How can I extract data from Toshiba Satellite with a dead Windows installation?

I've got a Toshiba Satellite (unknown model number but bought early 2010) running Windows Vista which throws a kernel error on boot. We don't have the restore/recovery CD any more to restore the Windows partition. I have managed to boot to a Live CD version of Ubuntu 10.10 and have mounted the internal hard drive (which takes nearly 8 minutes). I suspect that the hard drive is malfunctioning, however, because copy tasks of even 30 megs of data to an attached and mounted USB flash drive takes over an hour, and some files are mysteriously inaccessible (not a permissions issue). When browsing folders, it takes many minutes to populate the folder window even with a single tiny file. During the copy tasks, the hard disk sounds like it tries to sleep several times in rapid succession, then continues accessing, it sounds, at full throughput. I initially tried using scp (from the shell) to copy data but I encountered the same local problems. I don't know the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard disk, either. Is there a more effective way of going about recovering the data on the internal disk, assuming that I can't use a recovery CD and am too cheap to bring it in (for now, at least)?

Datastage 8.7 installs fine on Window7 without any errors but it can not launch localhost:9080 web console

When I launch the web console, I get page can not be displayed error. What I have tried so far: I have re-installed DS about 7 times, and each time, I get same errors. I added entries in etc/hosts file for local host and my host name. I have turned off firewall. My hardware/software setup. My host system is window8.1. My vmware workstation is 7. The guest os is windows 7 enterprise x64. I have installed 10g, and given dba role to public. I have installed VS 5, and ms visual c++ 2010 express. I have installed msxml. IE version is 10. Firewall is off. My internet works fine It passed all the DS requirement tests and install completed successfully. When I launch my vmware guest instance, I do get SQL5000c error upon boot which I have tried to ignore in some installs and in some, I used db2systray -clean command to get rid of it. But that has not helped solve the webconsole connect failure to my host. I have spent over 2 weeks exclusively on this issue and badly need some help.

Win 7 64 with 8 gig of ram, getting running low on memory errors.

I have a new Dell laptop running Win7 64 with 8 meg of ram. If I leave the system running overnight I start getting low memory errors the next day. Looking at task manager it shows 6.27 gig used but looking at the processes list the totals don't show nearly that much. I am showing all processes from all users. I have also looked at the processes with PRocess Explorer and see the same results. Using resource monitor I see 4165 MB in Use, 2328 MB Modified and 1352MB Standby with only about 345 MB free. These numbers don't seem to add up to what I have running. I have Visual Studio 2010 running along with a number of IE8 sessions. I have run the same set of apps with XP SP2 32 bit with 4 gig of memory and never had this sort of problem. What is Modified memory? What is Standby memory? Any suggestions on what might be the issue and what might be a fix? TIA J

Symlink path can be followed manually, but `cd` returns Permission denied

I am trying to access the directory /usr/software/test/agnostic. There are several symlinks involved in this path. As you can see by the below transcript, I am unable to cd directly to the path, but I can check each step of the way and cd to the symlinked directories until I reach the destination. Why is this? (and how do I fix it?) How can I change the default program installation directory in Windows 7?

Windows 7 is installed on my C drive, which is quite small. I am very tired of instructing new programs to put their files on my larger D drive during installation; I would like to change the default drive. This article says that you can use a registry hack, but I am giving Microsoft the benefit of the doubt and naively assuming that a configuration option exists somewhere. It's 2010... do I really have to hack my registry to make a simple tweak like this? Also, there's a ServerFault question that explains how to move the "Users" directory and create a symlink, which could also work. However, at the moment I have some apps in C:\Program Files, some apps in C:\Program Files (x86), and some apps in the corresponding folders on D:\, so it would be a hassle. Also, my small OS boot drive is a 10k RPM WD Raptor, and I feel like that probably gives a speed boost to apps installed on it that need to read & write to their directories a bunch. I wonder if it actually matters.

Folder with files shows as empty

Last night I create a new project in Visual Studio 2010, in the folder c:\development\hobby\devices. When I navigate to that folder in a new instance of Windows Explorer, I get the 'This folder is empty.' message in the files pane. If I then, from within Visual Studio, issue the "Open containing folder command", explorer opens to the folder c:\development\hobby\devices\LoopBack, where loopback is a project under the main folder. If I paste that path into another new instance of explorer, explorer correctly opens c:\development\hobby\devices. How is this possible? SOLVED: This is what comes of typing paths instead of selecting them. Some elementary detective work yielded the following interesting results: C:\>dir dev*. Can't start my phpMyAdmin

"No such file or directory"?

Ok, so I have a VDS laying around, and I thought I would turn it into a TF2 game server. When I connect to my server through PuTTY, and use wget to download the package "hldsupdatetool.bin" from Steampowered.com. I go to run it and it says "No such file or directory found". When I use "ls" to see what files are in directory, it lists "hldsupdatetool.bin" as being in the directory. So, why is it saying it's not there? This has been a headache for the past 2 days. Deploying and publishing my first asp.net mvc 3 web application

I want to deploy and publish my first asp.net mvc 3 web application at my client side (the client is a small office with 2-4 employees that need to access the application) , currently i finished developing my web application using the free Microsoft Visual Web Developer 2010 express and the free SQL Server 2008 R2 Express database . So my concerns are :- 1. The free sql express database that i am currently using have a limitation of 10 GB i think So i want to buy SQL server for small business to remove the database limitations. So my questions that i need help with them are:- **1. If i use the sql server for small business then will my web application have other limitations on production i am unaware of ? 2. Will be using SQL server for small business my right choice? baring in my that the system will be used by 2-4 clients only? 3. How much does “approximate ” the sql server database will cost in US dollars? 4. Is it possible to use WinMerge inside Visual Studio 2008 and Visual Source Safe 6.0?

I would like to use WinMerge as the default diff tool inside VS2008 from the solutions explorer in place of the "Compare..." context menu item. Is this possible? I'm looking for a quick replacement of the current bland diff tool an I just like WinMerge better. I'm not interested in going to the folder explorer and doing the comparison there. Im using Visual Source Safe 6.0 not TFS Is this possible? Thanks in advanced!

TeamCity swap configuration files

Hi! I have been using CC.NET for a while and decided to try Team City. The initial and default configuration is very easy, but how do I swap configuration files after code is checked out and before unit tests are run. I am using TFS, NUnit. 1. When working locally I have configuration file pointing to local server. 2. On the build server TeamCity get's notification that I have checked-in code and builds new version. 3. Server runs unit tests When on 3rd step server runs unit tests I need to swap configuration files that are pointing to other servers, not the ones I am using locally. Silverlight tests not working unless RDP connection open

I have a few Silverlight UI tests that I'm automating with White. These tests are subsequently run by a TFS build agent, which is running interactively so it can access the desktop. The build passes if I have a Remote Desktop connection open to the build agent as the tests are run; I can see the mouse pointer moving around. When the test clicks on a HyperlinkButton navigation takes place, and is subsequently verified by assertions within the test. The build fails if I do not have a Remote Desktop connection open to the build agent as the tests are run. The Internet Explorer window is created and the Silverlight app loads, but no clicks happen; the application remains on the initial page and test assertions subsequently fail. Has anyone out there found a solution to this problem?

Automated builds of BizTalk 2009 projects using Team System 2008 Build

I'm trying to configure automated build of BizTalk 2009 projects using Team Foundation Server 2008. We have a staging server which has BizTalk 2009 installed. I ran the Team Foundation Server Build Setup on this server, and it can build non-BizTalk projects OK. However, BizTalk projects fail to build. I suspected something was amiss when "Deployment" was not a valid build type! I tried copying various things over from a developer PC which has BizTalk and Visual Studio 2008 installed, but still couldn't get it to work. I don't really want to install Visual Studio on the staging server, but without it the "Developer Tools and SDK" option in the BizTalk install is greyed out. I guess I need this in order for BizTalk projects to compile. So, my question is can a BizTalk 2009 server be used as a TFS build agent to build BizTalk projects without having Visual Studio installed. If the answer is no, what's the smallest part of VS that can be installed to get this to work? Thanks in advance.

I am looking for a free alternative to TFS. What would be the best alternative stack(source control, bug tracking, project management/planning, wiki, automated builds (ci))? Keeping in mind that it would be nice if they all integrated well. For example, it would be nice to be able to link bugs to source control, and then be able to link to a project plan and then be able to automate building. I do not have issues with using Microsoft project to manage project planing. I know i would like to use these....: SVN TeamCity NUnit But i am struggling to find a good Wiki/Project Planning/Bug tracking, that would integrate well. Any questions let me know.

How to use MSBuild to create ClickOnce files that match those created by Visual Studio

I am trying to use MSBuild in a TFS Build file to create click once files for my application. According to MSDN (http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms165431.aspx) it seems that the project file's click once settings should be used unless you override them with property arguments on the command line. However, even though I have specified (in VS) that some prerequisites should be bootstrapped in with the setup, they don't seem to get installed if I use the MSBuild command line to create the package, even though they do seem to get installed if I use Visual Studio to create the ClickOnce package. Please could someone advise me how to get my prerequisites to get installed via ClickOnce when the clickonce package is built using the MSBuild command line? For information, in Visual Studio, project properties, "Publish" tab, "Prerequisite" button, I have ticked "Create setup program to install prerequisite components", I have ticked my pre-requisites and I have specified "Download prerequisites from the component vendor's web site"

TFS2010: Single Server Deployment wizard, Bad sharepoint URLs

Hello Everyone I just installed TFS2010, and set it up with the single server wizard. It installed me Sharepoint Services an let everything working pretty well. But, the sharepoint URLs it generates from the Server name "server". As my setup is without a domain, the URLs work okay only from the server computer, not from the others. I have to give access to LAN clients, and Internet Clients, both connected thought my Public Ip. How can I change those sharepoint IPs from TFS to be generated From the IP, not from the Server's name?? Thanks in advance

Continuous Integration with Oracle Products

Hi, I'm currently working on a Datawarehouse project using an Oracle Database, Oracle Data Integrator, Oracle Warehouse Builder and some Jython thrown in for good measure. All of which is held within TFS. My background is .net and prior to this project was seeing a lot of promise in CI. I'm not suggesting that the testing element of CI is feasible in this instance, but I would like to implement a stable deployment strategy. What I'm trying to understand is whether or not I can build some NANT scripts that will allow me to deploy ODI\OWB\Oracle DB code to any given environment at any point. Has anyone tried this before? Are there more appropriate tools out there that lends themselves better to this sort of toolset? Am I just a crazy horse to be evening contemplating this? Any view would be greatly appreciated. Where does one get Visual Source Safe 2005?

I would like to install VSS 2005 so I can work on a project that is stored under it. Does anyone have any idea where the VSS 2005 client can be obtained? It does not appear to be on my VS2005 install disc (although that is for Team Suite). I cannot get any help from Google. I have an MSDN license (AA edition) but it doesn't seem to be there. This is a real product right? Just to clarify preemptively based on some of the discussions I see on Google when I search for things like "VSS 2005," I am aware of the flaws in VSS and I still need to get it working; I am not interested in converting the project to Subversion; I am not able to transfer it to TFS; I am not able to upgrade the project to VS2008. It is very annoying to find out that some of the files you have checked out and been working on are not in the same folder where you expect them to be (and it also pollutes the drive with a C:\SubProject1, C:\SubProject2 folders instead of keeping them all inside of C:\Work). Any recomendation to prevent VSS from doing this again and again. And yes, please, don't recomment switching to SVN, CVS, TFS etc - there are the rules I can't change.

Target not being executed when imported to the main *.proj file

I use the TFS 2008 build facilities. I have a large MSBuild project (TFSBuild.proj) and I wanted to split it into a few files because it is becoming hard to maintain. I found a strange behavior; when I extracted one of the targets (BeforeInitializeWorkspace) to a separate file and then imported it into the main *.proj file, it was not executed. Although, in my MSBuild log, there was information that the target has been imported and overridden, but hasn't been executed. If I have the same target defined in my main *.proj file, it is executed. Can someone explain why the target isn't executed when imported from a file? Thanks,

Unit testing custom controls in Silverlight

I have several custom controls (some kind of frames for content and layout management, like wrap panel), and would like to write unit tests for them. It's hard to find any good examples except Silverlight control toolkit, which has some helper classes to do unit tests and it's quite complicated. For MVVM classes it's easy to write tests because they don't use SL dependency system and infrastructure. Questions: how to unit test DepedenyProperty, what do I need to test how to test attached property do I test bindings with theme or UserControl, like simple textblock content binding, or command/event binding in MVVM with UserControl what else do I test in my custom controls, beside my business logic any good tutorial to achieve tests like those in control toolkit How do I start? Is SL controls toolkit only option for learning? For testing framework i'm using one from control toolkit, and for continuus integration on TFS build server I planned to use Statlight (from codeplex). Any advice on that?

How do you keep track of what you have released in production?

Tipically a deploy in production does not involve just a mere source code update (build) but requires a lot of other important tasks like for example: Db scripts (tables, query..) Configuration files (differents from test\production) Batch to schedule Executables to move to the correct path Etc. etc. In our company we just send an email to a "Release email address" describing the tasks in order, which changeset need to be published (TFS), which SP need to be updated, db scripts and so on. I believe there's not a magic tool that does these tasks automagically in order, rollback included; but probably there's something better than email that helps to keep track of releases in production. Do you have any tools to suggest or practices to share?
