  • Anti-glare filter for touch enabled Netbook?

    Is it possible to put an anti-glare filter on a touch enabled Netbook without disabling the touch functionality? If yes, would it also be possible to remove the filter without damaging the screen? In my case it's an Acer 1420p (the PDC edition). It's a good machine but unfortunately you can also use it as a mirror.

  • Recording screen-casts on another computer

    We're trying to record the desktops of users using demo versions of our software (this is an in-house lab setup). We need to have the recording happen on a separate computer (just across the room), so that the recording software doesn't interfere with the user. Every screen recording software I've seen will only record what's happening on the computer its installed on; ie, you can't record what's happening on another computer. So it seems I need to cobble together a solution (unless anyone knows of software that will do this). Getting the video to the other computer seems easy enough. I'm using TightVNC with the DFMirage driver on the test computer. The recording computer connects to the test computer with TightVNC and then uses CamStudio to record what's happening. The real problem is how to deal with the audio. We need to record both what the user is saying (through a headset mic) as well as the sounds produced by the test computer. But VNC doesn't transmit audio. :( I'm not sure how to get both audio streams (mic and sounds) over to the recording computer. Any ideas?

  • How can I make the iTunes podcast count ignore selected podcasts?

    Hi all, Until recently I have only listened to news type podcasts with people talking, like TWiT and Security Now. I also like music, so decided to subscribe to some other music related podcasts, however I don't want these to appear in my podcasts count in iTunes on the left hand side. I downloaded a load of old ones from the music related podcasts, and now I can't see at a glance how many news podcasts I have to listen to. I know it sounds really picky, but if it can be done, I would be a little bit happier. Of course I did some googling, but turned up a blank. Would guess it needs some form of plugin. Using the latest version of iTunes at the time of posting. Thanks in advance.

  • Mouse for a lefty?

    As a programmer, I'm fairly particular about my keyboard and mouse. One thing I've only recently noticed is that the mice I tend to prefer don't work well for my five-year-old. He's left-handed, but ends up mousing with his right hand on the computer because (a) that's where the mouse is, and (b) most mice are designed for right-handed people anyway. So, a couple of questions: If you're left-handed and you mouse with your left hand, do you have any recommendations on good mice? If you have a lefty in your household (whether or not it's you), is there an easy way to swap settings between left-handed and right-handed mouse buttons? One way is Control Panel Mouse Check the box on the first tab OK. Do you know of anything faster? Or, better yet, what I'd really like is a way to reverse those settings on only one particular mouse, which would be designated as my son's mouse.

  • Causes of hard crashes on Windows XP and how to debug

    I am occasionally seeing hard lockups on XP: totally unresponsive to keyboard/mouse, screen freezes at time of crash, no SSH/VNC possible. Very intermittent, nothing in the logs. I never see a blue screen on any kind of error message. This morning I logged in via VNC, logged out again, 20 minutes later physically sat at PC and it crashed around the time of VNC logout. I tend to suspect video cards in these kind of situations but it's a modern-ish card with modern drivers (one revision back, but this has been happening for 5 revisions or more) and normally would at least see a blue screen I expect. What would you suspect? Where can I look or what can I set up for more information? Bear in mind that this happens about once every 3 or 4 weeks, so extensive logging or intrusive monitoring isn't really an option.

  • Bookmarks folder on two machines not syncing

    I have Chromium installed on a Ubuntu 12.04 machine and Chrome on a Windows 7 machine. Both are updated to newest stable release. I am logged in on both machines with the same Google account. I created a folder A on my Windows machine and bookmarked some pages. A few hours later and before the folder appeared, I created a folder named A on the Ubuntu machine and continued adding links to it. Now, both the folders are not syncing and contain links local to each machine only. Is there any way to resolve this?

  • Firefox's master password does not protect my web accounts

    I've set up a master password in Firefox 3.6 but it's not working as I expected. I always save my passwords within Firefox for frequently visited sites like Facebook, Yahoo! mail, Gmail, Twitter etc. and this way I don't have to type in my password every time I open that site. When I open Firefox, it asks for the master password but when I click Cancel, it opens normally, and lets me directly in my Facebook page, or Yahoo! Mail page. Why doesn't it protect my accounts? This way, anyone using my computer can see my accounts and it's totally pointless for me to use this master password. How can I protect my accounts with saved passwords in Firefox?

  • Alternative to arrow keys in Google Chrome location bar

    I like Google Chrome because it is fast but I don't like using the arrow keys in the location bar to complete URLs. Is there any extension, or setting I'm missing, that allows me to use the Tab key (or other customizable key) for completion like in Firefox? I am an Emacs user and am aware of Conkeror. I just wanted to give Google Chrome a fair chance. Edit: I'm using version 4.0.266.0 on Linux.

  • Multiple "from" addresses for single Exchange account in Outlook 2007

    I have a single Exhange account with multiple aliases (e-mail addresses), for which it recieves incoming mail messages. Using "rules" it is possible to have the incoming messages sorted into folders depending on the address they are sent to. When composing and sending messages from Outlook, the primary address of the exchange account is used in the "From" header. Without adding additional mail accounts (I really only have one), is it possible to learn Outlook about the alias addresses, making them available as "From" addresses when composing new messages?

    I'm trying to install APC for PHP 5.3 in the easiest way possible. I love Homebrew so I started down that route. I was able to install PHP 5.3.6 with this command: brew install https://github.com/adamv/homebrew-alt/raw/master/duplicates/php.rb --with-mysql I think this is supposed to install PHP, Pear, and PECL. It seems to install these just fine. Now when I try to install APC: $ pecl install apc downloading APC-3.1.9.tgz ...     I'm tring to install NetLimiter 3 (3.0.0.10, x64) on my Windows 7 x64 machine. At the driver installation step, I'm getting an error: Error 0x8004a029: Couldn't install the network component. (InstallNdisIMDriver) UPDATE 2010-09-20: I received a response to my support request: Hi Simon, It seems that problem is rather on your system than in NL3. Too many networking applications (VPN, Virtual computers) are installed on your machine and they are preventing NL3 from proper installation. In order to install NetLimiter 3, try to disable/temporarily remove these apps. Several users had the same problem and shuffling with adapter and networking software helped them.   • Problems with Xen installation

    Hello, I have CentOS 5.4 installed. Now I'm trying to install Xen with out connecting to Internet (I have any driver for modem, so I search on Inernet only from Windows). All I have are 7 installation disks. First I done was to find kind of some add/remove programs wizard but it needed connection to Inernet. Second I try was to find Xen rpm on all disks and install it. But I fell on some dependency of some dependency. Third I attempted was to boot from first disk and do upgrade, but also it was unsuccessfully... So my question is: is there some way to install Xen from CentOS installation disks with out network?   • What does the "Maximum Frequency" number mean in the Windows Resource Monitor?

    In the Windows Resource Monitor's CPU tab, there is a status box and graph for the "Maximum Frequency", right next to the "CPU Usage" values. What does this mean? The value is sometimes over 100% on my system... what could that imply? By looking at CPU-z's real-time report of the processor's clock speed, it seems to be loosely related to what frequency the CPU is running at, which would imply that it means "percent of maximum possible frequency the CPU is running at"; this would be of relevance on systems with SpeedStep and/or TurboBoost technology (or similar). Furthermore, setting the system to "power saving mode" lowers the "maximum frequency" value to around 60%, while setting it to "high performance" mode sets it to around 110%. However, the percentage does not seem to exactly correlate to the CPU speed being shown. What value is this actually representing then?

  • Can't install any drivers at all on Windows 8. Error 0x000003F9

    I suddenly can't install any drivers at all on my Windows 8 Pro x64 install. It doesn't matter what kind of driver it is, nothing will install. Everything ends with error 0x000003F9: The system has attempted to load or restore a file into the registry, but the specified file is not in a registry file format. When Windows Update tries to install a driver, it just gives error code 800703F9 and says that "Windows Update ran into a problem." I've already done a scan of system files with sfc, tried another user account, done a chkdsk, and a few more things, but nothing works. The problem started when I tried to install drivers for my printer earlier today and suddenly started getting messages saying that "Windows Modules Installer has stopped working." I decided to restart and was being greeted with the recovery boot options. I shut the computer down, but when I booted it back up the same thing happened, so I did a repair your pc, and was able to boot into the OS properly. Then I rebooted into my external drive and did a chkdsk on the Windows 8 install that started acting funny. When I booted back into Windows 8, I wasn't able to install any drivers. They all keep coming up with the same error. And I can't seem to find anything at all on this issue. Any help would be much appreciated.   • Excel 2007: Named ranges problems when linking workbooks

    I've 30+ workbooks each with 5 specific worksheets (formated the same). Each worksheet's data needs to be linked to a master workbook, so that I end up with 5 master workbooks and all the specific data in one long table format $A$2:$I$750. (Are you still with me? ;)) I don't have access to a database, so I'm having to link the sheets to their master workbook directly. I've highlighted the data I need; named the range; and then tried referencing this from my master workbook. I get the #Value error symbol when I try to link (=[WorkbookName]!MyNamedRange) to a cell that doesn't match the top left cell of my range. Example: MyNamedrange is always =$A$2:$I43$ on one specific sheet. On my master workbook it works if it's referenced at A2 but I get #Value if it's referenced A1, or A44. Any ideas? I'm trying to link my data in one continous table so I can run a pivot on it, and other things. Can it be done like this, or should I just copy and paste? I'm trying to keep things 'linked'so I do not need to spend time C&Ping all day. Many thanks Mike.

  • Mac claims to have connected to wireless network, but hasn't

    I am attempting to connect a new mac OSX 10.6.5 laptop to a wireless network (I am a windows expert but a mac novice). It used to connect without problem to the network when I had the security set to "64 bit wep". Now I have changed the security on my belkin router to "WPA-PSK (no server)". I have two PC's and an old mac connecting via the new security setting without problem. Now I have the problem that on the new mac, the wireless icon is indicating a good connection (5 dark bars). Also the network name has a tick next to it on the wireless drop down menu. But I can not view any websites. I can not even connect to the router by typing 192.168.2.1 into a browser address bar. Any ideas where I went wrong?

  • Problems with word completion on Windows Mobile

    For "some reason" the word completion function on my windows mobile phone (HTC Diamond, rebadged as a T-Mobile MDA Compact IV (UK) running WM6.1 with HTC Touch Flo 3D) hasn't worked since one of my firends was taking a look at the phone (I remember him bitching about it being too obtrusive for him, as an iPhone fanboy). I've checked all the obvious settings ( Start Input Word Completion ) and everything looks set there; I tried a hard reset, to no avail and even tried upgrading the ROM t the latest from my network provider. I even tried walking into the store where I bought the phone, and the staff couldn't fix the issue. I still have my old handset, which also runs WM6.1 (a T-Mobile MDA Compact III (UK), albeit without Touch Flo 3D), and the word completion works on there, so I'm a little confused as to why I can't get it to work again on my new handset. Can anybody identify why this might not be working, or help me fix it? Edit: Even "Touch Input Settings" has both "Word Completion in T9 mode" and "Word Completion in ABC mode" checked. The full qwerty keyboard option is in T9 mode, and word completion works for this input method; It still does not work for my preferred, "Letter Recogniser" method.
