  • GUI Application becomes unresponsive while http request is being done

    I have just made my first proper little desktop GUI application that basically wraps a GUI (php-gtk) interface around a SimpleTest Web Test case to make it act as a remote testing client. Each time the local The Web Test case runs, it sends an HTTP request to another SimpleTest case (that has an XHTML interface) sitting on my server. The application, allows me to run one local test that collates information from multiple remote tests. It just has a 'Start Test' button, 'Stop Test' button and a setting to increase/decrease the number of remote tests conducted in each HTTP Request. Each test-run takes about an hour to complete. The trouble is, most of the time the application is making http requests. Furthermore, whenever an HTTP Request is being made, the application's GUI is unresponsive. I am considering splitting the application into two, where: Test Controller Application - Acts as a settings-writer / report-reader and this writes to settings file and reads a report file. Test Runner Application - Acts as a settings-reader / report-writer and, for each iteration reads the settings file, Runs the test, then write a report. So to tell it to close down - I'd: Press the Stop Button on the 'Test Controller Application', which writes to the settings file, which is read by the 'Test Runner Application' which stops, then writes to the report file to say it stopped the 'Test Controller Application' reads the report and updates the status and so on... However, before I go ahead and split the application in two - I am wondering if there is any other obvious way to deal with, this issue. I suspect it is probably quite common and a well-trodden path. Also is there an easier way to send messages between two applications?

    I'm trying to write a C#/.NET application that optimizes the hard drives for our XP workstations Set pagefile to "No paging file" Reboot Run a defrag utility to optimize the data and apps Create a contiguous page file Reboot, run pagedefrag from Sysinternals I'm really struggling with #1. I delete the following key: SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Session Manager\Memory Management\PagingFiles Upon reboot, the System Control Panel shows "No page file", but c:\pagefile.sys still exists and its in use by the SYSTEM process so I can't delete it and I can't optimize HD. I tried using PendingFileRenamingOperations and that bombs out too. I tried using WMI: Win32_PageFileSetting, but that only lets you set sizes (not zero--defaults to 2MB). Of course, if I do the manual steps outlined above, it works. I think I need an API call to make this happen.

    Hi, How do I play video on SDK 3.2 (iPad)? Read many questions here but they talked mostly for iPhone. For example, the MoviePlayer example here http://developer.apple.com/iphone/library/samplecode/MoviePlayer_iPhone/Introduction/Intro.html That works on 3.1.3 but when I run it on 3.2, it doesn't work.     I am always looking to organize and make my resource bookmarks better and easiar to access when I need them. 1 thing I really like is code sharing sites, they let you enter in code and then give you a special link to give a friend or a user on this site even to show then code, This is a very useful tool I believe. So below is my list of code sharing sites, there is 4 on the list and they all have unique features. Some have syntax highlighting for multiple languages, some allow you to save your code as private and only share with the people you give the link to, and some even run the run and output any possible errors. Imagine I have a class that takes 1 argument like: public class ProductProvider : IProductProvider { public ProductProvider(string connectionString) { .... } } I need to specify the "connectionString at run-time when I get an instance of IProductProvider. I have configured StructureMap as follows: ForRequestedType<IProductProvider>.TheDefault.Is.OfConcreteType<ProductProvider>(). WithCtorArgument("connectionString"); However, I don't want to call EqualTo("something...") method here as I need some facility to dynamically specify this value at run-time. My question is: how can I get an instance of IProductProvider by using ObjectFactory? Currently, I have something like: ObjectFactory.GetInstance<IProductProvider>(); But as you know, this doesn't work... Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

    I have the following script which I use to give me a simple "diff" between tables on two different databases. (Note: In reality my comparison is on a lot more than just an ID) SELECT MyTableA.MyId, MyTableB.MyId FROM MyDataBaseA..MyTable MyTableA FULL OUTER JOIN MyDataBaseB..MyTable MyTableB ON MyTableA.MyId = MyTableB.MyId WHERE MyTableA.MyId IS NULL OR MyTableB.MyId IS NULL I now need to run this script on two databases that exist on different servers. At the moment my solution is to backup the database from one server, restore it to the other and then run the script. I'm pretty sure this is possible, however, is this likely to be a can of worms? This is a very rare task I need to perform and if it involves a large number of DB setting changes then I will probably stick to my backup method.

  • Fast single thread comet server, possible?

    I recently encountered a few cases where a server would distribute an event stream that contains the exact same data for all listeners, such as a 'recent activity' box. It occurred to me that it is quite strange and inefficient to have a server like Apache run a thread processing and querying the database for every single comet stream containing the same data. What I would do for those global(not per user) streams is run a single thread that continuously emits data, and a new (green)thread for every new request that outputs the headers and then 'merges' into the main thread. Is it possible for one thread to serve multiple sockets, or for multiple clients to listen to the same socket? According to this site (http://code.enthought.com/source/): it says to download the following python script: https://raw.github.com/enthought/ets/master/ets.py I put the ets.py into the python script, save as...and in the Python Shell, I typed in "import ets" However, nothing happens. Also, the site says to run the following commands: $ mkdir ets $ cd ets # and copy ets.py here $ python ets.py clone Typing those lines in Python Shell gives me the message: "SyntaxError: invalid syntax" As you can see, I'm new to Python, and I don't know what I'm doing. How do I download the ETS script and run the commands??

  • C++ to bytecode compiler for Silverlight CLR?

    I'd like to be able to compile a C/C++ library so that it runs within a safe managed runtime in the Silverlight CLR. There are several tools for doing this with the JVM that allows C++ code to run within a CRT emulation layer (see NestedVM, LLJVM, etc), which effectively allows C++ code to be run within a Java Applet. There's even a tool for this for the Adobe Flash VM (see Alchemy). However, I can't seem to find any tools like this for the CLR. fyi, the MSVC tools don't seem to allow for this: The /clr:pure flag will create C++ code that runs in the CLR, but it isn't safe (because the CRT isn't safe) and /clr:safe requires massive code changes (no native types, etc).

    Hey folks, I've got a really weird problem with a bi-directional relationship in jpa (hibernate implementation). A User is based in one Region, and a Region can contain many Users. So...relationship is as follows: Region object: @OneToMany(mappedBy = "region", fetch = FetchType.LAZY, cascade = CascadeType.ALL) public Set<User> getUsers() { return users; } public void setUsers(Set<User> users) { this.users = users; } User object: @ManyToOne(cascade = {CascadeType.PERSIST, CascadeType.MERGE}, fetch = FetchType.EAGER) @JoinColumn(name = "region_fk") public Region getRegion() { return region; } public void setRegion(Region region) { this.region = region; } So, the relationship as you can see above is Lazy on the region side, ie, I don't want the region to eager load all the users. Therefore, I have the following code within my DAO layer to add a user to an existing user to an existing region object... public User setRegionForUser(String username, Long regionId){ Region r = (Region) this.get(Region.class, regionId); User u = (User) this.get(User.class, username); u.setRegion(r); Set<User> users = r.getUsers(); users.add(u); System.out.println("The number of users in the set is: "+users.size()); r.setUsers(users); this.update(r); return (User)this.update(u); } The problem is, when I run a little unit test to add 5 users to my region object, I see that the region.getUsers() set always stays stuck at 1 object...somehow the set isn't getting added to.   • problem running system.net.webclient and process.start off a control event

    The following code causes my vs 2008 wpf project to hang, I'm not sure why. Both Part 1 and Part 2 work perfectly fine independently, but when I run them together on an control event (click a button for example) the program hangs. I've also tried shell execute for part 2 - same results. However, this code when run within the form loaded event works fine. Any insights would be truly appreciated.   • Are we asking too much of transactional memory?

    I've been reading up a lot about transactional memory lately. There is a bit of hype around TM, so a lot of people are enthusiastic about it, and it does provide solutions for painful problems with locking, but you regularly also see complaints: You can't do I/O You have to write your atomic sections so they can run several times (be careful with your local variables!) Software transactional memory offers poor performance [Insert your pet peeve here] I understand these concerns: more often than not, you find articles about STMs that only run on some particular hardware that supports some really nifty atomic operation (like LL/SC), or it has to be supported by some imaginary compiler, or it requires that all accesses to memory be transactional, it introduces type constraints monad-style, etc. And above all: these are real problems. This has lead me to ask myself: what speaks against local use of transactional memory as a replacement for locks? Would this already bring enough value, or must transactional memory be used all over the place if used at all?

    I was inspired by the good answers from my previous question about SQL. Now this SQL is run on a DB with Interbase 2009. It is about 21 GB in size. SELECT DistanceAsMeters, Bold_Id, Created, AddressFrom.CityName_CO as FromCity, AddressTo.CityName_CO as ToCity FROM AddrDistance LEFT JOIN Address AddressFrom ON AddrDistance.FromAddress = AddressFrom.Bold_Id LEFT JOIN Address AddressTo ON AddrDistance.ToAddress = AddressTo.Bold_Id Where DistanceAsMeters = 0 and PseudoDistanceAsCostKm = 0 and not AddrDistance.bold_id in (select bold_id from DistanceQueryTask) Order By Created Desc There are 840000 rows with AddrDistance 190000 rows with Address and 4 with DistanceQueryTask. The question is, can this be done faster? I guess, the same query is run many times select bold_id from DistanceQueryTask. Note that I'm not interested in stored procedures, just plain SQL :)

    If I create a String with [NSString StringWithFormat], do I have to [retain] it? My understanding is that convenience methods add the objects to autorelease pool. If that is the case, shouldnt we retain the object so that it doesnt get drained with pool at the end of the event loop?

    I've been a CF developer for 15 years and I've never run into anything this strange or frustrating. I've pulled my hair out for hours, googled, abstracted, simplified, prayed and done it all in reverse. Can you help me? A cffunction takes one string argument and from that string I build an array of "phrases" to run a query with, attempting to match a location name in my database. For example, the string "the republic of boulder" would produce the array: ["the","republic","of","boulder","the republic","the republic of","the republic of boulder","republic of","republic of boulder","of boulder"]. Another cffunction uses the aforementioned cffunction and runs a cfquery. A query based on the previously given example would be... select locationid, locationname, locationaliasname from vwLocationsWithAlias where LocationName in ('the','the republic','the republic of','republic','republic of','republic of boulder','of','of boulder','boulder') or LocationAliasName in ('the','the republic','the republic of','republic','republic of','republic of boulder','of','of boulder','boulder') This returns 2 records... locationid - locationname - locationalias 99 - 'Boulder' - 'the republic' 68 - 'Boulder' - NULL This is good. Works fine and dandy. HOWEVER... if the string is changed to "the republic", resulting in the phrases array ["the","republic","the republic"] which is then used to produce the query... select locationid, locationname, locationaliasname from vwLocationsWithAlias where LocationName in ('the','the republic','republic') or LocationAliasName in ('the','the republic','republic') This returns 0 records. Say what?! OK, just to make sure I'm not involuntarily HIGH I run that very same query in my SQL console against the same database in the cf datasource. 1 RECORD! locationid - locationname - locationalias 99 - 'Boulder' - 'the republic' I can even hard-code that sql within the same cffunction and get that one result, but never from the dynamically generated SQL. I can get my location phrases from another cffunction of a different name that returns hard-coded array values and those work, but never if the array is dynamically built. I've tried removing cfqueryparams, triple-checking my datatypes, datasource setups, etc., etc., etc. NO DICE WTF!? Is this an obscure bug? Am I losing my mind? I've tried everything I can think of and others (including Ray Camden) can think of. ColdFusion 8 (with all the latest hotfixes) SQL Server 2005 (with all the greatest service packs) Windows 2003 Server (with all the latest updates, service packs and nightly MS voodoo)

    I have a lovely ancient ergonomic keyboard (no name SK - 6000) connected via a DIN-ps/2 adapter to a ps/2-usb adapter to my docking station. After Grub it stops working. It takes either suspending and waking up or replugging it while Linux is running to get it to work. No extra kernel modules get loaded for this. When it works and I restart without power off, it will work immediately.   • AS3 mouseX and mouseY values wrong in Firefox

    Hi there, I'm getting some strange behaviour in my Flash movie, only in Firefox for MAC (3.6.2). Basically, the mouseX and mouseY properties of all display objects become massive numbers: < 100000000. This issue only occurs on Firefox, it is not present when the movie is run standalone, nor when it is run on any other browser. The swf requires Flash Player 10, and is written in AS3. It is also embedded via SWFObject, but I tested using the export code supplied with Flash and verified the issue is still present. Has anybody heard of this? Is it a Flash or Firefox bug? Is it a bug at all? Thanks

  • Setuptools Python namespace package in /opt

    I'm trying to get my app to install in /opt/[app_name] using setuptools. My app uses a namespace package. To install I run sudo python setup.py install --prefix=/opt/[app_name]/ --install-lib=/opt/[app_name]/ --install-scripts=/opt/[app_name]/ When I install it this was setuptools does not copy init.py in to my namespace package so when I come to run my app, python does not treat it as a package and I get import errors. if I create the init.py file my app works fine. How do I get setuptool to copy over the init.py file when using --install-lib and --prefix? Thanks Sam
