  • Quicksilver doesn't open PDF's like it used to

    I've been using Quicksilver for a while now but lately I've been getting this problem that QS doesn't show the Acrobat Reader icon when a PDF is selected, but goes to the "Open With" tab. See the screenshot here: http://skitch.com/niels.bom/n8nw5/google-reader-1000 Is this a bug? Or did I somehow bork a preference setting? I'm using QS B54, 3815, which is the latest AFAIK and Mac OS X 10.5.8. Thanks!

  • Why is my router not routing?

    Starting a week and half ago my router stopped working with my cable modem. I went to sleep with it working and woke up with it not. I swapped in another router and am still having issues; I was gone for 10 days so now I'm back to trying to figure it out. While I was gone I left everything (cable modem, router, and computer) powered off. My setup: Comcast Ambit cable modem (from Comcast) Netgear WGR614 v4 router -- replaced with Linksys WRT54GS v1.1 Windows XP SP3 other computers, all currently unplugged The modem is using the firmware (ver 2.105.2001) provided by Comcast; hardware version 1.3 The Linksys router is using FW ver 4.71.4 (latest for this release of HW), factory defaults I am only using the wired connections; no wireless. I have swapped out all of the cat5 cable. If I plug my computer directly into the cable modem, I can ping by name or number. Everything works perfectly. If I plug my computer into the router and the router into the modem, I cannot access anything outside of my local network. This is the exact setup I've used for the past 5 years; there were no changes in the past year. Now here's the interesting part: I can log into the Linksys router and get status information from it; everything appears good. Using the Diagnostics, I can run ping and traceroute to any site on the internet. These work perfectly. From my computer, I can ping the router and the modem. However, I cannot ping anything on the internet by with name or number. If I plug in another computer, I can ping it successfully. I've included two transcripts below that show these two attempts. Addresses, DNS, gateways, etc. look good. I cannot access the internet through either router. I am at a loss here. Suggestions? Help!   • How to stop a ICMP attack?

    We are under a heavy icmp flood attack. Tcpdump shows the result below. Altough we have blocked ICMP with iptables tcpdump still prints icmp packets. I've also attached iptables configuration and "top" result. Is there any thing I can do to completely stop icmp packets?   • Does RVM "failover" to another ruby instance on error?

    Have a strange problem in that I have a Rake task that seems to be using multiple versions of Ruby. When one fails, it seems to try another one. Details MacBook running 10.6.5 rvm 1.1.0 Rubies: 1.8.7-p302, ree-1.8.7-2010.02, ruby-1.9.2-p0 Rake 0.8.7 Gem 1.3.7 Veewee (provisioning Virtual Machines using Opcode.com, Vagrant and Chef) I'm not entirely sure the specific details of the error matter, but since it might be an issue with Veewee itself. So, what I'm trying to do is build a new box base on a veewee definition. The command fails with an error about a missing method- but what's interesting is how it fails. Errors I managed to figure out that if I only have one Ruby installed with RVM, it just fails. If I have more than one Ruby install, it fails at the same place, but execution seems to continue in another interpreter. Here are two different clipped console outputs. I've clipped them for size.   • Linux buffer cache effect on IO writes?

    I'm copying large files (3 x 30G) between 2 filesystems on a Linux server (kernel 2.6.37, 16 cores, 32G RAM) and I'm getting poor performance. I suspect that the usage of the buffer cache is killing the I/O performance. To try and narrow down the problem I used fio directly on the SAS disk to monitor the performance.   • How to boot linux direct to application on console with no login

    I have a need to start an application on bootup on the linux console and I do not have a need for any type of login or security. I do not need any ALT-F1,F2,etc virtual consoles but I would like to allow SSH access via the network port for debugging, loading, etc. The application is a SDL graphics program running with fbcon as the SDL_VIDEODRIVER if that matters. I'm currently using Fedora 10 and 12 but any distro that supports SDL using the fbcon framebuffer would be acceptable.

  • Spanning-tree setup with incompatible switches

    I have a set of eight HP ProCurve 2910al-48G Ethernet switches at my datacenter that are set up in a star topology with no physical loops. I want to partially mesh the switches for redundancy and manage the loops with a spanning-tree protocol. However, our connection to the datacenter is provided by two uplinks, each to a Cisco 3750. The datacenter's switches are handling the redundant connection using PVST spanning-tree, which is a Cisco-proprietary spanning-tree implementation that my HP switches do not support. It appears that my switches are not participating in the datacenter's spanning-tree domain, but are blindly passing the BPDUs between the two switchports on my side, which enables the datacenter's switches to recognize the loop and put one of the uplinks into the Blocking state. This is somewhat supposition, but I can confirm that, while my switches say that both of the uplink ports are forwarding, only one is passing any real quantity of data. (I am assuming that I cannot get the datacenter to move away from PVST. I don't know that I'd want them to make that significant of a change anyway.)
