• Jersey 2 in GlassFish 4 - First Java EE 7 Implementation Now Integrated (TOTD #182)

  The JAX-RS 2.0 specification released their Early Draft 3 recently. One of my earlier blogs explained as the features were first introduced in the very first draft of the JAX-RS 2.0 specification. Last week was another milestone when the first Java EE 7 specification implementation was added to GlassFish 4 builds. Jakub blogged about Jersey 2 integration in GlassFish 4 builds. Most of the basic functionality is working but EJB, CDI, and Validation are still a TBD. Here is a simple Tip Of The Day (TOTD) sample to get you started with using that functionality. Create a Java EE 6-style Maven project mvn archetype:generate -DarchetypeGroupId=org.codehaus.mojo.archetypes -DarchetypeArtifactId=webapp-javaee6 -DgroupId=example -DartifactId=jersey2-helloworld -DarchetypeVersion=1.5 -DinteractiveMode=false Note, this is still a Java EE 6 archetype, at least for now. • How to get the running of time of my program with gettimeofday()

  So I get the time at the beginning of the code, run it, and then get the time. struct timeval begin, end; gettimeofday(&begin, NULL); //code to time gettimeofday(&end, NULL); //get the total number of ms that the code took: unsigned int t = end.tv_usec - begin.tv_usec; Now I want to print it out in the form "**code took 0.007 seconds to run" or something similar. So two problems: 1) t seems to contain a value of the order 6000, and I KNOW the code didn't take 6 seconds to run. 2) How can I convert t to a double, given that it's an unsigned int? Or is there an easier way to print the output the way I wanted to?

I can't think of anything that I have changed that relates to this. Has nayone seen this error? Any ideas of what to try?

• Telerik RadAjaxManager and Mouse Events in Chrome

  Whenever I'm using Telerik's RadAjaxManager in Chrome, the events sent to any mouse events I'm using are passed as null. For instance, the following: <img id="Image1" src="image.gif" onclick="alert(event)" /> <rad:RadAjaxManager ID="RadAjaxManager1" runat="server"> <AjaxSettings> </AjaxSettings> </rad:RadAjaxManager> Alerts null when clicking the image. This does not happen in IE or FF. The version of the RadAjaxManager is 1.8.5.0. I'm guessing the problem does not occur in later versions, but an upgrade is not an option at the moment. I tried Telerik's support forum, but they didn't really provide any answer. What could cause such a problem? And how can it be dealt with?

• Same data being returned by linq for 2 different executions of a stored procedure?

  Hello I have a stored procedure that I am calling through Entity Framework. The stored procedure has 2 date parameters. I supply different argument in the 2 times I call the stored procedure. I have verified using SQL Profiler that the stored procedure is being called correctly and returning the correct results.   Following on from my question here, I'm trying to create a generic value equality comparer. • What's the purpose of GC.SuppressFinalize(this) in Dispose() method?

Isn't object destined for garbage collection once all instances cease from existence (like, when used in using() block)? What's the use case scenario where this would play important role? Thanks!

Right now I am getting "The system cannot find the file specified" on Assemblies referenced in my so called modules. I cannot really get how to use the AssemblyResolve event... The longer version I have one application, MODULECONTROLLER, that loads separate modules. These "separate modules" are located in well-known subdirectories, like appBinDir\Modules\Module1 appBinDir\Modules\Module2 Each directory contains all the DLLs that exists in the bin-directory of those projects after a build. So the MODULECONTROLLER loads all the DLLs contained in those folders using this code: byte[] bytes = File.ReadAllBytes(dllFileFullPath); Assembly assembly = null; assembly = Assembly.Load(bytes); I am, as you can see, loading the byte[]-array (so I dont lock the DLL-files). Now, in for example MODULE1, I have a static reference called MyGreatXmlProtocol. The MyGreatXmlProtocol.dll then also exists in the directory appBinDir\Modules\Module1 and is loaded using the above code When code in the MODULE1 tries to use this MyGreatXmlProtocol, I get: Could not load file or assembly 'MyGreatXmlProtocol, Version=1.0.3797.26527, Culture=neutral, PublicKeyToken=null' or one of its dependencies. The system cannot find the file specified. So, in a post (like this one) they say that To my understanding reflection will load the main assembly and then search the GAC for the referenced assemblies, if it cannot find it there, you can then incorparate an assemblyResolve event: First; is it really needed to use the AssemblyResolve-event to make this work? Shouldnt my different MODULEs themself load their DLLs, as they are statically referenced? Second; if AssemblyResolve is the way to go - how do I use it?   I'm not sure if this is possible, and I'm quite new to using assemblies in C#.NET. What I would like to do is to create an instance of a class when supplied the string name of that class. The new compiler error is this: Cannot convert type 'System.Runtime.Remoting.ObjectHandle' to 'MyAssembly.AbstractType' The line it references is this one: var myObject = (AbstractType) Activator.CreateInstance(null, myTypeName); Using .Unwrap() get's me past this error and I think it's the right way to do it (uncertain). However, when running the program I then get a TypeLoadException when this code is called. TypeLoadException: Could not load type ‘AbstractType’ from assembly ‘MyNameSpace'... Right away I can spot that the type its looking for is correct but the assembly it's looking in is wrong. Looking up the Activator.CreateInstance(String, String) method revealed that the null as the first argument means that the method will look in the executing assembly. This is contrary to the required behavior as in the original post. I've tried using MyAssembly as the first argument but this produces the error: 'MyAssembly' is a 'namespace' but is used like a 'variable' Any thoughts on how to fix this?

• How can I pass managed objects from one AppDomain to another?

  I have two assemblies that I'm trying to link together. One is a sort of background process that's built with WinForms and will be designed to run as a Windows Service. I have a second project that will act as a UI for the background process whenever a user launches it. I've never tried attempting something like this with managed code before, so I've started trying to use windows messages to communicate between the two processes. I'm struggling when it comes to passing more than just IntPtrs back and forth, however. Is there a better and cleaner way to go about something like this using an event driven model?

• DocumentFragment not appending in IE

  I have a select list which, when changed, pulls data via ajax and dynamically creates select lists. Then based on the data used to create the select lists (a type), I pull more data via ajax if i don't have it already and create the options for the select list and store them in a fragment. Then I append that fragment to the select list. This is zippy in FF3 and Chrome but either doesn't append the options at all or takes a long time (minutes) to append the options in IE7. • Can't find which row is causing conversion error

  I have the following table: CREATE TABLE [dbo].[Accounts1]( [AccountId] [nvarchar](50) NULL, [ExpiryDate] [nvarchar](50) NULL ) I am trying to convert nvarchar to datetime using this query: select convert(datetime, expirydate) from accounts I get this error: Conversion failed when converting datetime from character string. The status bar says "2390 rows". I go to rows 2390, 2391 and 2392. There is nothing wrong with the data there. I even try to convert those particular rows and it works. How can I find out which row(s) is causing the conversion error?

• Sequence Generators in T-SQL

  We have an Oracle application that uses a standard pattern to populate surrogate keys. We have a series of extrinsic rows (that have specific values for the surrogate keys) and other rows that have intrinsic values. We use the following Oracle trigger snippet to determine what to do with the Surrogate key on insert: 'IF :NEW.SurrogateKey IS NULL THEN SELECT SurrogateKey_SEQ.NEXTVAL INTO :NEW.SurrogateKey FROM DUAL; END IF;' If the supplied surrogate key is null then get a value from the nominated sequence, else pass the supplied surrogate key through to the row. I can't seem to find an easy way to do this is T-SQL. There are all sorts of approaches, but none of which use the notion of a sequence generator like Oracle and other SQL-92 compliant DBs do. Anybody know of a really efficient way to do this in SQL Server T-SQL? BTW we're using SQL Server 2008 if that's any help. TIA, Paolo
