index"}); it still shows me the content of the HTMLPage. When I request a url like ~/Content/HTMLPage I'm getting the Index page as expected, but when I add a file extenstion like .html or .txt the content is shown (or a 404 error if the file does not exist). If anyone can check this in VS2012 please let me know what result you're getting. Thank you.

• grep --exclude/--include syntax (do not grep through certain files)

  I'm looking for the string "foo=" (without quotes) in text files in a directory tree. It's on a common Linux machine, I have bash shell: grep -ircl "foo=" * In the directories are also many binary files which match "foo=". As these results are not relevant and slow down the search, I want grep to skip searching these files (mostly JPEG and PNG images): how would I do that? I know there are the --exclude=PATTERN and --include=PATTERN options, but what is the pattern format? manpage of grep says: --include=PATTERN Recurse in directories only searching file matching PATTERN. --exclude=PATTERN Recurse in directories skip file matching PATTERN. Searching on grep include, grep include exclude, grep exclude and variants did not find anything relevant If there's a better way of grepping only in certain files, I'm all for it; moving the offending files is not an option, I can't search only certain directories (the directory structure is a big mess, with everything everywhere). Also, I can't install anything, so I have to do with common tools (like grep or the suggested find). UPDATES: @Adam Rosenfield's answer is just what I was looking for: grep -ircl --exclude=*.{png,jpg} "foo=" * @rmeador's answer is also a good solution: grep -Ir --exclude="*\.svn*" "pattern" * It searches recursively, ignores binary files, and doesn't look inside Subversion hidden folders.(...)

I tried regular svn commands on the command line first: C:\temp\CheckoutDir> svn status -v I see all subdirs, all the files that are already checked in, a few new files labeled "?", nothing with the "L" lock indication C:\temp\CheckoutDir> svn add . --force This results in all new files in the subdirs ,that are already under version control themselves, to be added. I'd like to do the same using SharpSVN.   Hi, I want to show an image on a jasper report. I have the following on the .jrxml: <image> <reportElement x="181" y="0" width="209" height="74"/> <imageExpression class="java.lang.String"><![CDATA["logo.jpg"]]></imageExpression> </image> The image logo.jpg is in the same directory as the .jrxml. By just putting that it didn't work for me. I googled a bit and found out that jasper report considers what i put on the .jrxml as a relative path to the JVM directory and that to change this I need to pass as a "REPORT_FILE_RESOLVER" parameter a FileResolver that returns the file. So, I did the following in my .java (is located in same place as the .jrxml and the image) FileResolver fileResolver = new FileResolver() { @Override public File resolveFile(String fileName) { return new File(fileName); } }; HashMap<String, Object> parameters = new HashMap<String, Object>(); parameters.put("REPORT_FILE_RESOLVER", fileResolver); ...   Summary: One of our web applications requires write access to C:\Windows\Temp. However, no matter how much I weaken the NTFS permission, procmon shows ACCESS DENIED. Background (which might or might not be relevant for the problem): We are using OLEDB to access an MS Access database (which is located outside of C:\Windows\Temp). Unfortunately, this OLEDB driver requires write access to the user profile's TEMP directory (which happens to be C:\Windows\Temp when running under IIS 7.5), otherwise the dreaded "Unspecified Error" OleDbException is thrown. See KB 926939 for details. I followed the steps in the KB article, but it doesn't help. Details: This is the output of icacls C:\Windows\Temp. For debugging purposes I gave full permissions to Everyone.   I'm working on a S#arpArchitecture 1.5 project, which uses ASP.NET MVC 2. I've been trying to get areas to work properly but I ran into a problem: The ASP.NET MVC 2 routing engine matches the correct route to my area but then it generates an URL that belongs to the first registered area instead. Here's my request URL: /Framework/Authentication/LogOn?ReturnUrl=%2fDefault.aspx I'm using the Route Tester from Phil Haack and it shows: Matched Route: Framework/{controller}/{action}/{id} Generated URL: /Data/Authentication/LogOn?ReturnUrl=%2FDefault.aspx using the route "Data/{controller}/{action}/{id}" That's clearly wrong, the URL should point to the Framework area, not the Data area. • Grep failing with Emacs (windows), and GnuWin32 Grep

  Hi, I've downloaded and installed the GnuWin32 tools, and added the grep executables to the Emacs bin. I've also, for what its worth, added the GnuWin32 bin folder to my Path variable. Problem is though, when I try and run with suggested grep commands, I always get: Grep exited abnormally with code 53 at Wed Feb 24 17:16:12 For the life of me, I can't find any reference to error code 53 anywhere! :( I've tried the exact examples on a number of websites for example, when I enter: M-x grep <ret> It comes up with Run grep (like this): grep -n Which is fine, but I have no idea of what parameters it expects. I've tried some in some tuorials, but I get error code 53 again! One of the things I've tried is straight from the emacs wiki (http://www.emacswiki.org/emacs/GrepMode#toc2) (maybe not for the windows version though?) and it says to try this command: M-x grep -n -e setq ~/.emacs Which I've tried and I get: -*- mode: grep; default-directory: "c:/[My Directory]/" -*- Grep started at Wed Feb 24 17:30:47 grep -n -e setq ~/.emacs NUL Grep exited abnormally with code 53 at Wed Feb 24 17:30:47 So frustrating as this is meant to be a powerful feature of Emacs and I'm really trying to learn it as I've heard good things about it! • MVC controller is being called twice

  Hello, I have a controller that is being called twice from an ActionLink call. My home page has a link, that when clicked calls the Index method on the Play controller. An id of 100 is passed into the method. I think this is what is causing the issue. More on this below. If I leave the parameter in place, then the Index method is called with 100 as the id. After returning the View, the method is called a second time with a parameter of null. I can’t seem to figure out what is triggering the second call. My first thought was to add a specific route like this: routes.MapRoute( "Play", // Route name "Play/{id}", // URL with parameters new {controller = "Play", action = "Index"} // Parameter defaults ); This had no effect other than making a prettier looking link. • Changing an xcode project Path with lowercase path issue

  I have a problem with an Xcode project which has a path of "/users/me/blah" with a lowercase 'u'. When I check my other projects (in the General Tab of the Project Info Window the Path starts with a uppercase "Users". This causes a couple of problems. When I try and add an existing file which is "relative to group" or "Relative to Project" it thinks it needs to change directory all the way to the root. For example the path for any included file ends up as "../../../../Users/me/blah" which then prevents the project working on other peoples machine because the "relative" is essentially an absolute path... sigh. The other side effect is that when you select "Add Existing Files" instead of greying out all of the already included files, it leaves ALL of the files available for selection. Because it thinks files in "Users" are different to "users". I have tried re checking out the project into a different directory but no difference. I am not sure how I ended up with the wrong path in the first instance. No doubt something stupid that I did. Anyone have a clue on how I change the project path or resolve this? thanks

• How to require fullscreen mode in a jQTouch application?

  I'm using jQTouch to develop a version of a website optimized for safari on the iphone. The jQTouch demo helpfully shows how to show an "install this" message for users not using full screen mode and hide it for those who are. When in fullscreen mode, the body should have the class "fullscreen." So you can hide the "install this" message for people who have already added your app to their home page by adding this css rule to your stylesheet: body.fullscreen #home .info { display: none; } What I'd like to do is require users to use the app in fullscreen mode only. When viewed from the regular browser, they should only see a message asking them to install the app. That message should of course be hidden otherwise. This ought to be really, really easy, so I must just be missing something obvious. I thought one way to do this would be to simply test for the class "fullscreen" on the body: if it's not there, use goTo to get to another div, or hide the other divs, or something like that. Strangely, however, this doesn't work. As a test, I've still got the original "info" message, as in the jQTouch demo, and it doesn't show up when I launch in fullscreen mode. So the body must have the fullscreen class. And yet I can't find any other trace of it: when I put this alert to test things after the document has loaded, I get nothing when launching in fullscreen mode: alert($("body").attr("class")); I also thought I might test for fullscreen mode by checking for the value of the fullScreen boolean. But this doesn't seem to work either. What am I missing? What is the best way to do this?

  Hi, I'm currently maintaining an "old" system written in C#.net, removing some obsolete features and doing some refactoring. Thanks god, the previous guy wrote some unit tests (MSTests). I quite comfortable with JUnit tests, but didn't do yet much with MSTests. The test methods have a DeploymentItem attribute, specifying a text file which is parsed by the business logic method that is being tested and a 2nd DeploymentItem where just a path has been specified containing a bunch of TIF files that have to be deployed too. [TestMethod()] [DeploymentItem(@"files\valid\valid_entries.txt")] [DeploymentItem(@"files\tif\")] public void ExistsTifTest() { ... } The tests worked before, but now I had to change the names of the TIF files contained in the \files\tif directory. According to a rule, the TIF filenames have to match a certain pattern which is also checked by the ExistsTifTest() method. Now I had to change the filenames in order to adapt them to the new requirements and suddently the TIF files are no more being deployed as before. Can someone give me a hint why this happens or what may be the cause? The same thing happens also if I add a new text-file say "my2ndTest.txt" beside the "valid_entries.txt" in the \files\valid\ directory with the according DeploymentItem attribute on the test method. The file doesn't get deployed? I got the images now deployed by defining the deployment path directly in the testrunconfig, but I'd like to understand why these things happen or why for instance my new file "my2ndTest.txt" doesn't get deployed while the others do. Here's an example of how to do it for a function in Microsoft.Contracts: Create a directory called Microsoft.Contracts under the ExternalAnnotations ReSharper directory. • Connecting git to github on windows 7 without bash

  I'm setting up git on my new Windows 7 machine and I'm hitting a roadblock when it comes to getting github to acknowledge my ssh key. I am doing things a little different from the standard script in that I would rather not use cygwin and prefer to use my powershell prompt. The following is what I did: I installed msysgit (portable). I went to C:\program files\git\bin and used ssh-keygen to generate a public/private ssh keypair which I put in c:\Temp I then created a directory named .ssh\ in c:\Users\myusername\ (on windows 7) I moved both the files generated by the ssh-keygen (id_rsa and id_rsa.pub) into the .ssh directory I went to my account on github, created a new public key, copy-pasted the contents of id_rsa.pub into it and saved I now go to my powershell prompt, set-alias git 'C:\program files\git\bin\git.exe' I try to now do a clone [email protected]:togakangaroo/ps-profile.git which rejects my authentication: Permission denied (publickey). fatal: The remote end hung up unexpectedly Past experience says that this means git is not recognizing my key. What steps am I missing? I have a feeling that I need to somehow configure git so that it knows where my ssh keys are (though it would seem it should look there automatically) but I don't know how to do that. Another possible clue is that when I try to run git config --global user.name "George Mauer" I get an error fatal: $HOME not set I did however set up a HOME environment user variable with the value %HOMEDRIVE%%HOMEPATH%

• Ruby Gems Not Installing, Hangs While Getting Gems

  I recently cleared out all of my ruby install and installed form sources using the instructions at hivelogic I have have been able to install a few gems, but most of the time, "sudo gem install rails" hangs. I've added the -V flag, and it just seems to hang, I don't get any error. And the process can not be killed. I can only reboot to kill the process.   I've never programmed before and am trying to learn. I'm following that "coursera" course that I've seen other people post about — a course offered by Johns Hopkins on R programming. Anyway, this was supposed to be my first function. Yet, it doesn't work! But when I type out all the steps individually, it runs just fine...
