• In search of database delivery practitioners and enthusiasts

  We know from speaking with many of you at tradeshows and user groups that database delivery is not a factory production line. During planning, evaluation, quality control, and disaster mitigation, the people having their say at each step means that successful database deployment is a carefully managed course of action. With so many factors involved at every stage, we would love to find a way for our software to help out, by simplifying processes, speeding them up or joining together the people and the steps that make it all happen. We’re hoping our new research group for database delivery (SQL Server and Oracle) will help us understand the views and experiences of those of you out there in the trenches managing database changes. As part of our new group, we’ll be running a variety of research sessions, including surveys and phone interviews, over coming months. If you have opinions to share on Continuous Integration or Continuous Delivery for databases, we’d love to hear from you. Your feedback really will count as the product teams at Red Gate build plans. For some of our more in-depth sessions, we’ll also be offering participants an Amazon voucher as a thank-you for your time. • How to build Visual Studio Setup projects (.vdproj) with TFS 2010 Build ?

  Out of the box, Team Foundation Server 2010 Build does not support building of setup projects (.vdproj). Although, you can modify DefaultTemplate.xaml or create your own in order to achieve this. I had to try bunch of different blog post's and finally got it working with a mixture of all those posts.   Since you don’t have to go through this pain again, I have uploaded the Template which you can use right away : https://skydrive.live.com/redir?resid=65B2671F6B93CDE9!310 Download and CheckIn this template into your source control. Modify your Build Definition to use this template. Unless you have CheckedIn the template, it wont show up in the template selection section in the process task of build definition. In your Visual Studio Solution Configuration Manager, make sure you specify to build the setup project also. You might get this warning in your build result: “The project file “*.vdproj” is not support by MSBuild and cannot be build. Hope it helps. • Share one monitor with another user and display their screen as well

  My housemate and I just started playing the original RollerCoaster Tycoon again - what a nostalgia trip! Anyways, we both have two monitors, and would like to view the other's game on the secondary monitor while playing, since we're in different rooms. VNC-like applications sorta work, but they require two separate instances running (one to share each direction), and as a whole are rather slow and clumsy. We don't need any remote control at all, just viewing. I'm using XP, he Win7. We could probably get it to run through some means in Linux, if necessary.

• How to add a permanent redirect (301) for an htm file in IIS 7

  Looking in Web Analytics I could see several external sites pointing at an old .htm file on my web server that no longer existed, so I thought I would get IIS to redirect to the new .aspx replacement. How hard could it be? This has annoyed me for quite a while today so here is the answer. 1. Install the Http Redirection module - this is not installed by default!! Windows 7 Start->Control Panel->Programs and Features->Turn Windows Features on or off. Internet Information Services->World Wide Web Services->Common Http Features->HTTP Redirection. Windows Server 2008 Start->Administrative Tools->Server Manager. Roles->Web Server (IIS). Role Services->Add Role Services. Common Http Features->HTTP Redirection. 2. Edit your web.config file <configuration>     .....     <location path="oldfile.htm">         <system.webServer>             <httpRedirect enabled="true" destination="/newfile.aspx" exactDestination="true" childOnly="true" httpResponseStatus="Permanent" />         </system.webServer>     </location>     ..... </configuration> When a user clicks or Google crawls ‘oldfile.htm’ it will get a permanent redirect to ‘/newfile.aspx’ - and should take any Page Rank to the new file.  #

  An interview with JavaOne Rock Star Martijn Verburg, by yours truly, titled “Challenging the Diabolical Developer: A Conversation with JavaOne Rock Star Martijn Verburg,” is now up on otn/java. Verburg, one of the leading movers and shakers in the Java community, is well known for his ‘diabolical developer” talks at JavaOne where he uncovers some of the worst practices that Java developers are prone to. He mentions a few in the interview: * “A lack of communication: Software development is far more a social activity than a technical one; most projects fail because of communication issues and social dynamics, not because of a bad technical decision. Sadly, many developers never learn this lesson.* No source control: Some developers simply store code in local file systems and e-mail the code in order to integrate their changes; yes, this still happens.* Design-driven design: Some developers are inclined to cram every design pattern from the Gang of Four (GoF) book into their projects. Of course, by that stage, they've actually forgotten why they're building the software in the first place.” He points to a couple of core assumptions and confusions that lead to trouble: “One is that developers think that the JVM is a magic box that will clean up their memory and make their code run fast, as well as make them cups of coffee. The JVM does help in a lot of cases, but bad code can and will still lead to terrible results! The other trend is to try to force Java (the language) to do something it's not very good at, such as rapid Web development. So you get a proliferation of overly complex frameworks, libraries, and techniques trying to get around the fact that Java is a monolithic, statically typed, compiled, OO environment.   Where is Stakeholder Management in OUM?  Stakeholder Management typically falls into the purview of the Project Manager, which means much of the associated guidance is found in the OUM Manage Focus Area (a.k.a. Manage).  There is no process in Manage named Stakeholder Management, but this “touch point” can be found in a variety of other processes including Bid Transition (BT), Communication Management (CMM) and Organizational Change Management (OCHM). •         Stakeholder management starts in the Bid Transition process with Stakeholder Analysis •         This Stakeholder Analysis is used to build the Project Team Communication Plan in the Communication Management process. •         Stakeholder management should be executed during the Execution and Control phase.  For example, as issues are resolved, the project manager should take the action item to follow up with the affected stakeholders to ensure they are aware that the issue has been resolved. •       The broader topic of Stakeholder management is also addressed very thoroughly in the Organizational Change Management process in the Implement Focus Area, which is a touch point to the Organizational Change Management process in Manage. • Windows 2003 Server on a domain, XP client PCs on a workgroup - file share without authentication?

  I have a windows 2003 server on a domain and client PCs running XP on a workgroup. I have created a file share on the server that should be accessible by the client PCs. I even set the security and sharing to 'Everyone' just to test. When I try to access the file share from any of the XP machines, I get an authentication prompt that displays asking for credentials, even though 'Everyone' has full control currently (just for testing purposes). Why is it asking to authenticate? I need it to where it doesn't ask to authenticate. I also made sure passwords were set on all XP machines since I found this could be one possible issue and they all were. Any ideas? Thanks!

• Amavis / Atermime - Dynamic Email Signatures (Disclaimers)

  I am running a basic iredmail install with amavis, postfix, dovecot. I want to use the declaimer feature to automatically append a disclaimer (in our case a signature). The reasoning for this is that clients (ipad, outlook, etc) don’t have to be configured with signature settings, and that we have corporate control over the actual signatures that are posted. Instead of: '[email protected]' => 'boss.domain.com.txt' I am trying to get to %mailbox + ‘@’ + %domain => %mailbox + “.” + %domain + ‘.txt’ This way we can simply use a script to generate the .txt / .htm signature files using just mysql / php. • Publishing and setting permissions to a Linux share to AD

  I have a Linux share that I want to publish to users on my Active Directory domain. I'd like to be able to control the permissions to access that share using security groups. So say I have a share named "Share" on my Linux machine named "Linux" with IP address 192.168.1.2. I publish \\192.168.1.2\Share in AD and make it so that only people who are part of the "IT" security group can access it. What's to stop anyone who's not in the "IT" security group from just going to explorer and typing in \\192.168.1.2\Share or \\Linux\Share into their Explorer to access this share? Do I need to set up permissions on the Linux file server?

• Debian 5 is randomly shutting down.

  My debian 5 vps is suffering from random shutdowns. I reinstalled it several times, the hosts moved me to a different physical box, check the install image and said everyone else also uses it and is fine. • What are the common mistakes in 'tailored Scrum approaches'?

  I have seen this before. Management wants to be agile and be scrummified, but does not want to step out of the status quo. My latest observation is no different; here, the Scrum is 'tailored' to the organization; specifically into a weird many-people-process. The diagram showing the different participants. I am putting together a document listing why this will not work. Here are the obvious ones: 1. There are product owner agents (an obvious WTF), who report to the product owner: causing dilution of decision making capability 2. There is a role that looks similar to a manager in the traditional approach - development manager: an obvious attempt at command-and-control model 3. The ScrumMaster's role includes collecting timesheets, which are used to track progress instead of burndown charts: detrimental to agile's efforts to build teams with motivated individuals Leaving the question "how would you convince the management?", my question is more at, "what else do you see as failures in this/similar 'tailored Scrum approaches'? EDIT: The diagram might use a few more details 1. The development manager is not part of the development team, with not very clearly defined responsibilities, except: developer performance assessemnt, recruitment, etc., 2. There are more than two teams (with ScrumMaster+development manager+dev team) with the same product owner for all teams!

• MySQL proxy HA with no need to reconnect after node failure

  I use MySQL with Galera wsrep to get synchronous replication, that part it's up and running I need to setup a kind of proxy to handle client connections. Since any node in cluster can fail, clients will not connect nodes directly, but only via proxy. Currently I use Galera Load Balancer which does it work, but with one exception: if one node fails, all clients connected via proxy to that node get connection error and need to reconnect. I have no control over server applications connected to proxy and some of them can't reconnect automatically and need manual restart. So the question is how to force proxy automatically redirect already connected applications to new data node, without need to reconnect?

• Varnish doesn't seem to be caching

  I've setup a Varnish cache mirror to sit in front of a file server, but it seems to be endlessly re-downloading data from my file server. There's about 100GB of data in total, but so far Varnish has downloaded 800GB from my file server. • Verfication vs validation again, does testing belong to verification? If so, which?

  I have asked before and created a lot of controversy so I tried to collect some data and ask similar question again. E.g. The code implements proper event sequence, consistent interfaces, correct data and control flow, completeness, appropriate allocation timing and sizing budgets, and error definition, isolation, and recovery. and The software components and units of each software item have been completely and correctly integrated into the software item Not sure how to verify without testing but it is not there as a technique. From IEEE: Verification: The process of evaluating software to determine whether the products of a given development phase satisfy the conditions imposed at the start of that phase. [IEEE-STD-610]. Validation: The process of evaluating software during or at the end of the development process to determine whether it satisfies specified requirements. [IEEE-STD-610] At the end of development phase? That would mean UAT.. So the question is, what testing (unit, integration, system, uat) will be considered verification or validation? I do not understand why some say dynamic verification is testing, while others that only validation. An example: I am testing an application. System requirements say there are two fields with max. lenght of 64 characters and Save button. Use case say: User will fill in first and last name and save. When checking the fields and Save button presence, I would say its verification. When I follow the use case, its validation. So its both together, done on the system as a whole.

• Is there analog of aticonfig --set-powerstate for open source radeon driver?

  I'm running Ubuntu 9.04 on relatively old laptop with ATI Mobility x600 inside. On the last version of Ubuntu, when I was able to run proprietary fglrx driver, I was able to slow down graphic card by aticonfig --set-powerstate 1 and save some battery charge. Now I forced to run open source driver as ATI decided to drop support for old cards. But I can't find a way to control power states now except relying on DynamicClocks option in xorg.conf. But I really know better when and what powerstate I want, so is there a tool that let me change power state manually or at least let me somehow change the behavior of automatic power state selection?

• Remote Desktop over SSH SOCKS proxy to bypass firewall

  Hi folks, I'm trying to connect to a Windows server from my Mac using RDC2.1 for Mac. The problem is the server I need to connect to is guarded by the evil dragon - IP-based access control on a completely separate network. I have an IP I can get in on, but it's at my office (i.e. a completely separate network). Because that network isn't set up for VPN, I've set up a SOCKS proxy through an SSH tunnel (which is all working fine). (SSH proxy) Me (on my Mac) ----------> Office Linux box ----> Windows server (home network) (office network) (other network) From my Linux server in my office (the SSH server) I can telnet to port 3389 on the Windows server, no problem. But from my Mac I can't get so much as a squeak out of it. Any ideas?

• What is wrong with my game loop/mechanic?

  I'm currently working on a 2d sidescrolling game prototype in HTML5 canvas. My implementations so far include a sprite, vector, loop and ticker class/object. Which can be viewed here: http://elias-schuett.de/apps/_experiments/2d_ssg/js/ So my game essentially works well on todays lowspec PC's and laptops. But it does not on an older win xp machine I own and on my Android 2.3 device. I tend to get ~10 FPS with these devices which results in a too high delta value, which than automaticly gets fixed to 1.0 which results in a slow loop. Now I know for a fact that there is a way to implement a super smooth 60 or 30 FPS loop on both devices. Best example would be: http://playbiolab.com/ I don't need all the chunk and debugging technology impact.js offers. I could even write a super simple game where you just control a damn square and it still wouldn't run on a equally fast 30 or 60 fps. Here is the Loop class/object I'm using. It requires a requestAnimationFrame unify function. • Exchange 2010 install locks out high level accounts

  Basically, when we installed Exchange 2010 alongside our Exchange 2003 server (we assume), this is what caused our problem. The Exchange 2010 server is not active, just running on the domain. What's actually going on is that user groups like Enterprise Admins are getting a single deny flag on Full Control over mailboxes currently residing on the Exchange 2003 server which is preventing any of us from making changes. It says these permissions are inherited from the Parent Object, but we have no idea which one that is. Any idea on how to go about fixing this?

This is the bit I really can't get my head around. So if the swipe generates a lot of velocity then the wheel will carry on moving slightly in that direction until the overall force which pulls the wheel back to the starting position kicks in. Any ideas/code snippets?

According to Apple: You can ... use one Apple ID for iCloud services and another Apple ID for store purchases However, the method described Enter the Apple ID you want to use for iCloud in Control Panel Network and Internet iCloud. Enter the Apple ID you want to use for Store purchases (including iTunes in the Cloud and iTunes Match) in iTunes iTunes Store. would require that all iOS devices share the same iCloud account if they use iTunes on the same PC. Short of having one PC per family member, is there a method to use different iCloud accounts on each iOS device?

• How Do I Change the Windows7 LAN Proxy Config from the Command Line

  In Windows7, Is it possible to define/change the proxy config from the command line ? So, using the gui, I would go: Start Control Panel Network and Internet Internet Options Connections LAN Settings and then - enable/disable the proxy - define IP:port of proxy server But I would like to rather do this from the command line (so that I can run the command from a batch-file with a shortcut key - enabling me to switch proxy configs using a short-cut, rather than having to wade through the MS wizard). I've looked at using netsh.exe to change the settings for WinHTTP, but this seems to be thr wrong thing to do, as the WinHTTP setting do not appear to be related to the LAN settings. Much appreciated folks.

• Keyboard-shortcut key-press-detection sensitivity settings

  last week I switched from Ubuntu 10.10 to 12.04 and after setting up my keyboard shortcuts, e.g., CTRL+ALT+E for my favorite editor and CTRL+ALT+X for the terminal, I noticed that the behavior when pressing the appropriate keys changed somehow. I know this is very subjective and I am not 100% percent sure if I am suddenly just too lazy when using my keyboard, but here is what I noticed: To run your shortcuts, you usually press the modifiers first and in addition press the alphanum key. Now, if I hold the modifiers down very consciously and press the alphanum key afterwards everything works fine. However, I noticed that I may often release the modifiers a bit too early. In Ubuntu 10.10 (metacity/compiz) my keyboard shortcuts would still execute and my tools would pop up. This does not work anymore in 12.04. Nevertheless, I still believe the old behavior to be more intuitive and would like to have it back. I a nutshell: Is there a parameter to control the shortcut-key-press detection behavior? I already searched the ubuntu keyboard options and searched for "keyboard" in gconf-editor but could not find any hints so far.

• Ubuntu 13.04 to 13.10: Filesystem check or mount failed

  I attempted to upgrade from Ubuntu 13.04 to 13.10 today, and mid upgrade the system started flaking out, and eventually locked up entirely. I was forced to restart the computer, and am now unable to get the computer to boot up at all. When I boot currently, it takes me to the GRUB menu, and I can choose to boot normally, or boot in an older version. I have tried several things, which I list below, but no matter what, when I try to finish booting into Ubuntu, I receive the following error: Filesystem check or mount failed. A maintenance shell will now be started. CONTROL-D will terminate this shell and continue booting after re-trying filesystems. Any further errors will be ignored root@ubuntu-computername:~# I have fun fsck -f and everything appears correct, no errors are reported. and it passes all 5 checks.
