  • What do you use RightScale for?

    I'm currently evaluating whether to use RightScale to manage a production environment in EC2. I intend to use Puppet for configuration management either way (the declarative approach seems far better than running scripts), am running a somewhat nonstandard stack (e.g. MongoDB), and am uncertain about how much value RightScale would add relative to Puppet + Amazon's auto-scaling + another hosted monitoring system. Those who use RightScale, what features do you find important? Is its auto-scaling support (including keeping single instances running) more powerful than Amazon's?

  • html5 video and Windows 7N

    When using Windows 7N and embedded videos for YouTube and the like my users have been getting a black box. I tracked this down to when HTML5 is being used for rendering. Other than putting a bunch of sites in compatibility mode or installing the Windows Media Pack (which resolves this issue) is there another route I can take? My guess is it's only a single registry key or DLL that says 'I'm not HTML5 compatible' but I don't have any idea how to find it.

  • encrypt multiple systems (win7 + deb)

    I've installed two operatings system on single drive with 3 partitions (#1 Windows 7, #2 Debian Squeeze, #some data). Grub 2 is installed in MBR and lets me choose which system to boot. I would encrypt the 1st system partition containing Win 7. I tried to do this using TrueCrypt under Windows, but it says that encrypting Windows system with other loader (not windows loader, Grub in my case) is not supported. How can I do that?

  • Changing home directory in cPanel

    Is it possible (and how?) to change what the home directory is in a hosting environment? For instance, my current home directory is /home/accountname/, but I would like to develop a second version of the site in /home/accountname/cms/ (to avoid filename conflict, etc.), and then make the domain point there. Do I have to do that through the domain registrar, or can I do that in cPanel?

    If I get the fully qualified computer name on a Windows server (2K3 or 2K8) using the GetComputerNameEx() API call, can I rely on that name to be unique on that particular domain? That is, can I assume that only a single active physical or virtual machine will have that fully qualified name at a given time? As a second question: is it guaranteed that all Windows machines will have such a fully-qualified name? Thanks for any help.

In Outlook, one can make calendar item out of email by draging it to calendar - this saves time on the name of the calendar time and having all the details, but the user still has to manually pick time and date. Is there a smart solution so that a plug-in or add-on could do that?

  • Is it possible to combine a list of torrents into one torrent with many files, keeping the seeds?

    Let's say you have all the episodes of FOO series that you downloaded as they were out, so you have like 20 torrents. Now let's say you want to make a bundle torrent with all the files, call it "FOO Season 1", and then send it to someone. One way would be to create a new torrent with all the episodes, but you would lose all the seeds from the current torrents, and you also couldn't seed people that want to download single episodes. Is this possible with the BitTorrent protocol?

    So, let's say I run sudo apt-get upgrade on my Lucid Lynx and it upgrades a couple of packages I'm interested in. Is there a command to run that will open some kind of info or manual that tells me what changes were made in this new version of the package? For instance, if run the apt-get upgrade and it installs a new version of empathy. Do I have to go over to their site to review the changes made in this version, or is there a quicker command line way?

    As per questions like this, cloning a VM in VirtualBox is possible, if not all that streightforward. However, everything I've seen indicates that before a VM is cloned, all the snapshots need to be folded back into a single disk image. But, what if I don't want to? Suppose I want to keep my stack of snapshots on the original, and then clone that VM such that the clone also had the same stack of snapshots available? Is that possible?

Is there a way I can mark a single program so that won't ask me that again? Like, I think it is good that it asks me the first time, but some programs I do launch more often, and I am ok with them making changes and don't want to be asked all the time.

  • VMware guest eats 100% cpu

    I have a Windows 7 x64 guest that acts very strange - the VM is very slow and taskmgr will consume 50% (with 2 cores) or up to 99% (single) of the CPU when everything else is idle. Host is Windows 7 x64 with VMware Workstation 7.0.1 VMware tools are installed the same VM, when running on another PC with VMware Server 2.0 will work OK (CPU at ~0% when idle) I've tried (with no effects) enabled/disabled 3d selected 1 or 2 cores adjusted memory (1gb/500mb) adjusted the bios mem.hotadd = "FALSE" disabled page trimming Windows 7 x86 guests on the same machine do not have this problem.

    Hi, In large server environments, how do you handle the issue of backing up SQL Server dbs which may not be in sync with other dbs they rely on? So if I back up DB1 from a server, and it uses another db which is not backed up, doing a restore when the dbs are in differing state could cause problems? It seems like all dependent DBs should be backed up, regardless of size etc, but in my current job (where we're a datacentre company and I'm a .NET Developer), I only backup some of several dependent DBs on a SQL Server instance. I want to permit a single user (to start with) to use a SSL client certificate, with all remaining users still able to use the ldap credentials authentication method.   • EntityManager injection works in JBoss 7.1.1 but not WebSphere 7

    I've built an EJB that will manage my database access. I'm building a web app around it that uses Struts 2. The problem I'm having is when I deploy the ear, the EntityManager doesn't get injected into my service class (and winds up null and results in NullPointerExceptions). The weird thing is, it works on JBoss 7.1.1 but not on WebSphere 7. You'll notice that Struts doesn't inject the EJB, so I've got some intercepter code that does that. My current working theory right now is that the WS7 container can't inject the EntityManager because of Struts for some unknown reason. My next step is to try Spring next, but I'd really like to get this to work if possible. I've spent a few days searching and trying various things and haven't had any luck. I figured I'd give this a shot.   • How to create sprites, programatically without using prefabs?

    I have different types of images for different sprites. and i am not certain that how much different sprites(images) i will have to show. So, i gotta create the sprites and apply textures programatically at runtime. Now, I defiantly can't use prefabs because it will restrict me with the number of different sprites i can use. and also, changing texture on one sprite prefab instance in game, will change all the sprites prefab, that's not acceptable in my case. Is there a way i can create sprites without having to create static prefab ? where ever i looked for the solution every time i got the same answer "create a prefab", which is what can not be done in my case.

    I am trying to type documents in Hindi language. My OS: Ubuntu 11.10 Gnome environment (http://packages.ubuntu.com/search?keywords=gnome-session-fallback) I do not use unity interface.The method is shown here http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LL7icGNhIfI I am able to type in Hindi in Libreoffice and gedit as well with method shown above.But this is a very difficult way of typing because I have to remember all the English Keys corresponding to the Hindi words as mapped here http://docs.redhat.com/docs/en-US/Red_Hat_Enterprise_Linux/5/html-single/International_Language_Support_Guide/images/hindi.png What I want to be able to do is type phonetically and not use above kind of keyboard. I have US English keyboard in my laptop.
