• Ask for Budget vs. Give Proposal

  Should I ask a prospect what his budget is or just give out a price? He need: "a new web site, with nice effects but at same time very simple & funtional for my costumers & guests" It's a 5 page website for mp3 guided tour with 2-3 paragraphs of text on each page and 5-8 images on total + logo that needs redesign. It's my first 'over distance' job. (I don't know the guy personally and have never met him) Please let me know what is a good practice and how to proceed. P.S. Also what is an average price for Simple 5 page Flash website with some custom graphics. Thanks

• JPA and NoSQL using EclipseLink - MongoDB supported

  EclipseLink 2.4 has added JPA support for NoSQL databases, MongoDB and Oracle NoSQL are the first ones to make the cut. The support to other NoSQL database can be extended by adding a EclipseLink EISPlatform class and a JCA adapter. A Java class can be mapped to a NoSQL datasource using the @NoSQL annotation or <no-sql> XML element. Even a subset of JPQL and the Criteria API are supported, dependent on the NoSQL database's query support. The connection properties are specified in "persistence.xml". A complete sample showing how JPA annotations are mapping and using @NoSQL is explained here. The MongoDB-version of the source code can also be checked out from the SVN repository. EclipseLink 2.4 is scheduled to be released with Eclipse Juno in June 2012 and the complete set of supported features is described on their wiki. • Using Hadooop (HDInsight) with Microsoft - Two (OK, Three) Options

  Microsoft has many tools for “Big Data”. In fact, you need many tools – there’s no product called “Big Data Solution” in a shrink-wrapped box – if you find one, you probably shouldn’t buy it. It’s tempting to want a single tool that handles everything in a problem domain, but with large, complex data, that isn’t a reality. You’ll mix and match several systems, open and closed source, to solve a given problem. But there are tools that help with handling data at large, complex scales. Normally the best way to do this is to break up the data into parts, and then put the calculation engines for that chunk of data right on the node where the data is stored. These systems are in a family called “Distributed File and Compute”. Microsoft has a couple of these, including the High Performance Computing edition of Windows Server. Recently we partnered with Hortonworks to bring the Apache Foundation’s release of Hadoop to Windows. And as it turns out, there are actually two (technically three) ways you can use it. (There’s a more detailed set of information here: http://www.microsoft.com/sqlserver/en/us/solutions-technologies/business-intelligence/big-data.aspx, I’ll cover the options at a general level below)  First Option: Windows Azure HDInsight Service  Your first option is that you can simply log on to a Hadoop control node and begin to run Pig or Hive statements against data that you have stored in Windows Azure. There’s nothing to set up (although you can configure things where needed), and you can send the commands, get the output of the job(s), and stop using the service when you are done – and repeat the process later if you wish. (There are also connectors to run jobs from Microsoft Excel, but that’s another post)   This option is useful when you have a periodic burst of work for a Hadoop workload, or the data collection has been happening into Windows Azure storage anyway. That might be from a web application, the logs from a web application, telemetrics (remote sensor input), and other modes of constant collection.   You can read more about this option here:  http://blogs.msdn.com/b/windowsazure/archive/2012/10/24/getting-started-with-windows-azure-hdinsight-service.aspx Second Option: Microsoft HDInsight Server Your second option is to use the Hadoop Distribution for on-premises Windows called Microsoft HDInsight Server. You set up the Name Node(s), Job Tracker(s), and Data Node(s), among other components, and you have control over the entire ecostructure.   This option is useful if you want to  have complete control over the system, leave it running all the time, or you have a huge quantity of data that you have to bulk-load constantly – something that isn’t going to be practical with a network transfer or disk-mailing scheme. You can read more about this option here: http://www.microsoft.com/sqlserver/en/us/solutions-technologies/business-intelligence/big-data.aspx Third Option (unsupported): Installation on Windows Azure Virtual Machines  Although unsupported, you could simply use a Windows Azure Virtual Machine (we support both Windows and Linux servers) and install Hadoop yourself – it’s open-source, so there’s nothing preventing you from doing that.   Aside from being unsupported, there are other issues you’ll run into with this approach – primarily involving performance and the amount of configuration you’ll need to do to access the data nodes properly. But for a single-node installation (where all components run on one system) such as learning, demos, training and the like, this isn’t a bad option. Read up on the best ways to use Hadoop for a given workload, understand the parts, write a little Pig and Hive, and get your feet wet. Then sign up for a test account on HDInsight Service, and see how that leverages what you know. If you're a true tinkerer, go ahead and try the VM route as well.   HiI was doing some test with code first approach in EF. Then while populating the Gridview i was getting error like thisData binding directly to a store query (DbSet, DbQuery, DbSqlQuery) is not supported. Instead populate a DbSet with data, for example by calling Load on the DbSet, and then bind to local data. For WPF bind to DbSet.Local. • HTML favicon wont show on google chrome

  I am making a HTML page that is unpublished and that I just started. The first thing I wanted to do was add a favicon to appear next to the tile. I'm using google chrome an I noticed that other websites have favicons that appear next to the tile in the browser, but mine wont show up. I'm new to favicons. the site in in a folder on my desktop named site. • WD external hard drive not detected

  I am a beginner in Ubuntu. And I have just installed Ubuntu 11.10 in my Dell laptop. When I plugged my WD external hard drive in, it read the first time, but since I have a unlock.exe file (password for the hard drive). So I installed Wine to read it. But it gives me an error. I restart the machine, and plugged the hard drive in again. And it is not recognized anymore. Can anybody help me, please? Thank you!

• Cross-Browser Extension Installation now Possible with Opera and Google Chrome

  People have been curious if there would be cross-browser compatibility for extensions due to Opera’s recent switch to the browser engine that Google Chrome uses. That question has now been answered. The OMG! Chrome! Blog has put together a nice tutorial on how to get cross-browser extension compatibility set up and working with your browser of choice. While it is not surprising that the first steps in cross-browser extension compatibility have been taken, it will be interesting to see how it develops as the process is refined and further development occurs with the ‘new’ Opera. • Xubuntu dual monitor broke display

  After I used Settings Display to enable my second monitor, my first display is not working anymore either. So I enabled both, then clicked save configuration since it was working and boom it crashed. Now when I start up, I can see the screen which I type my password but it goes black after that! When I boot into recovery mode it works fine but in Settings Display I don't see HDMI at all to disable it. Is there anyway to restore all display setting to default? (I can Ctrl+ALT+F1 and type commands but xrandr returns no results over there) EDIT I should clarify that system bios is set to laptop display

• Authorship tag or Customer reviews to enhance click-through rate

  I was first using authorship tag on all the pages of my website. That gave me a pretty decent improvement in the click through rate. However, I have recently added ratings on my website, i.e. all my pages are being rated by the readers and the same has been made available to Google via rich snippets. The result being the image of the author from the google search results has been removed. It shows ratings given by the customers and just writes the name of the author. What will be its impact on the click-through rate ? Is it OK to have the ratings or should I switch back to only authorship tag as I was using in the past ? Please comment if I am unclear in asking my problem. Thanks :)

• Nautilus tags/labels/marks/columns for folders/files

  Is there any way how to mark folders or files with tags(or labels, new columns or whatever) in Nautilus? It would be nice to sort marked folders or files through this tags. Especially my first idea was to mark folders in my Movie directory with tags seen, not seen, must see, and so on. Then I realized it would be useful in any other workspaces with any custom tags... • No space on device

  Today I tried to move a huge directory to a common directory for 2 users. I first tried to change the permissions of my home directory. So something happened with my ~/.private directory and the disk was full! I have a 2 TB disk. I cannot make a backup, I cannot even enter graphics mode. Please help. Are there a way to restore my contents without making backup? Even creating ~/Private is impossible -- "no space on the device". I have no Private, and don't tell me that I have erased it, because it is not true. Are there some utilities to restore the files and make them not encrypted?

• Flash animations doesn't work

  I have a following problem: I have Ubuntu 12.04 installed on my Athlon 1800+ + 1 GB RAM + Nvidia Geforce4 MMX 440 (pretty old configuration) and everything works just fine except Flash Player in my Web browser (tried Firefox and Chromium). Instead of movie/animation, I get blank space. I updated my system via update manager, checked the plugins (everything OK), installed and updated flash player one more time, installed Ubuntu restricted extras, tried Firefox's Flash Aid, even tried Youtube Html 5 (still the same result)... Please, help me! I enjoy working with Linux and Ubuntu is the first that works for me well (after Open Suse and Fedora) but I have no idea what is wrong now...

• ASP.NET AJAX and my axe!

  So, I'm seriously considering axing ASP.NET AJAX from my future projects as I honestly feel it's too bloated, and at times convoluted. I'm also starting to feel it is a dying library in the .NET framework as I hardly see any quality components from the open-source community. All the kick-ass components are usually equally bloated commercial components... It was cool at first, but now I tend to get annoyed with it more than anything else. I'm planning on switching over to the jQuery library as just about everything in ASP.NET AJAX is often easily achievable with jQuery, and, more often than not, more graceful of a solution that ASP.NET AJAX and it has a much stronger open-source community. Perhaps, it's just me, but do you feel the same way about ASP.NET AJAX? How was/is your experience working with ASP.NET AJAX?

• Sound problems in Unity - input but no output

  I am new to Ubuntu, having just installed it for the first time on my Lenovo Thinkpad. Since I installed it I have no sound output whatsoever. However, I can see from the graphical interface in Sound Preferences Input that the sound input appears to be working correctly. • In MATLAB, how can 'preallocating' cell arrays improve performance?

  I was reading this article on MathWorks about improving MATLAB performance and you will notice that one of the first suggestions is to preallocate arrays, which makes sense. But it also says that preallocating Cell arrays (that is arrays which may contain different, unknown datatypes) will improve performance. But how will doing so improve performance because the datatypes are unknown so it doesn't know how much contiguous memory it will require even if it knows the shape of the cell array, and therefore it can't preallocate the memory surely? So how does this result in any improvement in performance? I apologise if this question is better suited for StackOverflow than Programmers but it isn't asking about a specific problem so I thought it fit better here, please let me know if I am mistaken though. Any explanation would be greatly appreciated :)

  My home page could be potentially linked as: http://example.com http://example.com/ http://example.com/?ref=1 http://example.com/index.html http://example.com/index.html?ref=2 (the same page is served for all those urls) I am thinking about defining a canonical url to make sure google doesn't consider those urls to be different pages: <link rel="canonical" href="/" /> (relative) <link rel="canonical" href="http://example.com/" /> (trailing slash) <link rel="canonical" href="http://example.com" /> (no trailing slash) Which one should be used? I would just slap / but messing with canonical seems like a scary business so I wanted double check first. Is it a good idea at all for defining a canonical url for a home page?

• Error mounting VirtualBox shared folders in an Ubuntu guest

  I have Ubuntu 10 as the guest OS on a Windows 7 machine. I have been trying to setup shares through VirtualBox, but nothing is working. First, I create the share in VirtualBox and point it to a Windows folder. Then I try to mount the drive in Linux, but I keep getting /sbin/mount.vboxsf: mounting failed with the error: Protocol error I have read so many solutions to this, but none seem to work. I have tried: Using the mount.vboxsf syntax Reinstalling VBox additions Rebooting Enabling and trying as root account I made a share called "Test" in VBox Shared folders. Then I made a directory in ubuntu named "test2". Then I tried to execute this command: sudo mount -t vboxsf Test /mnt/test2 Any other ideas?

• Changing Platform

  From time to time a developer makes a break from their platform of choice (.NET, Java, VB, Access, COBOL) and moves to perceived greener pastures. Zed Shaw did it, jumping from Ruby to Python, and Mike Gunderloy went from .NET to Rails. But it can be difficult to change platform. My clients don’t come to me looking for  a software developer, they come looking for a .NET developer. This is a tragic side effect of big software companies marketing. If your village is under attack by bandits, would you turn away the first seven samurai who offered to help because you didn’t like their swords? What matters is how effectively they can defend your village. You should not tell your carpenter what sort of hammer to use and you should not tell your software developer what platform to use.

• Single python file distribution: module or package?

  Suppose I have a useful python function or class (or whatever) called useful_thing which exists in a single file. There are essentialy two ways to organize the source tree. The first way uses a single module: - setup.py - README.rst - ...etc... - foo.py where useful_thing is defined in foo.py. The second strategy is to make a package: - setup.py - README.rst - ...etc... - foo |-module.py |-__init__.py where useful_thing is defined in module.py. In the package case __init__.py would look like this from foo.module import useful_thing so that in both cases you can do from foo import useful_thing. Question: Which way is preferred, and why? EDIT: Since user gnat says this question is poorly formed, I'll add that the official python packaging tutorial does not seem to comment on which of the methods described above is the preferred one. I am explicitly not giving my personal list of pros and cons because I'm interested in whether there is a community preferred method, not generating a discussion of pros/cons :)

• Looking for an open source project in Python

  I am looking for practical tasks to get experience with Python. Just reading the books and not doing any tasks in the language is not effective. I solved some problems on the Project Euler and TopCoder and it helped me to learn the syntax of the language better. But those tasks are hard algorithmically, but as a rule is quite simple from the point of view of programming. Now I'm looking for an interesting open source project in Python, participation in which will help me to better understand the OO-model of language. Although, this is my first step with Python, in general, I am an experienced programmer and I can be useful for a project. May be someone can suggest something?
