• Worker processes not starting in IIS 7.5. What should I check?

  I have a Windows 7 machine (Windows version 6.1.7601 SP1 Build 7601) with IIS installed. At some point the installation appears to have become 'corrupted' in some way, as any requests are now met with the message: Service Unavailable HTTP Error 503. The service is unavailable. In IIS manager IIS is started and the app pool I am using reports itself as 'Started', yet there is no w3wp.exe process listed in the process list in task manager (I am a local admin and have clicked the 'Show processes from all users' button. I have enabled logging for the web site (at default location of %SystemDrive%\inetpub\logs\LogFiles), but this folder is empty. I am assuming that this log output is written by w3wp.exe as it handles requests (no w3wp.exe, no log file?). Presumably there is another layer of request handling that is responsible for starting the worker processes, does thsi layer have log files I can check, and/or can I uninstall/re-install that layer? • Can't find new.h - getting gcc-4.2 on Quantal?

  I've been trying to compile the Valve Source SDK (2007) on my machine, but I keep running into the same error: In file included from ../public/tier1/interface.h:50:0, from ../utils/serverplugin_sample/serverplugin_empty.cpp:13: ../public/tier0/platform.h:46:17: new.h: No such file or directory I'm pretty new to C++ coding and compiling, but using apt-file search I tried to use every single suggestion for the required files in the Makefile (libstdc++.a and libgcc_eh.a), and none worked. I then found a note in the Makefile saying gcc 4.2.2 is recommended - I assume the older code won't work with the newer version, but gcc-4.2 is unavailable in 12.10. So my question/s is/are: If my assumption is right - how do I get gcc 4.2.2 on Quantal? If my assumption is wrong - what else could be the problem here? • Problem connecting to MySQL with zend

  I've set up a virtual host on my local machine (windows xp with xampp installed), have installed zend there and am now trying to connect to the MySQLdatabase. I get the following error message: Message: SQLSTATE[HY000] [2003] Can't connect to MySQL server on ''myhost.com'' (10060) All the tips I've found via google haven't helped. I use kaspersky antivirus and have added port 3306 to the allowed list for MySQL and Apache. I've also pinged myhost.com:3306 and get a response (with ip address 67.63.50.51), though localhost:3306 and 127.0.0.1:3306 aren't found. I've checked that other apps can still access MySQL if the virtual host is pointed at them instead and my non zend apps do work. I guess I have to do something further to the port, or maybe force the app to use a different port, but am not sure how to do either. Any help appreciated.

  Hello. I have a server 2008 64 bit machine with php5 via fastcgi installed. I want to run a .php script every day at 3 AM. I set up a task and "Last Run Result" says "%1 is not a valid Win32 application" The event properties describe more failure: "Task Scheduler failed to launch action "D:\InetPub\tools\something\build.php" in instance "{88cc01f4-9554-4b8f-9836-34d806337d7f}" of task "\Something". Additional Data: Error Value: 2147942593." Task Category: Action failed to start Is it possible to run scripts using the task scheduler? If not, how should I go about automating the execution of a php script? Thanks

  I have shared folder with an app on win 2008 server. After successful maping of this shared folder from other PC in local network can be open only text files and images. App (.exe) cannot be run. (App works fine, is runing on other server win 2003. Win 2008 is new instalation on new machine.) Is there extra setting to allow it? Loged as administrator Ganted all permission to account in sharing properties (read, write etc.)

• How to prevent people taking software home?

  Most companies I have worked at have had either a collection of disks or a network share with the installs of the commonly used software in them. This is to allow the IT dept and skilled users to install the software they need on their work machines very easily. However some users would see this as an opportunity to get "free" software for their home machines. I've seen the draconian approach of locking the machine down completely, but that does not work well (in my view - if you disagree feel free to comment on it) because You add so much extra work to IT Users get that big brother feeling So how do you find a way to prevent users from taking home software but still allowing them to install what they need? You can make the assumption that most of the users in the organisations I work in are smart enough to install software, I'm not worried about the tea lady here.

• Windows 2003 server RRAS on VPC

  I'm trying to setup a L2TP VPN server(to give user access on to all my VPN instance) on a Windows 2003 instance running on my VPC. While trying to enable RRAS I'm getting error, "less than two network interfaces were detected on this machine". Eventually it's because there's only one network interface available, the which has private IP. I have elastic IP assigned to this instance as well. But RRAS can't see this. What should I do to RRAS to be able to see the interface with elastic IP?

• rsyslog server - Can you split up and organize logs?

  I recently setup one of our servers as an rsyslog server. I now have our firewall setup to log everything to that rsyslog server. But there doesn't seem to be an organization of the logs. All the firewall logs are just being dumped into the /var/log/messages on the rsyslog server. I guess I was maybe expecting them to at least be in a machine specific log file or directory. How can I organize the incoming logging? If I setup 20 servers to all log everything to a central rsyslog server, I really don't want everything being dumped into one big file or a few files. How can I setup rsyslog to tell it where to log what? Like if all the logs for a specific server were in it's own directory/file, etc... Is this possible?

• Likelihood of a hard drive PCB replacement working?

  I have a 1.5TB Seagate 7200.11 that died. The platter still spins up initially when attached to a machine, but then the drive clicks and spins down. Then the cycle repeats. I've found a few sites that sell replacement PCBs, however I don't know if the PCB is the issue, or something else. Given the symptoms above, is it at all likely that a PCB replacement would help? If not, I won't waste my money on the PCB replacement. Note: I put the drive in an external ESATA controller and tried hooking it up to a Linux box here at work and got some error messages in the logs. I can post them if anyone thinks it will help in determining whether a PCB swap would fix the problem I'm running into.

• Getting BootMgr not found errors repeatedly on Win7 x64

  So here is the basic configuration of the box: Primary RAID 1 (Mirror, Bootable): 2x 300GB WD SATA drives AMD Phenom Quad Core x64 @2.2 ASUS M3N78 Pro Board 4GB RAM Win 7 Ultimate Additionally, this box is a Host OS for several CentOS Boxes via VirtualBox. The box runs like a champ but, for whatever reason, everytime I restart the machine I get a BootMgr not found error when the box tries to boot. I pop in my Win DVD, select 'Repair Windows' then 'Fix Start Up Problems' and everything works fine...once. When I restart the box again I have to go back through this process. Any ideas on what is going on?

• Remotedesktop to windows 2008 server with 2 nics

  Hi I have 2 NICs on a Windows 2008 R2 Server. nic1 with ip address 192.168.2.1 with gatewaty 192.168.2.254 and nic2 with ip address 10.96.6.253 with no gateway. The windows 2008 server is connected to a router which is connnected to another router so if I want to connect to the windows 2008 server I use 192.168.0.31 because it is forwarded. If I use remote desktop to connect to that machine I use 192.168.0.31 and that works well, but the server has a seccond nic and I want to be able to connect with a remotedesktop to nic2. • Create samba shortcut from command line

  I'm currently wanting to deploy a setup to around 300 Macs. I have most of it scripted, but I'm having trouble creating a working alias to a samba share from the command line. I tried copying it from one Mac to another, but it loses its status as an alias, and instead OSX opens it in TextEdit. From a hexdump, it also looks like it has machine-specific information. So, say I wanted to create an alias to 'smb://server/share' on the desktop from the command line, how would I do that? I have also tried a tell in AppleScript, but it complained about the syntax (specifically, too many slashes, seemingly taking about smb://). Thanks.

• Intermittent sound on an Medion Akoya S5610

  The sound on my machine (Medion Akoya S5610) works intermittently. If I reboot enough times I do get sound. This happened before I upgraded, when running Oneiric too. I have fiddled around with alsa-base.conf, putting in different values for model in options snd-hda-intel model=but still the issue persists (although I get the impression that I am more like to have sound on the next reboot if I have edited that file although I can't be sure of this). Adding index=0 does not help the situation either. I have been thinking that this problem could be related some how to the order that driver modules are loaded. The snd-hda-intel module is also used for the sound card (ALC888) in my graphics card. Could it be that these are some how competing? If so, how do I add a preference when they are using the same module? • Best Server Ghost-Like Tool For Windows

  I'm looking for advice on which tool we should use to clone servers. In the short term, we will be cloning identical hardware but in the long run we may want to create one image and replicate that on a different class of machine. For example, as new servers are released from Dell, we will want to continue to use the same image we already made. Right now our servers are Windows (Server 2008 & Server 2008 R2), but moving forward we may need Linux support as well. Ghost Solution Suite 2.5 seems to be the canonical tool. • VMware player suspends on screensaver

  I have this problem with my VMWare player. When my host operating system either goes into screen saver or I lock the work station with Windows Key + L. VMWare player pauses or halts everything. So when i come back to the computer and there is a background task working inside the virtual machine it does not progress until i've actualy loged back on. Is there any way to stop this behaviour with VMWare player and keep it running in the background even when the screen saver or the work station is locked? Version of VMWare is: 3.0.0 build-203739

• recommendations for a lightweight linux distribution for a test server

  I'm planning on setting up a test server to experiment with some application servers (tomcat/jboss/...) and with some portals. Now the machine I've set aside for this is lightweight CPU/GPU wise(Atom D510, 4 gigabyte ram, 500 GiB hdd, onboard GPU). But it should suffice for most things, I'm more interested in the stability of JBoss/Tomcat for my purposes than the stability. However I'm having a bit of trouble picking an appropriate distribution size/performance/setup time wise/security wise since it seems I can't sneeze without another distribution popping up. I've been thinking about going for Fedora since I've read that that distribution has been optimized for Atom, but I'm not really familiar with it. My experience with Linux has mostly been limited to Ubuntu and some tinkering with puppylinux. I'm not afraid to get my hands dirty using the command line. I'm not planning on starting a discussion per se, mostly the pros/cons that people have encountered with some distributions

• Ubuntu: crypt user's home directory and protect from admin ?

  I have the following problem: I need to run some scripts on a Ubuntu machine but I do not want those scripts to be visible by anybody. What could be the best way to do that ? I was thinking of the following: create a particular user Add the scripts in this user's home directory Protect + crypt the user's home directory = Can I run the script from outside if the directory is crypted ? Can superuser see the content of the home dir ? Is there a right way to do this ? UPDATE I thing the best way would be that root own those scripts. In this case I would need to allow an another user to modify the network configuration. Is it possible to ONLY provide network rights to a user ? (via sudo or else)

• Which linux x86 hardware keystore?

  I'm terminating SSL/TLS in my DMZ and I have to assume that machine will be hacked. At which point my certificates are compromised. Previously I've used nCipher hardware keystore/accelerator to solve this issue. These cards won't reveal the private key even to root. The card performs the encryption and decryption onboard and is hardened against physical attack. The only way to get at the keys is by attaching a smart card reader to the card itself. I'm having trouble finding information about something to recreate this approach. Is this the domain of specialist switches and firewalls these days? • HP Deskjet 3600: Offline and won't stop blinking and won't print.

  Using Vista and an HP Deskjet 3600 on USB connection Normally when I unplug the printer, I open the printer queue and in the title bar it says "HP Deskjet 3600 - Use Printer Offline" then the offline message will go away and it will start printing. But for some reason, the bower button light is continually blinking. (this is the only light on the machine). The printer queue says "HP Deskjet 3600 - Offline" and when I unplug it it says "HP Deskjet 3600 - Offline - Use Printer Offline". I have tried unplugging it for a few hours, also tried turning it off for a few hours. Does anybody know what the single word Offline means? Does anybody know how I can clear out the memory in the Printer? (this is my guess as to what is causing the problem)

  At my new job, I have a production server with the following qualities: Windows (XP I think), ancient hardware Absolutely vital database No backups whatsoever Everyone in the company has full admin rights, the passwords are stored in a .txt on the global share No installers, except for the OS The machine itself is sitting on a wooden shelf 5 feet above the ground against an external wall with frequent truck traffic on the other side; the shelf is already bent from the constant load Hasn't been rebooted in $DEITY knows how long, my predecessor wasn't even sure if it would survive it UPS is installed, but since everything is hooked up to it, it would last 10 minutes tops No spare parts or hardware budget How do I make a full backup with minimal impact on the server? I'm not sure how close it is to a total meltdown. For all I know, plugging in a USB stick could kill the company, and of course it will be all my fault, since "it was running fine before you touched it". The ideal solution would be a VM, so I have a test environment as well (separate of course).

• How did Google get on my Mac?

  Am running a MacBook Pro, and have never installed Chrome, Google Earth, or anything blatantly Google. Just installed Little Snitch (are there no good free firewalls for Mac?) and see that CURL is sending to Google every few minutes, as is a request to Google update and more. Little Snitch doesn't say what program setup these requests. So, how do I find out how G got on my machine, why is it sending so many requests (every minute or so) and how do I remove it (and is it there for reasons other than to help G spy on me)?
