• Push notification or thread with timer

  Hi all, In my application, I'm having functionality like twitter that when you have not refreshed your screen, and if there're new messages then you get this message that "You have n new messages" and a refresh button, which on press will refresh the screen. I'm basically fetching all the data from an xml with some url. In case of thread, I need to call a timer after some time period which might affect the app performance. Can anybody please suggest wheather what will be better to use push notifications or thread with timer? Thanx in advance.

  Hello, I'm trying to use YQL's spelling and search suggestions, but as much as I try I cant find a way to change the language/region for the query, how is this done? I want to look for spelling/suggestions in spanish/mexico ("es-MX") I'm pretty happy with the results I get for queries in English, but when looking in Spanish I get no results: select * from search.suggest where query="dolor de cabeza" <?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8"?> <query xmlns:yahoo="http://www.yahooapis.com/v1/base.rng" yahoo:count="0" yahoo:created="2010-11-22T17:41:13Z" yahoo:lang="en-US"> <results/> </query> I've looked around for a way to change yahoo:lang="en-US" to yahoo:lang="es-MX" but I cant find andy documentation about it. • What is the best to format messages for queueing?

  I've been reading up on message queueing lately, and I'd like to implement a simple, extendable, system for my app. While there's a lot of good information on the subject of setting up a MQ system out there, I can't find a lot about the actual implementation. I'm looking for patterns and best practices on how to properly format messages for a queue, and ways to execute the jobs in PHP. Should I use JSON, serialized objects, text, URLs or XML? What information should I send? Is a worker with a switch($job['command']) {} (or something like that) the way to go, or are there any established patterns out there to implement a worker? Help greatly appreciated!

• Flash Media Server dynamic file naming

  I'm trying to figure out most efficient/safe way to name recorded streams on FMS. The case is to get listing of recorded streams from the server (eg. rec_001, rec_002...) and dynamically add rec_003 filename to the new stream that is being recorded. I'm thinking about either using FMS File Object and put everything in array of files every time I start recording procedure or to create XML file that would serve as a database of file names. I'm searching for a solution efficient for MULTIPLE connections at a time and large amount of files. Which one of presented would be the best for this purpose? Or do you have any better suggestions of solving this problem?

  I was working in a web site (production) in Tomcat 7, so now I created a copy of this website and change the hibernate.cfg.xml to work with another database ( testing ). <property name="hibernate.connection.url">jdbc:mysql://127.0.0.1:3306/test</property> <property name="hibernate.connection.username">fake</property> <property name="hibernate.connection.password">fake</property> However, when I open the new new site, everything is ok, but, is still working with the production database even when I changed the connection string. Anybody knows if I need to change another thing?. I missing something?. I am quite new in tomcat. Thanks in advance.

  I have a table which is built dynamically based on how much data is present, if at all. I want to be able to long press anywhere on a the table row to be able to get some options to delete or edit etc. Is this possible? Remember I need to do all this without setting any XML as its dynamically built. • How to customize JBoss AS7 404 page

  I already created a custom 404 page inside my web app deployed in JBoss AS 7.1. So if my app is at fubar dot com :8080/Myapp and I go to fubar dot com :8080/Myapp/xyzzy, I get the custom error page (defined in the web app's web.xml file). However, when I go to fubar dot com :8080/xyzzy, JBoss displays the default 404 page which discloses that it's JBoss and which JBoss version. I need to replace this page in order to hide this information. Please advise.

  Hi, I have a textview and a nine-patch image. Assigning this image in the xml editor to the tag "background" works as desired. Now I want to set this image dynamically in the coding, I thought myTextView.setBackgroundDrawable(mydrawable); would be the right thing to do. My png is in res/drawable. The API says that mydrawable needs to be an object of type drawable R.drawable.myninepatch is of type int. So my problem is that I have to convert from that int to a drawable somehow. Then I thought I can use a constructor NinePatchDrawable mydrawable = new NinePatchDrawable(); But I am again not able to construct such an object. Anyone an idea? Thanks.

• Worried about spiders repeatedly hitting high-demand page

  Due to some rather bizarre architectural considerations I've had to set up something that really ought to run as a console application as a web page. It does the job of writing a large variety of text files and xml feeds from our site data for various other services to pick up so obviously it takes a little while to run and is pretty processor intensive. However, before I deploy it I'm rather worried that it might get hit repeatedly by spiders and the like. It's fine for the data to be re-written but continual hits on this page are going to trigger performance issues for obvious reasons. Is this something I ought to worry about? Or in reality is spider traffic unlikely to be intensive enough to cause problems?

  Hello, I'm just setting out in android development. I want to make a kind of card based game. I'm just looking for suggestions really on how I might start it. I know I have to make the menu layout and view, then use an Intent from that to get to the main game view. My sticking points are: -There's going to be a deck of cards. It's going to be a set number so I was thinking I could just have each card defined as a button in the layout. I don't know if that is the right way to do it though. -Storage of card details. The ${label} part isn't being replaced by the build label like I expect. I'm expecting something like build.1 to show up in place of ${label}. How do I make this happen? I do have the default labelincrementer configured with a <labelincrementer /> tag in my project. Also, the CruiseControl documentation is absolutely awful. Is there better documentation anywhere?

• Setting a background drawable for a dialog?

  Hi, Tried posting this at android dev, wanted to go here too in case anyone knows. I'm trying to supply a custom background drawable for a dialog. I've created the following in my styles.xml file: <style name="CustomDlg" parent="@android:style/Theme.Dialog"> <item name="android:windowBackground">@drawable/my_background</item> </style> This works fine on 1.6+. On my g1 running 1.5 (and the 1.5 emulator) the drawable is used, but the area around the dialog is opaque black instead of being translucent. Is there something I'm missing here, or is this a bug with 1.5? Any work arounds? Is 1.5 just the ie6 of Android? Thanks

• Why does casting to double using "String * 1" fail? Will CDbl(String) work on all systems?

  I have an application which contains the line below to assign a parsed XML value to a variant array. V(2) = latNode.Text * 1 This works fine on my system (Windows 7, Excel 2010) but doesn't work on some other system or systems - and I've not been able to get a response from the user who reported the problem. I've switched out the offending line for: V(2) = CDbl(latNode.Text) This still works on my system, but then I had no problem in the first place. The question is on what systems does the first approach fail and why, and will the second method always work? I'm sure I've used the "Stying * 1" trick elsewhere before and would like to know how concerned I should be about tracking down other occurrences. Thanks.

  Whats the best way to deploy several customized versions of a Android application? Currently I have a script to exchange the resource folder for getting a customized version of my app. It works great, but all custom versions still have the same package name in the AndroidManifest.xml. Therefore it is not possible to install two customized versions of the app at the same time. This is one solution for this problem, but that has to be done by hand Can you think of a more easy solution, or how this could be built into a skript? (btw: it is not for a porn/spam/whatever app, not even a paid one)

  Hello, I'm using JNDIRealm with Tomcat for authentication, which at the moment works fine. However, we do not store any roles in the LDAP, so all authenticated users are not returning any roles. This sends user's to an HTTP 401 failed authorization page. I'd like to assign an "Admin" role to any and all user's who authenticate successfully. Here is my fragment from my web.xml file. SecurityConstraint Resource Resource *.jsp GET POST Admin FORM login.jsp loginError.jsp Admin Should I be using a JAASRealm with custom LoginModule? After the realm calls the authenticate() method and returns success, should I override another method to explicitly set the RolePrincipal to "Admin" so that authorization succeeds? Please help! • Suppress checking for changes on file system in Eclipse RCP

  Okay, I guess this question is too difficult, but it's worth a try. I have an eclipse RCP application that edits HTML-files. I deal with the content of the files only in a W3C-Dom representation. There is some stuff that I can not do with that, so I the program edits each file each time after it is saved (save, save as). Of course, the file is then out of synch with the file system, and the next time I touch it, eclipse complains: "The file has been changed on the file system. Do you want to replace the editor contents with these changes? (Yes/No)" I do not want to load the changes into the editor ("No") Maybe there is a way to tell Eclipse programmatically to not check that file for changes, or to configure it to not check for changes on any file? edit: Everything has to be done either programatically or by editing some XML files. I can not expect the user to do anything;-)

I'm a beginner and am making a calculator (fairly easy), but it's happening the following problem: When Cline in "1" button for example, he enters this number in the EditText, but if you click again the number is overwritten instead of the inserted his side as desired. How do the numbers were placed side by side without overwriting those already there? Note: The layout of buttons and etc. I did in. XML, so I'm not using the keyboard native Android. Thanks!

  I would like to arrange the menu items in my app so that one item appears in its own line, and the other 3 items appear below it. I know that this is possible because i have seen apps do it. I tried writing a menu xml with linear layouts to arrange the items, but this doesnt work. I have also tried putting them in different groups, but I had no luck with that either.
