• should I use LaTeX and why (not)?

  I'm a student, and just finished this last semester. This summer I will be working on a project that will require a lot of documentation and reports, and I'm shivering every time I think of styling in either Word or OpenOffice. I've been wanting to learn LaTeX for a while, but I can't help but think; is it worth it? Does anyone actually use it except for academics? Is it worth taking the time it takes to learn to use it efficiently? What are the pros and cons?

  Hey Guys, I have a contoller that renders 3 different views. But I also have a common part (div) for every view. I thought that I can create an UserControl with own controller and include that control on my views (New controller and view as controll). How should I use that UserControl? Should it be a partial view? Or different approach - can I have multiple partial views on one page? I've been searching the web for the last view days and haven't found working solution that suits me. Also I want to use Strongly Typed views/data. Cheers

• How can an Android Service know that its not bound to any Activities

  I have an Android Service that I would like to keep running even after the last Activity has been popped off the stack, or the User has chosen to do something else. Essentially the Service is listening for changes on a remote server, and I would like to generate a Notification if and only if an Activity from the app isn't running(or visible). In other words, I don't want the Notifications to occur while the User is directly interacting with the app. In the case where the User is directly interacting with the app, the Service will notify the Activity and update appropriate UI elements based on the changes. I plan to implement this through the Observer pattern. How can the Service know if none of apps Activities are bound to it? Thanks, J

• Can I save my app's state at close time in iPhone OS?

  I have an app that functions much like an ebook. I have a bunch of textual information in various languages that is accessible through a number of drill down methods. When a user wants to get into where they were reading last, they currently have to navigate through the section and chapter menus to get back to where they were. An ideal solution for this would be to setup a bookmark system, which I am considering. But if I remember correctly, when iPhone OS 4 was announced, they seemed to make a big deal of the added ability to save the state of an app. Does that mean that someone using my reader app would be able to just exit right out, do whatever, and then when they came back in, it would be the reading screen just as they left it? I don't know much about how to setup a bookmarking system, I suppose it would be worth investigating, but I would probably want to just hold off for iPhone OS 4 if that is indeed what it will be capable of doing. Any thoughts or insights would be appreciated!!

• Fixing too long comment lines in Vim

  I'm looking for a convenient way to fix comments where line lengths exceed a certain number of characters in Vim. I'm fine with doing this manually with code, especially since it's not that frequent, plus refactoring long lines is often language, or even code-style dependent, but with comments this is pure drudgery. What happens is I often spot some issue in a comment, tweak one or two words and the line spills out of the, say, 80 character limit. I move the last word to the next line and then the next line spills, and so on. Does anyone know a way to do this automatically in Vim?

  I use javascript and css to build a multi-level drop down menu with following markups: <ul> <li>menu item 1</li> <ul> <li><a href="#">sub menu menu item 1</a></li> ................. This markup is generated by a custom JSTL tag <mui:menu .../> which loads menu data from a database. I hope my jsp page can behave like this: if menu data has not changed since last time I visited the page, just use browser's cache otherwise load from database... How can I do it? I don't know much detail about cache mechanism.

I have a large txt file in the below format, though details and amount of lines will change everytime: Username: john_joe Owner: John Joe Account: CLI: Default: LGICMD: Flags: Primary days: Secondary days: No access restrictions Expiration: Pwdlifetime: Last Login: Maxjobs: Maxacctjobs: Maxdetach: Prclm: Prio: Queprio: CPU: Authorized Privileges: BYPASS Default Privileges: SYSPRV This sequence is repeated a couple of thousand times for different users. I need to find every user (ideally the entire first line of the above) that has SYSPRV under "Default Permissions".   I have a form and I must notice user with alert() on exiting page while there are data in the form that had not been send. I've read that opera has a lot of problems with this. Opera 11 that is, because I need take into account only last version. So again, the alert should display on refresh, closing a tab, or closing whole browser. It would be nice to set event directly to the <form> element that would be launched on anything that leads to destroying this element.

  In case of Java, we can get the path separator using System.getProperty("path.separator"); Is there a similar way in Perl? All I want to do is to find a dir, immediate sub directory. Say I am being given two argumens $a and $b; I am splitting the first one based on the path separator and joining it again except the last fragment and comparing with the second argument. The problem is my code has to be generic and for that I need to know whats the system dependent path separator is? Could you help if there is any way to get it? TIA

  Hi... I have the following class declared. I need to retreive the class structure and the static values without instanciate it. public MyClass() { public static string field = "Value"; public nestedClass() { public static string nestedField = "NestedValue"; } } I've successfuly used GetFields and GetNestedType to recover the class structure and GetValue(null) works fine on field, but not on nestedField. Is anyone more experiencing this problem? Right now I create a mysql connection at the beginning and use the same connection through out the code. Most of the time is spent making the API calls. Will it be more efficient to create a new database connection only when it's time to store the data (below)? • I have to generate PL/SQL using Java. Most of the procedures are common. Only a few keeps changing.

  I have to generate PL-SQL code, with some common code(invariable) and a variable code. I don't want to use any external tools. Some ways that I can think: Can I go and maintain the common code in a template and with markers, where my java code will generate code in the markers and generate a new file. Maintain the common code in static constant String and then generate the whole code in StringBuffer and at last write to file. But, I am not at all satisfied with both the ideas. Can you please suggest any better ways of doing this or the use of any design patterns or anything? Thanks in Advance.

• what changes when your input is giga/terabyte sized?

  I just took my first baby step today into real scientific computing today when I was shown a data set where the smallest file is 48000 fields by 1600 rows (haplotypes for several people, for chromosome 22). And this is considered tiny. I write Python, so I've spent the last few hours reading about HDF5, and Numpy, and PyTable, but I still feel like I'm not really grokking what a terabyte-sized data set actually means for me as a programmer. For example, someone pointed out that with larger data sets, it becomes impossible to read the whole thing into memory, not because the machine has insufficient RAM, but because the architecture has insufficient address space! It blew my mind. What other assumptions have I been relying in the classroom that just don't work with input this big? What kinds of things do I need to start doing or thinking about differently? (This doesn't have to be Python specific.)

• Excel Worksheet assignment in VB.Net doesn't compile

  I'm converting a VB6 application into VB.Net and having trouble with the basics. I start off with:- Dim xl As Excel.Application Dim xlsheet As Excel.Worksheet Dim xlwbook As Excel.Workbook xl = New Excel.Application xlwbook = xl.Workbooks.Open(my_data.file_name) xlsheet = xlwbook.Sheets(1) but the last line doesn't compile; it reports Option Strict On disallows implicit conversion from 'Object' to 'Microsoft.Office.Interop.Excel.Worksheet' I can make this go away by replacing the line with xlsheet = CType(xlwbook.Sheets(1), Excel.Worksheet) but that does't look like the right thing to do to me. If the assignment is correct, I would have thought the object should naturally have the correct type. So: does anyone know what the correct thing I should be doing here?

• odd behavior setting timeouts inside a function with global references in javascript

  Here is the the function and the globals: $note_instance = Array(); $note_count = 0; function create(text){ count = $note_count++; time = 5000; $note_instance[count] = $notifications.notify("create", text); setTimeout(function(){ $note_instance[count].close() }, time); } The function simply opens a notification, a sets a timeout to close it in 5 seconds. so if i call this create("Good Note 1"); create("Good Note 2"); create("Good Note 3"); Ecah note should close 5 seconds from their creation, however always and only the last note closes, in this case "Good Note 3". Each note object has its own entry in the the $note_instance global array so the timeouts should no be overwriting themselves. What am i missing here folks? Thanks in advance

• Wrong Editing Controls Displayed in UITableView

  Hi all, I'm having a strange problem with UITableView. When the user taps the Edit button, the tableview (which is a grouped view with multiple sections) is supposed to show delete buttons for each row--except for the final row in each section, which has a green add button. When a user taps the green button, a new row is inserted, but now the final row gets a delete button. Even stranger, that delete button ACTS like an add button. So it seems there's a drawing glitch, rather than a problem in assigning the correct style. (Extensive NSLogging shows that the last cell is getting the Insert editing style correctly.) I've tried setting setNeedsDisplay on the cell and the tableView, I've tried reloading that section/row/the entire table, but the issue persists. Any ideas on how to get UITableView to explicitly redraw the editing controls?
