  I'm looking at building an exhaustive function that returns a friendly name for the Users Operating System. I think I have most of the Windows stuff down, but I'm not sure about Linux, OSX, and others. • What's a good way to have sample data on the iPhone/iPad?

  I have an iPad application that pulls in all of its data from an external web service. I am working on building in a demo mode that will use a cache of demo data stored on the device so it can be demoed and tried out without the web service connection (or an internet connection.) Is there a project or good practices standard to follow to model this type of sample data? I'm expecting JSON arrays/Dictionaries back from my web service, how could I build a function that uses hardcoded data to create the NSMutableData object I'd expect to get back from a JSON web request?

• Can't access UI from a delegate?

  I got this code: GrooveOnDownload *dlg = [[GrooveOnDownload alloc] init]; NSURLDownload *dw = [[NSURLDownload alloc] initWithRequest:request delegate:dlg]; It starts the download in a delegate class with outlets for UI controls.   I Am trying to connect to a method in my controller, with a button. I can connect though this link: @Html.ActionLink("Print", "Print", new { id = Model.SalesContractId}) But i Don't want a link, i want my button on my dialog to do it. • Sending large XML from Silverlight to SVC (WCF)

  Hi! I want to send a big XML string to a WCF SVC service from Silverlight. It looks like anything under about 50k is sent correctly but if I try to send something over that limit, my request reaches the server (BeginRequest is called) but never reaches my SVC. I get the classic "NotFound" exception. Any idea on how to raise that limit? If I can't raise it? What are my other options? Thanks, Alex

• Shared data in an ASP.NET application

  I have a basic ASP.NET application which is used to request data which is stored on disk. This is loaded from files and sent as the response. I want to be able to store the data loaded from these files in memory to reduce the number of reads from disk. All of the requests will be asking for the same data, so it makes sense to have a single cache of in-memory data which is accessible to all requests. What is the best way to create a single accessible object instance which I can use to store and access this cached data? I've looked into HttpApplication, but apparently a new instance of this is created for parallel requests and so it doesn't fit my needs.

More specific: Can I create a view in my App with a UITextField and a Button, so that when the user writes his review in the textfield and click send, the review should be posted to the "Customer Reviews" in the App Store? and the rating should also be done inside the App similarly.

• How to setup custom CSS based on account settings in a Django site?

  So I'm writing a Django based website that allows users select a color scheme through an administration interface. I already have middleware/context processors that links the current request (based on domain) to the account. My question is how to dynamically serve the CSS with the account's custom color scheme. I see two options: Add a CSS block to the base template that overrides the styles w/variables passed in through a context processors. Use a custom URL (e.g. "/static/dynamic/css//styles.css") that gets routed to a view that grabs all the necessary values and creates the css file. I'm content with either option, but was wondering if anyone else out there has dealt with similar problems and could give some insight as to "Best Practices".

  Hey All, I'm new to JSF and am trying to make a content controller. Basically whenever someone makes a request to www.myapp.com/external/** I'd like to forward to a controller that pulls external content into a page template and spits it out to the user. I was able to achive this pretty easily in Spring 3, but I'm a little confused on where to start with JSF. I feel like I'd need to create a custom servlet to handle /external/**? But what would the class of this servlet be? What would it consist of? Any help is appreciated!

• Cascading MVC controllers with CatchAll Routes

  Hi, I have an MVC app which has its routes defined with the final route being a catch all route to a "PageController" for a database driven collection of pages. What I want to achieve is to be able to plugin to the app a second controller to the catch all route which the first controller passes on to if it does not find the url recieved in the database. Effectively I want to queue up controllers with catch all actions: public ActionResult PageCatchall(string url) { var page = repository.Get<Page>(string url); if (page != null) { // Handle the request return View(page) } // Otherwise pass to a new controller ???? } Anyone have any good ideas as to how to solve this? I have tried RedirectToAction but that requires that the next controller has a different route to the action. I have tried ActionInvoker but this failed to work the way I did it.

• Getting all selected checkboxes in an array

  So I have these checkboxes: <input type="checkbox" name="type" value="4" /> <input type="checkbox" name="type" value="3" /> <input type="checkbox" name="type" value="1" /> <input type="checkbox" name="type" value="5" /> And so on. There are about 6 of them and are hand-coded (i.e not fetched from a db) so they are likely to remain the same for a while. My question is how I can get them all in an array (in javascript), so I can use them while making an AJAX $.post request using Jquery. Any thoughts? Edit: I would only want the selected checkboxes to be added to the array

• Icon fonts vs images

  My manager tells me not to use icon fonts on our websites, as it is another http request plus the extra kBs to download. Also because I would have to use content before for the font (I can't change the html), he prefers background images so it works in IE7. Personally I love the little things, so nice and crisp and resizeable! I get it if we only use a couple of icons on a website but if I would use, say 5 icons on a site - what do you guys think? Is it worth using an icon font or is he right thinking that it is not? I am just a sucker for anything new and exciting, and this year it is the retina display.

  I have a simple sinatra application that needs to generate a file (via an external process), send that file to the browser, and finally, delete the file from the filesystem. Something along these lines: class MyApp < Sinatra::Base get '/generate-file' do # calls out to an external process, # and returns the path to the generated file file_path = generate_the_file() # send the file to the browser send_file(file_path) # remove the generated file, so we don't # completely fill up the filesystem. File.delete(file_path) # File.delete is never called. end end It seems, however, that the send_file call completes the request, and any code after it does not get run. Is there some way to ensure that the generated file is cleaned up after it has been successfully sent to the browser? Or will I need to resort to a cron job running a cleanup script on some interval?

  I am trying to create an edit form for my model. I did not use a model form because depending on the model type, there are different forms that the user can use. (For example, one of the forms has a Tinymce widget, while the other doesn't.) Is there any way of setting the initial data of a form (not a ModelForm) using a model? • Anyone know how you can get a Google dev phone to make Android apps?

  Hi there, I am thinking about converting my web apps into Android apps to reach the Android market. I do not have an Android phone. Can someone tell me how I can possibly get a Google developer phone (other than going to Google I/O, etc)? I realize this is somewhat of a ridiculous request but I have read blogs of people being enticed by google and offered a free phone to convert their web apps into Android apps. So I figure there is no harm in asking. Any insight would be helpful.   If i enter a url directly into the address bar of the browser, i get the following results: logger.debug ENV['HTTP_REFERER'] // => logger.debug request.referrer // => / So the first one gives me a blank result which is what I expected but the second gives me the root? Is this correct? It seems from the docs (http://api.rubyonrails.org/classes/ActionController/AbstractRequest.html#M000478) that they should return the same thing. And secondly, why does it return the root, if there was no referrer.
