• sudoer scheme for a web developer that retains future control of a server?

  Background I have a server that I'm looking to set up, and provide access to another web developer. I don't want to put many constraints on him, though I wouldn't mind isolating the site that he'll be developing from others on the server that I will develop. The problem Mainly what I want is to make sure that I retain control over the server in the future. I want to reserve the ability to create/promote/demote and other administrative functions that don't deal with web software. If I make him an admin, he can sudo su - and become root and remove root control from me, for example. What is a good setup for the sudoers file so that he can do things like: *install software (through apt-get) restart apache access mysql configure mysql/apache reboot edit web development configuration type files in /etc * And can't do things like: take away other admin permissions change the root password have control over other security/administrative functions Example sudoer files that accomplish something like that could be useful, I'm sure that people have needed to do this before.

• 4 - 7 second delay accessing Mysql across the network

  Hello, our company has recently purchased a new server with the intention of replacing our aging database server. its a full 64bit 2008 enterprise system, i have got the basic server setup and configured and then installed the 64bit version of mysql on the server, this has then been configured to match where possible our existing server as much as it can. however i have noticed that when it was swapped with the production database server our software systems had an increased delay accessing the mysql database this was anything beween 4 - 7 seconds. i have tried disabling TOE, IPv6 and a few other suggested soultions to this but so far cannot find out where this slowdown is coming from. replacing the server with the production one and the delay goes away. in terms of software and hardware the servers are not very identical at all due to one being windows 2003 std with a 32bit server and the new one being windows 2008 enterprise with a 64bit server. thanks Kris

• Having many subdomains with SSL--best practices?

  I have a site that has many subdomains (one for each client). The content for each subdomain will be different, pulling different data, different layouts etc, so I don't think I can just alias one directory to many different sub domains. My question is, what's the best practice for doing this? Each subdomain will need SSL. My setup is Amazon EC2 (ubuntu) Wildcard SSL for my domain (*.mydomain.com) Apache 2 PHP (LAMP) Currently, I'm just creating a new entry into "/etc/hosts" and an appropriate spot in the web root (ie /var/www/abc.mydomain.com, /var/www/def.mydomain.com, etc). I've just discovered that I'll need a unique IP for each subdomain, and that's tricky with EC2 as they limit you to the number you can have (unless you jump through some hoops). Right now I have about 10 subdomains, which is manageable, but theoretically I could have thousands. Am I doing it the only way possible or is there a better way I should investigate?

  I am looking into building a syslog / logging infrastructure and am pondering about some architecture best practices. Essentially, I see that a syslog system needs to support two conflicting workloads: log collection. Potentially massive streams of data need to be written quickly to disks and indexed. log querying. logs will be queried by both fixed fields such as date and source as well as text search. What is the best disk/system setup assuming I'd like to keep it to a single server for now? Should I use SSDs or ramdisk to off-load some processing? some disks in stripe and some in raid5? I am particularly eyeing Graylog2 with ElasticSearch/MongoDB

• Connection to mysql server in SYN_SENT

  We are facing a strange problem from last few days between our application server and database server(Mysql): connection to database server from application server hangs in SYN_SENT state and after that we are not able to make any connection to database server on mysql port(3306). When we checked the netstat output on database server its in SYN_RECV state. What I can figure out is mysql server is receiving the SYN request and responding also and its not reaching to the client hence SYN_RECV at server side and SYN_SENT at client side. I think SYN_SENT state should go after some time and because of this other db connection attempts to same server should not hang. Does anybody have any idea how can we resolve this issue? • capistrano still asks for the 1st password even though I've set up an ssh key???

  Hi, Background: I've setup an ssh key to avoid having to use passwords with capistrano per http://www.picky-ricky.com/2009/01/ssh-keys-with-capistrano.html. A basic ssh to my server does work fine without asking for passwords. I'm using "dreamhost.com" for hosting. Issue - When I run 'cap deploy' I still get asked for the 1st password (even through the previous 2nd and 3rd password requests are now automated). It is the capistrano command that start with "git clone - q ssh:....." for which the password is being requested. Question - Is there something I've missed? How can I get "cap deploy" totally passwordless? Some excerts from config/deploy.rb are: set :use_sudo, false ssh_options[:keys] = [File.join(ENV["HOME"], ".ssh", "id_rsa")] default_run_options[:pty] = true thanks PS. • Linux with Windows XP vmware guest unable to access certain Internet hosts

  hi I have annoying problem. My setup is the following: debian Linux, 64 bits, VMWare workstation 7 host, with Windows XP running as guest. From Firefox, or Internet Explorer, I am unable to access few sites, for example nvidia.com, osdir. Basically get connection timed out, on the other hand ping works to those sites. Moreover, Slashdot loads very very slow and sometimes gets horrible text-only version. everything works fine on Linux host I suspect it has something to do with routing on Linux, I recall having similar problem long time ago, which was fixed by setting something in /proc. I tried setting MTU and TCP window size on Windows lower, but did not help Any idea what is going on?

• Cloud based backup solutions based on open standards?

  I am looking for a solution to backup and consolidate important media from a couple Windows laptops and Mac laptop. I would like a solutions that based on open standards, so my data isn't trapped by proprietary formats and proprietary protocols. I would like the ability to switch clients or change providers in the future. For example, something like Jungle Disk plus S3 sounds like a great option. However, I am having trouble confirming how or if this can be setup meeting this criteria. Are there any real or de-facto standards for treating S3 as a filesystem? If so, what Windows and Mac clients support these standards?

• pnp4nagios does not generate perfdata

  I am running nagios2, pnp4nagios-0.6.16 and php 5.2.4-2ubuntu5.19. In my setup, pnp4nagios is correctly generating perfdata, which can be seen via the web interface in graphical form for lots of services. The perfdata directory contains entries of the kind: /usr/local/pnp4nagios/var/perfdata/zeus/Disk_Space_Home.rrd /usr/local/pnp4nagios/var/perfdata/zeus/Disk_Space_Home.xml I have activated performance data for a new nagios service: define serviceextinfo { host_name zeus service_description 450average action_url /pnp4nagios/index.php?host=$HOSTNAME$&srv=$SERVICEDESC$ } This service is generating monitoring data in the format: status_info|perf_data as required for performance gathering. But somehow the performance data related to this service is not being collected by pnp4nagios (no related entries in /usr/local/pnp4nagios/var/perfdata) Are there any pnp4nagios scripts or settings which I could use to debug this?

• Postfix - Unable to receive emails from certain domains

  Got a Postfix-Dovecot-Saslauthd setup on Ubuntu 10.04. Problem is there's (at least) one domain that it refuses to accept emails from. I've been getting emails fine from lots of different domains except one. It's really weird, but could some config file or something be blocking certain domains? or IPs? or something? I know the emails are being sent to me, infact I sent a test one myself from this domain and they're just not showing up.

  The RAC team did it again (thanks Saar!) - another awesome set of Oracle VM templates published and uploaded to My Oracle Support. You can find the main page here. What's special about the latest version of DeployCluster is that it integrates tightly with Oracle VM 3 manager. It basically is an Oracle VM frontend that helps start VMs, pass arguments down automatically and there is absolutely no need to log into the Oracle VM servers or the guests. Once it completes, you have an entire Oracle RAC database setup ready to go. Here's a short summary of the steps : Set up an Oracle VM 3 server pool Download the Oracle VM RAC template from oracle.com Import the template into Oracle VM using Oracle VM Manager repository - import Create a public and private network in Oracle VM Manager in the network tab Configure the template with the right public and private virtual networks Create a set of shared disks (physical or virtual) to assign to the VMs you want to create (for ASM/at least 5) Clone a set of VMs from the template (as many RAC nodes as you plan to configure) With Oracle VM 3.1 you can clone with a number so one clone command for, say 8 VMs is easy. Assign the shared devices/disks to the cloned VMs Create a netconfig.ini file on your manager node or a client where you plan to run DeployCluster This little text file just contains the IP addresses, hostnames etc for your cluster. • Fedora vs Ubuntu vs Debian to host Subversion and Bugzilla over Apache

  I'm not interested in a flame war of Ubuntu vs Fedora vs Debian vs whatever. What I am interested in is whether or not I should move my current Ubuntu server to Fedora or Debian. I have been able to get Subversion setup and hosted via Apache over https and it works quite well (I'm a .NET guy so this was all new to me). I'm having trouble though with installing Bugszilla - have run into some issues getting all the perl scripts to run successfully so my questions are: 1) Will Bugszilla will install easier on Fedora or Debian? Can I just install a package instead of having to download the tar.gz file and untar it, run perl scripts, etc. 2) Is Fedora or Debian considered to be a better production server system? I have no desire for a GUI, just need it to host Subversion, Bugzilla over Apache2, and act as a file and print server for my home network.

• Will Software RAID And iSCSI Work For A SAN

  I am looking for a SAN solution, but can't afford even entry level solutions. Basically, the SAN is for development and a proof of concept product. The performance doesn't have to be amazing, but needs to be functional. My buddy says we should just setup sotware RAID and software iSCSI in Linux. Essentially I have a spare server with dual Xeon processors, 4GB of memory, and (2) 500GB 7200RPM drives. It's a bit old but working. I am sure there is reason people don't do software RAID and iSCSI, but will performance be usable? Thinking of configuring the drives in RAID 0 (for performance).

• How do I install kivy?

  I was trying to install Kivy (by following the instructions here). I downloaded and installed all packages where the installation process went through without giving me any errors. However, when later I enter below command; sudo easy_install kivy It looked like it was going to work but it ends with an error by displaying following lines, which I don't comprehend: Detected compiler is unix /tmp/easy_install-BtOA_u/Kivy-1.8.0/kivy/graphics/texture.c:8:22: fatal error: pyconfig.h: No such file or directory #include "pyconfig.h" ^ compilation terminated. error: Setup script exited with error: command 'x86_64-linux-gnu-gcc' failed with exit status 1 I saw a similar question asked as; Problem with kivy installation. However, this didn't work for me though the question suggests installing libgles-mesa-dev-lts-raring which I did as below; sudo apt-get install libgles-mesa-dev-lts-raring which then gave below; E: Unable to locate package libgles-mesa-dev-lts-raring (sorry for being so specific and perhaps obvious, but I'm in the early stage of learning my way around linux). This user was running Ubuntu 12.04, and most other questions related to this I've seen came from people with a different release from mine, which has led me to believe that that is the reason why the suggestions to those didn't solve my problem. • Sudden restart when Ubuntu almost loaded from disc.

  Hi all, Here are the specs beforehand: ECS K7SEM motherboard AMD Duron 900MHz 2x 256MB PC133 SDRAM The Best Power MT-500P 500W PSU Integrated graphics No hard drive DVD-ROM - will update with brand & model Now, I was starting up this machine after it was left outside for 3 months in winter weather. (I got this from a friend.) I was able to get it started and tried to load Ubuntu from the DVD-ROM. It was fairly successful and got up to the point when the Ubuntu logo is glowing. However, when Ubuntu was about to go to the main screen, the computer crashed and automatically rebooted. Is there any reason why this is happening? Also, I should mention that when I try to hit Delete on the BIOS screen to go to Setup, it only shows a screen with four lines saying something Novell something... I will edit with exact lines. Should I be resetting the BIOS or something? Thanks in advance.

  I have a Linksys WRT54GL router that I don't need anymore, since I had to buy a 3G capable router (Dovado 3GN). As I only have a 3G connection at home, I want to optimize it as much as possible. I want to setup a caching DNS server, including some blacklisting of ad domains. The router currently runs the DD-WRT firmware. Is it possible to use this router as an ordinary computer, running only a DNS server, disabling all other features such as DHCP, WLAN, etc? Connecting it to my other router, should I simply run a cable into the WAN-port of the Linksys router?

• SBS 2011 on different subnet than domain computers

  The setup is as follows: SBS 2011 in datacentre on subnet A Domain PCs at another location on subnet B There is a site-to-site VPN. The domain PCs have joined the domain and have the SBS as their primary DNS server. The domain PCs can ping the DC but the problem is that the DC cannot ping any of the remote subnet (subnet B) SBS --Switch -- Router A ------------------- Router B -- Switch -- Domain PCs What is strange is that router A can ping any host on the subnet B. Another host on Subnet A can also ping any host on subnet B. It's only the DC which cannot ping anything to that specific remote subnet B. I did a tracert from the SBS to router B. The packet reaches Router A from the SBS but then it fails. Am I missing some specific settings that needs to be done when SBS is on a different subnet than its member pcs ?

  we are using in our lab a clean installation of Windows Server 2008 R2 which is running as Hyper-V instance. Today we wanted to install a clean installation of Sharepoint 2007 with SP1 on this machine and we explorer an error that we are not able to install it. • Orthographic unit translation mismatch on grid (e.g. 64 pixels translates incorrectly)

  I am looking for some insight into a small problem with unit translations on a grid. Setup 512x448 window 64x64 grid gl_Position = projection * world * position; projection is defined by ortho(-w/2.0f, w/2.0f, -h/2.0f, h/2.0f); This is a textbook orthogonal projection function. world is defined by a fixed camera position at (0, 0) position is defined by the sprite's position. Problem In the screenshot below (1:1 scaling) the grid spacing is 64x64 and I am drawing the unit at (64, 64), however the unit draws roughly ~10px in the wrong position. I've tried uniform window dimensions to prevent any distortion on the pixel size, but now I am a bit lost in the proper way in providing a 1:1 pixel-to-world-unit projection. Anyhow, here are some quick images to aide in the problem. I decided to super-impose a bunch of the sprites at what the engine believes is 64x offsets. When this seemed off place, I went about and did the base case of 1 unit. Which seemed to line up as expected. The yellow shows a 1px difference in the movement. Vertices It would appear that the vertices going into the vertex shader are correct. For example, in reference to the first image the data looks like this in the VBO: x y x y ---------------------------- tl | 0.0 24.0 64.0 24.0 bl | 0.0 0.0 -> 64.0 0.0 tr | 16.0 0.0 80.0 0.0 br | 16.0 24.0 80.0 24.0 With that said, all I am left to believe is that I am munging up my actual projection. So, I am looking for any insight into maintaining the 1:1 pixel-to-world-unit projection.

• Using unordered_multimap as entity and component storage

  The Setup I've made a few games (more like animations) using the Object Oriented method with base classes for objects that extend them, and objects that extend those, and found I couldn't wrap my head around expanding that system to larger game ideas. So I did some research and discovered the Entity-Component system of designing games. I really like the idea, and thoroughly understood the usefulness of it after reading Byte54's perfect answer here: Role of systems in entity systems architecture. With that said, I have decided to create my current game idea using the described Entity-Component system. Having basic knowledge of C++, and SFML, I would like to implement the backbone of this entity component system using an unordered_multimap without classes for the entities themselves. Here's the idea: An unordered_mulitmap stores entity IDs as the lookup term, while the value is an inherited Component object. Examlpe: ____________________________ |ID |Component | ---------------------------- |0 |Movable | |0 |Accelable | |0 |Renderable | |1 |Movable | |1 |Renderable | |2 |Renderable | ---------------------------- So, according to this map of objects, the entity with ID 0 has three components: Movable, Accelable, and Renderable. These component objects store the entity specific data, such as the location, the acceleration, and render flags. The entity is simply and ID, with the components attached to that ID describing its attributes. Problem I want to store the component objects within the map, allowing the map have full ownership of the components. The problem I'm having, is I don't quite understand enough about pointers, shared pointers, and references in order to get that set up. How can I go about initializing these components, with their various member variables, within the unordered_multimap? Can the base component class take on the member variables of its child classes, when defining the map as unordered_multimap<int, component>? Requirements I need a system to be able to grab an entity, with all of its' attached components, and access members from the components in order to do the necessary calculations and reassignments for position, velocity, etc. Need a clarification? • MAAS/JuJu Clarifications

  I really love the concept of MAAS underlying an OpenStack implementation, but there are a few questions about MAAS that I am not entirely clear on. Should all hosts be set to network boot at all times or after they have been registered and allocated as a service, should they boot to disk? After juju bootstrap is executed, I turn on the machine that has been allocated (note WoL isn't working, I suspect it's being blocked on the network), the machine boot's up and then juju status executes correct, agent running and all that good stuff. If I 'reboot' the machine (testing power failure/problem whatever), juju status comes back but the agent-state is no longer in running state, and so far I have to destroy the environment and restart. In all cases I have never been able to deploy any services to any of the other nodes. I deploy the service with juju, note which node it was assigned, and then start the system. The system just boots up into a basic node. If I SSH to it I have to enter password, so it's not setting up the ssh key or anything. This is on Ubuntu 12.04.1 LTS systems and HP GL360G7 hosts. The MAAS management server is running as a VM but all on the same network. At this point I am not sure if I am doing something wrong or if there is a problem somewhere else. Is the idea that anytime a host is rebooted it should be rebuilt from the ground up, or is something else going on behind the scene to tell it to boot the local image. If the latter, why doesn't the agent start on a system that has been successfully setup before (juju bootstrapped system)?

• Installing router - failed to verify router settings

  I'm trying to install a TP-Link wireless router. I am using a modem an have a PPPoE connection. I connected the router to the computer and the modem, but in the last step of the Easy Setup it says " Failed to verify router settings. 1. Please check the WAN connection type and parameters. 2. Please check your connectivity and retry." The internet works fine if i connect the modem directly to the computer. When I connect the computer to the router, the wireless network is detected by other devices, but cannot be accessed. I accessed the router settings, and everything seems normal, except that it just says "Connecting...". It never manages to connect to the internet. I tried restarting the router and several walkthroughs on the web, but I couldn't get it to work.
