• Symfony user authentication using Active Directory

  Is there a way to authenticate users in symfony apps using Active Directory? Can you please point out some documentation? edit What i need is to have a transparent login in my application. The user authenticates once at windows logon, then all applications should be accessed with the same credentials without being asked for the domain\username and password again. • Facebook Canvas Apps, New API

  I'm having some trouble with switching to the new JS API for a number of things with creating applications within FB, specifically the "Tab". <!-- function do_perm() { Facebook.showPermissionDialog('publish_stream,email,offline_access', null); } //--> This no longer works for me when called via an onclick command. Also, with the new API and an FBML app. How does this exactly work? The documentation is really poor so I am confused when looking at the old wiki, and the new developer site. Apologies for being pretty vague, but I'm just generally confused with the lack of clear direction with the new API and help would be greatly appreciated. I'm simply just trying to create a call that prompts for the new style user permission dialog, and oncomplete calls another JS function.

  Hello, I was reading these days about large projects implementation in python and Flex, and very often people praise the use of framework (like Cairngorm, PureMVC or others) over traditional OOP coding. I think i dont really understand the advantage of using FW, which is the strong point over classic programming? how big should be the project in order to use FW? it is intended mainly for web-applications? or can be used for desktop apps as well? hope, all these doubts dont sound stupid to you, i am not Computer engineer, just electronic, so my knowledge of sw architecture is very limited. • MSCC: Global Windows Azure Bootcamp

  Mauritius participated and contributed to the Global Windows Azure Bootcamp 2014 (GWAB). Again! And this time stronger than ever, and together with 137 other locations in 56 countries world-wide. We had 62 named registrations, 7 guest additions and approximately 10 offline participants prior to the event day. Most interestingly the organisation of the GWAB through the MSCC helped to increased the number of craftsmen. The Mauritius Software Craftsmanship Community has currently 138 registered members - in less than one year! Only with those numbers we can proudly say that all the preparations and hard work towards this event already paid off. Personally, I'm really grateful that we had this kind of response and the feedback from some attendees confirmed that the MSCC is on the right track here on Cyber Island Mauritius. Inspired and motivated by the success of this event, rest assured that there will be more public events like the GWAB. This time it took some time to reflect on our meetup, following my first impression right on spot: "Wow, what an experience to organise and participate in this global event. Overall, I've been very pleased with the preparations and the event itself. Surely, there have been some nicks that we have to address and to improve for future activities like this. Quite frankly, we are not professional event organisers (not yet) but we learned a lot over the past couple of days. A big Thank You to our event sponsors, namely Microsoft Indian Ocean Islands & French Pacific, Ceridian Mauritius and Emtel. Without them this event wouldn't have happened - Thank You! We are already looking into that and ideas / action plans on how we will be able to improve it for future events. The sessions We started the day with welcoming speeches by Thierry Coret, Sr. Marketing Manager of Microsoft Indian Ocean Islands & French Pacific and Vidia Mooneegan, Managing Director and Sr. Vice President of Ceridian Mauritius. The clear emphasis was on the endless possibilities of cloud computing and how it can enable any kind of sectors here in the country. Then it was about time to set up the cloud computing services in order to contribute each attendees cloud computing resources to the global research of diabetes, a step by step guide presented by Arnaud Meslier, Technical Evangelist at Microsoft. Given a rendering package and a configuration file it was very interesting to follow the single steps in Windows Azure. Also, during the day we were not sure whether the set up had been correctly, as Mauritius didn't show up on the results board - which should have been the case after approximately 20 to 30 minutes. Anyways, let the minions work... Next, Arnaud gave a brief overview of the variety of services Windows Azure has to offer. Whether you need a development environment for your websites or mobiles app, running a virtual machine with your existing applications or simply putting a SQL database online. No worries, Windows Azure has the right packages available and the online management portal is really easy t handle. After this, we got a little bit more business oriented while Wasiim Hosenbocus, employee at Ceridian, took the attendees through the inerts of a real-life application, and demoed a couple of the existing features. He did a great job by showing how the different services of Windows Azure can be created and pulled together. After the lunch break it is always tough to keep the audience awake... And it was my turn. I gave a brief overview on operating and managing a SQL database on Windows Azure. Well, there are actually two options available and depending on your individual requirements you should be aware of both. The simpler version is called SQL Database and while provisioning only takes a couple of seconds, you should take into consideration that SQL Database has a number of constraints, like limitations on the actual database size - up to 5 GB as web edition and up to 150 GB maximum as business edition -, among others. Next, it was Chervine Bhiwoo's session on Windows Azure Mobile Services. It was absolutely amazing to see that the mobiles services directly offers you various project templates, like Windows 8 Store App, Android app, iOS app, and even Xamarin cross-platform app development. So, within a couple of minutes you can have your first mobile app active and running on Windows Azure. Furthermore, Chervine showed the attendees that adding another user interface, like Web Sites running on ASP.NET MVC 4 only takes a couple of minutes, too. And last but not least, we rounded up the day with Windows Azure Websites and hosting of Virtual Machines presented by some members of the local Microsoft Students Partners programme. Surely, one of the big advantages using Windows Azure is the availability of pre-defined installation packages of known web applications, like WordPress, Joomla!, or Ghost. Compared to running your own web site with a traditional web hoster it is surely en par, and depending on your personal level of expertise, Windows Azure provides you more liberty in terms of configuration than maybe a shared hosting environment. Running a pre-defined web application is one thing but in case that you would like to have more control over your hosting environment it is highly advised to opt for a virtual machine. Provisioning of an Ubuntu 12.04 LTS system was very simple to do but it takes some more minutes than you might expect. So, please be patient and take your time while Windows Azure gets everything in place for you. Afterwards, you can use a SecureShell (ssh) client like Putty in case of a Linux-based machine, or Remote Desktop Services when operating a Windows Server system to log in into your virtual machine. At the end of the day we had a great Q&A session and we finalised the event with our raffle of goodies. Participation in the raffle was bound to submission of the session survey and most gratefully we had a give-away for everyone. What a nice coincidence to finish of the day. A: Yes, you can. Have a look at the right side column on the dashboard of your website. There you'll find information about the FTP and SFTP host names. You can use any FTP client, like ie. FileZilla to log in. FTP also gives you access to your log files. Q: What are the size limitations on SQL Database? A: 5 GB on the Web Edition, and 150 GB on the business edition. A maximum 150 databases (inclusing 'master') per SQL Database server. A: The maximum Windows Azure VM has currently 8 CPU cores, 14 or 56 GB of RAM and 16x 1 TB hard drives. As for the MSCC it would be a great experience to stay in touch with them, and to work on upcoming, common activities. Furthermore, I had a very good conversation with Thierry and Ludovic of Microsoft IOI & FP on the necessity of user groups and IT communities here on the island. It's great to see that the MSCC is currently on a run and that local companies are sharing our thoughts on promoting IT careers and exchange of IT knowledge in such an open way. I'm also looking forward to be able to participate and to contribute on more events in the near future. My resume of the day We learned a lot today and there is always room for improvement! It was an awesome event and quite frankly it was a pleasure to spend the day with so many enthuastic IT people in the same room. It was a great experience to organise such event locally and participate on a global scale to support the GlyQ-IQ Technology in their research on diabetes. I was so pleased to see the involvement of new MSCC members in taking the opportunity to share and learn about the power of cloud computing. • Invalid padding on ASP 2.0 cookie, MVC looks ok

  We have a cookie management library that writes a cookie containing some sensitive information, encrypted with Rijndael. The cookie encrypts and decrypts fine in unit tests (using Moq), works fine for MVC web applications, but when called from an ASP.net 2.0 website, the cookie cannot be decrypted. "Padding is invalid and cannot be removed." We are sure that the cookie value is valid because we tested it 10,000 times with random data in a unit test. There is something about what ASP.NET 2.0 does when it reads and writes the cookie that causes trouble. There has to be a gotcha. Any suggestions?

  Hi, I'm moving from Windows CE 6 to Windows Embedded Standard 7 for a project and am wondering how remote debugging of .Net apps works with Windows Embedded target devices. In CE with VS2008 and ActiveSync (USB), I can hit F5 and my app is automatically deployed to the target device and executed so I can step through my breakpoints just like I would if I were debugging locally. Is there an equivalent remote debugging solution for Windows Embedded debugging? A quick glance through the Visual Studio "Remote Debugger" documentation makes the whole thing seem a lot clunkier/less integrated. Is there an easy way to debug applications on target devices running Windows Embedded like I would with CE? Thanks, Ben

• Keyboard Simulation not working with Keyboard hook for modifier keys

  I have a piece of software that is being used to simulate a certain device on a touchscreen, this device already runs an application that receives keyboard input from the device. My software (reffered to as simulator) displays a virtual keyboard and runs the application. Thus, the simulator sends keys with input simulator: http://inputsimulator.codeplex.com/ And the applciation listens to keys with the following keyboard hook: https://svn.cyberduck.io/tags/release-4-1/source/ch/cyberduck/core/GlobalKeyboardHook.cs My problem is, what some keys from the device's hardware actually do is to sent a key combination (ex: left-alt + 1) to the application and a weird scenario is occurring: The application listens to normal keyboard inputs The simulator sends keys to other applications (ie: visual studio responds to the keys sent when debugging) The simulator can send single keys to the application (I can type) The simulator CANNOT send key combinations to the application (alt+1 is received as just 1 in the application) This started happenning when we imported the application's dll into the same process from the simulator. Could there be any reason why I can't simulate key combinations for a hook in the same process? Is there any easy fix for this?

  My open source Android application has internationalization done the Android way, with strings.xml files. The community has many people from many countries, and they are willing to contribute/improve translations using a collaborative website. There is Launchpad but it only supports the gettext format so we would have to use scripts, not very convenient. There is Crowdin but somehow this website seems dead, nearly no projects, and the download links do not work. Actually we started using Crowdin but all download links fail to give any strings.xml file back, see here. What website is convenient for translating open source Android applications?

• Interactive Data Language, IDL: Does anybody care?

  Anyone use a language called Interactive Data Language, IDL? It is popular with scientists. I think it is a poor language because it is proprietary (every terminal running it has to have an expensive license purchased) and it has minimal support (try searching for IDL, the language, right now on stack) . I am trying to convince my colleagues to stop using it and learn C/C++/Python/Fortran/Java/Ruby. Does anybody know about or even care about IDL enough to have opinions on it? What do you think of it? Should I tell my colleagues to stop wasting their time on it now? How can I convince them? Edit: People are getting the impression that I don't know or use IDL. Also, I said IDL has minimal support which is true in one sense, so I must clarify that the scientific libraries are indeed large. I use IDL all the time, but this is exactly the problem: I am only using IDL because colleagues use it. There is a file format IDL uses, the .sav, which can only be opened in IDL. So I must use IDL to work with this data and transfer the data back to colleagues, but I know I would be more efficient in another language. This is like someone sending you a microsoft word file in an email attachment and if you don't understand how wrong that is then you probably write too many words not enough code and you bought microsoft word.   we're considering migrating our UI to XBAP. we've chosen XBAP despite knowing the clients must have .net pre-installed, since we're not targeting the masses but rather IT professionals in the corporate environment, and it's a way to preserve our investment (in a WPF based UI in a client-server architecture) and enjoy web deployment. however, we are concerned about the maturity of the platform/architecture and it's adoption. do you know of any commercial applications out there using XBAP, and do you have any experience using it? can you elaborate on that experience? also, as @Murph suggested, can you think of strong reasons to prefer clickOnce over XBAP (or the other way around)?

  Hi, Dabbling with creating an installer with inno setup- but wondering: What are the pros and cons of using registry keys (windows program) vs. .ini files that sit within the program folder? If I store all my user settings in .ini files, the entire program can be removed by deleting the folder. With registry keys i'd have to create an uninstaller / remove the key manually. Why is it that most commercial applications use registry values? I know from brief use of Macs that most programs are drag and drop. Are one of the major reasons because of the lack of a registry key in mac OS?

In general we use biometrics in computer applications say for authentication. Lets get 2 examples finger prints and facial recognition. In those cases how we keep the information for comparison. As an example we can't keep a image and process it every time. So what are the methodologies we use to store/determine the similarity in such cases? Are there any special algorithms that designed for that purposes.? (Ex : To return a approximately equal value for a finger print of a certain person every time)

  I'm building a web application using WCF that will be consumed by other applications as a service. Our app will be installed on a farm of web services and load balanced for scalability purposes. Occasionally we run into problems specific to one web server and we'd like to be able to determine from the response which web server the request was processed by and possibly timing information as well. For example, this request was processed by WebServer01 and the request took 200ms to finish. The first solution that came to mind was to build an ISAPI filter to add an HTTP header that stores this information in the response. This strikes me as the kind of thing somebody must have done before. Is there a better way to do this or an off-the-shelf ISAPI filter that I can use for this? Thanks in advance

  I'm interested in getting into developing trading systems, black box, HFT, etc. My primary experience is with C# and .Net (7 years). I've also done some sockets programming. I have some experience in finance working on analysis applications (2 years). My goal is to move into developing automated trading systems for a hedge fund, bank, etc. Is there any way to learn the skills needed for this without somehow getting the job first? I've looked at the open source tradelink, IB interactive brokerage, etc. I'm playing around with this framework, and may hook it up and do some paper trading. However, I'm not sure if this has much relationship with how a well-funded entity would be conducting a high-level automated trading operation. I.e. would the tools and frameworks they prefer be a totally different skill-set? Also wondering if I need to learn C++ and/or Java for these types of apps.

  Hi, I tried to run the directx samples from ..\Windows Mobile 6 SDK\Samples\PocketPC\CPP\win32\directx\d3dm\tutorials on m Samsung Omnia and on the emulator and it doesn't work because a deployment error. I am using Microsoft Visual Studio 2008 and have installed Windows Mobile SDK Standard and Professional refresh. The device is correctly plugged in and set up for active sync(I know this because other samples work, also a creating Win32 smart device and running it works) When I try to run the application it compiles without errors but the message: " There were deployment errors, Continue? Yes/No" appears If I manually copy the application from the debug folder to the device and run it from there, it works. The same deployment error message appears if I try it on an emulator. Other applications are deploying successfully. Is there any way to make the deployment work? Maybe there is an obscure option I need to set... Thank you

  I have a video in applications documents folder. I need it to be saved in camera roll. So, I used UISaveVideoAtPathToSavedPhotosAlbum method to save it in camera roll. It's working and I can see the video added to camera roll. But, the problem is every time I execute the application with same video(with same file name), it is added another time in camera roll instead of replacing the old one. So, it is creating the duplicates of the video. How can I make the application work like if a video is present in camera roll and again added with same file name, then old one is replaced by new video.

  see also Is “Code Access Security” of any real world use? I want to get some other opinions on this... I like the idea of Code Access Security for desktop applications. But in the lifetime of .NET I have to admit I've never actually had a situation where CAS has actually blocked something to my benefit. I have, however, had many times where something as simple as sharing a quick .NET application across a mapped drive becomes an enterprise code access nightmare. Having to break out caspol.exe to create trusted path rules and having no clear way of knowing why something failed makes it seem like CAS adds way more frustration to the development and deployment process than it offers in security. I'd like to hear either some situations where CAS has actually helped more than hurt, or if there are other people out there frustrated with its current implementation and defaults.
