  Can you make sense of the following bit of java code and do you have any suggestions for improving it? Instead of writing four almost identical setOnClickListener method calls I opted to iterate over an array but I'm wondering if this was the best way to do it. • IE 10 Win UI Version Won&rsquo;t Support Flash*

  Rabid Gremlin has a blog post up entitled: Did Microsoft just kill Flash? IE 10 won’t run Flash unless your site is on a Microsoft whitelist! Apparently this is true…kind of. There are 2 versions of IE 10 that ship with WIndows 8. One is the Windows UI version (in this article, I’m going to reference this as IE10Metro) and one is the desktop version. These are entirely different apps, different codebases. IE10Metro will *not* serve up Flash content unless the website hosting the content has been whitelisted with Microsoft, as per this Microsoft document. IE10 for the desktop will serve Flash content without any issues. In a broader view, what this means is that web developers now need to consider another browser for testing their sites in – IE 10 Metro, in addition to IE 10 Desktop. D

• GTK equivalent to MS Spy++

  Spy++ comes with paid version of MS Visual Studio as utility that gives you a graphical view of the system’s processes, threads, windows, and window messages. and it's not only utility on Win32 that offers this feature, but I use it as popular example. It lists all UI elements of all running applications, and user can use "Find Tool" to locate UI element of interest and get response dialog with versatile information about that object, like UI control name, text contents, and many other data of potential interest to a programmer. I'm interested in similar GTK application which can at least return GTK UI element (widget) name and extracted text contents of that element of arbitrary running process. I couldn't find anything related using Google

• Popup Details for a Table Record

  This one started as an OTN how-to question that seemed like something that should work automatically - turns out you need a couple of small tweaks to get it working. The idea is to have a table on a page showing multiple records, you can click any row in the table - and get a pop-up window that shows more data about that row. At first I thought I'll just need to drag the same view twice to the page - once as a table and then as a form in a pop-up. But then the Form didn't reflect the new row that got selected in the table - you'll always see the first row you selected. Adding a Partial Page Rendering between the table and the pop-up didn't do the trick either. Then I realized that the content delivery attribute of the pop-up was set to lazy, when I switched it to immediate - everything worked. Here is a little demo showing the whole development process: Note that the content delivery method attribute is also something you might want to check if you see your tables being refreshed too often when you scroll through records for example.

• Recommended motherboard with hardware raid for Linux

  Hi. We want to setup an internal office server for testing jobs (LAMP), email and samba. Only about 5-10 users. We are also considering starting to virtualize, initially by a base Ubuntu Server with Xen or VMWare Open Source server. Our current system runs with a Linux Raid which has worked great but it's always been complicated to recover the boot sector when one the drives fail and therefore I would prefer using now a hardware raid instead, but ideally with some kind of software monitoring. For this reason and considering we don't want to spend a fortune a I would appreciate any comments on the following options. Motherboard with RAID with linux support... which could you recommend. Motherboard + Hardware Raid card... Adaptec does not seem to have great Linux suppport. 3Ware seems to have a tc soft controller which we've used on a hosting company, but hard to find here in Spain. HP Proliant type basic server, which? Dell Small Servers... any good for Linux? Thanks in advance for any feedback.

• World Record Oracle Business Intelligence Benchmark on SPARC T4-4

  Oracle's SPARC T4-4 server configured with four SPARC T4 3.0 GHz processors delivered the first and best performance of 25,000 concurrent users on Oracle Business Intelligence Enterprise Edition (BI EE) 11g benchmark using Oracle Database 11g Release 2 running on Oracle Solaris 10. A SPARC T4-4 server running Oracle Business Intelligence Enterprise Edition 11g achieved 25,000 concurrent users with an average response time of 0.36 seconds with Oracle BI server cache set to ON. The benchmark data clearly shows that the underlying hardware, SPARC T4 server, and the Oracle BI EE 11g (11.1.1.6.0 64-bit) platform scales within a single system supporting 25,000 concurrent users while executing 415 transactions/sec. The benchmark demonstrated the scalability of Oracle Business Intelligence Enterprise Edition 11g 11.1.1.6.0, which was deployed in a vertical scale-out fashion on a single SPARC T4-4 server. Oracle Internet Directory configured on SPARC T4 server provided authentication for the 25,000 Oracle BI EE users with sub-second response time. A SPARC T4-4 with internal Solid State Drive (SSD) using the ZFS file system showed significant I/O performance improvement over traditional disk for the Web Catalog activity. In addition, ZFS helped get past the UFS limitation of 32767 sub-directories in a Web Catalog directory. The multi-threaded 64-bit Oracle Business Intelligence Enterprise Edition 11g and SPARC T4-4 server proved to be a successful combination by providing sub-second response times for the end user transactions, consuming only half of the available CPU resources at 25,000 concurrent users, leaving plenty of head room for increased load. The Oracle Business Intelligence on SPARC T4-4 server benchmark results demonstrate that comprehensive BI functionality built on a unified infrastructure with a unified business model yields best-in-class scalability, reliability and performance. Oracle BI EE 11g is a newer version of Business Intelligence Suite with richer and superior functionality. Results produced with Oracle BI EE 11g benchmark are not comparable to results with Oracle BI EE 10g benchmark. The benchmark test is executed against a full production version of the Oracle Business Intelligence 11g Applications with a fully populated underlying database schema.   After running with a somewhat disconnected set of tools (vs 2008, Ontime, sharepoint 2007) for managing our projects we decided to make the move to Team Foundation Server 2010.  With limited coverage of the product available online i went in search of a book and found this… View this book on the Wrox website I must point out that i have only read 10 of the 26 chapters so far, mainly the ones that cover source code control, work item tracking and database projects.  This enables our dev team to get familiar with it before switching project management over at a future date. Needless to say i am very impressed with the detail it provides, answering pretty much every question i had about TFS so far.  I'm looking forward to digging into the sections on testing, code analysis and architecture. Highly recommended.

Let me know which one of the following is your favorite article from memory lane. 2006 SQL SERVER – Cursor to Kill All Process in Database I indeed wrote this cursor and when I often look back, I wonder how naive I was to write this. The reason for writing this cursor was to free up my database from any existing connection so I can do database operation. This worked fine but there can be a potentially big issue if there was any important transaction was killed by this process. There is another way to to achieve the same thing where we can use ALTER syntax to take database in single user mode. Read more about that over here and here. 2007 Rules of Third Normal Form and Normalization Advantage – 3NF The rules of 3NF are mentioned here Make a separate table for each set of related attributes, and give each table a primary key. If an attribute depends on only part of a multi-valued key, remove it to a separate table If attributes do not contribute to a description of the key, remove them to a separate table. Correct Syntax for Stored Procedure SP Sometime a simple question is the most important question. I often see in industry incorrectly written Stored Procedure. Few writes code after the most outer BEGIN…END and few writes code after the GO Statement. In this brief blog post, I have attempted to explain the same. 2008 Switch Between Result Pan and Query Pan – SQL Shortcut Many times when I am writing query I have to scroll the result displayed in the result set. When all the rows and columns are selected Primary Key should be used to select data as it provides optimal performance. 2009 Interesting Observation – TOP 100 PERCENT and ORDER BY If you pull up any application or system where there are more than 100 SQL Server Views are created – I am very confident that at one or two places you will notice the scenario wherein View the ORDER BY clause is used with TOP 100 PERCENT. SQL Server 2008 VIEW with ORDER BY clause does not throw an error; moreover, it does not acknowledge the presence of it as well.   Apress books Visual C# 2010 (ISBN 978-1-4302-3171-4) - http://www.apress.com/book/view/1430231718 is both an excellent introduction to C# programming and a manual for those with experiance. So far I have only been through a few chapters but I have been favourably impressed. In the chapter on Exceptions, I have posted an errata regarding the custom exception in  listing 14-17; it is missing an overload required by FXCOP     private CustomException(SerializationInfo info, StreamingContext context) : base(info, context)     {     } Aside of this minor point, I have no hesitation to recommending this book to anyone who wishes to learn C#.

• Firebird 2.5 Database Corrupt

  We have an issue where a database hangs the server when: a backup is performed (Hangs on a specific table) selecting * or count(1) from a specific table or viewing data that is related to the table (FKs, etc) We could browse the table to a certain point (using IBExpert) however after about 2900 records the machine just spikes and hangs. Performing a gfix -m does not work, and the validation reports back Record level errors = 4 (no matter how many times we run gfix -m, -v, etc. The Firebird.log file reports back these types of messages: Relation has 91631 orphan backversions (9214273 in use) in table BINS (137) - {Which is apparently just a warning} Unable to complete network request to host "MHPLZA1". Error reading data from the connection. INET/inet_error: read errno = 10054 SERVER/process_packet: broken port, server exiting Shutting down the server with 1 active connection(s) to 1 database(s), 0 active service(s) - {If we leave the backup to run while hanging, it eventually logs this error message} The setup is: The table is question has about 7000 records. The Firebird version is 2.5 Classic Server x64 install. The OS is Windows Server 2008. This is a virtual machine (VMWare) running on a massive server. (Does anyone have issues with VMs and Firebird?). We have the same setup running fine on other servers (However they are not virtual machines). Is there anyway to pin point the issue and or the cause?

  Events and their underlying mechanism "Delegates" are very powerful tools of a developer and Event Driven Programming is one of the main Programming Paradigms. Its wiki definition is "event-driven programming or event-based programming is a programming paradigm in which the flow of the program is determined by events?i.e., sensor outputs or user actions (mouse clicks, key presses) or messages from other programs or threads." That means, your program can go its own way sequentially and in the case of anything that requires attention is done (when an event fires) by somebody or something, you can response it by using that event's controller method (this mechanism is like interrupt driven programming in embedded systems). There are many real world scenarios for events, for example, ASP.NET uses events to catch a click on a button or in your app, controller has notice of a change in UI by handling events exposed by view (in MVC pattern). • Oracle Enterprise Pack for Eclipse (OEPE) 11gR1 (11.1.1.7) now supports ADF Faces Tags

  So the recent release of OEPE 11.1.1.7 has the ADF community buzzing.   In addition to reading the product manager's blog entry on the new release... http://blogs.oracle.com/gstachni/2011/02/oracle_enterprise_pack_for_ecl_3.html ...it's important to realize what this support entails now and in the future.    This first step, of supporting ADF Faces tags, is not prelude to *complete* ADF support in OEPE.  Rather, the aim of the Eclipse support is to provide tools for the MVC (Model-View-Controller) parts of the ADF runtime stack.   This means that we plan to support ADFm and ADFc as well in the future, but not the entire ADF stack (ADF BC, etc).    Hope this gives people an idea of what to expect, and we look forward to your feedback in the forums! • How does it hurt to use Linux (Ubuntu) as a guest OS for all my tasks?

  I have a machine running Windows, where the disk has two partitions C (50 GB) and D (250GB). I do research in Information Retrieval and need to work with a large corpus (more than 50 GB) and in Linux. So if I want to install Linux on the existing system, keeping the Windows installation intact, will it be fine to run it in a virtual box? (say, QEMU, VMWare, etc.) An alternative is using Wubi. In that case the Linux installation has to be on drive C. Then, if I keep a small Linux installation (say 5GB) on C, and my corpus on D (mounted in Linux), how will it affect the performance of my programs which would be accessing the mounted Windows drive D. Is it feasible to use Linux this way? Which of the above is better if at all they are a way out? Note : Since my post in July 2010, I have been using and have tried several ways of maintaining a disk-image that I can mount in Linux. I had a 100GB qcow2 disk and a 100GB raw disk, both formatted to an EXT3 file system. I was mounting and connecting to the qcow2 disk using qemu-nbd. The problem was that every now and then, the connection to the disk would get lost and the running programs would throw disk I/O errors. The raw disk would mount and work fine as a loop mounted device, but when writing data to it, the mount.ntfs program would hog the CPU and the process would take an enormous amount of time. I was in fact running make on a piece of software located on this raw disk, and after a point of time make was waiting while mount.ntfs would show 100% CPU usage.

• Virtual Machines Renaming/Backing up/Sharing

  I've started using VMware virtual machines for all of my software development projects and have a few questions for others doing the same thing. First, how can you rename the virtual machine and the name of the virtual hard drive? I have a base development machine that I clone for different projects. I'd like to name the machine and it's hard drive according the the project (right now when I copy them via cut and paste, the file names remain the same and I can only organize them by putting them in a specific directory). Second, what is the best way to back up a virtual machine? Is it possible (by breaking the virtual hard drive up into chunks instead of one big file) to get incremental backups working? It seems time machine always tries to make a copy of the whole thing which is time consuming because each virtual machine is around 30GB. Finally, how slow would it be to have a virtual machine shared on an NFS mount on a wireless N network and used from multiple computers (but with only one person using it at a time.) Would it be more reasonable on a gigabit lan connection? Thanks for your input! And please feel free to share any advice or wisdom about using virtual machines for software development and the best ways to speed them up!

  MySQL Connector/Net 6.4.6, a new version of the all-managed .NET driver for MySQL has been released.  This is a maintenance release and is recommended for use in production environments. I'm not trying to become a hacker, I just want to ensure I have enough knowledge about web security to cope with today internet. From my inexpert point of view, "Certified Secure Software Lifecycle Professional" looks exactly as I want, the problem is that it cost more than 500 bucks! Why certification? well, I want to learn but I would like also have a way to demonstrate to a future employer/customer that I had to study and pass exams, not only attend to a course. Regards.

Nowadays, I am trying myself in Asp.net MVC3 and been exposed to the HTML with Razor view Engine. To be honest, I am not too good or I should awful at my knowledge of HTML and CSS. Therefore, I keep posting questions now and then on SO for very simple tasks. This has made me very tired of the this Q&A development process. So, now i am thinking of learning the basics of HTML, CSS and maybe some Javascript. Therefore i would request you to guide me to become an efficient enough developer for these technologies. • MVC : Does Code to save data in cache or session belongs in controller?

• How to test a 3D rendering engine?

  Me and some friends developing simple 3D rendering engine as practice for the university. We used Ogre 3d as prototype and now we are developing it from base The engine is wrapped up in simple game that asks the user to select shape (circle, triangle, square...), color and dimensions and renders the image to the screen. It also enables to move and rotate the shape on screen using mouse. We would like to test automate the view rendering. I could not find any test framework for this issue and I would like to know how 3D test is done in non manual matter

• Building InstallShield based Installers using Team Build 2010

  Last few weeks, I have been working on Application Packaging stuff using all the widely used tools like InstallShield, WISE, WiX and Visual Studio Installer. So, I thought it would be good to post about how to Build the Installers developed using these tools with Team Build 2010. This post will focus on how to build the InstallShield generated packages using Team Build 2010. For the release of VS2010, Microsoft has partnered with Flexera who are the makers of InstallShield to create InstallShield Limited Edition, especially for the customers of Visual Studio. First Microsoft planned to release WiX (Windows Installer Xml) with VS2010, but later Microsoft dropped  WiX from VS2010 due to reasons which are best known to them and partnered with InstallShield for Limited Edition. It disappointed lot of people because InstallShield Limited Edition provides only few features of InstallShield and it may not feasable to build complex installer packages using this and it also requires License, where as WiX is an open source with no license costs and it has proved efficient in building most complex packages. To create a InstallShield project in Visual Studio and Build it using Team Build 2010, first you have to add the InstallShield Project template  to your Solution file. If you want to use InstallShield Limited edition you can add it from FileàNewà project àother Project Types àSetup and Deploymentà InstallShield LE and if you are using other versions of InstallShield, then you have to add it from  from FileàNewà project àInstallShield Projects. Here, I’m using  InstallShield 2011 Premier edition as I already have it Installed. I have created a simple package for TailSpin Application which has a Feature called Web, few components and a IIS Web Site for  TailSpin application.   Before started working on this, I thought I may need to build the package by calling invoke process activity in build process template or have to create a new custom activity. But, it got build without any changes to build process template. But, it was failing with below error message. C:\Program Files (x86)\MSBuild\InstallShield\2011\InstallShield.targets (68): The "InstallShield.Tasks.InstallShield" task could not be loaded from the assembly C:\Program Files (x86)\MSBuild\InstallShield\2010Limited\InstallShield.Tasks.dll. Could not load file or assembly 'file:///C:\Program Files(x86)\MSBuild\InstallShield\2011\InstallShield.Tasks.dll' or one of its dependencies. An attempt was made to load a program with an incorrect format. Confirm that the <UsingTask> declaration is correct, that the assembly and all its dependencies are available, and that the task contains a public class that implements Microsoft.Build.Framework.ITask. This error is due to 64-bit build machine which I’m using. This issue will be replicable if you are queuing a build on a 64-bit build machine. To avoid this you have to ensure that you configured the build definition for your InstallShield project to load the InstallShield.Tasks.dll file (which is a 32-bit file); otherwise, you will encounter this build error informing you that the InstallShield.Tasks.dll file could not be loaded. To select the 32-bit version of MSBuild, click the Process tab of your build definition in Team Explorer. Then, under the Advanced node, find the MSBuild Platform setting, and select x86. Note that if you are using a 32-bit build machine, you can select either Auto or x86 for the MSBuild Platform setting.  Once I did above changes, the build got successful.

• What are some great resources about programming contemporary GUIs and GUI architecture patterns?

  So I've read Martin Fowler's old blog post http://martinfowler.com/eaaDev/uiArchs.html which describes various approaches to building GUI from an architecture point of view, discussing patterns and how they were used. But this blog post was written in 2006. Since then, there must have been some new ideas in the field? I was curious whether anyone knows about a similar guide to GUI architectures, but describing contemporary systems? The reason I'm interested in something abstract and theoretical to read is because it really is difficult and time consuming to ACTUALLY learn how ALL of the contemporary frameworks work, given their diversity and the diversity of the languages they are written in. I am primarily a web developer, so I'm familiar with Rails and some Javascript frameworks. But I would also like to know how GUI is built on Android or in Cocoa or in Windows, but without having to learn all of those things.
