• Update Manager won't open (error related to pythonverbose)

  I'm having an issue with update-manager. Last night, my computer restart suddenly during the update process. Now it won't open and it keep appearing on the notifier with a message warning that an error occurred. The error is the same that is displayed when I try to open it on the terminal: Error in sitecustomize; set PYTHONVERBOSE for traceback: EOFError: EOF read where not expected Traceback (most recent call last): File "/usr/bin/update-manager", line 26, in <module> from __future__ import print_function EOFError: EOF read where not expected I've already seen some questions here, but most of them are related to problems with ppas and the source.list file. This seems to be a bug on update-manager itself. I've already tried to remove it and install again, but the problem persists. I also noted another bug: my source-center doesn't open too. • Windows - how to clone network connections entry to another machine

  Let's assume we have two Windows XP computers with identical hardware configuration, including GPRS modem connected to COM1 serial port. On the first PC we add new modem device, set up gprs connection on this port in "Network connections" folder. How avoid clicking the same procedure on second computer? Detailed questions: Where are the entries from "Network connections" stored? File, registry? Is there a possibility to clone such entry between PCs? Question as above but regarding modem entry in device manager - can it be exported from one pc and imported on second?

• Mutating Programming Language?

  For fun I was thinking about how one could build a programming language that differs from OOP and came up with this concept. I don't have a strong foundation in computer science so it might be common place without me knowing it (more likely it's just a stupid idea :) I apologize in advance for this somewhat rambling question :) Anyways here goes: In normal OOP methods and classes are variant only upon parameters, meaning if two different classes/methods call the same method they get the same output. My, perhaps crazy idea, is that the calling method and class could be an "invisible" part of it's signature and the response could vary depending on who call's an method. Say that we have a Window object with a Break() method, now anyone (who has access) could call this method on Window with the same result. Now say that we have two different objects, Hammer and SledgeHammer. If Break need to produce different results based on these we'd pass them as parameters Break(IBluntObject bluntObject) With a mutating programming language (mpl) the operating objects on the method would be visible to the Break Method without begin explicitly defined and it could adopt itself based on them). So if SledgeHammer calls Window.Break() it would generate vastly different results than if Hammer did so. If OOP classes are black boxes then MPL are black boxes that knows who's (trying) to push it's buttons and can adapt accordingly. You could also have different permission sets on methods depending who's calling them rather than having absolute permissions like public and private. Does this have any advantage over OOP? Or perhaps I should say, would it add anything to it since you should be able to simply add this aspect to methods (just give access to a CallingMethod and CallingClass variable in context) I'm not sure, might be to hard to wrap one's head around, it would be kinda interesting to have classes that adopted themselves to who uses them though. Still it's an interesting concept, what do you think, is it viable?

• Files hidden on USB hard disk because of virus, how to clean?

  I have 1 GB hard drive. First all of its contents were gone after a virus got in (when I have the drive to someone else). After research found that it was a virus may be. I run Nortan antivus and removed certain virus. Then ran malewarebytes, now ad-aware and avg 2011 antivirus. Now i could see the files on my other computer. But now I have hooked this to my new macbook pro (windows installation) and i can't see the files. The antivurs does find all the files. MacOSX wrote a 400 MB directory there which i can see but nothing else. How to fix this? Which program will fix it?

• Is there a LOGO interpreter that actually has a turtle?

  This is not a repeat of the now infamous "How do I move the turtle in LOGO?" Recently, I had the following conversation with my five year old daughter: Daughter: Daddy, do you write programs? Me: Yes! Daughter: Daddy, what's a program? Me: A program is a set of instructions that a computer follows. Daughter: Daddy, can I write a program too? Me: Sure! This got me scrambling to think of a very basic language that a five year old could get some satisfaction from mastering rather quickly. I'm ashamed to admit that the first thing that came to mind was this: 10 INPUT "Tell me a secret" A$ 20 PRINT "Wow really? :" A$ 30 GOTO 10 That isn't going to hold a five year old's attention for very long and it requires too much of a lecture. However, moving a turtle around and drawing neat pictures might just work. Sadly, my search for a LOGO interpreter yielded noting but ad ridden sites, flight simulators and a whole bunch of other stuff that I really don't want. I'm hoping to find a cross platform (Java / Python) LOGO interpreter (dare I call it simulator?) with the following features: Can save / replay commands (stored programs) Has an actual turtle Sound effects are a plus Have you stumbled across something like this, if so, can you provide a link? I hate to ask a 'shopping' sort of question, but it seemed much better than "Is LOGO appropriate for a five year old?"

• Boot time virus scan from USB drive

  I want to check for viruses on a computer that I suspect may be infected with malware. Its users are running an antivirus, but there's always the risk that something slips past and the way I see it, once the system is infected the antivirus is useless because the malware can hide itself from the AV. I think the best way to go (besides clean reinstall of the OS) would be to have an antivirus running at a boot time from a CD or a USB key. That way, the malware is just lying on the disk and cannot do any of its hide-and-seek stuff (provided the AV comes from an uninfected PC and all that). So, I'm looking for something that: Runs at boot time (off USB key or CD-ROM) Does not touch or require the local OS Discovers malware fairly well (like, Avast, AVG, Norton, whatever -- I think the're all the same anyway) Can handle Windows filesystems (FAT 32, NTFS, WinFS ;-) ) Comes from some sort of trusted source (no Windows Antivirus 2009) I know that this is no silver bullet (nothing is, really*), but I do have a feeling it's more likely to help than doing the scan* within the infected system.

• Microsoft Office- I purchased it but it is telling me that my license has been used too many times.

  I purchased a copy of Microsoft Office Student Edition last year. My computer's hard drive crashed which meant that I had to reinstall the software and use the serial code again. It is now telling me though that the number of uses has been exceeded. Is there a way to tell Microsoft that I'm trying to validate on the same machine that I was already operating on? I really don't want to have to purchase it again to run on the same machine that it was already running on.

Let me know which one of the following is your favorite article from memory lane. 2006 Auto Generate Script to Delete Deprecated Fields in Current Database In early career everytime I have to drop a column, I had hard time doing it because I was scared what if that column was needed somewhere in the code. Due to this fear I never dropped any column. I just renamed the column. If the column which I renamed was needed afterwards it was very easy to rename it back again. However, it is not recommended to keep the deleted column renamed in the database. At every interval I used to drop the columns which was prefixed with specific word. This script is 6 years old but still works. Give it a look, I am open for improvements. 2007 Shrinking Truncate Log File – Log Full – Part 2 Shrinking database or mdf file is indeed bad thing and it creates lots of problems. However, once in a while there is legit requirement to shrink the log file – a very rare one. In the rare occasion shrinking or truncating the log file may be the only solution. However, one should make sure to take backup before and after the truncate or shrink as in case of a disaster they can be very useful. Remember that truncating log file will break the log chain and while restore it can create major issue. Anyway, use this feature with caution. 2008 Simple Use of Cursor to Print All Stored Procedures of Database Including Schema This is a very interesting requirement I used to face in my early career days, I needed to print all the Stored procedures of my database. Interesting enough I had written a cursor to do so. Today when I look back at this stored procedure, I believe there will be a much cleaner way to do the same task, however, I still use this SP quite often when I have to document all the stored procedures of my database. Interesting Observation about Order of Resultset without ORDER BY In industry many developers avoid using ORDER BY clause to display the result in particular order thinking that Index is enforcing the order. In this interesting example, I demonstrate that without using ORDER BY, same table and similar query can return different results. Query optimizer always returns results using any method which is optimized for performance. The learning is There is no order unless ORDER BY is used. 2009 Size of Index Table – A Puzzle to Find Index Size for Each Index on Table I asked this puzzle earlier where I asked how to find the Index size for each of the tables. The puzzle was very well received and lots of interesting answers were received. To answer this question I have written following blog posts. I suggest this weekend you try to solve this problem and see if you can come up with a better solution. If not, well here are the solutions. Solution 1 | Solution 2 | Solution 3 Understanding Table Hints with Examples Hints are options and strong suggestions specified for enforcement by the SQL Server query processor on DML statements. The hints override any execution plan the query optimizer might select for a query. The SQL Server Query optimizer is a very smart tool and it makes a better selection of execution plan. Suggesting hints to the Query Optimizer should be attempted when absolutely necessary and by experienced developers who know exactly what they are doing (or in development as a way to experiment and learn). Interesting Observation – TOP 100 PERCENT and ORDER BY I have seen developers and DBAs using TOP very causally when they have to use the ORDER BY clause. Theoretically, there is no need of ORDER BY in the view at all. All the ordering should be done outside the view and view should just have the SELECT statement in it. It was quite common that to save this extra typing by including ordering inside of the view. At several instances developers want a complete resultset and for the same they include TOP 100 PERCENT along with ORDER BY, assuming that this will simulate the SELECT statement with ORDER BY. 2010 SQLPASS Nov 8-11, 2010-Seattle – An Alternative Look at Experience In year 2010 I attended most prestigious SQL Server event SQLPASS between Nov 8-11, 2010 at Seattle. • SQL Server Agents jobs and turning off the server

  I'm really new to SQL Agent jobs, but I am attempting to build up a maintainance regime for a server that will be turned off and on again at unknown intervals. It may run without being shutdown for a month, or it might only be turned on 9-5... we don't know and the client can't tell us because they don't know. So what I'm wondering is, what do I need to do to get SQL Server to run monthly and daily jobs either when they are due, or if the due date is missed, get them to be run when the server is next powered on. I could come up with a mish-mash of periodic jobs and 'on-power-up' jobs, but if there is something more elegant that would be wonderful. Obviously I'll need to ensure the SQL Server Agent is configure to start when the computer is powered up, but what else?

• Packet loss with all adapters on one PC only on the LAN

  I have a Windows 7 64-bit machine that is losing up to 20% of IP packets on both adapters - wireless & LAN. Browser traffic appears to be affected the most, but it is happening to all protocols. All other computers on the network are functioning fine. If I ping from my faulty machine to any machine on the LAN (wired or wirelessly), including the router/gateway and internet sites, I get up to 20% packet loss. If I do the following commands: ipconfig /release ipconfig /renew then I sometimes get my network performance back for a matter of a few seconds to less than a couple of minutes. Rebooting also works for a short period of time. This problem has been occurring for a couple of months and is getting worse. The computer used to work just fine. I updated the wireless adapter firmware the other day with no effect. Does anyone know what is happening?

• Old notebook internal display randomly not recognized

  I have an old Acer TM4001 notebook. If the laptop is powered-off, with the lid closed, when I power it on, it generally works. Then, without touching anything, if I reboot the computer the internal display wil not work anymore. To make it working again I need to shut down the pc, close and reopen the lid and then turn it on. If I close and reopen the lid if it is not working after power the pc on, it won't work. When the screen is working, closing and opening it has no effect (the data cable seems ok). The external monitor always works as expected: If the internal display is not detected, the external will be the main (and only) display. This is not OS-related. When the screen is not working I cannot see the POST. What could be the cause for this?

• Restoring using SyncBack without profiles

  I backed up my internal hard drive (C:) using SyncBack onto an external (USB) hard drive with maximum compression. I then performed a clean install of Windows Vista onto the computer. I forgot to copy the SyncBack logs before the clean install. And now when ever I try to restore a directory, the RAR/ZIP files are copied to the system hard drive instead of extracting their contents to the hard drive. Also, SyncBack is not traversing the folders during the Restore process. How can I tell SyncBack to expand the compressed files? I am running the freeware version of SyncBack. I have to create new log files (unless SyncBack put them somewhere on the external drive). My alternative is to write a program that traverses the folders on the external drive and extracts files from the RAR/ZIP files. I am using Windows Vista, Service Pack 2, and the data size prior to backup was about 200 GB. (The backup process took over 72 hours due to "hiccups").

• Server hard disk read speed and client download speed, is there a connection? [closed]

  Ok so a client's download speed is only as fast as a server's upload speed, and vice versa. Based on the answers to this post: Does upload speed depend upon download speed of the server? In other words, the data transfer rate between the two computers is only as fast as the speed of the "bottleneck". Let's pretend the two computers are in two different networks and both have 100Mbps internet connection. Ben wants a copy of a file in Mark's computer hard disk with 30Mbps read speed. Does this mean that Ben can download the file at a speed of around 30Mbps only, despite having an internet connection faster than 30Mbps?

• Where are the Microsoft downloaded app compat updates stored?

  Where are the Microsoft application compatibility update settings stored on a Windows XP, Windows Vista, and Windows 7 computer? Microsoft periodically release application compatibility updates (e.g. KB929427), where they list the shims that should be applied to a program in order to workaround known bugs in the software. Where are these app compat flags stored, and how can i see what shims are being applied? i have a feeling that a recent app compat update included a flag to force a particular piece of software, that we use, to require administrator. Because the task is scheduled to run nightly, and the running user does not have administrative privelages, the task is failing to start. The application is requiring to be elevated. It has the UAC shield overlay. The application has no RT_MANIFEST resource, and the compatibility option Run this program as administrator is disabled (per-user and all users). So all that's left is some secret global setting. i know user-specified compat flags are stored in: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE \SOFTWARE \Microsoft \Windows NT \CurrentVersion \AppCompatFlags \Layers

• what damage can be caused if scandisk is not run before defrag

  Hello, I would like to know what the damage to a drive can be if a scandisk is not performed before a disk defrag. I have looked up some sites that say a scandisk should be run to correct any issues that may be apparent on the system, making sure that the drive is free of errors before a disk defrag is done. I have to perform a defrag on a computer without having physical access to it (using remote connection). I know that the scandisk requires a reboot to the system (causing me to lose my connection) which would be difficult to restart physically if the system does not come back on by itself once rebooted (this has happened before). Any suggestions? Thank you.

• How can I make my monitor run at it's native resolution under Kubuntu 9.10?

  Hi, I have installed Kubuntu 9.10 afresh on an HP desktop computer with a Samsung SyncMaster 2243 and Intel integrated graphics card. • How do I uninstall Office Live Add-in 1.4 after installing Office 2010?

  Last night I upgraded to Office 2010 RTM from MSDN. I'm now trying to uninstall the Office Live Add-in that I used with Office 2007 as this functionality is built in to Office 2010. When I run the uninstall from control panel I get the following message: Microsoft Office Live Add-in cannot be installed because you do not have the right version of Microsoft Office installed on your computer Google has pointed to 2 solutions, both of which are pretty useless: Use the MS Windows Installer Cleanup - this is not good because all it does is remove the Installer entry from the registry, leaving all the installed files behind Uninstall Office 2010, uninstall Add-in, reinstall Office 2010 - that is just ridiculous, but typical MS response So, can I get this off my system without resorting to option 2?

• Buying Video Card for 1600x900 monitor?

  I just bought a monitor for a relative's computer (Intel 82915G chipset) which should produce 1600x900. Though the current card can produce 1600x1200, there's no way (that I know of) to force it to produce 1600x900. Assuming buying a card would be a solution, how would one find a cheap video card that can do 1600x900? They don't seem to list the modes in most ads. If I'm missing something in Windows, please let me know, but I've looked around quite a bit and tried many things (including unsupported resolutions, etc).

• Built-in webcam on Asus laptop missing under imaging devices in Windows 7

  My built-in webcam for U43JC Asus laptop (Windows 7 32 bit) did not work, saying The camera is being used by another program. I searched on the net to solve the problem and the solution that seemed to be working was to remove usb2.0 uvc 1.3m webcam and restart the computer and the webcam will automatically re-install. However, not only did the webcam not re-install automatically, but the webcam is still not working. Things have gotten only worse that now I'm missing the webcam under Imaging Devices. I even tried recovering Windows to the factory state, however, the webcam was still missing. What can I do to restore my usb2.0 uvc 1.3m webcam?

• Cer ain Key on Keyboard won' work

  So i recently spilled some beer on my keyboard and i noticed that the "T" key stopped working. So I swapped it out with a new keyboard but now the problem persists? But about 10 minutes after i restart the computer. it works for a little bit, hence this post. But soon it will stop, and not even the "On-Screen Keyboard" will register the "T" key. I am running Windows 7 and really have no idea what is going on. Any help appreciated!

• "Outlook must be online or connected to complete this action" windows XP, outlook 2007, connect to exchange using HTTP

  Hey, I can't connect to an exchange server using windows XP and outlook 2007, using the "connect anywhere over HTTP" process, it has been working until recently and the user reports no recent changes to his environment. The error is "Outlook must be online or connected to complete this action" It will prompt me for the username and password which I can enter, then it will give the errorm however this only happens when I delete the account and enter all details for the excahnge server again. The client computer that is unable to connect using outlook can connect to the HTTPS mail service and login send/receive fine. Nobody else has reported issues. making a test environment with a clean install of XP and outlook 2007 gives the same error, but using windows 7 and outlook 2007 connects perfectly fine everytime. I also removed all passwords using control keymgr.dll which didnt help. Any assistance or ideas would be appreciated, at this point nothing I've tried from technet or google works <_<

• Can't Access a file I downloaded since I don't have permissions yet I am admin?

  Hi I downloaded some file and everytime I try to copy it or move it somewhere I get these errors Windows cannot access the specified device, path , or file. You may not have the appropriate permissions to access the item. You need permission to perform this action You require permission from "user(where this is my pc name/myusername)" to make changes to this file. Yet I am an admin and it is my only account on this computer and it saying to me I need permissions to open it up from "chobo2" user yet that's the account I am logged in as. I don't get it. How do I disable this stupid message so I can access every file I want. I am using windows 7 ultimate 64bit. As far as I know I have full permissions set so I don't know why I am getting this.

• Windows 7 x64 CD to MP3 ripper

  I'm trying to find a good, simple CD-to-MP3 ripper to copy my physical CD's to my computer's hard disk. I'm running Windows 7 Professional x64 - and that appears to be a major problem. All the "usual" free- and shareware tools I've tried (CD-to-MP3, Visual MP3 and quite a few more) seem to have trouble with either 64-bit Windows, or with my HP CD/DVD built into my HP Compaq Elite 8100 machine. Does anyone have any good recommendations? I don't want to install a monster like iTunes - something really clean, small, simple would be fine. Free- or Shareware - if it works reliably and with good quality output, I'll be happy to register! Any hints are welcome!
