• A dacpac limitation – Deploy dacpac wizard does not understand SqlCmd variables

  Since the release of SQL Server 2012 I have become a big fan of using dacpacs for deploying SQL Server databases (for reasons that I will explain some other day) and I chose to use a dacpac to distribute my recently announced utility sp_ssiscatalog (read: Introducing sp_ssiscatalog (v1.0.0.0)). Unfortunately if you read that blog post you may have taken note of the following: Ordinarily a dacpac can be deployed to a SQL Server from SSMS using the Deploy Dacpac wizard however in this case there is a limitation. Due to sp_ssiscatalog referring to objects in the SSIS Catalog (which it has to do of course) the dacpac contains a SqlCmd variable to store the name of the database that underpins the SSIS Catalog; unfortunately the Deploy Dacpac wizard in SSMS has a rather gaping limitation in that it cannot deploy dacpacs containing SqlCmd variables. I think it is worth calling out this limitation separately in this blog post because its a limitation that all dacpac users need to be aware of. If you try and deploy the dacpac containing sp_ssiscatalog using the wizard in SSMS then this is what you will see: TITLE: Microsoft SQL Server Management Studio ------------------------------ Could not deploy package. (Microsoft.Data.Tools.Schema.Sql) ------------------------------ BUTTONS: OK ------------------------------ The message is quite correct. The SSDT DB project that I used to build this dacpac *does* have a SqlCmd variable in it called SSISDB: Quite simply, the Dac Deployment wizard in SSMS is not capable of deploying such dacpacs. Your only option for deploying such dacpacs is to use the command-line tool sqlpackage.exe. Generally I use sqlpackage.exe anyway (which is why it has taken me months to encounter the aforementioned problem) and have found it preferable to using a GUI-based wizard. • Does it matter to you that a software is "available source" but not "open source"

  You probably know the list of open source licenses officially approved by the OSI. Most notably I guess would be the GPL, MIT, [insert your favorite license here]. I recently ran into a project which although was open source (the creator made all source code available), was not officially open source under one of those official licenses. It released the source, but made no promise to release the source in the future. It allowed modification suggestions, but made no promises to accept patches and disallowed external distribution of externally-patched versions. It allowed the use of the software in commercial or paid projects, but disallowed the sale of the software itself. I suppose it could be called "available source" not open source as we like to think of it. I can see why the management team of a company wouldn't want to do business with this software. They can't fork it, they can't sell it, they can't create their own version of the software and distribute it or sell it. But would it matter to you as part of a software engineering team who's just using this software? I can still get my work done with it, I can use it in a project for which I'm paid (but I can't sell the software itself, which I'm not in the business of doing anyway), and I can make changes to the code to make it behave differently for my needs (but I can't make those modifications public), and if I do want those modifications officially made available to others, the approval is up to the project itself and they choose whether to incorporate them in an official release or not. So we know that a company that wants to base its business on this "available source" software can't do that, but as someone from the software engineering team, would those differences matter to you or do they seem less relevant? Curious what others think of this.

• Turn off Snap and Glue in MS Visio 2007 permanently

  Every time I create new drawing document in Microsoft Visio 2007, drawing options "Snap" and "Glue" are turned on by default. I find both of them particularly annoying, so every time I create a new drawing I open "main menu - Tools - Snap & Glue" and turn these options off for that particular document. Is there an option or setting to turn "Snap" and "Glue" off permanently for all new Microsoft Visio 2007 drawing documents? Update: Maybe there's some way to bithack executable file (EXE or DLL) in C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office12?

• Does it matter to you that a software is "available source" but not "open source"

  You probably know the list of open source licenses officially approved by the OSI. Most notably I guess would be the GPL, MIT, [insert your favorite license here]. I recently ran into a project which although was open source (the creator made all source code available), was not officially open source under one of those official licenses. It released the source, but made no promise to release the source in the future. It allowed modification suggestions, but made no promises to accept patches and disallowed external distribution of externally-patched versions. It allowed the use of the software in commercial or paid projects, but disallowed the sale of the software itself. I suppose it could be called "available source" not open source as we like to think of it. I can see why the management team of a company wouldn't want to do business with this software. They can't fork it, they can't sell it, they can't create their own version of the software and distribute it or sell it. But would it matter to you as part of a software engineering team who's just using this software? I can still get my work done with it, I can use it in a project for which I'm paid (but I can't sell the software itself, which I'm not in the business of doing anyway), and I can make changes to the code to make it behave differently for my needs (but I can't make those modifications public), and if I do want those modifications officially made available to others, the approval is up to the project itself and they choose whether to incorporate them in an official release or not. So we know that a company that wants to base its business on this "available source" software can't do that, but as someone from the software engineering team, would those differences matter to you or do they seem less relevant? Curious what others think of this.

• Start Debugging in Visual Studio

  Every developer is familiar with hitting F5 and debugging their application, which starts their app with the Visual Studio debugger attached from the start (instead of attaching later). This is one way to achieve step 1 of the Live Debugging process. Hitting F5, F11, Ctrl+F10 and the other ways to start the process under the debugger is covered in this MSDN "How To". The way you configure the debugging experience, before you hit F5, is by selecting the "Project" and then the "Properties" menu (Alt+F7 on my keyboard bindings). Dependent on your project type there are different options, but if you browse to the Debug (or Debugging) node in the properties page you'll have a way to select local or remote machine debugging, what debug engines to use, command line arguments to use during debugging etc. Currently the .NET and C++ project systems are different, but one would hope that one day they would be unified to use the same mechanism and UI (I don't work on that product team so I have no knowledge of whether that is a goal or if it will ever happen). Personally I like the C++ one better, here is what it looks like (and it is described on this MSDN page): If you were following along in the "Attach to Process" blog post, the equivalent to the "Select Code Type" dialog is the "Debugger Type" dropdown: that is how you change the debug engine. Some of the debugger properties options appear on the standard toolbar in VS. With Visual Studio 11, the Debug Type option has been added to the toolbar If you don't see that in your installation, customize the toolbar to show it - VS 11 tends to be conservative in what you see by default, especially for the non-C++ Visual Studio profiles.   We have migrated from SharePoint 2007 to 2010. Everything appears to be working correctly except for an intermitent error with search. • WP7 &ndash; Oh, You Wanted to Develop On Your New Phone? That&rsquo;ll Cost Ya!

  Had an interesting Twitter convo today about WP7 development. Question was raised on how to use a WP7 device as the deployment target from within VS.NET. Thinking that this would be an *obvious* question, I replied that you need to set the right value in one of the drop lists in the IDE… I did this, hooked up my device, then tried to run my app, just as a final test that it was as easy as I thought it would be. It wasn’t. So first, your phone can’t be locked, so make sure you unlock it. Also, don’t kill the Zune software when you notice it automagically started – its needed for VS.NET to deploy to your device. Finally, you need to register your device for development. Aiden Caine has a great article on what you need to do for this, but in a nutshell you need to launch the Windows Phone Developer Registration program found in the Windows Phone Developer Tools folder. Now, here’s the catch to all of this: You must have a Windows Phone AppHub account. As in paid account. That’s right – to do development on your actual device, you need to have a $99 ($120 in Canada) AppHub developer membership. Now, I get this – if Microsoft didn’t put this restriction, then they’d be back in Mobile 6.x land where anyone could install whatever app to whoever, whenever, and without any standards being upheld. This is the same thing that Apple does with their marketplace, its not something unprecedented. But, it is something that will be new to the majority of Microsoft developers that have lived without application restrictions for years.   The Portable Document Format (PDF) is a popular file format for documents. PDF files are a popular document format for two primary reasons: first, because the PDF standard is an open standard, there are many vendors that provide PDF readers across virtually all operating systems, and many proprietary programs, such as Microsoft Word, include a "Save as PDF" option. Consequently, PDFs server as a sort of common currency of exchange. A person writing a document using Microsoft Word for Windows can save the document as a PDF, which can then be read by others whether or not they are using Windows and whether or not they have Microsoft Word installed. Second, PDF files are self-contained. Each PDF file includes its complete text, fonts, images, input fields, and other content. This means that even complicated documents with many images, an intricate layout, and with user interface elements like textboxes and checkboxes can be encapsulated in a single PDF file. Due to their ubiquity and layout capabilities, it's not uncommon for a websites to use PDF technology. For example, when purchasing goods at an online store you may be offered the ability to download an invoice as a PDF file. PDFs also support form fields, which are user interface elements like textboxes, checkboxes, comboboxes, and the like. These form fields can be entered by a user viewing the PDF or, with a bit of code, they can be entered programmatically.   As you might know, I lived and worked on LI, NY for 11 years before relocating to South Florida. As I will be visiting my family who still live there in the first week of June, I couldn't resist reaching out to Dan Galvez, LI  .Net User Group Leader, and asking if he needed a speaker for June's meeting. Apparently the stars were lined up right and I am now scheduled to speak at my "home" group on June 3rd, which I am pretty excited about. Here is a brief abstract of my talk and speaker bio. What's New in MVC2 We will start by briefly reviewing the basics of the Microsoft MVC Framework. Next, we will look at the new features introduced in the latest and greatest MVC2. Many new enhancements were introduced to both the MS MVC Framework and to VS2010 to improve developers' experience and reduce development time. We will be talking about new MVC2 features such as: Model Validation, Areas and Template Helpers. We will also discuss the new built-in MVC project templates that ship with VS2010.   So I thought I would  change the name of my machine so that the other devs can find the TFS server easily. TFS 2005 would use the cool cmd line util tfsadminutil.....alas he is now gone HERE Are the steps to complete Edit the web.config and is usually located on default install C:\Program Files\Microsoft Team Foundation Server 2010\Application Tier\Web Services\web.config <add key="applicationDatabase" value="Data Source=JUSTIN\SQLI01;Initial Catalog=Tfs_Configuration;Integrated Security=True;" /> Next step is to edit previous Solutions/Projects 1) Open the Solution file i.e ProductApp.sln 2) Edit the SccTeamFoundationServer URL under Global section i.e Change this to new name   If you have DB server on same machine ...you will need to go in and remove existing db user account assigned to the tfs DB Remove old [%machine_name%] value i.e Tuned_Dev_PC_12\Justin user from the above DBs No add the new Justin\Justin user account associated with the new machine name to the TFS & Reporing dbs ... dbo or the TFSADMIN & TFSEXEC roles either will do in this case. (or add both ) Now either ReApply user or add New account (remove old account i.e Tuned_Dev_PC_12\justin) If DB permisions are setup correctyly you will get a screen that looks like this   If it pauses or gets stuck you need to look back at the adding correct DB Perms to the i.e JUSTIN\Justin user account Also if your project is still complaining about old TFS name 1) Team\Connect new Team Foundation Server 2) Add\Remove TFS 3) Add New TFS Name  Once you have connected to the new TFS server Reload your project from TFS..this way it removes a lot of the bugs that hang around in the local project\solution This is similar to a VSS2005 and older fix Cheers ( eta about 60-90 mins so weigh up the the need vs payoff. ) Shutdown restart

  Ad:: SharePoint 2007 Training in .NET 3.5 technologies (more information). Many years ago, at the last to last to last MVP summit, Microsoft was kind enough to share with us what they were thinking wayyyyyyyyyyyy ahead! I specially remember John Durant talking about the specific enhancements planned for SharePoint 2010 development experience. If you haven’t seen John Durant talking on stage, the guy has more enthusiasm than tiger woods in Amsterdam! The energy of his presentations is simply amazing. So, I pulled out my phone, and I snapped a picture! And, I emailed that picture to everyone in the MVP land, and Microsoft land, saying “We have evidence”, i.e. here are the promises that were made, and dammit we’ll see by the time you release SP2010 how many of these do you actually release. Here is the picture ladies and gentlemen -     It’s a good karate chop action shot isn’t it? Of course, we were all immediately warned not to share any of this seriously strictly NDA information at the time. Well, now that the information is out in the world, I can finally share now, this small tidbit of how far ahead Microsoft is thinking in their plans. Frankly, I wouldn’t be surprised, if today that they have a very clear idea what SharePoint vNext will be all about, or should I say vNextvNext? Have fun! Comment on the article ....

  Here are some step-by-step instructions regarding configuring SharePoint to sync with custom AD attributes:Add the custom attribute in Active DirectoryThis part will have to be your doing; here is some documentation regarding creating customattributes in AD:http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms675085(VS.85).aspxhttp://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/magazine/2008.05.schema.aspxhttp://blogs.technet.com/b/isingh/archive/2007/02/18/adding-custom-attributes-in-active-directory.aspx2. Open up the miisclient.exe (C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office Servers\14.0\Synchronization Service\UIShell\miisclient.exe)a. This will have to be opened up with the farm admin account3. Click on "Management Agents" in the ribbon4. Right-click the Active Directory Management Agent ("MOSS-<name of sync connection>") and click "Refresh Schema"a. When prompted, enter the credentials for the farm account5. Once complete, close out of miisclient.exe6. Go into Central Admin --> Application Management --> Manage Service Applications --> Go into the User Profile Service Application7. Click on "Manage User Properties"8. Click on "New Property"9. Put in the correct information regarding the attribute that was created10. At the bottom of this page, under the "Source Data Connection" drop down, select the AD synchronization connection you have already configured11. For the "Attribute" drop down, select the new attribute you have created12. For the "Direction" drop down, select "Import"13. Click "OK"14. Run a full synchronization for the user profile service application and the custom property will get synced (as long as the attribute is set in Active Directory for the desired users)
